The Care for Kids Barnstaple 10k will take place on Sunday 7 July 2024, starting and finishing at Barnstaple Rugby Club. There will be a medal and t-shirt for all finishers and prizes for the fastest runners in each age category. Early bird entry is available until the end of February, at a discounted rate of £22 for affiliated runners and £24 for unaffiliated runners.

It’s a largely flat route, which makes it the ideal race for beginners and experienced runners hoping to achieve a personal best. The Barnstaple 10k is supported by headline sponsors Brewer, Harding & Rowe Solicitors and there is the opportunity for other local businesses to sponsor the event. Get in touch with Care for Kids North Devon if your business can help.
Care for Kids Charity Manager, Jacky Massos, says: “In 2023 our 10K raised over £7,200 for our charity - it was fantastic. We want this year to be even bigger, so we’re encouraging people to enter early. Get in quick if you want to take advantage of our early bird offer. We also need volunteers and more sponsors, so if you’d like to do something amazing for our small charity, please get in touch.”

All proceeds from the run will go towards local charity Care for Kids North Devon, which provides financial support to North Devon families who have a child diagnosed with a life threatening illness or condition. Care for Kids also carries out enhancements at the children’s ward at North Devon District Hospital.

A new book out in April 2024 is highlighting some of the best walks with swims in North Devon. Wild Swimming Walks North Devon and Exmoor, by Sophie Pierce and Matt Newbury, contains 28 walks, all with swimming spots en route, along with maps anddirections.
For Sophie and Matt, it is all about empowering people to explore the wonderful countryside on their own doorstep. Says Sophie : “We are fortunate to live in such a stunning part of the world, it’s something we perhaps take for granted. The coast of North Devon is unparallelled in its beauty, as is the countryside inland. We want people to discover the joy of going on adventures close tohome.Andbyswimmingaswellaswalking, thewholeexperienceofbeingoutdoorsinnatureisenriched.”

This is something that many people in North Devon are already realising, with active swimming groups in Westward Ho!, Appledore, Saunton and Ilfracombe, to name just a few. Sophie and Matt say the local community has been incredibly welcoming, helping with research and sharing ideas and top tips, and many have contributed photos to the book.
The guide contains detailed descriptions as well as maps and directions, of numerous outings in and around North Devon, in many locations including Clovelly, Appledore, WestwardHo!,Torrington,Umberleigh,Croyde,IlfracombeandWatermouthBay.

Romance scams involve people being duped into sending money to criminals who go to great lengths to gain their trust and convince them that they are in a genuine relationship. They use language to manipulate, persuade and exploit so that requests for money do not raise alarm bells. These requests might be highly emotive, such as criminals claiming they need money for emergency medical care, or to pay for transport costs to visit the victim if they are overseas. Scammers will often build a relationship with their victims over time.
Signs your friend or family member may be involved in a romance scam:
• They may be very secretive about their relationship or provide excuses for why their online partner has not video called or met them in person. They might become hostile or angry and withdraw from conversation when you ask any questions about their partner.
• They may express very strong emotions and commitment to someone they have only just met. They have sent, or are planning to send, money to someone they have not met face-to-face. They may take out loans or withdraw from their pension to send money.
How users can stay safe from romance scams:
• Be suspicious of any requests for money from someone you have never met in person, particularly if you have only recently met online.
• Speak to your family or friends to get advice.
Profile photos may not be genuine, do your research first. Performing a reverse image search on a search engine can find photos that have been taken from somewhere, or someone else. It is important that no matter how long you’ve been speaking to someone online and how much you think you trust them, if you have not met them in person, it’s important that you do not:
• Send them any money.
• Allow them access to your bank account.
• Transfer money on their behalf.
• Take a loan out for them.
• Provide copies of your personal documents such as passports or driving licenses.
• Invest your own money on their behalf or on their advice.
• Purchase and send the codes on gift cards from Amazon or iTunes.
• Agree to receive and/or send parcels on their behalf (laptops, mobile phones etc.)
How to report it
If you think you have been a victim of a romance scam, do not feel ashamed or embarrassed - you are not alone. Contact your bank immediately and report it to Action Fraud on 0300 123 2040 or via actionfraud.police.uk.

Elise Watson, Centre Manager at Dogs Trust Ilfracombe, said:
“We want all our dogs to find a forever home, but recently we’ve noticed bigger dogs, such as Greyhounds and Lurchers, are remaining at the centre for a long time, or being passed over.
“We understand that people might be short on space, and that the cost-of-living is taking its toll, however these big dogs deserve a chance. If you have a dog shaped hole in your life, please consider one of our bigger dogs - they are large but full of love!”
One dog, who is looking for his forever home, is Bean Bean is an excitable eight-year-old Rhodesian Ridgeback who is looking for an adult only home. A puppy in an adult dogs body, Bean is always happy to meet his human pals, and will ‘mouth’ them with friendly intentions. When on walks, he loves having a sniff and paddling in water. Bean is looking to be the only pet in the home, but would benefit from having a few quiet, calm, dogs to socialise with when out and about.

Unit 20 Farm Road, Caddesdown

Bean will sometimes play with toys, and he prefers soft squeaky ones. His absolutely loves his food and treats. For more information, or if you think you could give Bean a forever home, please visithttps://www.dogstrust.org.uk/rehoming/dogs/rhodesianridgeback/1156478

The start of the year has been very, very busy and there seems to be several projects that are fingers crossed falling into place. Great to see Braunton’s Men’s Shed train and people taking photos and discussing the carriage. The Men’s Shed are hoping to be functional in the spring, as they continue to work on accessibility and the interior, so they are ready for people to climb on board. Anyone interested contact: brauntonmensshed@gmail.com
YOUTH WORK
Work has continued within the Youth element of Live Well in Braunton (LWIB) and we will be offering two Lifeskills courses in the next couple of months. This will be Youth First Aid on Saturday 23rd March 12-3PM at The Ask for Jake Hub and Budgeting Skills delivered by Navigate-details TBC. If these are successful we will look at rolling out a programme of young peoples life skills in Braunton and the surrounding areas.
A 2nd crochet course, Creating Crochet Squares took place on Saturday 24th February-details to follow in next month edition. As there is interest in crotchet by young people we are hoping to partner with Braunton Library and offer free monthly crotchet drop ins, so watch this space.
2nd Community Soup
Friday 15th March 7-9pm at Braunton Parish Hall
Last October, we hosted our first ever soup event. Guests paid £5 for a bowl of delicious home-made soup and three local organisations (Braunton Heritage Trail, Braunton Women’s Walking Football and Zest lab) pitched for the proceeds of the soup and raffle. We raised £400 hearing all about the great things going on in our village. The vote went to Braunton Women’s Walking Football, but they were all great causes. Each organisation benefitted not only from much needed funds from the evening, but they also received external support and funds, including Braunton Rotary Club’s generous sponsorship of new kit for the ladies. Join us again in March where we will hear from 4 more worthy causes.
AGEING WELL EVENT
Tuesday 20th February 10-12.30pm @ Braunton Parish Hall.
Live Well in Braunton in partnership with Age Concern held a joint event to support residents. The event was informal and highlighted local services, groups and activities and made people aware of what is happening locally.
BRAUNTON COMMUNITY GARDEN
An open meeting on Saturday 27th January at Braunton Parish Hall with 30 people in attendance. Subsequent meetings have taken place, and the project will hopefully continue to move forward. A big thank you to all those involved and hopefully we will be able to unveil a location soon. At the time of going to press we were hoping to finalise a Community Agreement with a third party. If you are interested in being part of this project, please contact: connect@livewellinbraunton.co.uk
It can either be in an advisory role, hands-on support or as part of a committee. Help always required whether as a one-off offer, or support at hoc to help sustain the project. Many hands can make this light work.
