March 2023

Hello and welcome to the March edition.
We hope you had a lovely time celebrating Valentine’s Day and enjoyed all those yummy pancakes?
I’m very excited for March as on 20th March it is the first day of Spring and then on Sunday 26th March the clocks go forward giving us lighter evenings and warmer weather hopefully. I know we lose an hour in bed but I think it’s worth it, just remember to turn the clocks on an hour before you go to bed on the Saturday night.
Mother’s Day is also in March on the 19th, time to thank all those lovely mums out there.
This month we have a competition for all you Tina Turner fans, have a look on pages 16 and 17.
Also our feature on Guide dog puppy raising is so worth a read, it really pulled my heart strings so it would be great if anyone can help with this. If you do proceed with it, let me know and we can follow your journey.
There’s also informational features from North Devon Council and Landkey Hedgehog group and a fab North Devon Hospice event to get involved in.
Have a fabulous March and look out for all the flowers popping up!
Finally, if you would like to advertise your business to homes across Barnstaple and the surrounding areas each month, please get in touch.

With the start of the New Year comes the first days of new beginnings, new adventures and new experiences. This year, why not do something really special? When we say volunteering for Guide Dogs is life changing, we’re not just talking about the people we’ll support. You’ll gain new skills; build confidence you never knew you had and have amazing experiences that you genuinely couldn’t find anywhere else.
There are around 2 million people living with sight loss in the UK. Guide Dogs, a UK-wide charity with a community team based in Exeter, supports people with a visual impairment to maintain their independence and live the life they choose. There are lots of different services on offer, ranging from volunteer-led services such as My Sighted Guide through to the support for children and young people, access to technology, and the iconic guide dog service.
This year, we are urgently appealing for new volunteers to sign up as Puppy Raisers. This means looking after future guide dogs for the first year of their lives, socialising them and giving them a loving home. It’s a hugely rewarding role with lots of support and training on offer, plus you will meet lots of new people in your area who are also raising pups.
Many of you may think saying goodbye to your pup would be too difficult, but our volunteers say nothing beats the rewarding feeling of knowing you have played a huge part in changing someone’s life. Terry describes the moment he first said goodbye to the first dog he fostered:
“We were really attached to the first dog we fostered, Carli. However, we get to see her with her owner and that makes it all worthwhile. We went to our local centre and Carli came to greet us but immediately returned to her owner’s side as if to say ‘I’ve got a job to do’. Carli has given her owner the opportunity to go to university and live a full life.”
Sometimes, the first step can feel daunting, but if you’re volunteering with Guide Dogs, our welcoming and supportive family of both staff and volunteers are walking alongside you throughout.

Come shake a tail feather with the UK’s original, award-winning Tina Turner tribute aka Justine Riddoch and her talented cast.
When Tina burst onto the scene, she won the hearts of music fans from the outset, creating a fearsome reputation for her live performances – and those never-ending legs!
Early hits River Deep – Mountain High, Proud Mary and Nutbush City Limits were just a taste of what was to come. We Don’t Need Another Hero, Simply the Best, What’s Love Got to Do With It, I Don’t Wanna Lose You and When the Heartache is Over propelled her to stadium concert stardom.
Supported by her super-talented band and dazzling dancing girls in sequins, feathers and diamonds, Justine is the ULTIMATE Tina (a National Tribute Awards winner since 2013). She’s got the looks, she’s got the moves, she's got the legs, but most of all, she’s got THE voice. Join an army of loyal fans for a truly authentic, fun-packed musical spectacular!
Twelve years have passed since Totally TINA first sprang to life in the vibrant city of Liverpool, but a Lifetime Achievement Award and many other prestigious accolades along the way have earned Justine’s ‘Totally Tina’ a deserved top spot in the musical tribute world.
Justine admits she has been observing her beloved muse from the start; constantly honing her homage to the legend herself with passion and an unrivalled attention to detail, to deliver the most authentic recreation of the rock and roll Queen’s live performances.
The cast and crew of Totally Tina are pulling out all the stops this year with the promise of a brand new, custom-made performances featuring a whole host of fresh ideas, coupled with the band’s now famous humour.
The Show is designed to make the audience feel that the legendary performer is right back in front of them, strutting her stuff on the most famous legs in show business!
This year’s production is a heady mix of nostalgia and surprise with all the favourite Tina Turner hits, her best duets, much-loved covers and the odd twist in the tale.
Jumping Jack Flash, Honky Tonky Woman, Get Back, It’s Only Rock and Roll and The Bitch is Back have been added to a set which includes Simply The Best, Proud Mary, Nutbush City Limits and Private Dancer to name a few.

‘TOTALLY TINA’ rocks into its 14th year coming to ILFRACOMBE – The Landmark on Thursday 23rd March 2023!
All the songs are enhanced by the customary flourish of sparkling stiletto heels, flamboyant tail feathers, high energy dance routines and musical genius. There’s plenty of audience engagement and post-show ‘meet and greets’ too, making the Show more personal.
In fact, it’s probably the closest thing to a live Tina Turner concert!
Justine, a past winner of cult talent show, Stars In Their Eyes performing as Anastacia, is known in the business for her enthusiasm and drive, and has been singing professionally for 30 years. She is justifiably proud of her cast and crew who’ve played a huge part in helping her to create the longest running Tina Turner tribute.
She said: “I am thrilled by the success of this production – we have come so far! Having been told on many occasions that I sounded like Tina, I decided to take the plunge and then spent hours familiarising myself with her life story and scrutinising video footage to watch mannerisms and body movements.
We always add our own personality to the Show each year; the element of surprise keeps things fresh, but my ultimate aim is to remain faithful to a Tina Turner live concert paying tribute to her career, and bring the best version of this amazing woman; her voice, her passion and even her legs, to her many fans.
That’s why we love it when people tell us that they go away feeling as though they have seen the real thing.”
Totally Tina has been the ultimate Tina Turner tribute for the past nine years, from 2013 to 2019 winning Best Female Artist, Best Choreography, Best Sound & Lighting and the prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award at the NTMA, and in 2020 and 2021 winning Best Tribute at the NREA and NEA respectively.
The band have played to audiences all over the country and in Europe, and have performed at the Cover Festival in Davos, Switzerland (Tina Turner’s new home country) the last few years.
Justine added: “We love what we do, and we’re lucky enough to have an incredibly loyal army of fans here and overseas. We look forward to meeting many more new fans this year.”
If you fancy winning a pair of tickets to see this fantastic show just email me the answer to: What year was Tina Turner born in?
Email your answers to lisa@insightmags.co.uk and one lucky winner will be picked from random.
Competition deadline is Wednesday 15th March at 12.00 noon.

For the first time, residents in Torridge and North Devon districts, and across the UK, will need to show photographic ID to vote at this year’s local elections, which take place on 4th May in northern Devon. Residents are being urged to plan ahead and make sure they are ready to vote by checking they have access to one of the accepted forms of ID.
The forms of ID include a UK, European Economic Area (EEA) or Commonwealth passport; a UK, EEA or Commonwealth drivers’ licence; and some concessionary travel passes, such as an older person’s bus pass. Voters will be able to use expired ID if they are still recognisable from the photo.
Anyone who does not have one of the accepted forms of ID will be able to apply for a free ID online or by completing a paper form when the application process opens in a few weeks’ time.
The changes have been decided by the Government and the full list of accepted ID is available on the Electoral Commission’s website, along with more information about the new requirement and details of how to apply for the free ID, at electoralcommission.org.uk/voterID.
Anyone requiring further advice should check online in the first instance or call their respective electoral services team –www.torridge.gov.uk/ elections 01237 428739 or https://www.northdevon.gov.uk/ elections/ 01271 388277

Located in the centre of Barnstaple at 39-40 Boutport Street breathing a new lease of life into the previously unoccupied Post Office building.
Anticipate an eclectic program spanning a wealth of genres from rock and indie, to rap, reggae, hip-hop, grime, crossing over to house, dance, d&b as well as folk, jazz, spoken word, comedy and poetry. Expect not only a dedicated music venue, but one that prioritises sound, looks awesome, feels welcoming and inclusive serving a great selection quality drinks.
JCT27 is the latest project from Liam Farlie, local businessman and director of Alehouse and eatery Latitude 48, located on Barnstaple High Street. Liam explains the concept behind naming the venue JCT27
‘Our journey towards creating this venue has been very much like a long journey back to Barnstaple from afar. Pulling off at Junction 27 represents the near completion of a long drive, not only towards Barnstaple, but also towards our goal of Barnstaple's only live music venue.
North Devonian's may not be aware or would probably care to admit, but if they have driven outside the immediate sphere, they will have a special place in their heart for Junction 27 – they may not even know that special place is there. ‘But when we twin that familiar Junction with the newest and most exiting venue in North Devon, they will come to realise the satisfaction from a long journey to an amazing destination.’

Working with Liam is freelancer Clare Chapple, local senior events manager and programmer, Clare has worked for well over a decade in creative live music events, festivals and booking artists and has tons of experience from founding the now closed venue The Factory.
‘Dedicated grass roots music venues are real cultural assets, a venue such as JCT27 will not only support the local economy, but support musicians and artists from the ground up, these venues are where tomorrows stars cut their teeth. I’m really excited to be working with Liam to build a venue that I hope we will all come to love and be a cultural landmark in North Devon in years to come.’ says Clare
After an extensive refit the 235 capacity venue will have a dedicated raised stage area, complete with professional quality in house sound and lighting, artist green room area and accessible toilets and bar. Without giving too much away, the interior design features heavily on bringing the backstage feel into the venue to truly enhance the immersive gig experience for the audience. Using cheque plate aluminium, steel, flight-cases and raw unfinished surfaces to create a unique design.
‘Having worked in events for many years we have a special connection and respect for "backstage" including the artists, but also the crew and equipment it takes to entertain a crowd. We wanted to pay homage to these, often, unsung heroes and try to raise a little awareness of what goes into a show.’ says Liam.
Environmental factors have been consider with the build and infrastructure on this project. Reclaimed bricks have been utilised for the stage area. All of the wood, doors and other materials extracted during the tear down has been reused in other areas. Existing professional sound and light equipment owned has been serviced and re-purposed. A great deal of our high end equipment has been purchased from local sources or other venues that are closing down.
With a whole host of events in the pipeline featuring touring national and international artists along with plenty of opportunity for up and coming artists and producers to showcase their work. With community and culture at its heart the team would love to hear who you would like to see step on stage at JCT27.

A new 30-minute option for parking in some town centre car parks is among a raft of changes to North Devon Council's parking charges.
Changes to North Devon Council's Off Street Parking Places Order are set to come into effect in the spring.
Visitors to Barnstaple's Cattle Market, Bear Street and Queen Street car parks and Ilfracombe's Wilder Road car park will be able to opt for a 30-minute stay for just 50p, offering a new option for those making brief stops in the town centre. Elsewhere, charges across council car parks will be increasing for the first time since 2016 to reflect an increase in running costs.
There will be an increase of 20p per hour in short-stay and medium-stay car parks in Barnstaple, as well as Brookdale, Larkstone Lane, Oxford Grove and Wilder Road in Ilfracombe, with an hour-long stay now costing £1.30. Seasonal parking charges are being introduced across the district's coastal short stay car parks. An hour-long stay will be £1.50 in high season, reducing to 80p in the winter.
The all-day charge for long stay car parks across the district will rise to £2.50. There are also modest increases to permits, which offer a cost effective alternative for those using long stay car parks on a regular basis.

The cost of subscribing to have your garden waste collected in the North Devon district will rise in April 2023, councillors have agreed.
North Devon Council has approved an increase in the charge for collecting garden waste to ensure the full costs are met by those receiving the service and that residents that do not have a garden waste collection are not contributing to the service through their council tax.
The new subscription charge will be £55 per year per bin, which equates to an increase of just 40 pence per collection.
Lead Member for Environment at North Devon Council, Councillor Netti Pearson, says: "We have had to increase the price of the optional garden collection service due to inflation and other associated service cost rises. The new charge is now in line with many other authorities.
"The increase will take the cost of having the garden bin emptied every two weeks from the beginning of February until the end of November and every four weeks during December and January, to £2.20 per collection. I still believe for this to be great value for a convenient, eco-friendly service."
The garden wheelie bin can be used to dispose of:
• Real Christmas trees - chopped up
• Bark
• Hedge clippings
• Grass cuttings
• Weeds
• Cut flowers
• Plants (no soil)
• Windfalls
• Untreated sawdust
• Wood shavings
• Clean straw
To sign up for the council's garden waste service, please visit their website. For more information on the garden waste collection service, residents can visit the council's website.
To stay up-to-date with council news, residents are encouraged to follow their social channels.

As we come into Spring, with lighter evenings and hopefully warmer days, you may see signs of a hedgehog visiting your garden. Even though they will be out roaming at night you may see the tell tale signs of their droppings. Sometimes mistaken for a slug on your lawn the droppings are between 15-50mm often with the shiny outer casing of insects.
Hedgehogs can roam up to a mile a night searching for food but over the decades their ability to do so has been restricted by garden fences and lawns being converted into paved areas. Recent research suggests that up to a 1/3 of the population has been lost in urban areas but with a 50% decline in rural areas.
Hedgehogs evolved 15 million years ago and were a common sight where hedges were left to flourish and insects were abundant. Unfortunately with less land as suitable habitat hedgehogs have had to adapt to a more urban environment often crossing busy roads to get to a food source.
Like many of our other British wildlife they need a helping hand from us. Here is how you can help to support your local population of hedgehogs.
• Create a hedgehog highway which is basically a hole in your fence, gate or wall that links your garden to your neighbours. The opening needs to be 13cm x 13 cm and the more you link your garden to your neighbours, street, village the more access hedgehogs will have to search for food.
• Put out food and water. This is not to replace hedgehog’s natural food source but to supplement their diet. Wet and/or dry cat or dog food is suitable but not fish based. Also no mealworms, it is now found that the phosphorous in mealworms is affecting the bones of the hedgehog. Bread and milk should also not be put out. Water is especially welcome in the summer months.
• If you are concerned about other animals eating the food a feeding station can be made from a plastic storage box with a 13cm opening and ideally part of a drain pipe as an entrance should certainly deter cats going inside to eat.
• If possible stop using chemicals in the garden. Hedgehogs eat a variety of insects and invertebrates from caterpillars, beetles, worms, millipedes to slugs. Encourage hedgehogs into your garden to act as pest controllers.
• Obviously before using the strimmer check that no hedgehogs have made their home in the overgrown areas. It can cause horrific injuries.
• To give a hedgehog somewhere to hibernate over winter you might like to make a hedgehog home. A great website for how to make a home and all things hedgehog is www.hedgehogstreet.org
• Finally get together with other like minded people to educate, share and support others in your area to support this beautiful but at risk British mammal.
