NEW MUSIC VENUE

OPENING IN BARNSTAPLE SPRING 2023 TO BE NAMED JCT27

JCT27 - Barnstaple's new live music venue will be opening its doors in Barnstaple town centre this coming spring.

The rumours are true, it’s finally happening, a dedicated grassroots music venue will soon be throwing its doors open in the centre of Barnstaple. JCT27 (Junction 27), a 235 capacity standing venue that will host a diverse program of live music enriching music, arts and culture in Barnstaple and further afield. Located in the centre of Barnstaple at 39-40 Boutport Street breathing a new lease of life into the previously unoccupied Post Office building.

Anticipate an eclectic program spanning a wealth of genres from rock and indie, to rap, reggae, hip-hop, grime, crossing over to house, dance, d&b as well as folk, jazz, spoken word, comedy and poetry. Expect not only a dedicated music venue, but one that prioritises sound, looks awesome, feels welcoming and inclusive serving a great selection quality drinks.

JCT27 is the latest project from Liam Farlie, local businessman and director of Alehouse and eatery Latitude 48, located on Barnstaple High Street. Liam explains the concept behind naming the venue JCT27

‘Our journey towards creating this venue has been very much like a long journey back to Barnstaple from afar. Pulling off at Junction 27 represents the near completion of a long drive, not only towards Barnstaple, but also towards our goal of Barnstaple's only live music venue.

North Devonian's may not be aware or would probably care to admit, but if they have driven outside the immediate sphere, they will have a special place in their heart for Junction 27 – they may not even know that special place is there. ‘But when we twin that familiar Junction with the newest and most exiting venue in North Devon, they will come to realise the satisfaction from a long journey to an amazing destination.’

To advertise call 01237 422074 or email mag@ex33.co.uk 18

Working with Liam is freelancer Clare Chapple, local senior events manager and programmer, Clare has worked for well over a decade in creative live music events, festivals and booking artists and has tons of experience from founding the now closed venue The Factory.

Dedicated grass roots music venues are real cultural assets, a venue such as JCT27 will not only support the local economy, but support musicians and artists from the ground up, these venues are where tomorrows stars cut their teeth. I’m really excited to be working with Liam to build a venue that I hope we will all come to love and be a cultural landmark in North Devon in years to come.’ says Clare

After an extensive refit the 235 capacity venue will have a dedicated raised stage area, complete with professional quality in house sound and lighting, artist green room area and accessible toilets and bar. Without giving too much away, the interior design features heavily on bringing the backstage feel into the venue to truly enhance the immersive gig experience for the audience. Using cheque plate aluminium, steel, flight-cases and raw unfinished surfaces to create a unique design.

‘Having worked in events for many years we have a special connection and respect for "backstage" including the artists, but also the crew and equipment it takes to entertain a crowd. We wanted to pay homage to these, often, unsung heroes and try to raise a little awareness of what goes into a show.’ says Liam.

Environmental factors have been consider with the build and infrastructure on this project. Reclaimed bricks have been utilised for the stage area. All of the wood, doors and other materials extracted during the tear down has been reused in other areas. Existing professional sound and light equipment owned has been serviced and re-purposed. A great deal of our high end equipment has been purchased from local sources or other venues that are closing down.

With a whole host of events in the pipeline featuring touring national and international artists along with plenty of opportunity for up and coming artists and producers to showcase their work. With community and culture at its heart the team would love to hear who you would like to see step on stage at JCT27.

The Supreme Recreation of a Tina concert

‘TOTALLY TINA’ rocks into its 14th year coming to ILFRACOMBE – The Landmark on Thursday 23rd March 2023!

Come shake a tail feather with the UK’s original, award-winning Tina Turner tribute …. aka Justine Riddoch and her talented cast.

When Tina burst onto the scene, she won the hearts of music fans from the outset, creating a fearsome reputation for her live performances – and those never-ending legs!

Early hits River Deep – Mountain High, Proud Mary and Nutbush City Limits were just a taste of what was to come. We Don’t Need Another Hero, Simply the Best, What’s Love Got to Do With It, I Don’t Wanna Lose You and When the Heartache is Over propelled her to stadium concert stardom.

Supported by her super-talented band and dazzling dancing girls in sequins, feathers and diamonds, Justine is the ULTIMATE Tina (a National Tribute Awards winner since 2013). She’s got the looks, she’s got the moves, she's got the legs, but most of all, she’s got THE voice. Join an army of loyal fans for a truly authentic, fun-packed musical spectacular!

Twelve years have passed since TotallyTINA first sprang to life in the vibrant city of Liverpool, but a Lifetime Achievement Award and many other prestigious accolades along the way have earned Justine’s ‘Totally Tina’ a deserved top spot in the musical tribute world.

Justine admits she has been observing her beloved muse from the start; constantly honing her homage to the legend herself with passion and an unrivalled attention to detail, to deliver the most authentic recreation of the rock and roll Queen’s live performances.

The cast and crew of Totally Tina are pulling out all the stops this year with the promise of a brand new, custom-made performances featuring a whole host of fresh ideas, coupled with the band’s now famous humour.

The Show is designed to make the audience feel that the legendary performer is right back in front of them, strutting her stuff on the most famous legs in show business!

This year’s production is a heady mix of nostalgia and surprise with all the favourite Tina Turner hits, her best duets, much-loved covers and the odd twist in the tale.

Jumping Jack Flash, Honky Tonky Woman, Get Back, It’s Only Rock and Roll and The Bitch is Back have been added to a set which includes Simply The Best, Proud Mary, Nutbush City Limits and Private Dancer to name a few.

To advertise call 01237 422074 or email mag@ex33.co.uk 28

All the songs are enhanced by the customary flourish of sparkling stiletto heels, flamboyant tail feathers, high energy dance routines and musical genius. There’s plenty of audience engagement and post-show ‘meet and greets’ too, making the Show more personal.

In fact, it’s probably the closest thing to a live Tina Turner concert!

Justine, a past winner of cult talent show, Stars In Their Eyes performing as Anastacia, is known in the business for her enthusiasm and drive, and has been singing professionally for 30 years. She is justifiably proud of her cast and crew who’ve played a huge part in helping her to create the longest running Tina Turner tribute.

She said: “I am thrilled by the success of this production – we have come so far! Having been told on many occasions that I sounded like Tina, I decided to take the plunge and then spent hours familiarising myself with her life story and scrutinising video footage to watch mannerisms and body movements.

We always add our own personality to the Show each year; the element of surprise keeps things fresh, but my ultimate aim is to remain faithful to a Tina Turner live concert paying tribute to her career, and bring the best version of this amazing woman; her voice, her passion and even her legs, to her many fans.

That’s why we love it when people tell us that they go away feeling as though they have seen the real thing.”

Totally Tina has been the ultimate Tina Turner tribute for the past nine years, from 2013 to 2019 winning Best Female Artist, Best Choreography, Best Sound & Lighting and the prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award at the NTMA, and in 2020 and 2021 winning Best Tribute at the NREA and NEA respectively.

The band have played to audiences all over the country and in Europe, and have performed at the Cover Festival in Davos, Switzerland (Tina Turner’s new home country) the last few years.

Justine added: “We love what we do, and we’re lucky enough to have an incredibly loyal army of fans here and overseas. We look forward to meeting many more new fans this year.”

If you fancy winning a pair of tickets to see this fantastic show just email me the answer to: What year was Tina Turner born in?

Email your answers to lisa@insightmags.co.uk and one lucky winner will be picked from random.

Patch is an adorable four-year-old Staffordshire Bull – full of fun and affection.

He adores a fuss and snuggles with the people he knows, and he likes to chill on the sofa with you. He is initially shy around new people so enjoys quieter walks where there isn’t too much hustle and bustle.

Patch likes fun and adventure and is happy to travel in the car to get to new destinations. He can be worried by other dogs, however with careful introductions he can walk alongside them and has made a few walking buddies here at the rehoming centre. He is housetrained, and he knows his basic training.

Patch is looking for a loving home with adults and no other pets. He has good history of settling well in a home environment and has been known to like to sleep in his owner’s bed!

If you think you could give Patch the loving home that he deserves please take a look at his profile on Dogs Trust’s website www.dogstrust.org.uk/rehoming

Cat of the Month - Nana

Our longest residentPoor Nana is wondering why no-one wants him! He has been in our care much longer than any other cat and he has witnessed other cats coming in and finding new homes whilst he sits all alone in his pen. He did once have someone come specifically to see him, but they fell in love with another pair of cats before they even got to Nana, and left with them instead!

Nana is in the prime of his life at 6 years of age and has been given a clean bill of health by our vet. He can be a little shy at first but soon starts head butting and tapping for attention, although he will let you know when he has had enough!

Nana needs to be the only cat as he really doesn’t like other felines and would probably best suit an adult only family, or a home with older children.

We know Nana was once a much loved pet but despite extensive efforts, we have been unable to find his original owners and can only surmise that he either jumped in a delivery vehicle from who knows where, or he simply was abandoned as no longer wanted! Either way, he now desperately needs to find a new, permanent and loving home to call his own.

We have six Ukrainian refugees living in or near Braunton. Some of them have been here for over six months now and are looking for their next accommodation. Do you have a place to rent, or a spare room you would be willing to offer for at least six months to aid a refugee?

We can help you become a sponsor for someonewho has already been in England for six months or longer. Most already have jobs and know some English. As a sponsor you would be paidby thegovernment (currently £500 a month) tax free and without affecting your council taxor benefits. You could meet thembeforemaking a decision and you would all be supported 24/7 byThePickwell Foundation.

Also,if you can offer a job (eg cleaning) to a Ukrainian lady in the early stages of learningEnglish please getin touch.

Please message me if you would like to know more on judiwalker1@outlook.com or check out https://www.northdevonwithukraine.co.uk

Garden waste collection update from North Devon Council

The cost of subscribing to have your garden waste collected in the North Devon district will rise in April 2023, councillors have agreed.

North Devon Council has approved an increase in the charge for collecting garden waste to ensure the full costs are met by those receiving the service and that residents that do not have a garden waste collection are not contributing to the service through their council tax.

The new subscription charge will be £55 per year per bin, which equates to an increase of just 40 pence per collection.

"The increase will take the cost of having the garden bin emptied every two weeks from the beginning of February until the end of November and every four weeks during December and January, to £2.20 per collection.

The garden wheelie bin can be used to dispose of: Real Christmas trees - chopped up, Bark, Hedge clippings, Grass cuttings, Weeds, Cut flowers, Plants (no soil), Windfalls, Untreated sawdust, Wood shavings and Clean straw

To sign up for the council's garden waste service, please visit their website. For more information on the garden waste collection service, visit the council's website.
