Copy Catz has been serving the residents of Braunton for the last sixteen years by owner Julian Poulter, his mum Delphine and his fiancé. The shop really is a treasure trove of goodies catering for all, young and old with an array of arts and craft products, gifts, stationery, model cars and airfix models, dream catchers, jigsaws, metal signs and ‘OO’ scale vehicles to name a few! Julian prides himself on running an ‘old fashioned’ shop from the bell on entering the shop to the till on the counter.
Julian can also preserve your treasured memories by s and he can assist you in printing,
Julian has been particularly busy recently by self publishing his own This he describes as a cross between ‘Oliver Based between 1880 - 1888, the book is a tale of love, lust, survival, honour and courage and unfolds as s twists of fate forces him to abscond to Victorian London. Making allies and enemies, one of which may well answer to the name of Jack the Ripper, and the other would show him the meaning of hope.
Julian has won multiple awards for film scripts in International Film Festivals all over the world including Milan and LA with his film script ‘A Call to Arms’ where he won Best Feature Screenplay. He has now taken his latest film script into production with his book where he says his fiancé Lizzie Sumner loved the script so much that she persuaded him to publish it. Julian hopes that someday in the future, the book may also make it into film format.
His next award ceremony will be in Nice in a few weeks time and Julian hopes to rack up some more awards this time around with ‘Best unproduced script’.
‘The Locksmith’ gives a nod to Charles Dickens as one of the characters in the book is named John Huffam which is actually Charles Dickens middle names.
Julian explained to me that he recently had a customer in the shop from London who bought several copies of the book as he explained to Julian that his late relative was in fact ‘Montague John Druitt’ - a suspect in the the Ripper murders.
You can get your copy of ‘The Locksmith’ Copycatz, Braunton Post Office, J&S Wensley and Tarka Books in Barnstaple, amongst others for the price of £8.99.

WOULD YOU LIKE TO JOIN OUR COMMUNITY SPEED WATCH TEAM
One of the most common subjects bought up when we speak to the public is speeding vehicles. About 16 years ago we set up a community speed watch team in Braunton that has grown successfully over the years to include a team at Knowle. Both teams of volunteers work closely together with the sole aim of helping to make the roads in our area safer. The teams are Police approved and trained and they monitor sites that have been identified as having a speeding issue, which are then risk assessed by us. Our colleagues in the roads policing team will often go out and support the teams sessions and deal with the more serious offenders at the road side.
The CSW teams normally go out a couple of times a week for an hour or two at a time and can use any of the different Police approved sites of which there are about a dozen.
Are you interested in giving an hour or two a week to make a difference to your community? This is a voluntary role where you are trained and supported by the Police but act independently as a team to make their own arrangements to go out and hold a session at anytime during the hours of daylight and for as long and often as you want. The sessions are normally held by teams of 3, so the more volunteers we have, the more sessions we can hold. The teams use a speed gun to monitor the vehicles speeds at the various sites so if a driver is found to be breaking the speed limit the vehicle details are recorded. Data sheets are sent to us, and warning letters are then sent to the vehicles registered keepers. Persistent offenders will be identified, and their details passed to our roads policing team to take more positive action.
If you are interested and would like to know more, please email me, Andy Frisby on 30204@dc.police.uk with your contact details and I will call you to talk over the role and answer any questions you may have.

CROYDE OCEAN TRIATHLON FUNDRAISING HEROES
The Croyde Ocean Triathlon being held on 14th July 2024 will be the second year that the stunning and savage event will be donating 100% of the profits to charity. This event held in the beautiful North Devon coastline aims to have an impact on its community by not only holding a fun, exciting and sustainable event but by raising much needed funds for charities at the same time.
The event is now owned and operated by local environmental charity Plastic Free North Devon (PFND) and their ethos is clear - raise money to help protect and improve the environment but also to help other charities to raise funds too.
The event offers charity places for anyone to take up, with an offered split of any proceeds 50/50 with Plastic Free North Devon and the charity of the participants choice. The event is also directly supporting local charities: Family Compass, Royal Devons Hospital Charity and Children's Hospice South West by offering full charity places enabling them to receive 100% of their fundraising targets.
Jo Hibberd, Race Director says: ‘Working with the community is an integral part of how we work here at the Croyde Ocean Triathlon. From local lifeguards being on duty and giving advice to the team of volunteers that kindly help us run the day. Using the event to help more charities raise funds is just an extension of this. We really want to encourage more fundraisers than ever to take up this challenge and if not head to the fundraising page and make a donation to help them meet their fundraising targets!’
So far our entrants are raising money for: Dogs Trust Ilfracombe, FiG (Families in Grief), Royal British Legion, British Heart Foundation, Ilfracombe Pilot Gig Club, Blue Marine Foundation, Lighthouse Construction Industry Charity, The Wave Project and The Warmley Wheelers with many more in the pipeline.
There is still time to sign up to be part of an amazing event AND raise money for charity at the same time! Here are some of those who have taken on the epic challenge to raise money for their chosen charity and PFND
Hannah, Luke and Anna are raising money as a team for the Brain Tumor Support after Luke’s life was turned upside down in 2017 when he was diagnosed with a brain tumor. When recovering from major surgery and extensive radiotherapy it became clear that his active and healthy lifestyle plays a huge part in his body’s ability to continue to fight the tumor and Brain Tumor Support are still supporting Luke on his journey with free therapy and independent calls. Hannah will be swimming, Luke is taking on the hilly cycle and Anna will be finishing with the trail run.
Thomas Pate is raising money for the British Heart Foundation (BHF) and this is why he chose this charity alongside Plastic Free North Devon: ‘Having lost my father at such a young age to heart disease, I feel passionate about the research BHF do, and I hope my contributions to the charity help others going through this terrible disease.
To advertise call 07561 890 588 or email mag@ex33.co.uk 22
Little did I know being around 8 years old, this disease would not only impact my life forever, but hundreds of thousands around me.
Of PFND Tom stated ‘Being out in the natural environment is a huge must for me, it is so important to relax, unwind and destress. Therefore, keeping our great North Devon coastlines clean is a must.’
Lucie Sheard is taking on the Croyde Tri after stumbling upon it while on holiday one summer. She is raising money for the Warmly Wheelers, alongside PFND, which is a cycling scheme that gives everyone a chance to get into cycling - a sport which has become close to my heart and I truly believe has the power to transform lives. Set up in 2014, this Bristol scheme provides cycling opportunities for people with health conditions and supported needs. Relying on donations and volunteers, they offer specialist equipment and a safe, friendly environment to assist people who would normally find it difficult to ride a bike. Lucie says ‘The course has thrown storms and heat waves at me so far... so I'm excited to see what this year has in store!’
Andy Marsh is raising money for The Dogs Trust, Ilfracombe after losing his beloved family dog last year. This charity is close to his heart alongside his love for the North Devon landscape.
Phoebe Charnely is raising money for The Blue Marine Foundation and says “Both these charities have a great impact on our environment and oceans, committed to creating a better place! I am competing in my first ever Tri in Devon in support of these two charities, please support me on this silly adventure!”
Hamish Johnstone is raising funds for Family Compass. He says about his fundraising: “There is a mental health crisis among young people right now and it's never been more important to help them get the support they need, when they need it. The Croyde Triathlon is super tough, but it's even tougher facing challenges with your mental health and there being no-one who can help.”
Connor Bacon is raising 100% of his total for Plastic Free North Devon
“The Plastic Free North Devon community is something I have been well aware of and having Croyde as such a major part of our life really brings it home. It's no secret that plastic is one of the biggest threats to our planet and especially our oceans and beaches, however it's all a major part of our lives, I'm 99.99% sure that if you're reading this you have plastic in your hand or on your person... That's just the way it is at the moment, but that doesn't mean we can't stop pushing to reduce the use where possible.”
If you would like to support any of our fundraisers and help them reach their targets please click on the PFND Fundraising Pages to donate. If you are not in a position to donate please share to help us raise as much money as possible for our fantastic support fundraising pots!
The event is always looking for volunteers to help out on the day with marshaling, helping out competitors and just generally making the event run smoothly, it's a really heart warming event to be part of. Go green with your Spring Clean and support the Age UK Barnstaple shop
With winter behind us, the Age UK shop in Roundswell is calling on the local community to spring clean the sustainable way and donate their unwanted items to be sold on to be loved again.
As well as getting homes clean and ready for the warmer months, donating to Age UK’s charity shops is a great way of recycling unwanted items and reducing waste. So far this year donations to the Charity’s shops have avoided 700,000 kilos going into landfill and saved 10 million kilos of CO2e.
Locals can also help to reduce their environmental footprint by shopping for spring in the Age UK Barnstaple shop. Age UK’s charity shops support the circular economy by extending the life of items. Shoppers can choose from a range of pre-loved clothing, accessories, toys, books and homeware - perfect for new season looks, gifts and updating homes.
Data from YouGov Profiles shows that a third (33%) of consumers have already chosen to buy second hand items in order to be more environmentally responsible, with 30% using charity shops to purchase these items. Age UK hopes to encourage more people to shop sustainably and has created a list of tips to help get people started*
Supporting Age UK shops helps raise funds to support older people. Money raised from the Charity’s shops goes towards Age UK’s vital services, including the Telephone Friendship Service, free and confidential Advice Line and The Silver Line Helpline.
Lisa Wisdom, Personal Stylish and owner of Style with Wisdom, said, “I’d encourage everyone to be more eco-conscious and check out Age UK’s charity shops. Charity shops are the perfect place for finding unique items for gifts or to update your wardrobe.
“I’ve created a series of spring looks by visiting Age UK charity shops including layering pieces, footwear and accessories. Not only are these perfect for the warmer weather, but I won’t find everyone else wearing the same. The best thing is I know that by supporting Age UK, I am also supporting older people across the country.”
Cathy King, Shop Manager at the Age UK Barnstaple shop, said, “We want to inspire locals to join the sustainable movement and are encouraging them to come and visit us this Spring. We are always on the look-out for new donations and have a wide range of new Spring stock. Not only will you be helping to reduce waste and landfill, but you’ll be helping raise vital funds for Age UK so that it can continue supporting older people.”
When donating items, the Age UK Roundswell shop is also encouraging people to make their donations worth an extra 25% for the Charity by signing up to Gift Aid. Simply filling out a basic form when dropping off donations means Age UK will receive an extra 25p from the government for every £1 that is raised from donated goods.
Age UK has over 250 shops across England and Wales. To find your nearest Age UK shop visit: www.ageuk.org.uk/shops Shoppers can also pick up items via Age UK’s eBay page www.ebay.co.uk/ ageuk

1. Ditch fast fashion
Purchasing pre-loved clothing is not only a great way of preventing clothing and textiles going to waste and landfill, but can also save money. Charity shops often house a range of unique items, including one-off pieces and designer goods, which can also set you apart from the crowd.
2. Donate old toys
Parents often feel their homes are overrun with toys and it can be hard to know what to do with items your children no longer play with. Reduce your clutter by donating them to be sold on to be loved again. Second hand toys and games can also make great gifts, as well as saving you money at times like Christmas, which can be costly.
3. Get to know your local charity shops
Often charity shops will sell different things or specialise in different items. Some may sell more toys or electrical items than others. Age UK has a mix of charity shops including fashion boutiques and furniture stores. Getting to know the shops near you can save you time when looking for something specific.
4. Visit local charity shops regularly
Often charity shops put out new stock each day, popping in regularly means you’re more likely to spot a bargain before someone else does!
5. Get to know the shop staff
Age UK shop staff and volunteers are a friendly bunch! Not only are they on hand to help and have a chat, they also know about what’s been donated. If you’re looking for something specific, they can help you find it or keep an eye out for you.
6. Get upcycling!
Turn an old pair of jeans or piece of furniture into something new and beautiful by changing the length, adding embellishments, or painting them a new colour. Not only will you be reducing waste, you’ll have an item unique to you and a new hobby!
7. Shop with an open mind
Visit charity shops with an open mind and think outside the box! Furniture can look different when in your own home, or with a lick of paint. Clothing can be paired with other items to create unique and stylish outfits, or upcycled to create new pieces.

New Tariffs for Caen Street & Chaloners Road Car Parks
New charges are to be introduced in the Caen Street and Chaloners Road car parks this year. The new charges see a slight increase and will be effective from June 2024 and will now include charging on a Sunday from 9amto6pm.
Unfortunately, costs such as resurfacing have increased significantly recently and it is necessary to build reserves for this and other works to be completed in the future. Also, we have had to undertake significant tree works and unexpectedly replace large sections of the wall where vehicles had knocked intoitmakingitunsafe.
After the running and maintenance costs of the car park are covered, the income is used towards looking after thevillagesuch astheParishCouncil
owned green spaces and, as mentioned in our previous newsletter, some of the income from the car park enables the council to offer grants to support local organisations such as projects run by the museums and library, Christmas lights and voluntarydrivers.
The charges remain reasonable compared to other local car parks and the very low 30p cash only option for 30 minutes is still available. If you are paying by card or on the Flowbird app the minimum charge is £0.90 for 1 hour. The Parish Council absorbs the costs for the card and app payments and it would not be financially viable for us to offer the 30p rate by these methods of payment. Our signage will be updatedtoreflectthis.
Our car park permits costs were not increased this year (£240 annual cost) and remain great value at less than £5.00 per week/£0.66 per day. - less than the cost of 1 hour parking! Please see our website or contact the Parish Council for further details.

Lizzy is an adorable two-year-old Terrier cross looking for a home at Dogs Trust Ilfracombe’s Rehoming Centre.
Lizzy enjoys people making a fuss and is always excited to see you, her favourite thing to do is have a game of fetch and she will happily play for hours! She may be small, but Lizzy will happily go for long walks, she’s looking for a quiet, rural location as she can be worried by seeing other dogs in close proximity.
Lizzy’s new owners can continue to help Lizzy with her dog socialisation skills using positive reward training, she already enjoys tasty treats including cheese and chicken. She’s able to make doggy pals with the right introduction and has a few walking buddies currently at the rehoming centre. Lizzy is a blank canvas when it comes to her basic training and will need some support with housetraining, but she’s a fast learner and is currently learning a ‘sit’, and to respond to her name when out and about.
Elise Watson, Dogs Trust Ilfracombe’s Rehoming Centre Manager said: “Lizzy is a pocket-rocket with a big personality and oodles of energy! She’s looking for a loving home with adult adopters and will need to be in a home where she’s the only four-legged friend. She would love a home with a garden and high fences. Lizzy adores company and any time left alone will need to be built up gradually. She would best suit a quiet home environment with a predictable routine, we’re hoping she finds a good match soon!”
If you think that you could be a potential match for Lizzy or to find out more about any of the dogs available for rehoming at Dogs Trust, head to www.dogstrust.org.uk/ rehoming

Pawsitively amazing! Woofstock - the UK’s only dog-friendly two-night music festival - celebrates it TENTH year with a cracking line-up of tribute acts and activities (and, no, you
Woofstock UK - the UK’s only award-winning, two-night/three-day dog-and-family-friendly music festival - is back and bigger than ever, celebrating its tenth anniversary in 2024 with a stellar lineup.
Crowd-pleasing tribute acts including Dua Lipa, Taylor Swift, Elton John and Dolly Parton covers will be taking to the stage at the historic Powderham Castle, Exeter, from the evening of Friday 14 to Sunday 16 June.
Pooches are more than welcome - and will be well-catered for with activities, demonstrations including police and gun dog displays and contests during which your pup can show off their agility, flyball skills and obedience. They can even paint with their owners in the Pawcasso tent, and tuck into dog ice-cream.
But you don’t need to bring a four-legged friend to attend - there’s also a range of workshops on offer for human guests too - including circus skills, climbing wall and archery - and the kids will love Bounce Land! There’s also a shopping village, delicious food, a range of speakers, a puppy area and a dog-friendly beach.
Day tickets start from £11.50 for adults, or pack up your tent, camper or caravan and camp for the weekend, from an extra £60 in addition to ticket prices. Or stay in style inside a fivemetre round bell tent with the VIP (Very Important Pooches) glamping experience from £400 including VIP tickets.
Heather and Carol Nesbitt-Bayley, from Wembury, in south Devon, who have two pooches, set up Woofstock in 2014, in honour of Heather’s springer spaniel Harry, who saved her life when she contracted a rare illness in 2012, and was forced to spend 10 days in intensive care.

It’s thanks to Harry, who sadly passed away in 2019 that Heather received the medical attention she needed.
Heather, 52, said: “I wanted to make an impact and do something crazy and amazing, meaningful and important to thank Harry. Woofstock will always be Harry’s legacy and a way for us all to celebrate and thank the animals of the world for all they do for us.
“Woofstock is a festival of love. Once you have been once, you’ll be hooked - people come from around the world! Whilst the event is built with dogs in mind, you don’t need a dog to come. The music side of the festival is as equal to other music festivals in the UK.
“There is no other festival like this in the UK. We don’t take everything too seriously. Woofstock is about having fun, meeting others and forging lifelong friendships. There is no reason not to come really just don’t bring your cat!
“Apart from spending time doing fun things with your dog, the best thing about Woofstock is being among like-minded souls. The feel-good factor that comes from being surrounded by dogs and their dog-loving people, in an atmosphere which is totally chilled, is difficult to quantify and we would urge anyone who hasn’t experienced it to keep an eye on the website for details of future dates and venues.”
Woofstock attracts thousands of visitors every year and promotes international animal welfare whilst supporting several animal charities.
WHAT’S ON AT WOOFSTOCK 2024:
There’s something to keep everyone’s feet tapping and tails wagging across the weekend with brilliant tribute acts. There’s even an area for dogs to enjoy the music away from the stage to protect their sensitive ears.
Line up: Friday (from 5pm): Joanna Cooke, Dua Lipa, Young Elton, Avril Lavinge and headliners, I Love Amp featuring Kat Savage. Saturday (from 5pm): Superstition, Definitely Dolly, Adam Parker Brown as Tom Jones, Pure Paloma and headliner, Katy Ellis as Taylor Swift. Sunday: RSVP Bhangra - the UK’s no.1 festival bhangra band, Joanna Cooke plus band and headliner Fleetwood Shack.
Activities: Learn impressive tricks at circus school, tackle the climbing wall or show off your precision skills at archery. Kids will love burning off some energy in Bounce Land!
Shopping: Treat your furry companion to the latest in doggy fashion, accessories, toys, and treats - including doggie ice-cream or treat yourself at the diverse array of vendors and exhibitors.
Food and drink: Indulge in a variety of scrumptious treats at the food stalls and trucks offering everything from gourmet snacks to refreshing beverages (including alcoholic drinks).
Expert advice: Expert-led workshops and demonstrations covering topics such as training tips, nutrition advice, and pet care essentials. There’s the Best In Show (open to all) on the Saturday and on Sunday enter your pooch into the fastest garden digging competition or tackle some hay bale racing!

Cat of the Month -
Loki
Meet Loki, just turning 2, and unfortunately made homeless when the family who took him in as a kitten had to let him go. Taken aback by his sudden change of circumstances he's a bit shy at the moment, but his fosterers are giving him the time and attention which are bringing him back to his old self.
A typically lively and playful youngster his bright eyes and attentive gaze show his potential. Loki, we are told, loves human company - although not young children - but loves time outdoors too. Apparently he really enjoys the company of other cats as well, which certainly isn't always the case, but isn't a fan of dogs!
Like all CP cats, Loki has been Health Checked by the vet, neutered, microchipped, de-fleed and wormed. Now, he's ready and waiting to add his personality to a suitable home.
Could that be yours?
