ello and welcome to the June edition.

As I write this, the country is looking forward to the momentous, historic and unprecedented Platinum Jubilee of Her Majesty The Queen as she marks 70 years on the throne.

Elizabeth II, who turned 96 in April, is being honoured with an extensive programme of events, as well as an extra bank holiday across the UK.

We have put together a Jubilee special for you, with some very interesting information. Find this on pages 22-27.

We also have some local events taking place which you can find out more about through the magazine.

Also featured this month is a wonderful story about a local lady who has just had an amazing birthday 106 years young! Happy belated birthday Vera!!

In addition to this the Barnstaple Fringe Theatre Festival is happening this year, hooray! and we have features including a Guide Dogs appeal and ‘My Pet as Therapy’. Well worth a read.

FEATURE Somerset resident celebrates 106th birthday in style at Barnstaple care home Vera Crisp, a resident at Care South’s Fremington Manor care home in Barnstaple, Devon celebrated her milestone 106th birthday on Wednesday 20th April.

Vera joined the home two and a half years ago and was born in Highbridge, Somerset in her grandparent’s pub, The Lamb Inn. A local girl, Vera lived in Taunton before moving to the East End of London with her late husband, Sidney, where she continued to live until moving to Fremington Manor to be closer to her family. After leaving school, she worked for a firm manufacturing clothes and was a brilliant machinist. Vera made wedding dresses for both her daughters, as well as all their bridesmaids dresses. At the end of a long working life, Vera went onto work for a firm of stockbrokers where she had her own client portfolios.

Vera is a proud mother of her two daughters, Patricia and Jean, and her hobbies included greyhound racing, fishing, cooking, and travelling extensively with Sidney where they visited Germany, France, and Spain amongst other places. In her younger years, Vera was a fantastic ballroom dancer and would drive herself to attend dance classes, which was unusual for a young woman in the 1930’s.

Vera could put her hand to anything and would be an expert in weeks of learning a new skill, including making smock dresses for her three granddaughters and did enough knitting to keep the entire family warm in winter. Vera’s eldest daughter, Patricia still wears an Aran jumper Vera made nearly forty years ago for her grandson. As a keen watcher of sport, Vera enjoys following the rugby, athletics, and snooker.

Vera celebrated her 106th birthday at Fremington Manor surrounded by family, friends, and fellow residents, who certainly made sure her big day was a special one, with Appledore Band, a local community brass band in attendance.

Vera enjoyed her favourite meal, fish and chips, and also had a slice of cake and lovely cup of tea whilst residents and staff sang happy birthday.

Dawn Berry, Activities Lead at Fremington Manor, said: “Vera turning 106 is a remarkable feat and we were delighted to help her mark this extraordinary day with a special party just for her. Our job is to help support and nurture our residents to help them keep living fulfilled lives and it was wonderful for Vera to be able to celebrate her special birthday with family, friends and residents. All our staff work hard to ensure our residents’ birthdays are truly memorable occasions.”

FEATURE ‘My Pet As Therapy’ Share your pet photos and support North Devon Hospice We all feel lonely at times, it’s a natural human emotion. But what if you were facing the end of your life alone? While many shy away from thinking about what our final days, weeks or months may be like, North Devon Hospice believe that every person is a story, and the ending matters. People at the end of their lives should have access to a pet if that is their wish – and that is where Gozo the little white puppy, comes in.

North Devon Hospice and national charity Pets As Therapy are asking for pictures of your pets to highlight the huge positive effect our pets can have on our mental health. Gozo is the furry and four-legged face of the ‘My Pet As Therapy’ campaign, along with his owner Paul Jewels, a dedicated volunteer for both the hospice and Pets As Therapy.

When Paul suffered a stroke, his family convinced him to get a puppy as they hoped it would be therapeutic. Four years on, Paul and Gozo are inseparable and Paul shares Gozo’s calming and fun presence with everyone they meet.

“His job in life is to make people smile,” said Paul.

“Before the pandemic, Gozo visited North Devon Hospice every week to spread some joy among patients and families on the bedded unit. Unfortunately, due to COVID restrictions, he hasn’t been able to visit since 2020 but we have been volunteering for Pets As Therapy at local vaccination centres across North Devon.”

In 2021, Gozo and North Devon Hospice received the highest accolade a voluntary organisation can get, The Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service, making him the only therapy pet ever to receive the honour.

And he has also proved popular with patients, with one saying: “He’s just beautiful, and a very good boy. I’ve had large dogs all my life, but he’s just the right size to come in and sit on people’s laps. He’s as good as gold, and he brings a lot of joy.”

In a digital campaign launched alongside the start of Mental Health Awareness week (9 May) and running across June and July, North Devon Hospice have joined with national cause Pets As Therapy to raise vital funds for both charities by celebrating the positive effect pets have on our mental health and wellbeing.

To get involved with the campaign, share a picture of you and your pet and a message about why they are so important to your mental health and wellbeing, along with a donation. Every photo shared will be entered into a competition to win a host of pet-friendly prizes including a pet friendly holiday at the fabulous lodges at Stonerush Lakes, Looe, Cornwall.

FEATURE Barnstaple’s very own theatre festival will be returning this summer between the 23rd – 26th June. The festival is in its 15th year and brings Barnstaple to life with a mix of different performances. There is always something for everyone: storytelling, comedy, historical drama, dance, family shows and much, much more.

This year the festival will welcome 170 performances of over 60 different shows during the four days. Performances will take place in venues all over Barnstaple, from traditional venues like the Queen’s Theatre, to shows you happen upon in Barnstaple High Street.

Gill, one of the festival directors, explains the venues and pricing: - “On-line sales for 6 ticketed venues opens on June 1st. In-person ticket sales open June 20th in The Queen’s Theatre foyer. Performances in 11 other venues are 'pay-what-youwill' - there will be a bucket collection at those events!

Sight loss charity Guide Dogs is appealing for volunteers in Barnstaple who could help local people with sight loss get out and about and back into the community.

Guide Dogs’ My Sighted Guide service supports individuals living with sight loss to get out and about in their local area by improving their confidence, mobility, and independence – all of which could not be achieved without the support and dedication of life-changing My Sighted Guide volunteers.

Sally Yigit, of Guide Dogs, says, “Many people with sight loss experience feelings of isolation and lose their confidence. This has been made worse by the pandemic. We’ve seen how vital volunteer sighted guides are in helping people with sight loss to rebuild their confidence and regain their independence. If you think you could help someone living with sight loss in your area, we’d urge you to get in touch.”

Partnerships are matched based on common interests and volunteers can give as much or as little time as they like – just a few hours a week can make all the difference to someone.

A Sighted Guide service user said about his experience, “I couldn’t have asked for a better partner. I am really happy with being able to access the gym and use the rowing machine. I am becoming more fit and have better stamina since being able to access the gym regularly” Volunteers must be 18 or over and an Enhanced Disclosure check is required as part of the role. Full training and support is provided.
