Monica has been busy updating our website, including adding a Community Calendar of groups and events, so if you need inspiration, you will know what is going on and hopefully you can pick something that you will enjoy!! Don’t forget to check out our website and like our Facebook page. We are always open to constructive suggestions, so if there is anything that you feel is missing in the Braunton area, let us know and if feasible will do our best to make things happen.
Our Wellbeing Walks have started!!
We welcomed the sun along to our first Wellbeing Walk!
A light stroll towards the Fire Station, taking in the local scenery and listening for birds.
One participant stated that it was their first ever guided walk and had they not attended, they would not have seen anyone for at least 2 days. Whilst others had decided to come along to meet interesting new people.
Either way the benefits of walking are huge and sometimes being part of a group, makes you get out and participate, whereas if just you, it is too easy to decide against it and put it off for another day!
Meeting point: Braunton Countryside Centre, in Caen Car Park
Days & times: Every other Wednesday 10.30am-11.30am. Please arrive 10 minutes early. (Times include pit stops and chances to take in the scenery). End time is dependent on the groups needs and abilities. Followed by a free hot drink at The Braunton Countryside Centre.
Dates: 21st June, 05th July, 19th July, 02nd August, 16th August, 30th August, 13th September, 27th September and fortnightly thereafter.
Walk details - A gentle, slow pace around the village taking in nature and the surroundings.

Do you like...being outdoors, discovering new places, meeting people and preserving the countryside?
If so, have you considered joining the Ramblers? Not only do they play a valuable role in checking and ensuring the maintenance of our footpaths, but they also offer a variety of walks exploring the local area.
Walks of varying lengths are offered twice a week-the weekday walks tend to be shorter (4-6 miles), while the weekend walks are usually longer (8-12 miles).
You can find out about all the walks on our website: ramblers.org.uk/north-devon including a brief description of the walk, its grading and details of where to meet.
It does not cost a lot to join, the walks are free- all our walk leaders are volunteers, and we try to car-share or use the bus where possible. If you would like to try it out first, you can join us for 3 walks before signing up. Once you have joined, you can then walk with other Rambler groups all over the country! Why not give it a go?

Never leave a dog unattended in a vehicle, even on a mildly warm day. Dogs can die when left unattended in a vehicle, even when it is in the shade, a window is open and there is water available.
The British weather can switch very suddenly so even on cloudy days leaving a dog in a car or other vehicle can prove fatal.
Every year the Kennel Club hears reports of dogs being cooked alive after being left in vehicles in hot weather, a situation which can so easily be avoided.
For those travelling with their dogs during the summer months, the Kennel Club has Advice on their website. www.thekennelclub.org.uk
Never
1 Leave a dog unattended in a vehicle, even with the window open and water available. Take them out and leave them in a secure, cool place with access to shade and water or take them with you, there are plenty of places that are part of the Kennel Club's Be Dog Friendly campaign and will allow dogs in.
2. Let your dog take part in unnecessary exertion in hot weather or stand in exposed sun light for extended lengths of time.
3. Pass by a dog if you see one suffering in a car or other vehicle. Whether it be in a supermarket car park or at a show, make sure you let someone in authority know and if in doubt call the police on emergency number 999
What to do if your dog overheats:
1. Contact the vet immediately.
2. Move the dog out of the heat.
3. Offer the dog cool, rather than cold, water for small drinks if the dog is still conscious.
4. If possible, fan the dog with cool air.
5. Wrap in cool, damp towels or spray with cool, not cold, water. Pay particular attention to the head.
6. Cool the dog's tongue by dabbing with a cold, damp cloth.

Dogs Trust Ilfracombe issues appeal for dog foster parents
Dogs Trust Ilfracombe is issuing an urgent appeal to dog lovers to help them care for more dogs in need by becoming volunteer foster carers.
The team is facing a record number of enquiries from people wanting to hand over their dog, so more than ever they need volunteer foster carers to provide a temporary home for dogs of all ages, shapes and sizes who have nowhere else to turn.
Some dogs that are in Dogs Trust care need additional TLC, such as medical or post-operative, for which a home environment can be more appropriate than a kennel environment. Similarly, very young dogs or those with additional behavioral challenges will thrive in a temporary home.
Allie Kaufman, coordinator of the Home from Home fostering scheme at Dogs Trust Ilfracombe, says:
“We are facing a crisis as our kennel space is really stretched. We need to act now to be there for as many dogs as possible.
“Fostering a dog is a wonderful opportunity for dog lovers who are currently unable to have a dog of their own. We cover the essential costs, and you will be playing the most important role, giving stability, love, and care to a dog in need as you prepare them for life in their forever home.
Emily Huckle says she has never looked back since becoming a foster carer for Dogs Trust Ilfracombe last year. She says:
"I sadly lost my dog last year and due to my work patten, I am unable to have another dog full time. I decided that as well as getting my doggy fix volunteering at Dogs Trust, I could now also foster a dog at home. Although I cannot commit to adopting due to shift work, I can provide a period of time out of kennels for those longer-term dogs or those who struggle in a kennel environment.
“It is so lovely for the dogs, as well as for my benefit, as I can give the dogs a little break from kennel life. Taking a resident dog home also helps the Dogs Trust team find out more information about them to be able to find them the best possible home.
To advertise call 07561 890 588 or email mag@ex33.co.uk 28
”
My favourite thing about fostering is when I see the dogs in my care start to relax and seeing their personalities start to shine through, it is so worthwhile.
“I have fostered the same dog on several occasions, and it is so nice to see their progress and become increasingly relaxed each time they come. I love that I am making a difference and giving dogs a lovely experience.”
Since the Home from Home scheme was launched at Dogs Trust in 2013 almost 12,000 dogs have been cared for by foster carers. With a current waiting list of dogs needing to come into Dogs Trust Ilfracombe, Allie and the team are asking local dog lovers to get in touch and welcome a dog into their life temporarily.
Allie says:
“We have dogs who are ready to be fostered from a few days to several months and we can be really flexible. We know life can be unpredictable, so we make sure foster carers can always take a break when they need one.
“Our foster carers give our dogs valuable experience of home life, and they get to know what makes them tick; they can tell us everything from what are their favourite toys and treats to the kind of walks they enjoy to where they like to sleep. All that information gives us the best chance of ensuring our gorgeous dogs find their ideal home when the time is right.
“
So, if you think you can open your heart and your home to help a dog get back on their paws, please get in touch.”
If you would like to apply to become a volunteer foster carer, please go to dogstrust.org.uk/foster or call 020 7837 0006.

Eclipse is a six-month-old Collie cross looking for a home from Dogs Trust Ilfracombe Rehoming Centre.
Eclipse is now finding his paws after a difficult start to life. His carers are helping him build confidence as he explores the world around him. He is a lively, playful, and boisterous pup who enjoys playing with toys as an outlet for his energy. He loves to play rug- and -tug and likes to run around with his toys in his mouth. Eclipse likes to socialise with other dogs, he has many pals here at the rehoming centre, he enjoys going for walks with them and having a rough and tumble play with suitable playmates. Eclipse is new to basic training, he loves treats, which is a great place to start, he is learning a ‘sit’, he has already picked up on his name response, and he is currently learning that car rides can be fun.
Eclipse has never lived indoors before so will need adopters that are patient and understanding, and have the time to help him settle, and to teach him his basic training, including housetraining. Eclipse will need a home with adults who can help direct his puppy mouthing onto toys. Eclipse will need to be the only dog in the home so he can have all the treats and attention just for him. We have no history of Eclipse with cats, small furries, or livestock. Eclipse would love lots of opportunities to socialise with other canines when out and about.
If you think you could give Eclipse the loving home that he deserves please take a look at his profile on Dogs Trust’s website www.dogstrust.org.uk/rehoming to begin the virtual adoption process.

Cat of the Month - Biba
Biba is a delightful cat with a quietly friendly temperament who greets you by stretching up on her hind legs, and lifting her head up to your hand. Biba is a sleek and soft beautiful cat who is curious and active. She was initially rather shy but now loves to seek out affection and will happily sit on a lap for a brush or a stroke. Biba is very interested in the outdoors, looking out at the wildlife from the pen window and she loves to curl up in a sun patch while watching the world go by.
Biba will need a peaceful home as the only cat, so that she can have the love and attention that she needs.
