Never leave a dog unattended in a vehicle, even on a mildly warm day. Dogs can die when left unattended in a vehicle, even when it is in the shade, a window is open and there is water available. The British weather can switch very suddenly so even on cloudy days leaving a dog in a car or other vehicle can prove fatal. Every year the Kennel Club hears reports of dogs being cooked alive after being left in vehicles in hot weather, a situation which can so easily be avoided. For those travelling with their dogs during the summer months, the Kennel Club has Advice on their website. www.thekennelclub.org.uk Never 1. Leave a dog unattended in a vehicle, even with the window open and water available. Take them out and leave them in a secure, cool place with access to shade and water or take them with you, there are plenty of places that are part of the Kennel Club's Be Dog Friendly campaign and will allow dogs in. 2. Let your dog take part in unnecessary exertion in hot weather or stand in exposed sunlight for extended lengths of time. 3. Pass by a dog if you see one suffering in a car or other vehicle. Whether it be in a supermarket car park or at a show, make sure you let someone in authority know and if in doubt call the police on emergency number 999. What to do if your dog overheats: 1. Contact the vet immediately. 2. Move the dog out of the heat. 3. Offer the dog cool, rather than cold, water for small drinks if the dog is still conscious. 4. If possible, fan the dog with cool air. 5. Wrap in cool, damp towels or spray with cool, not cold, water. Pay particular attention to the head. 6. Max, who has been awarded the British Empire Medal, has raised over £638,000 for the North Devon Hospice, raising the money by sleeping in a tent gifted to him by his elderly neighbour, Rick Abbott, who died of cancer in 2020. Speaking at the award ceremony, Max said: “It feels absolutely incredible to be awarded this. I never thought it (sleeping in his tent) would last this long. It’s been an incredible experience though, and I’ve not regretted any of it. I’m so grateful to everyone who has donated.” Max’s fundraising efforts have so far raised enough money to fund 16 community nurses for North Devon Hospice. Queen’s Platinum Jubilee Celebrations Liz Spear (Braunton Parish Council Chair) was very pleased to be asked to formally open the special Platinum Jubilee Village Fair on 3rd June on Braunton Recreation Ground. Everyone had a great day and to reiterate our thanks to all involved, and for those who missed it, here is her speech: "Welcome to this special Village Fair on this wonderful Platinum Jubilee Weekend - organised by Braunton Rotary Caen and Braunton Rotary. A huge thank you to all stallholders for providing such a huge variety of attractions and refreshments here today. I hope you will be generous to them with your support today.

The Parish Council were very pleased recently that Rotary, working with local pupils, planted 133 trees on Parish Council land to commemorate the Platinum Jubilee and the Queen's Green Canopy - an enduring reminder and tribute to Her Majesty. On behalf of the residents of Braunton and Braunton Parish Council, a massive thank you to our two Braunton Rotary Clubs which we are fortunate to have in our village, for all their work in the community, helping with local projects and also their fundraising activities and donations to charities in Braunton and much further afield.

'Free Bus Travel announced for advance ticket holders to North Devon Show' THE SHOW GOES ON… It’s back, and it’s going to be better than ever! After a twoyear Covid enforced absence, The North Devon Show goes full steam ahead on Wednesday 3rd August, with Livestock Classes now open for entry. Celebrating the region’s rural, agricultural and equestrian heritage, this year’s Show also features a host of entertainment and activities, all geared at making it a special day out for all the family. Show Secretary Theresa Soanes said, “We’re all delighted that the Show is back, and from the messages we’ve received it’s been really missed by the North Devon public. A number of visiting tourists enjoy the event too, and this year we’d like to make it as family friendly as possible, with extra entertainment laid on to accompany all the traditional events.” Regular events include most of the usual livestock classes, plus Pig and Poultry displays and a Horticultural Show. This year a new ‘Food Village’ is set to replace the old food hall alongside a Crafts and Gifts Marquee, Trade Stands, Equestrian events, Dog Shows and all the usual Main Ring activities. A bumper side show of entertainment is planned including a Music Stage, Circus, strongman Mighty Adrian Smith, a BMX Display team, Laser Clay Pigeon Shooting, Vintage Cars and Tractors, plus children’s fairground rides and much more. The venue remains the same, at Barton Farm, Umberleigh, but this year an agreement between the Show’s organisers and Stagecoach means that FREE bus travel is available for anyone purchasing an advance ticket. Theresa Soanes said, “I’m so pleased we can offer this to everyone who buys a ticket in advance. Busses will go from Barnstaple, Bideford, Torrington and South Molton, plus a link from Umberleigh railway station too. It really encourages use of public transport and it allows you to be dropped off right at the entrance, with priority access for all the busses, so no worrying about car queues. New pods to shelter North Devon's rough sleepers Four new temporary accommodation pods have been installed in Barnstaple, thanks to funding secured by North Devon Council and Freedom Community Alliance. The pods have been installed inside the Freedom Centre in Barnstaple and are now available to use. The pods will provide safe overnight temporary accommodation for four rough sleepers at any one time and are available through referrals to North Devon's Enhanced Outreach Service. Residents who stay in the pods will receive the support they require from the Enhanced Outreach team to enable them to progress into more settled accommodation. Funding for the pods was secured by the council from the Government's Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities (DLUHC) through their Rough Sleeper Initiative (RSI) funding. Freedom Community Alliance were successful in bidding for additional funding through the Contain Outbreak Management Fund (COMF), which was used to convert the warehouse space at the Freedom Centre and will fund overnight support for a 12 month period.

Lead Member for Housing at North Devon Council, Councillor Nicola Topham says: "We are thrilled to have been granted the funding that enabled us to buy the sleep pods. They will offer a safe haven for some of the most vulnerable members of our community whilst the Outreach team continues to work with each individual to get them the help they need and support them into more settled accommodation." Chief Executive of Freedom Community Alliance, Philip Noall says: “The initial idea to put four sleeping pods into the Freedom Centre came from the team in mid 2021. After liaising with architects, planners, building control and the fire authorities, funding was secured to undertake the refurbishments within the building. It’s been a long process getting to this point and I’m absolutely delighted that the project has now gone live. "Our desire was to create an environment that kept people safe and warm overnight instead of having to rough sleep on the streets. Whilst this accommodation is only temporary and is not a permanent solution to someone’s housing need it is an effective first step to breaking the cycle of rough sleeping. We are delighted to be partnering with North Devon Council on this new initiative.” The Enhanced Outreach team is made up of staff from the council, Devon Partnership Trust, Together Drug and Alcohol Services, the Freedom Community Alliance charity and Northern Devon Healthcare Trust. The main aim of the service is to support individuals who want to come off the streets into accommodation but the team also provides facilities such as showers and mobile phone charging for those who prefer to stay on the streets or have not yet been found suitable accommodation. Residents are asked to use the Street Link website to report a rough sleeper they are concerned about. More information about the work of Freedom Community Alliance is available on their website.
