We take this opportunity to wish all EX33 readers a very Happy New Year!

We would like to start the year by highlighting the magnificent work done by our group of community speedwatch volunteers who give up their free time to help make the roads of Braunton a safer place.

Over the last 12 months the team have carried out 64 sessions at 10 different Police approved speed watch sites in Braunton, Knowle, Wrafton and Saunton. They spent a total of 80 hours monitoring the speed of vehicles passing these locations and registered 545 vehicles as travelling at more than 35mph in the 30mph limit. All 545 registered owners of these vehicles received a warning letter in the post, with 4 being caught for a second time receiving a visit from the local neighbourhood police team.

As a result of the data collected by the CSW team the Police speed detection van was deployed to some of the locations where the average speed was recorded at the highest. Our Traffic officers now support the CSW team and go out with them to enforce the speed limits with the worst offenders being stopped by Police officers and dealt with at the roadside for speeding offences.

Its so encouraging to see the average speed coming down over the last couple of years at most of the sites they visit, showing that CSW does work.

We look forward to the team continuing their good work throughout 2024, making the streets of where we live safer.

As we reflect on the past year, we are very aware that charities like us have faced challenging times in 2023. With costs of heating and utilities at an all time level, we have had to rethink some of the ways we operate, namely closing for longer in the Winter and limiting hours. However, surprisingly our footfall has in fact gone up on the previous year, now standing at just over 5000 which is indeed very rewarding. Thank you to all our local residents who have come in and to the visitors from far and wide who visit beautiful North Devon, it is always a pleasure to see you.

In May, to mark the occasion of the Coronation of King Charles III, we held a Coronation draw, this was very successful and raised over £700. We have to thank the many local businesses for their generous donations of prizes, we had a wonderful response. During the year we also received a large donation from The Ladies Handbell Ringers, who have now disbanded also The Trefoil Guild and the Henry Williamson Society.

There is still considerable interest in local history and the Museum is full of displays, artefacts, books and maps. Our series Cradle to Grave, is popular with those doing family research, also seeking information about a property or business. Our research team are always keen to help, they are usually in the museum on Wednesday morning.

In November we had a lovely Coffee and Crafts morning and in December our Christmas Squares Draw was held, congratulations to all the winners. Regretfully, we are delaying the reopening of the museum until March 2024, we look forward to that and meeting you all again. Happy New Year to all.

We have ended the year on a high! The Braunton Group have worked hard throughout the past year, raising funds for Research into Cancer and with the help of the people of Braunton we have achieved more than we could have dreamed of ! The latest figures are as follows: Raised by Braunton Group - £5,777.42 Received from Funeral Directors - £8,663.02 Total £14,440.44 Sent to Cancer Research UK £14,028.73.

This is a remarkable achievement from a small group such as ourselves. We are all people who have suffered cancer in our families and have lost loved ones along the way. We know the desperate need for funding to enable clinical trials to be continued, some of which are carried out at the North Devon District Hospital in Barnstaple, also elsewhere in the West Country. The NHS does not fund research, it is only able to do so by groups such as ours, that is why we need your support so much.

Braunton does this, the response to our events always amazes us ! You are so generous.

There have been many milestones achieved in the past year, life saving treatments bought on line and hope for so many people.

Please continue to do your bit ..a direct debit is an easy way to give on a regular basis, a legacy in a Will or a collection at a funeral are other alternatives, but a coin in a collection bucket can make all the difference !

We all wish you a Happy Christmas and may 2024 bring us good health and happiness.

Braunton Recreation Ground Consultation Braunton Parish Council has received £66000 in Section 106 funding from North Devon Council to spend in Braunton Recreation Ground and are planning to purchase some active equipment which will be aimed at older children and teens (some items will be suitable for adults too). We have sent out a short questionnaire to year 6s and the Academy and also circulated information on social media. If you are a young person aged 10 or above we would be grateful for your feedback.

Devon County Council’s On-street Parking Scheme, Exeter Road, Braunton Despite opposition from Braunton Parish Council, Devon County Council are proposing to introduce pay and display parking along Exeter Road outside of the shops. The plan is to provide one ‘cash only’ pay and display parking meter for the proposed section of parking restriction.

The first hour will be free but motorists will need to obtain a ticket and display it in their vehicle.

•

Two hours stay will cost £0.80, with no return in one hour.

•

The existing taxi rank will be extended, doubling in size.

•

The parking restrictions will apply 365 days of the year.

The consultation runs from 7th December 2023 until 7th January 2024.

As Dora had been with Dogs Trust for over six months, she was classed as an Underdog, to the bafflement of staff - who couldn’t understand why no one wanted to take her home! But now Dora and her new family are looking forward to spending their first Christmas together.

Dora is a lovely girl who adores her food and exploring the outside world on walks – where she enjoys wearing a warm coat in the winter.

Cat of the Month - Molly Eight year old Molly with her Bengal colours and soft silky coat is a real beauty. Typically Bengal, she is clever, needs mental stimulation with cat toys, has a loud voice when she chooses to talk to you and does not like being held or restrained.

She has had a very quiet life and the upheaval of losing her home has been very stressful for her, so she may take a while to get to know and trust a new family. When she does, and despite being a little shy and nervous, she will love a bit of fuss and do lots of face rubs to tell you she approves.

Molly is used to having someone around in the home, and although not a lap cat has been a good companion even if it's just sharing the same room or sitting on the back of the sofa with you. She will need access to a garden and although she has not had the use of a catflap has always been able to come and go when she pleases. A home without any other pets or children would be best and preferably not a high density cat area. Bengals are accepted to be just a bit different from most other cats, so an adopter with previous experience of the breed would be ideal, or at least a previous cat owner who is willing to learn their ways. Are you that person who can give Molly the home she deserves?
