As we approach the end of the year it is worthwhile reviewing what we have done at the Museum in 2022.
The Museum opened in mid January on an uncertain note as there was still a lot of anxiety about Covid and the impact it was having on our lives. Many people were still hesitant to mix with others and limits on our freedom were still very evident.
However it was decided to go ahead with our usual Easter Egg tombola which we ran outside the museum. This was a great success and gave us heart to carry on as normal.
Footfall into the Museum was slow and it took some time to pick up. By the summer holiday season things were looking much brighter and the wonderful summer weather brought visitors to our area and many came to visit the Museum.
FiguresgatheredtotheendofNovembershowthatinexcessof4700people have come in this year. There were so many comments about the Museum and how informative it is. Much interest was shown in the display about the Bulb Farm, a venture which was quite remarkable in its time, by growing tulips and other spring flowers for the London market but also specifically selling the bulbs. The closure of the Railway Line was the key factor in the closure of the business after 100 years.
The project we are currently publicising is "The Trains Gone By". Stories are being collected about the railway and this has brought a lot of local interest. Southmead school has been partaking in a competition in which the children were asked to produce a story, either in words or picture, telling of how life was in those days, or imagining themselves in a similar situation. Judging has recently taken place. News of that to follow at a later date.
Perhaps you would like to be a Museum volunteer? There is always something unexpected turning up out of the blue which can be both intriguing and informative. We would be pleased to meet you and have a chat.
The Museum will close after hours on Tuesday 20th December and will reopen on 13th February 2023 for mornings only, Monday - Friday 10am to 1pm.
Remember Admission is Free.
All of us at the Museum wish you a Happy New Year .

The local fundraising group in Braunton are very proud of their achievements throughout 2022 and we look ahead to a new year with enthusiasm and positivity.
The year started with a certain amount of uncertainty, both nationally and locally, the pandemic had left us with a feeling of hesitation. However we decided toplanaheadandgetgoingonthefundraisingtrailonceagain.
In March we held our first coffee morning when we welcomed back old friends.
April saw us collecting at the Braunton Tesco store and we would like to express our appreciation to them for their support.
In June we attended the Village Fair where we had a very successful tombola stall, another coffee morning followed in September and a collection at St Johns Garden Centre at Ashford in November.
The Christmas coffee morning was a huge success raising in excess of £800, the mince pies were greatly appreciated and our thanks go to a local company who donated them. The year ended with our chocolate tombola stall at the Braunton Christmas Market, this generated £390.
Apart from money raised by us there have been several events organised by individuals and the proceeds donated to Cancer Research. This is much appreciated.
The total figure that we have been able to forward to Cancer Research UK for 2022 stands at £14,103.73.
This money has been made by you, by your generosity, no matter in what way a collection goblet in a shop or at home to drop in your small change, a direct debit to Cancer Research or a collection via your Funeral Director when a loved one has passed away. This year we have received £9473.57 from local Funeral Directors. Some simple ways to ensure that cancer research never ends. The need is as great as ever, we have all been made aware of the impact cancer can have on our lives, some powerful stories have been on our TV screens, particularly in bowel cancer and brain tumours in children.
We need you to continue to give us your support in our endeavours to ensure that research can go on moving forward and save more lives. Thank you so much. We wish you all a Happy New Year and look forward to meeting you again in 2023 .

We take this opportunity to remind motorists to ‘think safety’ before setting out on the roads during the winter months particularly when there has been a sudden drop in temperature.
Beware of icy conditions especially during early mornings. Consider leaving a little more time for travelling so you can take extra care. Rushing your journey can lead to errors of judgement which can easily lead to a serious crash.
As well as motorists taking responsibility for their driving, police also urge them to check the condition of their vehicle. Basic checks are necessary on things such as tyres, wipers, and lights.
Before setting off, drivers should also make sure the windscreen is fully cleared and headlights are on if required.
The five main causes of serious injuries and deaths on the region’s roads, known as the ‘fatal five’, are excessive or inappropriate speed, driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, not wearing a seat belt, driver distractions such as using mobile devices & careless and inconsiderate driving.
On top of the “Fatal five” at this time of year we also have the weather to consider.
Please drive carefully and according to the road conditions and arrive at your destination safely.

Paisley is a one-year-old Trailhound cross. If outdoor adventures are your thing, then Paisley could be the pooch for you. He loves to head out in the car he will happily walk for miles taking in all the smells that the countryside has to offer. Paisley is not a dog for busy environments and would not enjoy trips to pubs, cafes or restaurants.
Paisley would like to be the only dog in his new home, but he is social with other dogs when out and about. His play style off-lead is on the boisterous side so his playmates would have to be a suitable match. Like any hound, he has an interesting howl and he uses it when he is excited. You can often hear this happy fella on a walk around the rehoming centre woodland with his carers.
When it comes to meeting new people Paisley can easily become worried, and until he knows someone well, he is overwhelmed by too much fuss. Once Paisley trusts you, his affectionate side shines and he will come and sit with you for snuggles. He has loads of potential to be a super companion.
Paisley will need any potential adopters to come to the centre to visit him a few times so you can get to know each other. He is looking for an adult home. He worries when he is left alone so is therefore looking for a home where his humans are around as much as possible. Time left alone will need to be built up gradually. He is looking for a quiet home environment, and he could cope with reasonably busy walks.
If you think you could give Paisley the loving home that he deserves please take a look at his profile on Dogs Trust’s website www.dogstrust.org.uk/rehoming
