Braunton Travis Perkins is open from 7.30am to 5.00pm Monday to Friday & 8.00am to 12.00pm on Saturdays for collections & deliveries THE BRAUNTON MUSEUM AND INFORMATION 2021 has been a challenging year for everyone, not least the museum. Covid 19 has impacted us all in different ways, however we were delighted to be able to open up during the year and once more welcome all the visitors to this lovely part of North Devon, many of whom had never been this way in the past. As usual we were able to send them on their way with maps and brochures and a smile on their faces. During the lockdown we took the opportunity to do some essential repairs and improvements to the building, in particular removing an interior wall which has improved visibility both into, and out of, the museum. Alterations to the administration area and new carpets throughout have brought things up to date. We have all been aware of the safety required for all our staff, and with the screens provided we feel we have acted in a fitting way for their personal protection. Fundraising has been minimal, and the loss of the Charity Christmas Cards has been notable. Thank you to all who came in to purchase them, we hope we shall have a range next year. Our recent Coffee Morning raised £182, it was lovely to see everyone again, thank you for your support. So, 2022 beckons, we hope to have a new exhibition in place covering the Bulb Farm which was so important to the village between the war years. We reopen on Monday 17th January, from 10am to 1pm. We shall open mornings only until the February half term. Admission to the museum is free and we look forward to meeting our local residents and visitors once again .School parties are most welcome, the children full of curiosity and questions. You can contact us on 01271 816688 for more information. THE BRAUNTON FUNDRAISING GROUP FOR CANCER RESEARCH UK The Braunton Fundraising Group for Cancer Research UK has remained active throughout the turbulent times and restrictions which Covid 19 has thrown at us. The past 20 months have been difficult for all charities, particularly those who rely on fundraising for their existence. However we here in Braunton are fortunate to have such a generous community and on our behalf I would like to thank each and everyone of you for your continued support .

We began 2021 wondering what we could do to keep the profile of Cancer Research fresh in the mind of all of us, we know the reason why we do this, and how important it is that the scientists and doctors who do research get all the funding that they need to continue their great work. A reminder that this is not funded by the NHS but by people throughout the world giving what they can. Our activities have been restricted, but nevertheless we have raised in excess of £5000 this year and received a considerable amount from local funeral directors and from legacies, this is so much appreciated. Our big money spinners have been the three Grand Draws, last year at this time it was held in a garage! This was followed by the Easter Draw and recently the Christmas one at our Coffee Morning. On all three occasions we generated in excess of £1000, so well done to all those who sold tickets and the lucky winners. Much to our surprise in September , we were nominated by NDVS Volunteer Awards 2021, for our Commitment and Contribution as Volunteers Raising Funds for Cancer Research UK also The Flame of Hope Awards recognising our Outstanding Contribution to Cancer Research UK. We are very proud to have been recognised in this way, but of course this is only half the story, without all of you, this could not happen. As we approach 2022 we have plans in place to bring back some of our most popular events, such as quiz nights, fashion show, cream teas and coffee mornings. Also it is a notable year for Cancer Research UK as it becomes 20 years old on 21st February. This was when it changed the name to what we recognise today. Naturally there is expected to be a Birthday Celebration ...maybe a "Pink Party"... Remember those?...and that is something we hope you will all support. More information about that as plans are finalised. Finally, as we welcome a new year and begin to get our lives back, let us remember all those who are struggling with cancer, and the people who care for them. The need for early diagnosis is paramount, the clinical trials that will bring longer life expectancy need the resources we are able to support by our fundraising. Let us continue to believe that Together We Can Beat Cancer, and look ahead with positivity.

A Happy Healthy New Year to you all.

North Devon and Torridge Housing Crisis group are working tirelessly to support, signpost and share knowledge with those facing housing uncertainty. At the same time, the volunteers behind this group are making great steps to bring about changes to local , and hopefully central government policies, in an attempt to alleviate the housing problems being faced by many in the area. This is not a page just for those facing homelessness, it is about a community working together, for the benefit of all. As this last year has highlighted, the lack of housing is impacting many businesses and services from local manufacturers and the hospitality sector to the NHS and education providers. According to the Office of National Statistics 'the average cost of rent in the south-west of England rose by 2.6% in the year leading to August (2021), more than double the 1.2% increase for the UK as a whole'. We also know that the possibility of buying a home is out of reach of so many in North Devon with house prices rising by 22.5% compared with the 8% national average rise. The current situation for people facing eviction or housing uncertainty can really affect mental well-being. For anyone struggling with mental illness please find the courage to talk to someone. Your GP is a good starting point but here are a list of local and national organisations that are there to listen. Please don't struggle alone. You can ring the same number for environmental health to speak to someone about your housing conditions (or once again go on line). Over the last 18 months there are likely to be more families impacted financially and emotionally by the pandemic and unfortunately, illegal money lenders will look to take advantage of people when cash is tight and mislead them into thinking it is the only solution.

People are being advised to watch out for warning signs of loan sharks and report them if they are approached by one. Loan sharks rarely give paperwork, exorbitant extra amounts and interest payments are usually added at random and items including passports, bank cards and driving licences are taken as security on the loans. As the debts often cannot legally be enforced in many cases the loan sharks will resort to threats, violence, and other bully tactics to extort money from people. Protect yourself and your loved ones from loan sharks.

•

• •

If you need to borrow money, check the lender is reputable and find out what interest and fees they charge. You can find out whether a money lender is authorised by checking the register on the FCA website at https://crowd.in/IRmR0v Be wary of people you don’t know sending you messages through your social media accounts. Loan sharks might offer you a quick deal, but they will soon trap you in a spiral of debt with extortionate rates of interest. Never send money or give credit card, online account details or copies of personal documents to anyone you don’t know or trust. Be careful about how much personal information you share on social network sites. Loan sharks have been known to use online platforms to find, threaten and control people in debt.

Anyone with concerns about illegal money lending can contact the Stop Loan Sharks 24/7 Helpline in confidence on 0300 555 2222. You can also find additional information and support online at https://crowd.in/MltK0S. Live Chat is available on the website 9am to 5pm, Monday to Friday (excluding bank holidays).

Harry provides the kind of service that seems to be lacking from some other tradesmen here in North Devon. He did a great job redecorating my dining room . He arrived on the pre organised date without reorganising it several times and then promptly each morning . Got on with the job in hand, worked hard and paid attention to the little details . He cleaned up after himself and the final bill was very close to the original quote. There was a small problem with the finish on one of the walls which he pointed out to me then rectified it at no extra cost for the labour. All in all he was honest, trustworthy, hard working and capable. The end result is great and I'll certainly use him again. Very pleased with my recently painted bathroom & toilet....Harry was on time, not constantly stopping for breaks, precise & affordable. A nice friendly man. Now to save for the next room!

BRAUNTON PARISH COUNCIL

THE BRAUNTON EXPRESS January 2022

Crossing Upgrade on Chaloners Road Devon County Council have upgraded the controlled crossing facility on the A361 Chaloners Road from a Zebra crossing to a Puffin signalised controlled crossing. The scheme aims to support safer routes to school and to support active travel improvements in the village as part of the Braunton Air Quality Action Plan.

Puffin crossing A Puffin crossing is almost like a Pelican crossing, but a little bit more intelligent. Puffin crossings have sensors which detect the presence of a pedestrian. Puffin crossing signals for pedestrians are mounted on the near road side (Unlike the older pelican crossing where signal lights for pedestrians are on the opposite side of the road). 32

Puffin crossings have features that assists visually impaired people. Late studies shows that puffins are safer than pelican crossings. Braunton Parish Council and Caen Primary have welcomed the upgrade and hope that the new crossing will make it safer for parents to walk their children to school.

Working with the Parish Council, Braunton Caen Rotary Club will be planting saplings as part of the Queen’s Green Canopy following a successful application by Braunton Caen Rotary Club to the Woodland Trust. The Queen’s Green Canopy (QGC) is a unique tree planting initiative created to mark Her Majesty’s Platinum Jubilee in 2022 which invites people from across the United Kingdom to “Plant a Tree for the Jubilee”.

The trees will become trees for life for the Year 11 students at Braunton Academy who are also involved with the community project. Braunton Countryside Centre are helping to develop plans for planting, maintenance and after care alongside the Parish Council grounds team. Cllr Liz Spear, Chair of Braunton Parish Council said “It is great to see the community coming together for this sustainable initiative and we will be offering an area of the Tarka Trail between the Anchor and Georgeham Cross for tree planting in the spring of 2022.” Cllr Derrick Spear, Chair of the Parks and Gardens Committee added “Enhancing this area as a sustainable trail will make it a place for everyone in the community to enjoy as well as enhancing habitats for wildlife. It will be a great legacy in honour of the Queen”

Whether you’re adding new or maintaining existing:

Rudi is a six-year-old Crossbreed who is looking for a special forever home. He has a sweet, loving nature that you cannot help but fall in love with. Rudi is super affectionate and loves fuss and snuggles on a regular basis with his favourite carers. He enjoys playing with toys especially the soft squeaky ones. Rudi loves trips in the car before heading off for a walk in a nice quiet location. Rudi is working on his lack of confidence with other dogs by walking alongside calm dogs who are happy to ignore him and not want any interaction; he is doing very well, and he benefits from having a consistent friend that he can walk alongside. Rudi has been trained to wear a muzzle when out on his walks. He is super-comfortable wearing his muzzle, as the positive, reward-based approach we have taken with this training means he sees this as no different from having his harness and lead put on.

Rudi enjoys showing off his many tricks for nice, tasty treats, either practice what he knows or teach him something new as he thrives when being trained! He is a sensitive boy who requires lots of love, praise, and reassurance. Rudi is looking for patient and understanding adopters who live in a rural area. He could share his home with older teens and he will need to be the only pet in the home. A nice big garden is a must, and he’d love someone around for most of the day whilst he settles in. If you think you could give Rudi the forever home he is looking for, please go to www.dogstrust.org.uk/ rehoming to start the virtual adoption process. Dogs Trust Ilfracombe holds Information Days every Sunday. If you would like to take a tour of the centre, meet members of the team and see the dogs spending time with their canine carers, please go to www.dogstrust.org.uk/ourcentres to book a place.

NEW RESEARCH SHOWS SCALE OF ABUSE AGAINST ANIMALS IN DOMESTIC ABUSE CASES In this research, 88%1 of households involved in domestic abuse, animals were also abused by the perpetrator In over 1 in 10 (12%)2 of households researched, animals were brutally killed by perpetrators to punish, frighten and entrap Where a pet was given as a ‘gift’, abuse against the animal occurred in 94%3 of these households Refuge4Pets, a domestic abuse charity based in Devon & Cornwall, urges more foster carers to sign up to help people and their pets fleeing domestic abuse 16 days of action against gender-based violence begins tomorrow (25th November)6 Almost nine in 101 households who experienced domestic abuse have said that animals were also abused by the perpetrators, according to shocking new research carried out by Refuge4Pets, a pet fostering service across Devon and Cornwall for victims/survivors of domestic abuse.

The research surveyed 107 victim-survivors of domestic abuse and interviewed victim-survivors across the country, to better understand the link between domestic abuse and animal abuse. Worryingly, the research – carried out by Dr Mary Wakeham, who founded Refuge4Pets - showed that in one in ten (12%)2 of households where domestic abuse was present, the animal - and often multiple animals - had been killed. Furthermore, in 94%3 of households where an animal was given as a ‘gift’, the animals were then abused and, in some cases, killed by the perpetrator - demonstrating that pets are used as tools by perpetrators of domestic abuse to control and coerce. In addition to the physical abuse that pets may suffer, Dogs Trust - who run the Freedom Project which offers vital support for dog owners escaping from domestic abuse - found that 97%4 of professionals - working in the domestic abuse sector also said that animals are often used as a means of controlling someone experiencing domestic abuse. Refuge4Pets provides foster homes for pets across Devon and Cornwall enabling survivors to access safe accommodation without the fear of what may happen to their pet if left behind. As many refuges are unable to accept pets, this important service gives survivors the opportunity to escape abuse, safe in the knowledge that their pets will also be safe and well cared for. Since its inception in August 2017, the charity has enabled 213 individuals/families to escape domestic abuse by fostering 372 animals – predominantly cats and dogs but horses, snakes, rabbits, cats, birds and more have been supported by the vital service. The charity, which runs across Cornwall and Devon has almost 150 volunteer foster carers who make this service to victim-survivors possible by providing amazing temporary foster homes. Dr Mary Wakeham who runs Refuge4Pets said: “Since the start of the pandemic we have seen a real increase in the severity of abuse that families have been subjected to by the perpetrator, and we are dealing with situations where we need to act quickly to get animals to safety.

“The pandemic and housing crisis in the South West is making it even more difficult for victim-survivors to find safe accommodation where they can be reunited with their much-loved animals. This means that animals are staying in foster care for longer. “We foster all animals from hamsters to horses, but we need more donations and volunteer foster carers to keep on running.” Ann, a victim/survivor of domestic abuse spoke of her experience5: “I had three very big fish tanks with some fish in that I had nurtured since they were tiny little fish. My perpetrator used to threaten them, he used to throw things in there and pull the fish out. “I can’t even remember what it was, it was something so stupid, it was like I had got home late and the dinner wasn’t ready, and he took the bleach and poured it into the water. I just had to sit there and basically watch them die, because that was what happened, it was awful.” Refuge4Pets are seeking more volunteer foster carers and donations to continue running their lifesaving service. If you or someone you know needs help, please email info@refuge4pets.org.uk or call 0300 4000 121.
