The Herbert Protocol Devon & Cornwall police are attending an increasing number of logs where people with Dementia have been reported as missing. The Herbert Protocol encourages family/carers to collate information on those who are vulnerable onto a form that can be given to the police, if they go missing. Carers, family members and friends can complete in advance, a form recording all vital details, such as:

• • •

medication required, mobile numbers, places previously located, a photograph

In the event of your family member or friend going missing, the form can be easily handed to the police to reduce the time taken in gathering this information. The Herbert Protocol initiative is named after George Herbert, a War veteran of the Normandy landings, who lived with dementia. Who decides who is at risk? If you think that your family member or friend is at risk of leaving their home and going missing or already has a history of this, please fill in the form as soon as possible. If you are a carer the judgement should be based on your professional opinion. Who completes the form? The form can be completed by a family member or, with the permission of the next of kin, friend or neighbour working together with the vulnerable person. If the person is in a care setting, or the person filling in the form is a home carer or a representative of a partner agency, take advice from your management on your organisation's protocols. The form should be completed and regularly updated, so that all the information is as relevant as possible. When should the form be sent to the police? The police only need the form at the point the person is reported missing. There is no need to hand it to police before then and the form will be returned once the person is found. Where should the form be stored? It should be stored in an easily accessible place in the person's home but kept out of sight of visitors as the information is confidential. In the care setting it should be stored in accordance with data protection laws, but where you can find it quickly. Go to www.devon-cornwall.police.uk/missingherbert for more information and to download the form.

Trees and Recreation Ground Improvements W e have managed to hang on to many of our Ash trees until now but sadly, our recent tree report highlighted a number of trees that needed to be removed, including Ash which had suffered from Ash Dieback. W e are planting replacement trees around the village and have recently planted some in the recreation ground as part of our improvement works. One of these is a Japanese Cherry (Prunus Shimidsu Sakura) which should grow to something similar to the picture. This tree replaces the raised bed which had sadly rotted. Thank you to everyone who responded to our recreation equipment questionnaire. W e shall be announcing our proposal and working on the phase 2 improvements later in the year.

Handsome Bean seeking new home for the New year Bean is a handsome eight-year-old Rhodesian Ridgeback who is looking for a home at Dogs Trust Ilfracombe Rehoming Centre. Big-boy-Bean dotes on human company. He loves to hang out with you and be involved in whatever you are doing. He enjoys a fuss and affection and is always excited to see you. Once Bean is in the car he travels well. He enjoys his walks and despite his size he plods along gently on his lead for much of the time. Bean is happy to make friends with quiet and calm dogs and does not mind then joining him on walks. Bean enjoys a paddle in water whether it be a stream or in the sea. He also likes a good sniff of his surroundings. Bean sometimes enjoys playing with toys, his favourites are the soft squeaky variety. He does have a big, loud bark that may make you jump if you’re not expecting to hear it! His big love is food, he loves his treats. Bean knows a few tricks, including a ‘sit’, ‘wait’, and ‘paw’ he is currently working on a ‘leave’. Bean is looking for a loving home with adult adopters. He would like to be the only pet in the home and would benefit from having social doggy friends when out and about. He is friendly and excited with visitors to the home. He would best suit a quieter home environment and would like his humans to be with him for much of the time. Bean is already housetrained. If you think you could give Bean the loving home that he deserves please take a look at his profile on Dogs Trust’s website www.dogstrust.org.uk/rehoming to begin the virtual adoption process.

Cat of the Month - Molly Eight year old Molly with her Bengal colours and soft silky coat is a real beauty. Typically Bengal, she is clever, needs mental stimulation with cat toys, has a loud voice when she chooses to talk to you and does not like being held or restrained. She has had a very quiet life and the upheaval of losing her home has been very stressful for her, so she may take a while to get to know and trust a new family. When she does, and despite being a little shy and nervous, she will love a bit of fuss and do lots of face rubs to tell you she approves.

Est. 1977 - Family

Tel - 01271 882633 www.richardstelevision.co.uk

Molly is used to having someone around in the home, and although not a lap cat has been a good companion even if it's just sharing the same room or sitting on the back of the sofa with you. She will need access to a garden and although she has not had the use of a catflap has always been able to come and go when she pleases. A home without any other pets or children would be best and preferably not a high density cat area. Bengals are accepted to be just a bit different from most other cats, so an adopter with previous experience of the breed would be ideal, or at least a previous cat owner who is willing to learn their ways. Are you that person who can give Molly the home she deserves?
