February 2023

When responding to adverts please mention the ‘North Devon Insight’
We are now well and truly over Christmas and the shops are starting to get their Easter eggs in! Blimey, Easter isn’t until April and it’s started already.
Before that though we have Valentine’s Day on 14th February, Pancake Day (Shrove Tuesday) on 21st February and another half term holiday for the schools and colleges!
After the recent cold spell, I’m very much looking forward to the Spring and then the Summer this year, let’s hope the weather is good to us.
Have a fabulous February, enjoy yourself and keep warm!
Finally, if you would like to advertise your business to homes across Barnstaple and the surrounding areas each month, please get in touch.

The Barnstaple Repair Cafe will provide a welcoming space for people to bring various items for mending; an opportunity to come together as a community, learn new skills, save money and help save the planet - one punctured bike tyre or broken zipper at a time!
The Barnstaple Repair Cafe is a partnership project hosted by local environmental charity Plastic Free North Devon (PFND), who are members of the International Repair Cafe network. Stakeholders include: One Barnstaple, Barnstaple Town Council, North Devon Voluntary Service (NDVS), Barnstaple Link Rotary Club, Sunrise Diversity, Pickwell Foundation, Barnstaple Lions and other organisations from within the Barnstaple area with the support of volunteers from the local community.
The aim of a repair cafe is to reduce waste by helping people to repair items that may otherwise be thrown away, to support people during the cost of living crisis, and to create welcoming community hubs for all members of the community to benefit from.
The first Barnstaple Repair Cafe took place on Saturday 14th January at the St Johns Community Hall, (beside Tesco) Rose Lane, Barnstaple. The types of repairs taking place were: bikes, textiles and some basic jewellery repairs. The plan is to host the cafes bi-monthly in different venues with pop-up cafes being offered in warm spaces.
The Repair Cafe team are currently on the lookout for a few more volunteers, either to share their mending skills at the bi-monthly cafes or to help out behind the scenes and welcome people on the day. You don’t need to be a professional seamstress or upholsterer or mechanic to volunteer - just someone with some basic skills who is happy to share what they know, and there is no pressure to undertake any repairs that the volunteer is not confident with.
“We’re really excited to be starting up a Repair Cafe in Barnstaple following the successful launch of Ilfracombe’s Repair Cafe last month, ” says Cathy Karniewicz, PFND Repair Cafe Coordinator. “After the last two years we at Plastic Free are keen to assist and support our communities in a sustainable way whilst reducing our waste and avoiding slightly broken items being totally wasted when they have plenty of life left in them.
When responding to adverts please mention the ‘North Devon Insight’
This Repair Cafe will rely on volunteers to make this happen so we would love to hear from anyone who has any other skills to offer; mending a tear, showing how to fix a puncture but also greeting visitors and sign posting them to the volunteer repairer and if you can pour great cups of tea, fantastic!”
Mayor of Barnstaple, Cllr Louisa York said: “I am very proud of our town, and I am pleased to be working with so many partners on this exciting new project. It is really important that our community has the opportunity to be able to renovate items which would otherwise end up in landfill. I am giving the Barnstaple Repair Cafe my full support as Mayor and encourage anybody who has the necessary skills or free time to come along and get involved. Barnstaple Town Council is supporting the Repair Cafe at its St John’s Community Centre, which has free parking, is on a bus route and is fully accessible. Please follow our new Facebook Page ‘Barnstaple Repair Cafe’.”
Claire Moodie, CEO, PFND explains a little more about the community aspect of the events:
“The running of these cafes is driven by two fundamental things. Firstly, providing communities with the tools and skills to avoid the need to consume more things, ultimately reducing our collective impact on the planet; and secondly, a cross generational welcoming community space that allows people to share, learn, and consume tea and cake together. Running our Braunton Repair Cafe over the last year has been one of the most rewarding things we have done as a charity and we are really proud and excited to be expanding on this concept which we hope will continue to build resilient communities and action.’’
PFND are building on the success of their original Braunton and Landkey Repair Cafes, thanks to funding from the National Lottery Together For Our Planet Fund, and supporting North Devon towns and villages to get their own Repair Cafes up and running. The charity is keen to work with diverse community groups to create a truly inclusive and representative space.
Alongside the Barnstaple Repair Cafe, the Ilfracombe Repair Cafe will also be returning to the Earth Repair Shop and hand:plant on Sunday 22nd January 11am - 2pm.
If you are an individual or community group interested in setting up or becoming involved with a Repair Cafe in your own town or village, or becoming a volunteer at one already set up please contact PFND’s Repair Cafe Coordinator Cathy Karniewicz on cathy@plasticfreenorthdevon.org.
