End Polio Now Come to Braunton Museum or Countryside Centre, both in the Car Park in the Centre of Braunton. Collect a card showing the 5 historic chapels and a self-guided Walk sheet with points of interest along your route: some points you may know but others may be new to you. Or download a walk onto your phone at www.brauntoncaenrotary.co.uk. At each Chapel you will find a box of tokens. Collect one token and return to the Museum or Countryside Centre to have your card stamped to say that you have completed that walk. All the walks are easy and will take 40 minutes or so plus return. The walk to St. Anne’s Saunton starts from Braunton Burrows Sandy Lane Car Park and takes about an hour plus return. Why not take a flask and snack to eat in the grove there. Walk with your friends, take your family, grandchildren. On your return you could stop for a tea or coffee in one of our cafes. Please share these walks on your social media. Let us get everyone out walking to End Polio Now. Braunton Caen Rotary has always been involved in eradicating polio, whether travelling to India as volunteers to take part in children vaccination weeks or attending the House of Commons as part of a high-powered delegation raising awareness of its importance in Government. Endemic in many parts of the world in the 1970s, spearheaded by Rotary, there are now just a handful of cases in Afghanistan and Pakistan. Like smallpox it can be eradicated. Meanwhile we are all still worldwide vaccinated in childhood because it could easily flare up. Polio remains incurable and results in limb deformation, paralysis and sometimes death. Please support our vaccination campaign and the network of medical expertise created to eradicate polio but which also fights other diseases. Rotary is on the ground with local knowledge establishing trust in communities and helping international experts to put resources to greatest effect. Links for more information are on our website above. Thanks to an ongoing partnership, every £1 Donated to Rotary is matched with £2 from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. A £10 donation instantly turns into £30 to help end Polio forever. Thank you to our sponsors Brewer Harding & Rowe Solicitors, Braunton Museum and Countryside Centre, the Men’s Shed and the Chapel Owners.

Hello everyone. Well after 14 years of writing these Police articles for EX33 this will sadly be my last. After 20 years serving in the Police and 33 years in the Fire Service all based in Braunton it’s now time for me to retire and let the younger ones take over. With the development of the internet, we are seeing more elaborate ways of trying to scam people out of our hard earnt money. I make no apology for writing a lot of articles about scams because its important you are all aware of the latest ones are and more importantly you share the information with the more vulnerable members of our community, family members, friends, and work colleagues. My colleague PCSO Dale Kingdon will be writing the EX33 articles from next month’s edition, and I hope you enjoy reading them. Best Wishes Andy Frisby

SCAM CALL WARNING Your phone says it's your bank, HMRC, the NHS, the police, DVLA or your telecoms provider... but is it really? Criminals can now use phone number spoofing to make a call appear to come from a trusted organisation, even when it doesn't. The number displayed on your phone screen cannot always be trusted. The safest response is simple: HANG UP. LOOK UP. CALL BACK. If you receive an unexpected call, hang up politely and tell the caller you will contact the organisation yourself. Call back using a number you already know and trust such as the number on the back of your bank card, an official letter, bill, or the organisation's official website. Never use a number provided by the caller Never trust Caller ID alone. Be especially suspicious if you're asked to: transfer money to a "safe account" Never share passwords, PINs, security codes, download software, allow remote access to your computer or phone. Legitimate organisations will support your decision to verify who they are. Scammers will do all they can to keep you on the line and pressure you into acting quickly. Remember: STOP and think. HANG UP the call. VERIFY using a trusted number. PROTECT your personal and financial information. REPORT these suspicious calls and fraud attempts, initially to the genuine organisation. . If You Receive any Suspicious Message: Forward suspicious emails to report@phishing.gov.uk and then delete them. Forward suspicious text messages free of charge to 7726 (spells "SPAM" on your keypad) and then delete them.

Winter is Coming Writing this is always the highlight of my month – but for October, I have three things to cover. So I will be very brief #shoplocal. Writing at the beginning of the year it was exciting to report that Braunton had been recognised as the most successful “town centre” in Devon. A combination of the hard work and flexibility of our local independent traders. It has been a real blow to see some of our oldest retailers close forever while others have struggled. The long, dry, summer has provided some relief. But, as we head towards a wet winter, our incredible village will need all of us to remember to grab a brolly (or buy one from Slees) and make the most of this heart of our community. A big thank you to all of our local traders for what you’re doing. #vaccinated. As a free speech advocate, I’m very happy to have a choice in whether to be vaccinated or not. However, for me, the choice has always been to get the jab. While I am strong enough to cope with a respiratory illness, there are people I love who cannot manage. To me, vaccination is about ensuring that I reduce the risk of spreading a potentially fatal disease. In almost twenty winters of nursing I’ve seen how flu can rip through healthy as well as vulnerable people. I hope that once again, enough people who can vaccinate will help to protect our NHS as well as our community. More information can be found at https://www.royaldevon.nhs.uk/news/the-royaldevon-urging-people-to-get-their-jabdone-now-before-winter-illnesses-arrive/ #elections2027. When I took the role as County Councillor I decided it would be less ceremonial and more active. As a campaigner I have always wanted to drive change. In the next full council meeting I am looking forward to bringing three motions, including improvements to electoral representation for people in Devon’s nursing homes, and also to limit the use of AI in council communications. However, having spoken with my family over the summer it is clear that the pressures of the role are keeping me from being the dad that I need to be to my own family. I gave my children the democratic choice of whether I should continue for another two years, and the vote was unanimous in favour of finishing. Having spent the last year working hard to safeguard services and also the community purse I do not want to trigger the cost and circus of a by-election so will continue doing all I can until May 2027 but feel that will be a good time to step down as County Councillor. In the face of ever rising bills, giving up £1,500 per month is not an easy decision, but it is a small cost to pay when compared to being there for my family. In the run-up to 2027 I am looking forward to distributing another 5,000 calendars across Braunton Rural. Hope you enjoy it, this year it has been crammed even more essential local numbers and information.

Cllr Graham M Bell (rn) Devon County Councillor: Braunton Rural North Devon District Council: Lead Councillor for Housing & Homelessness, District & Parish Councillor for Braunton East Please note, as an RN, I frequently work nights and unusual shift patterns, therefore it might not be possible to respond to queries immediately. If a matter requires an urgent response, please call, message or WhatsApp on 07929159996.

Dog of the Month - Wiley

Wiley is an eight-year-old Staffordshire Bull Terrier from Dogs Trust Ilfracombe Rehoming Centre looking for a fun and loving home. Wiley’s favourite thing to do is play with his toys. He loves a ball and he enjoys having a game of fetch with anyone willing to throw it for him. When he is not playing and it’s time to relax, he adores a fuss, snuggles, and belly rubs with his favourite people. Be prepared for him to be your shadow, as he’s a loving companion who builds strong bonds with his people Wiley is a ‘man of routine’ and he thrives when he knows what to expect. He likes the same walking routes at the same times and one of his quirks is that after he finishes a meal, he likes a little walk. He enjoys woodlands and fields in locations not too busy with other dogs. Wiley is happy to ignore other dogs and just walk on past them, but he dislikes them running up to him and has learnt to wear a muzzle when out and about, so you have that peace of mind. When it’s warm, Wiley likes to take a dip in water, lie frog-legged and cool his belly down. He loves his food and treats, chews, and a Kong toy. Wiley is looking for a loving home. He could live with secondary school aged children, however, he will need to be the only pet in the home. He is housetrained and even though he adores company he is happy to be left alone for a few hours at a time. Wiley may take a little while to find his paws in a new home but once he settles, he’s chilled-out and adores home-comforts like snoozing on a comfy bed or napping on the sofa. Visits to Dogs Trust Ilfracombe are by appointment only. If you would like to apply to adopt a dog, please fill in the online application form and, if a match is found, the charity will arrange an appointment for you to meet them.
