At Christ Church Braunton we are doing a series of coffee mornings as we are going to launch the showing of our knitted Christmas tree. Everyone from the community has been involved in knitting green squares to make up the tree. Afterwards the squares are being stitched together to make blankets to be distributed. The coffee mornings are on the 20th and 27th of December, and 6th January - the proceeds are being shared between Childrens’ Hospice, the Wave Project, Penguin Sports Foundation , The Children’s Society and Ask for Jake. We would like to wish all EX33 readers a very Happy New Year. It’s that time of year for new year resolutions so have you thought about doing something new for 2026 and volunteer for a role that benefits the community of Braunton. if that’s a yes how about joining our Community Speed Watch team. One of the most common subjects bought up when we speak to the public is speeding vehicles. We have a community speed watch team in Braunton that has grown successfully over the years to include a team at Knowle. Both teams of volunteers work closely together with the sole aim of helping to make the roads in our area safer. The teams are Police approved and trained and they monitor sites that have been identified as having a speeding issue, which are then risk assessed by us. Our colleagues in the roads policing team will often go out and support the teams sessions and deal with the more serious offenders at the road side. The CSW teams normally go out a couple of times a week for an hour or two at a time and can use any of the different Police approved sites of which there are about a dozen. Are you interested in giving a few hours a month to make a difference to your community? This is a voluntary role where you are trained and supported by the Police but act independently as a team to make their own arrangements to go out and hold a session at anytime during the hours of daylight and for as long and often as you want. The sessions are normally held by teams of 3, so the more volunteers we have, the more sessions we can hold. The teams use a speed gun to monitor the vehicles speeds at the various sites so if a driver is found to be breaking the speed limit the vehicle details are recorded. Data sheets are sent to us, and warning letters are then sent to the vehicles registered keepers. Persistent offenders will be identified, and their details passed to our roads policing team to take more positive action. “It’s not like when I was a lad” is it? As a child I would regularly write to my MP, Roger Gale, and occasionally I’d get a beautifully handwritten note in response. Now, young people in Devon have their own council. I’ve been lucky to have a few meetings with the young people serving on the Devon Youth Council, and discussing their “Places to Go, Things to Do Youth Fund” that they created. I recently had the chance to speak on this on The Voice, it’s an incredible fund that provides small grants to young people and youth-led groups so they can set up activities, projects and opportunities across Devon. These young voices bring honesty, clarity and determination to the table. I very much hope that we will see many of these teenagers considering standing as part of the new Devon Unitary councils and committees so that they can bring their approach to our local politics. What stands out is not just what they say, but how they say it: confidently, constructively, and with a deep belief that their voices should shape the decisions being made about their futures. They remind us that local government must never be something that happens to young people, young people must be properly represented in local decision-making … so I remind them, and every parent of an idealistic teen, you can join your local councils from the age of 18! After all, if the voices of the young aren’t at the table when decisions are made about where homes are built, where transport links are improved, or what facilities are developed, we miss vital insight. As councillors, we must do everything we can to welcome and encourage young candidates, dismantle barriers to participation, and create a culture where younger voices are genuinely influential. This connects directly to the conversations I hear every week in Braunton, the surrounding villages and across northern Devon. One of the greatest challenges facing our young people is the simple, painful truth that many multigenerational families are being forced out of the village through a lack of local housing. Housing (as I imagine most people know) is my one biggest passion as a councillor. However, despite all we are doing; homelessness and housing insecurity remains a constant blight. I want to be absolutely clear: no family should ever be forced out of the community they call home. No young person should feel that the only path to adulthood involves leaving behind their support networks, friends, schools and the people who shaped them. Our villages thrive when generations remain connected, when young adults can build their lives nearby, and when local employers can recruit local talent. It’s time to realise that the most important part of our west country heritage is the Multi-generational family. People who are young-in-body and those who still feel young-at-heart working together in our councils to shape a future that includes us all.

Devon residents invited to have their say on future of libraries We’re asking residents to help shape the future of the county’s 50 libraries, as we launch a major 12-week public consultation today (Monday). From Monday 1 December people across Devon will be able to give their views on proposals to reduce and ‘standardise’ opening hours and options to extend opening hours through additional volunteering by using technology and the potential introduction of community managed libraries. Our consultation will also include a dedicated survey for children (13 and over) – there are currently more than 113,000 active registered library users in Devon and 28 per cent of those are children, the single largest group. No libraries will close under the proposals. We currently have 50 libraries, run by the charity Libraries Unlimited, alongside a Home Library Service and outreach programmes. Together, they welcomed 2.6 million visits last year and hosted more than 14,000 events, ranging from children’s story sessions to digital skills workshops. Our consultation comes as we face mounting financial pressures which means that we must now look at how services are delivered. The library service budget has been reduced year on year, and whilst efficiency savings have been made the current model is no longer sustainable. And although digital borrowing of e-books, audiobooks and e-magazines has grown, physical book borrowing is below pre-pandemic levels. Residents will be able to view the proposals for their local library and will be asked whether they support plans for ‘standardised’ staffed hours. Currently each of libraries has its own individual opening hours – under the proposals we are looking to group a number of libraries together within an area, and each area will have at least one library open Monday to Saturday. We are also seeking views on the use of volunteers and community managed libraries, where local organisations could take on day-to-day running with support from the authority and Libraries Unlimited. This happens in Cornwall where four out of the county’s libraries are maintained by the council, with 27 run by local community groups, town and parish councils. Other proposals include the use of new technology such as ‘Open Access’ systems which would allow registered users to enter libraries outside staffed times. The consultation runs until Sunday February 22 2026. Forms can be completed online, at local libraries, or returned by post.

THE BRAUNTON EXPRESS Council Reconsiders Allowing Dogs on Recreation Ground Braunton Parish Council have listened to the public and agreed to postpone, for a period of six months, its decision to ban dogs on the Recreation Ground. This will give the public an opportunity to follow the rule that dogs must be kept on a lead and to a footpath. During the six month period, the Council will improve

signage on all access gates making it clear to all users of the Recreation Ground that dogs must be kept on a lead and to a footpath. The Council understands that most dog owners are responsible and do pick up their dog’s mess. Unfortunately, on some occasions dog mess has been left on the Recreation Ground and not picked up and

responsibly disposed of by dog owners. This is unacceptable as the Recreation Ground is used by many in the community for recreation and sports. Also, it is unfair for the Council’s grounds staff who maintain the recreation ground to a high standard to be covered in dog mess whilst carrying out their duties. The Council will draw focus to the misuse of the Recreation Ground by issuing a social media campaign ‘spray, record, pick up & post’. In addition to this, the Council will monitor the situation and regularly post on social media the number of dog owners who do not stick to the rules and

allow their dog off of a lead whilst using the Recreation Ground. The Council will be considering installing additional bins to make it easier to responsibly dispose of your dog’s waste. We will continue to engage with all users of the Recreation Ground regarding allowing dogs to continue to walk through and allowing dogs at community events held on the Recreation Ground. We ask for the public to support us by sticking to the rules to ensure everyone’s continued enjoyment and safety when using the Recreation Ground.

Dogs Trust Ilfracombe - Dog of the Month Ruby the Lurcher

Ruby is a six-year-old Lurcher looking for a loving home. She is from Dogs Trust Ilfracombe, and is currently living off-site in a foster home.

Ruby is a happy, bouncy and fun-loving girl. She loves to play with her toys and, enjoys nothing more than a big run around in her garden. Her favourite things to do include going for long walks where she can explore with her nose, particularly when she can socialise with other doggy friends. In the evenings, you’ll find snuggled on the sofa with her foster careers. She is an affectionate girl who adores a fuss. She knows commands such as sit and paw, and she is well housetrained. Ruby’s foster carers are helping her gain confidence when it comes to travelling in the car, with lots of positive experiences and going to fun locations. Ruby could share her home with dog-savvy teenage children, and potentially another like-minded dog, following a successful meet at the rehoming centre. However, she’s not suitable for adopters who already have other pets like cats or livestock. She can initially be shy around new people, so would best suit a quieter home environment without too many visitors while she settles and finds her paws. Visits to Dogs Trust Ilfracombe are now by appointment only.
