This is my absolute favourite time of the year, I can’t wait for Christmas to come round with the Carol services, Christmas parties, celebrations with the family and of course ….. mince pies and drink! We have some great features for you this month including the all important Christmas posting dates (please double check these dates due to any strike action), Santa Sleigh dates and routes, and loads of festive events going on. FEATURE The Barnstaple branch of Samaritans are having a recruitment push over the coming months. They have three branch training courses each year, of which they are currently in the middle of one at the moment, and their next begins on Thursday 11th January. The Samaritans are looking for people with certain qualities: You must be empathetic, able to listen to others, be non-judgemental, and able to talk to a caller without giving advice. You must also be people who really care about others and want to help them. Given those qualities they can then give intensive training to build on them, and enable people to become good listening volunteers. The Samaritans vision is that fewer people die by suicide. But calls to them are not, by any means, always about suicide. People ring them with, what to them, may sound a trivial problem, but for them, it could be the final straw, and they are very pressured by it. The Samaritans job is to listen to them, and ask the right questions to help them make up their own mind about what to do next. It is not their place to advise or tell them what to do. They need to be empowered by making their own decisions. The training takes place over seven consecutive Thursdays starting at 6.30pm. The first session is a face to face informal one, to meet the trainers and other trainees. After that the Core Development programme is held on Zoom. At the end of those seven weeks, each trainee is allocated a mentor, who will work six to eight shifts with them, and give them support while they handle their first calls. In the first six months there will be five more training sessions to reinforce the first ones and to build on the learning as a new Samaritan. Those will also be held on Zoom. In order to complete the training, it is compulsory to attend every session and complete a certain number of shifts, including some early morning or late night ones. When a trainee completes that six months probationary period satisfactorily, they then become a Full Samaritan. An applicant will need to have a selection interview, again on Zoom, which would last about an hour and a quarter.
They are ALL volunteers. There is not one paid member of the branch, and although they do a serious job as listening volunteers, they are a warm, friendly group and they have fun social events such as quiz nights. One volunteer who joined about a year ago said recently that their weekly shift has now become the most important and most fulfilling three hours of their week. Being a volunteer can change other people’s lives but also change your own. The Bridge Trust is one of Barnstaple’s oldest institutions having been part of the fabric of the town for over 700 years. It has a venerable past and an exciting future thanks to a large grant from the Cultural Development Fund, a government fund administered by Arts Council England. The fund will help with redevelopment of the Strand end of the building. The Trust is currently recruiting extra trustees to share in shaping that future. As the name suggests, the Bridge Trust was originally established to oversee the upkeep of the Long Bridge over the river Taw, which it did for 640 years. During that time, surplus income was invested in property and the trust become a substantial landlord. Profits from letting the properties were distributed to a range of local charitable causes. In 1961, responsibility for the Long Bridge was taken over by the Ministry of Transport. The Bridge Trust was registered with the Charity Commission and continued to make grants to local organisations, funded by income from the remaining properties that the Trust owned and managed. Perhaps the two most eye-catching buildings the Trust still owns are Bridge Chambers and Bridge Buildings. Bridge Chambers is the large brick building at the top of The Strand, the other side of the bridge from the museum. You may be aware of the SOL bookshop on the corner. SOL is an English Language school, and the foreign students are currently taught in another part of the building. There are a large number of office spaces – some of which are currently vacant – and a magnificent hall that was once Barnstaple’s Magistrates Court, but which has fallen into a state of disrepair, and hence the redevelopment program.
Bridge Buildings is the handsome white edifice that occupies the north-west side of The Square. Lilico’s 1844 occupies the corner of the building and there are residential flats on the upper floors and other businesses at ground level. The Trust owns a further mix of residential and commercial properties on the High Street and Boutport Street. The grant from the Cultural Development Fund is focussed on opening up part of Bridge Chambers for year-round community use. In particular, a major refurbishment of the Bridge Trust Hall so that it can serve as a versatile performance space. There are also plans for exhibition space underneath the hall. This is all part of a larger plan to develop Barnstaple’s cultural and leisure facilities in the town centre, which North Devon Council is overseeing.

Details and a form for this can be found at https://operationsnap.devoncornwall.police.uk/ This means that you are not able to enter the new housing estates or the crematorium via Old Torrington Road by vehicle any longer and to access these places and businesses by Sainsburys, you must drive to Roundswell and drive down Gratton Way past Sainsburys to the end of the road. You then turn left or right to your destination.
