The Barnstaple branch of Samaritans are having a recruitment push over the coming months. They have three branch training courses each year, of which they are currently in the middle of one at the moment, and their next begins on Thursday 11th January. The Samaritans are looking for people with certain qualities: You must be empathetic, able to listen to others, be non-judgemental, and able to talk to a caller without giving advice. You must also be people who really care about others and want to help them. Given those qualities they can then give intensive training to build on them, and enable people to become good listening volunteers.
The Samaritans vision is that fewer people die by suicide. But calls to them are not, by any means, always about suicide. People ring them with, what to them, may sound a trivial problem, but for them, it could be the final straw, and they are very pressured by it. The Samaritans job is to listen to them, and ask the right questions to help them make up their own mind about what to do next. It is not their place to advise or tell them what to do. They need to be empowered by making their own decisions. The training takes place over seven consecutive Thursdays starting at 6.30pm. The first session is a face to face informal one, to meet the trainers and other trainees. After that the Core Development programme is held on Zoom. At the end of those seven weeks, each trainee is allocated a mentor, who will work six to eight shifts with them, and give them support while they handle their first calls. In the first six months there will be five more training sessions to reinforce the first ones and to build on the learning as a new Samaritan. Those will also be held on Zoom. In order to complete the training, it is compulsory to attend every session and complete a certain number of shifts, including some early morning or late night ones. When a trainee completes that six months probationary period satisfactorily, they then become a Full Samaritan. An applicant will need to have a selection interview, again on Zoom, which would last about an hour and a quarter. They are ALL volunteers. There is not one paid member of the branch, and although they do a serious job as listening volunteers, they are a warm, friendly group and they have fun social events such as quiz nights. One volunteer who joined about a year ago said recently that their weekly shift has now become the most important and most fulfilling three hours of their week. Being a volunteer can change other people’s lives but also change your own. If anyone is interested in joining them they could email Brian at samsselctionnd@outlook.com or google Barnstaple Samaritans and go to their 12 website. We take this opportunity to wish all EX33 readers and their families a very happy Christmas and safe New Year! Devon and Cornwall Police are urging Christmas shoppers to be on their guard for opportunist thieves preying on vehicles. As the festive period approaches, police are recommending that people take care by keeping car windows closed and doors locked and by keeping presents and valuables away from outside view. Theft from vehicles in Devon and Cornwall remains low but the opportunity for this type of crime traditionally rises during the lead up to Christmas. Shoppers should be aware and keep purchases with them rather than leave them on display in vehicles. This will reduce the opportunity for crime. By taking simple precautions people can help police to reduce crime while preventing the heartache of losing valuable or sentimental gifts over the festive season.” Police are asking shoppers to follow simple precautions when out and about during the festive season: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6.
Lock your vehicles and close windows. Park in a well-lit and recognised car park. Leave nothing on display in your vehicle. Plan shopping so that bulky items are collected at the end of the day rather than being stored in your vehicle. When you get home make a note of any serial numbers of valuable items on the guarantee slip. Register valuables using the free service at www.immobilise.com which enables police to identify the owner of the items if they are stolen

Christmas Report from Devon County Councillor I can’t believe that it’s almost Christmas and that another year has nearly gone. It’s been a busy one and I am also now a District Councillor which has added to the workload. Some of the highlights of the year have included: 1. 2. 3.
The installation of the Changing Places Facility in Croyde which was the result of 18 months of hard work by our Access for All group The appointment of a Mental Health Practitioner at Southmead School provided by a charity which I facilitated And we have finally managed to get the speed limit reduced to 50mph from Knowle which was especially important to residents at Heddon Mills.
Following a year long review of Pharmacy provision in Devon, which I requested because of the serious issues experienced in Braunton, the Health Scrutiny Committee at DCC which I sit on, submitted a series of recommendations. I am delighted that as a result of those recommendations, from September 2024, Plymouth University will now be offering a Pharmacy Degree (there were previously no Pharmacists being trained in the South West). Hopefully by “growing our own”, in the future we won’t see the shortages experienced in recent times. Devon County Council allocates each of its Councillors a £5,000 Locality Budget for projects in their communities. This year so far, I have been able to give funds to Braunton Youth Club for equipment, Braunton Men’s Shed project for a ramp, The Penguin Sports Foundation for the Frame Running Club at the athletics track, Braunton Community Speed Watch for High Viz jackets, Caen Rotary Heritage Trail and Braunton FC Women’s Walking Football Team. Please do get in touch if you have a project which needs some support Pru.maskell@devon.gov.uk.

BRAUNTON PARISH COUNCIL
THE BRAUNTON EXPRESS December 2023
Hedgehog Highway Project Can you help us to make Braunton a more hedgehog friendly parish? Did you know that hedgehogs can travel up to 2 miles a night! If you have a wall or fencing around your property this could be inhibiting access to
allow them to forage for food and meet mates. A Hedgehog Highway is a 5 inch gap in a fence or wall allowing access for Hedgehogs. Braunton Parish Council have signed up for the Hedgehogs R Us Highway Project and are offering free hedgehog shaped fence surrounds to raise awareness to the plight of Hedgehogs. The fence surrounds are made of recycled plastic and can be easily fitted to allow hedgehogs to travel through your neighbourhood. The surrounds are free and available from the Parish Council office next to the library. Get the whole family involved to help make your garden more hedgehog friendly. For further information on the project visit https://hedgehogsrus.co.uk/

Banjo, a threeyear-old Staffordshire Bull Terrier, is looking for a loving home at Dogs Trust Ilfracombe. Banjo’s biggest love is affection. He is big on fuss and snuggles and likes to be as close as he can to his people. He has a lovely temperament and can never get enough belly rubs. He is happy to travel in the car and enjoys going out for walks. He plods along nicely on his lead. He has visited the beach and a local pub recently with his foster carer. Banjo is social with other dogs, and he does not mind if friendly dogs join him out on a walk. He knows sit and has been practicing name response. He is nearly there with his housetraining; he will need a refresher once in his new home. Banjo likes a food puzzle toy, and he loves treats and chews. Banjo is looking for a home where his adopters will be around for most of the time. Any time left alone will need to be built up gradually. He could share his home with teenage children. He would be best suited to being the only dog in the home. We have no history of Banjo with small furries, or livestock. He can pass by cats on his walks with no issues, but we have no history of him living with any. Banjo would be friendly with visitors to the home and could cope with a reasonably busy home environment. If you think you could give Banjo the loving home that he deserves please visit: https:// www.dogstrust.org.uk/rehoming/dogs/terrierstaffordshire-bull/1268490

Cat of the Month - Beryl Meet Beryl! She is very camera shy so this photo of her definitely does not do her the justice she deserves.
This beautiful soul is in need of a loving home. Unfortunately it is likely that Beryl has been living the life of a stray for the last month or so. She is a shy girl but purrs loudly when you make a fuss of her. Beryl would be the perfect companion, can you offer her a quiet home where she can feel safe and loved? Beryl is estimated to be between 8 and 10 yrs old. She has been given a clean bill of health by the vet. The Adoption fee of £85 covers her vaccinations, microchip, flea and worm treatment.
