Let

s have a really BIG Christmas for Care for Kids

Help raise funds for a child close to you this winter, by hosting a Care for Kids BIG Christmas fundraiser.

Want to have some festive fun with friends and family? Perhaps you want to bring some festivities to the office? Then organise a BIG Christmas fundraising event on behalf of Care for Kids North Devon.

Whether it's a cake sale at work, quiz night at your local, Christmas jumper day at school or an online raffle, Care for Kids can help you on your fundraising journey.

Host a fundraising event for Care for Kids and you'll be supporting local families who have a child diagnosed with a life threatening illness or condition. Head to the Care for Kids website, www.careforkidsnorthdevon.org.uk or email admin@careforkidsnorthdevon.org.uk if you need any resources to support your event.

If you don’t feel like hosting an event, you can donate directly to the BIG Christmas campaign online at www.justgiving.com/campaign/BIGChristmasfundraiser

Care for Kids Charity Manager, Jacky Massos, says: “There are lots of ways you can help our charity to continue its work supporting North Devon families, who are struggling with the awful reality of having a child diagnosed with a life threatening illness. Hosting a BIG Christmas fundraiser is just one of them. Let us know if you’re planning an event and we can help promote it and inspire others to do the same. Your help really makes a big difference to the families we support, at Christmas and all year round.”

How you can help:

• make a donation to the BIG Christmas campaign on Just Giving

• hold your own fundraising event or take on a challenge and set up a Just Giving page

• make a donation and send e-cards instead of traditional Christmas cards

• sign up to easyfundraising and raise donations every time you shop online (at no cost to you!)

• follow and like Care for Kids North Devon on social media (Facebook, Twitter and Instagram)

Care for Kids North Devon provides financial support to North Devon families who have a child diagnosed with a life threatening illness or condition. The charity also carries out enhancements at the children’s ward at North Devon District Hospital. For more information head to www.careforkidsnorthdevon.org.uk.

People in North Devon are being invited to remember someone they love this Christmas, while supporting the vital work of the region’s two hospice charities.

This December’s Light Up a Life appeal will give people the chance to come together and light a candle in memory of loved ones at a series of special church services in support of North Devon Hospice (NDH) and Children’s Hospice South West (CHSW).

Services are taking place from December 4-11 in Barnstaple, Bideford, Torrington, Fremington, Woolsery and, Ilfracombe. They are open to everyone, not just those who have been supported by either hospice, and will offer heartening words of remembrance, carols and readings, as well as moments to reflect and remember those who are no longer with us.

Over the last 25 years, the Light Up a Life appeal has become a firm annual tradition in North Devon, raising hundreds of thousands of pounds for the area’s two hospice charities.

Emma Perry, Head of Fundraising at CHSW, said: “Christmas can be such a poignant time of year and our Light Up a Life services offer people a special way to remember loved ones and celebrate their memories.”

Ali Hunt, Head of Fundraising at NDH, added: “We would love for you to join us at one of our services this year. Your support will make a huge difference to local people supported by our hospices, both over the Christmas period and in the years ahead.”

To make a donation to this year’s appeal or for more information about the church services, visit www.lual.co.uk

The Braunton Neighbourhood Police Team would like to wish all EX33 readers a very happy Christmas and a safe and peaceful New Year!

Can we remind you in the build up to Christmas that this can be a popular time for thieves to strike and spoil your celebrations?

Please do not leave presents on show at home which can be clearly seen from a window especially when nobody is at home.

This also applies when out Christmas shopping. Lock your possessions safely in the boot of your vehicle if you are planning to revisit the shops. A newly purchased item often with the receipt attached is a very attractive proposition for a passing criminal.

Three legged Paxo is a fun loving four year old Lurcher who doesn’t let the fact that he’s a tri-pawd get in the way of him loving life!

He is a friendly, playful and affectionate boy and a big favourite amongst his carers. Paxo loves a fuss and snuggles from people he knows and is looking for a quiet home environment without too many visitors coming and going.

Paxo isn’t too fond of other dogs so much prefers quieter walks. He has learnt to wear a muzzle for when out and about and sees this as no different to having his lead and harness put on. He loves to head out on a walk but can’t walk long distances so would love a garden to enjoy and play with his toys he loves the squeaky kind! He enjoys treats and showing off his tricks which is great mental stimulation. He already knows a ‘sit’, ‘paw’, ‘down’, ‘wait’, and ‘touch’. He is a real character who will make you smile.

If you think you could give Paxo the loving home that he deserves please take a look at his profile on Dogs Trust’s website www.dogstrust.org.uk/rehoming.

End of Year Update from Pru Maskell

As we head into the Christmas period and the end of another year, I wanted to give residents an update on what I have been doing as your County Councillor and representative at DCC. It has been a difficult year for everyone and balancing the budget for the county has been challenging. It is frustrating for residents when potholes and weeds aren’t dealt with and I am continually reporting these issues and chasing them up. Thank you to everyone who took part in the Big Winter Clean Up in October. It was a really nice community event.

The Access for All group which I am a part of, have spent the year getting government funding for a Changing Places Facility for Croyde beach, which is a hub for ability surfing and desperately needs this facility. We were really hoping to have this in place before Christmas but due to delays in planning applications, it will most likely be in the new year. I am delighted that the Knowle to Willingcott section of the Tarka Trail is well underway in different stages and as funding becomes available this will hopefully be completed in the near future.

In July I used some of my locality budget to fund an event for local pubs to attend a Stamp Out Spiking training day. The Exeter based charity do excellent work and offer accreditation to all establishments who attend their training. It teaches staff how to spot the signs of drink spiking and how to deal with it, making our area a safer place to enjoy a night out. Thanks to all of our local pubs for supporting the event.

We have had a really difficult year with our village pharmacy, thank you to everyone who completed the feedback on DCC’s Pharmaceutical Needs Assessment (the most they’ve ever received). The findings of the report were disappointing, based on the idea that everyone in the county is a maximum of 20 minutes drive from a pharmacy does not take super rural vulnerability into account and poor bus services in rural North Devon. I voiced these concerns to the Health & Wellbeing Board and asked for assurances that the new Integrated Care Board will be committed to a future strategy for staffing gaps and managing this vulnerability. The Adult Health Scrutiny Committee, which I sit on, has now embarked on a review of pharmacy services across Devon as a result. I have also been in regular contact with the regional manager of Lloyd’s and am pleased to report that they have made significant progress in improving their service in Braunton. Thanks to all of their staff who have had a tough year.

I have been looking at road schemes for the area and have asked for designs for crossings at Wrafton (William’s Arms) and Ashford (garden centre). Whilst funding isn’t currently available, it is good to have designs ready for when money does become available. We have also been working with Braunton Academy and Southmead School to look at road safety between the schools and hope to have a solution next year. The dangerous junction as Heddon Mills outside of Knowle is now going to have a reduced speed limit with camera enforcement in the new year, following the sad fatality last year.

My locality budget has all been allocated for this year, but please do get in touch for next year if you have a project you would like some help with. Pru.Maskell@devon.gov.uk.

Wishing everyone a peaceful Christmas and a happy new year.
