Harry provides the kind of service that seems to be lacking from some other tradesmen here in North Devon. He did a great job redecorating my dining room . He arrived on the pre organised date without reorganising it several times and then promptly each morning . Got on with the job in hand, worked hard and paid attention to the little details . He cleaned up after himself and the final bill was very close to the original quote. There was a small problem with the finish on one of the walls which he pointed out to me then rectified it at no extra cost for the labour. All in all he was honest, trustworthy, hard working and capable. The end result is great and I'll certainly use him again. Remember loved ones and keep local hospice charities shining brightly this Christmas People in North Devon are being invited to remember someone they love this Christmas, while supporting the vital work of the region’s two hospice charities. This December’s Light Up a Life appeal will give people the chance to come together and light a candle in memory of loved ones at a series of special church services in support of North Devon Hospice (NDH) and Children’s Hospice South West (CHSW). Services are taking place from December 8-10 in Bideford, Torrington, Fremington, Woolsery, Ilfracombe, and Barnstaple. They are open to everyone, not just those who have been supported by either hospice, and will offer heartening words of remembrance, carols and readings, as well as moments to reflect and remember those who are no longer with us.

Over the last 25 years, the Light Up a Life appeal has become a firm annual tradition in North Devon, raising hundreds of thousands of pounds for the area’s two hospice charities. Emma Perry, Head of Fundraising at CHSW, said: “Christmas can be such a poignant time of year and our Light Up a Life services offer people a special way to remember loved ones and celebrate their memories.” Ali Hunt, Head of Fundraising at NDH, added: “We would love for you to join us at one of our services this year. Max Woosey has spent more than 500 nights sleeping under canvas, raising £640,000 for North Devon Hospice, becoming known to people across the world as 'The Boy in the Tent.' He was honoured with a prestigious Pride of Britain award, which was presented to him by his hero Bear Grylls, at a star-studded ceremony broadcast on ITV. On the night he was doubly surprised to receive a camping trip to Twickenham for the night with his Dad and to also be a mascot for the England/Australia match at Twickenham. Neighbour and family friend Rick Abbott was terminally ill with cancer when he gave Max a tent, and told him to “go have an adventure”. When Rick passed away, Max decided to do a sponsored camp out to raise money for the hospice which had cared for his friend in his final weeks. In March 2020, he set himself the target of sleeping in the tent until the end of lockdown, and hoped he might raise £100. As lockdown restrictions dragged on, Max refused to come in from the cold and donations poured into his JustGiving page. Now, over 18 months later, he is still on his fundraising mission. At 8pm each night, the 11-year-old puts on his pyjamas, collects up his teddies, the Beano and his torch, says goodnight to his parents and 16

makes his way to the garden. The marathon camper has now been sleeping outdoors for more than 500 nights, braving sub-zero frosts, heatwaves, and even Storm Bella. He has raised more than £640,000 for North Devon Hospice, enough to pay for 15 community nurses and cover more than half the hospice’s estimated losses due to the pandemic. Max thoroughly enjoyed himself and we all had a real once-in-a-lifetime experience." Max has also inspired thousands of other children to take part in Max’s Big Camp Out which raised awareness of children’s mental health, and says: “It makes me so happy to know I’m helping other people. There was a time the tent collapsed and it was soaking and I was tired and I came in and started crying, but I went back out.” He adds: “I am so honoured to win a Pride of Britain Award. I have loved almost every minute of it. I never thought I would win such an award, after all I am just sleeping!” Proud mum Rachael said: “No matter how awful the weather is he goes out night after night and will not give up. It has been an incredible 18 months, he has shown true grit and determination and winning a Pride of Britain award is the absolute cherry on the cake. It just goes to show what children can achieve if we listen to them and let them have a go.” Of the star-studded awards ceremony, Rachel said: "It was incredibly surreal to be surrounded by so many famous people, but we were reminded by the organisers that they were all here for the award winners. They were all here to meet people like Max, so all the celebrities were so happy to chat with us and hear more about his fundraising adventure. Changes to Covid Support Services in Braunton Braunton Community Network has been stood down for now as people have adjusted to a new way of living and there is no longer the need for this level or type of local Covid support. There are some kind-hearted volunteers who are continuing to support a few existing users directly. If you do need community support due to the pandemic there is still help available via North Devon Council’s Community Support Hub. Braunton Community Network was set up at the start of the pandemic and has either assisted directly or put people in touch with volunteers to largely collect prescriptions but also collect shopping as well as various other requests. During the shielding phase we also regularly checked in on vulnerable people and followed up on prescriptions due, as well as signposting people to other organisations we were working with such as the South Street Food Bank and Braunton Volunteer Bureau.

County Councillor Pru Maskell - December Update Since I last wrote in July, I have attended a number of full Council meetings and Adult Health & Social Care Scrutiny Committee meetings at County Hall in Exeter. One of the main issues facing the committee at the moment is the proposed closure of the North Devon Link Centres for mental health support services. These proposals are very worrying for the service users in our communities and all of the North Devon and Torridge County Councillors share these concerns. The upgraded crossing for Chaloner’s Road and the resurfacing of South Street will both be under way by the time this issue reaches you. The Bus Service Improvement Plan will be going to Cabinet in November and then submitted to the DofT. A huge amount of work has been going on to get it to this point. I have submitted a request for the 21A from Georgeham to stop at Tesco Braunton, which would allow residents from Georgeham, Croyde, Saunton, and Saunton Park, easier access to the supermarket. Currently there is only a Filers Bus from Ilfracombe which stops at Tesco twice a day. The 21A would also give residents of the Tesco development easier bus access to Barnstaple. I am still pursuing the idea of a crossing for Wrafton at The Williams Arms Junction. At the moment there are no funds for a scheme but by putting in some work now we may have a chance should some funding become available. Following some concerns about road safety on the Wrafton Road between the two schools, I have been looking into the School Streets Scheme and have been in contact with Devon County Council about the possibility. I am hoping that Braunton Academy and Southmead School will support this idea. Flooding has been a big issue for Knowle this autumn, making the bus stop and sections of pavement unusable at times. I realise that this makes life difficult for many residents and I am putting pressure on Highways to sort this out. Many residents of Braunton will know the Palmer family. Nicki, approached me a while ago about getting some improved facilities and access for disabled people at our local beaches. We formed a group called Access for All and have focused on Croyde beach which has become a hub for ability surfing due to the amazing work of The Wave Project. At the end of October we were able to submit a bid for a Changing Places Facility for Croyde Beach with the help of North Devon Council as part of a Government scheme. If we are successful, this facility will be available for any disabled visitors to the beach as well as the ability surfers from The Wave Project.
