August 2024

HAugust 2024

ello and welcome to the August edition.

Well here we are into the school summer holidays, will we be blessed with some lovely warm sunshine? I hope so.

We are so lucky to have so many wonderful places to visit with the kids right on our doorstep so make the most of them.

At the time of writing this, England have just won the semi-finals and will be playing on Sunday! Fingers crossed for them.

The Summer Olympics and Paralympics continue until 11th August so lots to watch on the TV!

We also have a summer bank holiday on 26th August, I’m sure lots of events will take place this weekend so I’m looking forward to that.

Have a great fun filled month and see you next month.

Lisa

Finally, if you would like to advertise your business to homes across Barnstaple and the surrounding areas each month, please get in touch.

Copy Catz has been serving the residents of Braunton for the last sixteen years by owner Julian Poulter, his mum Delphine and his fiancé. The shop really is a treasure trove of goodies catering for all, young and old with an array of arts and craft products, gifts, stationery, model cars and airfix models, dream catchers, jigsaws, metal signs and ‘OO’ scale vehicles to name a few! Julian prides himself on running an ‘old fashioned’ shop from the bell on entering the shop to the till on the counter.

Julian can also preserve your treasured memories by transferring VHS videos onto s and he can assist you in printing, binding and laminating

Julian has been particularly busy recently by self publishing his own This he describes as a cross between ‘Oliver Based between 1880 - 1888, the book is a tale of love, lust, survival, honour and courage and unfolds as s twists of fate forces him to abscond to Victorian London. Making allies and enemies, one of which may well answer to the name of Jack the Ripper, and the other would show him the meaning of hope.

Julian has won multiple awards for film scripts in International Film Festivals all over the world including Milan and LA with his film script ‘A Call to Arms’ where he won Best Feature Screenplay. He has now taken his latest film script into production with his book where he says his fiancé Lizzie Sumner loved the script so much that she persuaded him to publish it. Julian hopes that someday in the future, the book may also make it into film format.

His next award ceremony will be in Nice in a few weeks time and Julian hopes to rack up some more awards this time around with ‘Best unproduced script’.

‘The Locksmith’ gives a nod to Charles Dickens as one of the characters in the book is named John Huffam which is actually Charles Dickens middle names.

Julian explained to me that he recently had a customer in the shop from London who bought several copies of the book as he explained to Julian that his late relative was in fact ‘Montague John Druitt’ - a suspect in the the Ripper murders.

You can get your copy of ‘The Locksmith’ Copycatz, Braunton Post Office, J&S Wensley and Tarka Books in Barnstaple, amongst others for the price of £8.99.

Multi-National Award Winning North Devon All Starz return with a Musical in a Week 2024!

Within 5 days, the team of professional creatives will teach the young actors to perform a much-loved classic musical, which is then performed to the general public on the last day. Each year the shows are getting bigger and better and the excitement and word gets spread further. This year, the excitement has spread so far that the show even has participants coming especially from New York.

The Junior section for ages 4 to 8 years will perform Aladdin. Aladdin is a lovable street urchin who meets Princess Jasmine, the beautiful daughter of the sultan of Agrabah. While visiting her exotic palace, Aladdin stumbles upon a magic lamp that unleashes a powerful, wisecracking, larger-than-life genie. As Aladdin and the genie start to become friends, they must soon embark on a dangerous mission to stop the evil sorcerer Jafar from overthrowing young Jasmine's kingdom.

The Inters section for ages 9 to 13 years old will perform Shrek the Musical. Once upon a time, in a faraway swamp, lived an ogre named Shrek whose precious solitude is suddenly shattered by an invasion of annoying fairy tale characters. They were all banished from their kingdom by the evil Lord Farquaad. Determined to save their home, Shrek cuts a deal with Farquaad and sets out to rescue Princess Fiona, but the small act of rescuing the Princess may be dwarfed by her deep, dark secret.

The Senior section for ages 11 to 18 years will perform Beauty and the Beast. An arrogant young prince falls under the spell of a wicked enchantress who turns him

into the hideous Beast until he learns to love and be loved in return. The spirited, headstrong village girl Belle enters the Beast's castle after he imprisons her father Maurice. With the help of his enchanted servants, Belle begins to draw the cold-hearted Beast out of his isolation.

If your child would like to be involved, Aladdin and Shrek are already full but there still are spaces for Beauty and the Beast. Interested participants should contact Tolley at tolley.angell@yahoo.co.uk.

The shows will be Directed by local lad and founder of All Starz, Tolley Angell. Since the last Musical in a Week, Tolley finished working on the UK National Tour of The Bodyguard the Musical. He can currently be seen working in theWest End on Tina: The Tina Turner Musical.

Tolley brings with him a team of West End and Broadway creatives to work alongside him. All the creatives are very excited to be coming to Barnstaple and working with the talented young people.

Public performances will be in the Theatre at Kingsley School, Bideford on Friday 9th August. Aladdin at 1.30pm, Shrek the Musical at 4:30pm and 7:30pm and Beauty and the Beast at 6pm and 9pm. Tickets can be bought on the door before each performance.
