Scam alert!

Unfortunately, we are still hearing of scams that are losing their victims thousands of pounds and it is happening in our community. There are too many to tell you about in this short article but one that keeps reappearing is the following. Criminals contact members of the public pretending to be from the victim’s bank or from HM Revenues & Customs (HMRC). They can contact via phone call, text or email and warn you that there’s been suspicious activity on your account. They then say that they’ve set up a separate “safe” account for you to transfer your money into – however this “safe” account actually belongs to the scammer. Similarly, some scammers will claim you need to withdraw cash from your account and they arrange to collect it from you. They may claim this is part of a police investigation.

If you get any calls from numbers you do not know, take five minutes to think: “Do I know who has contacted me? Are they who they say they are? Is this safe?”

Remember your bank, HMRC, the police, or any other trusted authority will never ask you for your PIN or banking passwords. They will never ask you to hand over cash or cards to a third party. Your bank will never ask you to transfer money to a different account.

Please warn any vulnerable neighbours, friends, and family that scams are still happening and to speak to a trusted person should they receive a call of a similar nature. .

To stay up to date on the latest scams, visit www.ActionFraud.Police.UK

If you are a victim of a scam, you can report this to Action Fraud on Tel: 0300 123 2040.

Five reasons to give a retirement home to an OAP (Old Age Pooch)

The team at Dogs Trust Ilfracombe is reminding those considering adding a four-legged friend to their family that giving an older dog a home is just as rewarding as having a young pup, with older and wiser dogs having lots to offer.

• Older dogs do not need as much exercise as puppies do, but still enjoy frequent shorter walks – perfect for those who like to get some fresh air but going on an hour-long hike is not for them.

• OAPs (Older Age Pooches) tend to be fully house trained and experts at basic commands, saving time and energy needed when training a puppy.

• Golden oldies tend to enjoy snoozing, making them the perfect afternoon napping partner or to have them snuggle by your feet while you are working from home.

• Dogs are great companions at all ages but with an older dog, what you see is what you get – there should not be any surprises.

• It is a win-win for the dog and their owner“Not only can adopters of older dogs enjoy all the wonderful moments their canine companion brings, knowing that they have given a senior dog a peaceful and loving home for their later years is a heart-warming feeling which can’t be matched”, says Dogs Trust Ilfracombe Manager, Elise Watson.

Dogs Trust Ilfracombe currently has several great golden oldies who are looking for retirement homes where they can put their paws up, here is a little information on three of them:

Dash is a nine-year-old Greyhound with a sensitive side. A little unsure when making friends with new people, he prefers a gentle approach without too much pressure. Dash’s dream home would be in the countryside, nice and peaceful, away from traffic, with limited noise and with a nice secure, enclosed garden. He fits the definition of a couch potato well, as he loves to either stretch out or curl

up on a comfortable dog bed, human bed, or sofa. He is a gentle, sensitive soul and food is the way to his heart. He has a big love of chicken, cheese, and hot dog sausage, and this is the start of a great friendship. He would like calm walking canine friends but would like to be the only pet in the home.

George is a collie cross who has had a difficult start to life. He is also nine years old and would like to be the only dog in the home. Although he had never previously lived in a home, he has settled well into foster - he is house trained, travels well in the car and can live with children aged 11+. He would be a great companion for anyone looking to have a dog with them most of the time be it in the home or out and about. He is happy to walk in areas where there are other dogs but has no interest in playing or interacting with them.

Zac is the smallest of the oldies club. At 10 years old, do not let his age fool you, he can happily walk for miles. He adores his human friends and comes around very quickly for making new human friends. He finds it a little harder to make canine friends as he is unsure what to do when he meets them, so barks. His foster carers said, "Zac is a sweet, energetic little boy who enjoys a gentle body massage, and a scratch all over.' In his foster home, his favourite spot was on the sofa, or relaxing in the sun in the garden. He was excited to meet and greet any visitors to the home, then settled, and then enjoyed a fuss. He is housetrained and happy with car travel.

If you think you could offer any of these adorable golden oldies a home where they can spend their twilight years, visit www.dogstrust.org.uk/ rehoming

The Sports & Activities Directory is almost finished and we hope to send it to the printers by the end of July or early August. Progress has been delayed whilst Monica has chased up entries, however she is almost there and we are looking forward to seeing it in print and more importantly getting it out to the people who need it.

We held our first Youth Forum on the 3rd July at the Braunton Academy. There were 12 students, representing all ages and more importantly they shared some great ideas and visions. We have already secured funding to implement art taster sessions and will look at supporting & developing nature walks for young people, and we hope to work on some of the other ideas highlighted by the group. We are currently constructing a new youth section of support and information on our website, so young people are aware of what is available for them locally.

The free Baby Massage sessions with Early Nourishment have been a success, and I was lucky enough to be able to pop down to say hello, at the last session. The feedback was positive, and all felt it had been good to learn a new skill and to be able to have quality time with their babies. If anyone is interested in this course, contact support@livewellinbraunton.co.uk as we will be starting a waiting list and will try and secure further places.

The Wellbeing Walks are doing well, and we have extended the end time slightly (although not distance), as attendees are enjoying having the time to meet new people, share knowledge and enjoy the walks around the village.

A reminder the details are as follows:

Meeting point: Braunton Countryside Centre, in Caen Car Park Days &times: Every other Wednesday 10.30am-11.30/12pm. Please arrive 10 minutes early. (Times include pit stops and chances to take in the scenery). End time is dependent on the groups needs and abilities.

Followed by a free hot drink at The Braunton Countryside Centre.

Dates: 02nd August, 16th August, 30th August, 13th September, 27th September and fortnightly thereafter.

COMING SOON: Community Garden

Live Well in Braunton are currently looking to collaborate with local people & groups to develop a Community Garden. We already have a small list of interested parties but would welcome anyone who would live to assist to get this project off the ground. The vison is to have a safe green space that people can enjoy and give individuals/groups an opportunity to try out some gardening. The project is in the early developmental stage, but if you think you could help contact: connect@livewellinbraunton.co.uk

Grants for Village Centre Businesses to Enhance Premises

Existing independent town centre businesses in North Devon (including Braunton) are to be given a boost as a scheme that will award small grants for improving shop fronts or other potential enhancement projects has been launched.

The aim of the Town Centre Enhancement Scheme is to encourage businesses to upgrade, repair and refurbish shopfronts in North Devon’s town centres in order to emphasise the individuality of the business premises and, where appropriate, the historic character of the town centres.

This is a capital grants scheme based on the award to North Devon Council within the UK Shared Prosperity fund investment plan for 2022/2024 within the ‘improvements to town centres and high streets’ strand. The council will contribute up to 50% of total eligible project costs, with businesses expected to match the council’s contribution. The maximum grant available is £2000 or 50% of eligible project costs, whichever is the lower amount. The grant is ideal for supporting small repair or improvement

projects such as fascia repairs, signage, painting and decorating, guttering, lighting and more.

We welcome grant applications from small or micro businesses and all charities and social enterprises. Retail, cafés, restaurants, pubs, financial/professional services, tourism and leisure businesses are all eligible for this grant, and other cases will be considered on their merits.

There is an open-application approach with no set deadlines throughout the year, meaning applications will be determined on their own eligibility and merit on a first-come, first-served basis. Buildings eligible for grant assistance from the council are commercial buildings that are situated within the sub-regional centre of Barnstaple or one of the following areas within North Devon: Braunton, Ilfracombe, Lynton & Lynmouth, Combe Martin and South Molton.

The decision as to whether any works proposed are eligible for a grant will be at the sole discretion of North Devon Council. Interested businesses can apply on North Devon Council’s website.

Darling Greyhound Doris looking for her forever home.

-year-old Greyhound at Dogs Trust Ilfracombe, is looking for her forever home. A happy girl who adores her home comforts, Doris is instantly friendly with new people and enjoys a fuss and a snuggle. Doris likes to play with toys, and she sometimes enjoys a game of fetch, or she may just want to run around with her toy alone. She plods along nicely on her lead which makes walking with her an absolute a joy. She has gone on several trips with our volunteer off-site walkers, and they come back always singing her praises. Doris will need to be the only pet in the home and have opportunities to walk with other suitable canines when out and about.

Elise Watson, Centre Manager at Dogs Trust Ilfracombe, said:

“Doris is an absolute darling of a dog! She loves making new friends and is a hit with everyone she meets.

“She is currently living off-site in a foster home, on our Home from Home Scheme, but is now looking for her forever home. “Doris’s foster carer adores her, and says she is a wonderful and affectionate companion, who just sometimes needs a chance to settle. “As Doris is an ex-racing Greyhound, care maybe needed around small fluffy dogs, and when out and about Doris has been trained to happily wear a muzzle; as this keeps the local wildlife safe.”

Doris is happy to travel in a car that she knows, although initially with a new car she will need encouragement and treats. She is looking for a home with a garden or regular access to a secure field. Time left alone may need to be built up gradually. She will need a quiet home environment. Doris loves her bed and values her own space around it, and that will need to be respected.

Dogs Trust Ilfracombe is also calling on more people to offer a temporary home to dogs until they find their forever homes. Not only does this mean that the charity can support even more dogs, but it gives dogs waiting to find their forever family, like Doris, the chance to be cared for in a home environment. Fostering is a great opportunity for dog lovers to care for a dog in their home without the long-term commitment that comes with owning a dog. Dogs Trust covers all the essential costs whilst a dog is in a foster home, including vet bills, food, bedding, and toys. For more information about fostering, or if you think you could offer Doris a forever home, please visit https://www.dogstrust.org.uk/ rehoming/dogs/greyhound/1256464

Meet Frankie, a large and handsome five year old tabby. A much loved pet since kittenhood he has always wanted to be the top cat at home, and in fact the whole street! He loved his human family and the dog who he shared them with but really does not like any other cats in his life. As time has passed this became quite stressful for him and his family so sadly it was decided that he would be far happier living in a quiet rural area with no other nearby cats he feels the need to dominate. He loves to go out hunting but once back home is a very friendly puss who enjoys human company. We think he would be suited to a home with older children as has had no experience of young ones. Although it has been a very painful decision for his family to give up this loving cat, they and us are hoping someone will be able to give Frankie the freedom and space he needs to be a happy puss once again.

The ninth “stunning and savage” Croyde Ocean Triathlon took place on Sunday 2 July with 419 competitors battling it out on the beautiful North Devon coastline.

The Croyde Ocean Triathlon is recognised as one of the UK’s most challenging and scenic events. It was one of 220 Triathlon’s “Top 23 must-do” triathlon challenges for 2019, and shortlisted for best triathlon in the UK for 2020.

The course involves a 1.5km ocean swim at Putsborough Sands, followed by a 38km road bike course and a 12km off-road run over hilly coastal terrain, taking in the sights of the North Devon UNESCO Biosphere, North Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and the newly designated North Devon World Surfing Reserve.

Unfortunately, due to the unfavorable sea conditions, the RNLI took the difficult decision to cancel the swim, so instead the athletes did a 2km beach run before taking on ‘The Hero of the Hill’ challenge up the steep ascent out of Putsborough Beach before hopping on their bikes.

This was the ninth year the event has taken place, and the first under the new ownership of local environmental charity Plastic Free North Devon, with 100% of profits from both the Croyde Ocean Triathlon and sister event the Exmoor Swim now going to charity.

Many of the competitors taking part today were raising sponsorship for Plastic Free North Devon, as well as local charities Children’s Hospice South West and Family Compass.

The overall winner in this year’s event was Hamish James who finished the course in 2h09m32s.

The youngest competitor was 17 and the oldest was 70.

Around 140 volunteers joined in on the day to help ensure the event ran smoothly and our local RNLI team who ended up cheering the beach runners on!

Race director Jo Hibberd said: “At 4am in the morning I looked out at the Atlantic Ocean with a huge sense of pride and privilege at being at the helm of this event. The local support we receive is incredible, our community simply rocks! There is an enormous team effort that makes this special triathlon take place every year. A big thanks to the competitors for supporting us and the volunteers for starting at 5am in the morning!”

The Plastic Free North Devon team has been closely involved with the event since its inception in 2015, and in 2018 the event was awarded the accolade of being the first plastic-free sports event of its kind by Surfers Against Sewage. The charity has created a robust sustainability plan that is being implemented over the next few years to make this event the leading light in sustainable sports events nationwide. Features of the plan include: onsite vendor stipulations, sports merchandise purchasing guidelines, single-use plastics ban on site, reusable coffee cup return scheme and athlete event guidance, to name but a few.

Plastic Free North Devon CEO Claire Moodie commented: “ I’m so proud to see this event unfold knowing that it is now a Plastic Free North Devon event raising vital funds for our charity. It was strange to be on the other side of the finish line but just as amazing. I’m always blown away at how many people give up their spare time to come and help us make this event happen, I love the energy they bring. I love sport, I love our community, I love looking after the planet and this event does it all in one and I can’t wait to see what next year brings.”

The main corporate sponsor for both events is North Devon based dryrobe®, a company on a mission to inspire, enable, and improve the experience of an active outdoor lifestyle for everyone, and whose recent B Corporation™ certification reflects their ongoing commitment to building a sustainable business with environmental protection at its core. Other tri sponsors include Ninety One, 79 Group, BornBound, solicitors Brewer, Harding and Rowe, and Putsborough Sands.

Next year’s event will take place on 14 July 2024 and for the first time a “Still Stunning but Less Savage” Mini Tri is on offer, featuring a 1k swim, 22k bike ride and 5k run. Early bird tickets go on sale from 22 July 2023 at croydeocean.co.uk
