Insight North Devon
April 2023

Hello and welcome to the April edition.
Yippee, the clocks have now gone forward (as of 26th March) and the evenings are getting longer and hopefully warmer.
Thank you for the many entries that we received for the Tina Turner tribute tickets, we hope the winner enjoyed the performance.
Of course, Easter is now just around the corner Good Friday is on 7th April which marks a long Easter bank holiday weekend for us all. We hope you enjoy your weekend and the children enjoy their Easter breaks from school.
We also have St George’s Day on 23rd April.
Have an awesome April, enjoy your hot cross buns and chocolate and enjoy the lighter evenings.
See you next month, Lisa
Finally, if you would like to advertise your business to homes across Barnstaple and the surrounding areas each month, please get in touch.

The infamously ‘stunning and savage’ Croyde Ocean Triathlon is back for its ninth year with new headline sponsor - dryrobe® - the ultimate outdoor changing robe that’s revolutionised sporting events. Worn by athletes and mere mortals alike, dryrobe® is now just as a familiar sight on a beach as it is on the back of the elite athletes at sporting events all over the world.
Croyde Ocean Triathlon is well-established in the tri calendar with some 600-650 taking part each year. This Olympic distance tri event kicks off at the beautiful but rugged Putsborough beach and encompasses a challenging 1.5k Atlantic Ocean sea swim; a leg-busting 38k cycle route; and a demanding 12k off-road run over hilly coastal terrain, all set against the stunning coastal scenery of North Devon. This year’s event is taking place on Sunday 2 July with tickets on sale now at www.croydeocean.co.uk.
The event has a reputation as one of the toughest Olympic distance triathlon events in the world. The unique coastal landscape of the course sits within the North Devon UNESCO Biosphere, North Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and the newly designated North Devon World Surfing Reserve, reflecting its truly spectacular nature and rich biodiversity.
The event will continue to build on its sustainability credentials as new owners, the environmental charity, Plastic Free North Devon officially take the reins. The Plastic Free North Devon team has been closely involved with the event since its inception in 2015 and in 2018 the event was awarded the accolade of being the first plastic-free sports event of its kind by Surfers Against Sewage.
When responding to adverts please mention the ‘North Devon Insight’
Plastic Free North Devon is also taking ownership of the tri’s sister event, Exmoor Open Water Swim, which will take place at Wimbleball Lake, North Devon on Sunday 24 September (tickets on sale at exmoorswim.co.uk).
The Croyde Ocean Triathlon in association with dryrobe® and the event’s other sponsors, 79 Group and Ninety One, is delighted to announce that 100% of the profits from the tri and the Exmoor Open Water Swim will go to charity.
Jo Hibberd, Event Director for the Croyde Ocean Triathlon and the Exmoor Open Water Swim comments, “We are proud to be the new custodians of the Croyde Ocean Triathlon and delighted to announce our association dryrobe®. With dryrobe® as the event’s main sponsor we are excited to take this much-loved tri to the next level. We will continue to rise to the challenge of dove-tailing environmental sustainability alongside the physical and mental endurance of the s all about pushing ourselves to be the best we can be on both a s to a brilliant 2023 Croyde Ocean Tri -

Jack started fundraising in the first 2020 lockdown when he was 5 years old. He couldn’t get motivated to go out for a daily walk so he decided he wanted to help the doctors and nurses of the NHS - he walked 50km in 5 weeks and raised £1550 for NHS charities. For this he was honoured with a British Citizen Youth Award at The Palace of Westminster, where he met Tony Hudgell, a young boy who was badly abused by his birth parents resulting in a double leg amputation!
Jack asked his mum why Tony was in a wheelchair and when she said his parents hadn’t been very kind to him Jack decided he wanted to help vulnerable children like Tony! So in November 2021 Jack decided to run 1km everyday for 100 days to raise money for The Tony Hudgell Foundation and raised just short of £5000. He was made a fundraising ambassador for the foundation and since then the fun hasn’t stopped. He has raised in total just shy of £9,000. More excitement to come in the future but for now we need to keep it under wraps.
Jack was asked to be the Lynton and Lynmouth Cliff Railway local hero and to open them up for their 2023 season.
On February 11th Jack prepared breakfast for the Lynton and Lynmouth Mayor. He went around the local businesses of Lynton and Lynmouth and collected different breakfast items i.e. newspaper, eggs, toast, tea, flowers etc,. Jack then met the mayor at the Cliff top cafe where he made him a pancake.
Jack then cut the ribbon of the railway and opened it up for their 2023 season.
Alongside this, Jack had an online raffle with wonderful prizes from the businesses of North Devon and raised £1400!
Jack wore his British citizen Youth Award medal with pride.
The Tony Hudgell Foundation help children who have been physical, emotionally or psychologically abused. They provide grants to help with items to help these children have a better tomorrow.

After seeing Alison for the last few months, I felt the need to review her services.
I have had a few problems over the last six months including a TMJ disorder, this can cause pain in your jaw joint and in the muscles that control jaw movement. After trying several different options which didn’t work for me, I decided to contact Alison for my first experience of acupuncture.
The moment I met Alison I felt very relaxed. Alison is a lovely lady who instantly puts you at ease, she is very knowledgeable and throughout my sessions she has researched information to help me, going the extra mile for me.
The first half of each appointment Alison goes through her notes to see how any recommendations made by Alison the previous week have helped and to see if there are any changes in your symptoms. The second half of the appointment is when Alison inserts the needles into specific areas of your body and face to relieve your symptoms.
I must admit at first I was very apprehensive as I have a phobia of needles but these are completely different. They are very fine, soft and flexible, you do feel them being inserted but you are not in any pain at all. These are only left in for a short amount of time.
Alison takes the time to explain why the needles are inserted at the different points and how it will help with your symptoms.
I can definitely see the benefits that seeing Alison has made to me and I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend her to anyone needing assistance.
I found Alison very easy to talk to, she is very calm and caring, to be honest I think a session with Alison is more beneficial than seeing a counsellor!
