Max’s Final Camp Out Festival
After three years, ‘The Boy in the Tent’ Max Woosey, celebrates his final camp out on Saturday 1 April, 2023 at Broomhill Estate sculpture garden and boutique art hotel
On 21 January, Max Woosey, ‘The Boy in the Tent’ - who has already raised over £700K for the North Devon Hospice - issued a shout-out on his social media accounts ‘looking for somewhere really cool to camp’ to mark three years of sleeping out. This will also be his final celebratory camp out.
With offers flooding in from all over the UK and abroad, it was Broomhill Estate sculpture garden and boutique art hotel in North Devon, just a few miles from Max’s home in Braunton, that got the thumbs up.
Broomhill Estate is delighted to host Max’s Final Camp Out Festival. The day-long minifestival will kick off at midday on Saturday 1 April in and around the sculpture garden and boutique art hotel near Barnstaple in North Devon, UK. Broomhill is planning an epic day to remember to celebrate Max’s achievement with an amazing showcase of music and the magic of Hollywood.
Max says, ‘It was amazing that so many people got in touch from all over the UK wanting to mark my three-year anniversary of camping out, but I wanted to stay close to home and celebrate with friends and family nearby. Broomhill is a brilliant place for the celebration. We are going to camp out in the grounds amongst the sculptures and have a big party. There’s going to be bands and live music, fireworks and food, special guests, axe-throwing, and really cool movie memorabilia! It’s going to be epic! Thank you to Broomhill for doing this.’
Music-wise; there will be a main stage, an acoustic stage and an after-party, all courtesy of buzzy indie label Frictionless Music. The main stage will be headlined by Declan Welsh and The Decadent West, and also Fizzy Blood. DWDW is a 4-piece band from Glasgow with a focus on intelligent, relatable lyrics, catchy hooks and an electric live show. DWDW has already released four EPs and one album to critical acclaim, receiving a Scottish Album of
the Year Award nomination for their debut ‘Cheaply Bought Expensively Sold,’ as well as a BBC Introducing Track of the Week.
DWDW has garnered a reputation as ‘The Future of Scottish Rock Music’ (Courier), with Jack Saunders of Radio 1 commenting that “No one knows how to whip up a mosh pit like DWDW. I know - I’ve been in the centre of one!” It’s clear that DWDW has been tipped for greatness, having been selected to open the main stage of this year’s TRNSMT festival in Glasgow. 2023 will also see the band release their highly anticipated second album.
Movie-wise, festival-goers will be able to experience an amazing exhibition of neverbefore-seen authentic movie memorabilia. The exhibition is a collaboration between Broomhill Estate and Propstore. With offices in London and Los Angeles and over 25,000 combined square feet of archived props and costumes, Propstore is the busiest and most trusted authority in the hobby of collecting movie memorabilia.
The centrepiece of the exhibit will feature a classic ‘Alien v Predator’ showdown with lifesize versions of a 2-metre Predator facing-off against a 3.5-metre Alien Queen! There will also be a special guest appearance from actor Ian Whyte for autographs and pictures with him and the Hollywood props. Ian is a Welsh actor, stuntman and former professional basketball player. At 7 ft 1 in tall, Ian is well known for roles that require a towering physical presence. Ian has played the Predator numerous times as well as the Last Engineer in Prometheus, several roles in Game of Thrones including The Mountain, Gregor Clegane, the giant Wun Wun and a White Walker, as well as numerous roles in the Star Wars franchise and other films.
The exhibition will feature iconic movie props such as the original ‘Jumanji’ board, the original Kurgan hero sword from ‘Highlander’ (there can be only one, and it will

be at the festival), the bar of soap from ‘Fight Club’, Achilles’ (Brad Pitt’s) sword and shield from ‘Troy’, the Comedian’s costume from ‘Watchmen’, Alice’s hero costume from ‘Resident Evil: Apocalypse’ and many more legendary items. Cosplay welcome!
Max’s Final Camp Out Festival is a day festival with specialist festival food, drink and activities including axe-throwing, a silent disco in the woods, a party bus, fireworks, fancy dress, kids yoga, reptile handling and a chili eating competition to boot! The festival is family-friendly with activities for all ages. Festival-goers can return home at the end of day, or they can experience what Max has done for three straight years and camp out in their tents alongside Max.
Tickets to Max’s Final Festival Camp Out are on sale from 1 March at https://broomhill estate.com/events/whats-on/maxs camp-out/. Any profits from the day will be given to Max’s ongoing fundraising campaign for North Devon Hospice and individuals are encouraged to donate directly to Max JustGiving campaign.
Stephen Roberts, Chief Executive of North Devon Hospice, said: “This is a perfect way for Max to finish his fundraising challenge, which has been such an adventure and something he can look back on with so much pride. The funds he raised for North Devon Hospice in this time have made a real difference to the patients and families we support. Max has directly funded 15 nurses for a whole year. In that time, those nurses will have supported in excess of 500 patients who were facing the impact of a life-limiting illness like cancer.”
Max began his adventure on 29 March 2020, aged 10, and has now spent over 1,000 days camping out and has raised over £700K for the North Devon Hospice - his original target was £100! In the last three years he
has received the Pride of Britain, Spirit of Adventure award and the Bear Grylls Chief Scout Unsung Hero award, both in 2021. He was awarded the British Empire Medal in May 2022 and has recently given a TedX talk.
Broomhill Estate is a sanctuary for the arts in North Devon. It includes an internationallyrecognised sculpture exhibition which has been active for over 25 years and currently showcases more than 150 pieces throughout its gardens. It also has a commercial gallery whose focus is to support contemporary artists, celebrating both the traditional and modern crafts, engineering and thinking.
Broomhill’s art hotel has seven boutique bedrooms each with their own unique personality and ambience, inspired by arthouse and cult films and three eclectic lounges

Proposals to Close Mental Health Service Centres
Devon County Council (DCC) is undertaking a consultation process on the proposal to:
Close the North Devon Link Service (NDLS) Drop-in centres in Barnstaple, Bideford and Ilfracombe.

Targeted investment in the voluntary and community sector, may be considered to support the development of alternative services if not readily accessible.
To cease the outreach support to those people in receipt of Care Act eligible services, including assessments, and instead provide the support in different ways to be agreed with current service users
DCC is seeking your views on the future of the NDLS.

Paisley is a one year old Trailhound who loves an outdoor adventure!
He’s a sociable lad with other dogs when out and about but he can be boisterous so whilst he works on his doggy socialisation, he’d prefer to be the only dog in his new home. He’s a keen student when tasty treats are involved and knows a ‘sit’ and he is learning a ‘wait’.
Paisley doesn’t appreciate being snuggled in close but as he gets to know someone and has built up a trusting bond, he does enjoy gentle fuss and shows affection. Paisley arrived as a stray so we know very little about his history. He has been visiting the staff accommodation and learning all about the sights, sounds and smells of a home environment.
Paisley is looking for a loving and understanding home with adult adopters. He is not a dog who would enjoy busy environments like trips to the pub or busy cafes, preferring a quiet rural life with lots of outdoor adventures. He would like his adopters around for most of the time and any time left alone will need to be built up gradually.
Adopters interested in Paisley should be prepared to visit the rehoming centre a few times so you can get to know each other and build up a bond prior to adoption.
If you think you could give Paisley the loving home that he deserves please take a look at his profile on Dogs Trust’s website www.dogstrust.org.uk/rehoming

Cats of the Month - Purdey & Gambit
Twelve year old tabby and white Purdey has always lived with her black and white brother Gambit and the two are great friends. So they will always remain together even in their new home.
Although much loved since kittenhood, sharing their previous home with two dogs in recent years proved just too stressful for them. Time did not improve things so as painful as it was their owners decided they would be far happier being only pets in a new home.
Both were very shy at first, usually squeezing into a shared bed whenever people were around just for a bit of added security. After a few weeks in our care much has changed and they now enjoy and ask for a bit of fuss and have both shown what very affectionate sweet natured cats they really are.
A few special words about Gambit. As always with older CP cats, as well as the usual health checks Gambit had a senior blood test. This led to further tests, which showed him to have moderate heart disease, currently controlled by one preventative dose of medication per day which he happily takes in his food. This may or may not progress as he gets older, but in any event CP have decided to waive the usual £85 adoption fee and send him off with a some of the medicine he needs. Oh, and by the way, just to be different, a few years ago he lost a back leg in a fight with a car. He doesn't seem to mind, though, and is deceptively quick and agile when he wants to be. Just like any other cat.
All these two siblings need is a chance to enjoy a quiet, peaceful home with no other pets or children where with time we are sure they will blossom and be much loved pets once again.

HOW TO SAVE MONEY
AND HELP SAVE THE PLANET
If you haven’t visited one of local environmental charity Plastic Free North Devon’s (PFND’s) Braunton Repair Cafes at the Museum of British Surfing yet - what are you waiting for?
Designed to repair what might otherwise get thrown away, the Cafes are a hub for community engagement, featuring the patching up, mending, darning, and sewing of pre-loved items - the first Braunton Cafe of 2023 saw an electrician and carpenter join the team of superstar volunteers. A total of 33 items were repaired, including a trilby hat, a set of headphones, two electric blankets, and six coats.
The Cafes also serve to start a conversation around the impacts of fast fashion and throw-away culture, along with actions we can take to look after our environment (and save a penny or two in the process).
Cafe goers are encouraged to stick around, maybe learn some new skills, and share a cuppa and some cake.
The charity are on the lookout for more volunteers to expand the capacity and services offered by all of their Repair Cafes, including Braunton, so whether you’re a dab hand with a bike puncture repair kit, a sewing machine, or would like to help out by pouring the perfect cuppa or meeting and greeting new arrivals, please get in touch with Repair Cafe Coordinator Cathy Karniewicz cathy@plasticfreenorthdevon.org.
What can be fixed at each Cafe may vary due to availability of volunteers, so please contact Cathy or keep an eye on the charity’s social media beforehand to check what kinds of repairs are being offered that day.
Head over to www.plasticfreenorthdevon.org/whatson for details of all upcoming Repair Cafes, including new venues working with partners in Ilfracombe, Barnstaple, and Landkey, thanks to funding from The National Lottery Together For Our Planet Fund.
