Elite News September 6, 2019 3 A Note From The Dentist

Whiter Teeth Teeth whitening isn’t just for movie stars. Most patients do it for Dr. Demetra Jones a major DDS upcoming event. Other patients do it just because they want a brighter smile. There are several options with tooth whitening. Often the patient wants a whiter and brighter smile. Options for whitening are: over the counter whitening, in office whitening and custom made tray whitening

at home. Most of the time, whitening has a high success rate. Teeth are darker from coffee, tea, smoking, dental fluorosis, and just naturally darker teeth. At the store, there are over the counter toothpaste and whitening strips. At the dentist, you can have custom made whitening trays made that you wear a few hours or overnight depending on the concentration and product. At the dentist, you can do in office whitening which can take 1-2 hours. There are different systems of whitening, so all dentist do not use the same product.

Expectations and results can vary. No one can predict results long term. Whitening often last a few years with power whitening in-between at home. Drinking coffee, tea, smoking, as well as dark soda pop can have an effect on results. See your dentist for a whiter smile. But remember to take care of your gum health and cavities first to reduce sensitivity during the process.

Prairie View Grambling Classic By: Darryl Blair Sr.

It’s that time of the year again. You know, when the Texas heat finally drops down a couple of degrees and the kids are finally in the groove of being back in school. But the biggest thing that comes around this part of the year, is when the Tigers and the Panthers go toe to toe in the Cotton Bowl, “The Great State Fair Classic” to earn the title of being called champs for the whole year. Over the years, when it comes to Prairie View A&M and Grambling, here in North Texas, the focus has always been about the game when these two institutions of higher learning come up in conversation. Information about the history of these two schools is rarely a focus in social media and local newspapers. Prairie View A&M and Grambling have a lot in common when it comes to their history. Both were started around the beginning of the 20th century, with the desire to create an environment where young blacks could seek a higher education while studying amongst themselves, without the threat of being harassed. Neither one of these schools started out as 4-year colleges, instead they went through a series of curriculum changes, each time adding more programs which required more time to complete. Today, both colleges have expanded to include a number of master’s and Doctorate programs. Back in the day, these colleges were not known as Prairie View A&M and Grambling. They were known respectively as Agricultural and Mechanical College of Texas for Colored Youths and The Colored Industrial and Agricultural School. And they both started out with the desire to prepare students to become teachers in the area of agriculture. The current Prairie View President is Ruth Simmons, who came out of retirement back in 2017 after 5 years. In the past, she has served as President of Smith College and Brown University.

In an interview with the New York Times, Dr. Simmons is quoted as saying, “I wanted to offer the students the advantage of a strong education, that will prepare students for the careers they want, in a social and cultural context that helps them develop the confidence they need to perform, after graduation.” Rick Gallot, a former member of the Louisiana State Senate, has held his position as Grambling State University since 2016. He was born in Ruston and although there are a number of factors why he was selected over other candidates with hopes of becoming the President of Grambling, Mr. Gallot is actually a graduate of the University. Back in May of this year, before a subcommittee of the US House of Representatives Committee on Homeland Security, Rick Gallot stated the following, “We know that with the right support, HBCU’s will continue to lead as a critical answer to the 3-million-person Cybersecurity job gap that exists globally.” We chose to highlight this quote, because it is a good indication of how much of a sharp turn the university has made in academics and where their focus lies, which is creating real opportunities for its students. When you go to the game this year, remember, you are witnessing a legacy of young people continuing in the tradition of their community and ancestors to bring forth excellence in all they do and that by attending the, you help it to make sure this legacy is not interrupted. In addition to the great history between Continued on page 7

Our New World By: Brian Eberstein

Not so long ago, or I may not be remembering correctly, it may have been a long time ago, we all prided Brian Eberstein ourselves on being truthful in all our dealings. This was in both our business and personal matters. Perhaps the description of pride in being truthful is the wrong word. Probably we just believed that being honest was the correct way to conduct our lives as our parents and grandparents had told us so often. We also heard about the importance of honesty from our teachers, our ministers and rabbis. In short, we heard about the importance of being truthful pretty regularly from almost everyone in our lives whom we respected. Today ? That concept of honesty is long gone and apparently buried and forgotten. In my world as a personal injury lawyer working on car and truck crash cases, I almost expect that the person who caused the crash will lie about what happened and that person’s insurance company will back up and support that lie. On a grander scale, people elected to

high offices in our city, our state and, of course, in Washington DC lie so often, and as fast as a dog can trot, that we sometimes don’t think a thing about it. Just as I know that the person who ran a red light will lie and say he did not, I know that many elected officials think nothing of distorting important facts as they talk to us on TV or wherever we see them. So. Is there a way to stop this ? For me, it’s the courthouse and filing suit against liars as jurors are pretty smart and recognize liars for what they are. For all of us, it’s The ballot box and voting out the liars. Today, as it’s been forever, voting is crucial. If we’re unhappy and dissatisfied with the way our cities, states and national governments are being run by so many liars, we must vote them out of office. It’s our job to do that. Please do this. Register to vote. And then vote. Only by voting can we return to the concept of honesty in all our lives that so many of us value. Want to discuss ? Call me.
