It was an amazing site witnessed last Friday by the world’s adults when nearly four million children , including many in North Texas, gathered in cities, suburban and rural areas and in villages to express their outrage that elected officials and policy makers are doing very little to reverse a changing climate which is a direct threat to them. The young people, many of them taking a day off from school, spoke to the world in one clear voice, declaring that their futures, their ability to earn income and to live decent and productive lives is in doubt and that doing was nothing was unacceptable to them. In cities such Cape Town,

Berlin, New York, Kampala, New Delhi, Melbourne, Houston and Dallas they demanded a future in which they and their families would be unharmed by poisonous air quality, raging storms and changing weather patterns that have recently resulted in death and destruction. In speech after speech they declared that they were frightened about their futures, and reminded those who listened that they would soon be of voting age, and that they would remember those who were indifferent to them, and their demands. In Houston where Tropical Storm Imelda recently flooded homes and destroyed property, students marched and chanted in loud voices, “Our streets flood, so we flood the streets.” Many of these same students witnessed the viciousness of Hurricane Harvey just two years ago which brought their city and the region to a lifethreatening standstill. They joined their fellow students in their outrage because they have seen the danger and witnessed the
burdens that changing climates can bring. Like their fellow students and many others they are tired of those who refuse to take the actions that the world’s leading scientists describe as necessary. In the House of Representatives we have passed legislation designed to stop the rise of dangerous green-house gas emissions whose presence in our atmosphere leads to the warming of our planet. The Republican controlled Senate has refused to consider the legislation, alining itself with President Trump and his administration. The children are being purposeful, and we should be very proud of them. They bring great meaning to the words that are found in 3 John 1:4 which reads, “I have no greater joy than to hear that my children are walking in the truth. *Congresswoman Johnson represents the 30th Congressional District of Texas in the United States House of Representatives. She also chairs the House Committee on Science, Space and Technology.

Dallas awarded $500,000 grant to preserve African American civil rights history City of Dallas Public Affairs and Outreach Dallas, Texas – The City of Dallas was awarded a National Park Service (NPS) Grant in the amount of $500,000 to preserve African American civil rights history. This funding will support major renovations of the Juanita J. Craft Civil Rights House. The African American Civil Rights Grant Program awarded $12.2M and is funded by the Historic Preservation Fund and administered by the National Park Service, Department of the Interior. Through this nationally recognized award, NPS seeks to support efforts nationwide to preserve resources, places and stories which tell defining parts of our nation’s history and the African American experience and civil rights movement.

A PROFILE IN JUSTICE: JUDGE ERIC V. MOYÉ Judge Eric Moyé is a fixture at the Dallas County courthouse, where he works daily handling civil matters. He is also a fixture in the Democratic Party, someone you are likely to see at party events, campaign block walks and community picnics. That is Judge Moyé’s professional side. But he is also a fixture in the community as a volunteer, educator, mock trial judge. “I am wholly dedicated to our system of justice, and its continuous improvement, because I have travelled around the world and I’ve see the justice systems in other countries. Ours is still the best and has the capacity of being even better,” says Judge Moyé. “Here’s an example. Did you know that the Hell’s Angels have gone to court to protect their branding, their logo? Here’s an example of a group of people who like to appear ‘uncivilized’ going to court and acting in a civilized manner because they respect our justice system. That’s just one anecdote about how powerful
our system is for maintaining a sense of fairness and justice and resolving disputes in a reasonable, common sense way. Can we improve? Absolutely. But we have a system that allows for that improvement.”

LEGAL BACKGROUND Today, Judge Moyé presides over the 14th Judicial District Court of Texas, sitting in Dallas County. He was first elected to this court in November 2008. Judge Moyé was also appointed in 1992 by Gov. Ann Richards to serve as Judge of the 101st Judicial District Court. He was named the Trial Judge of the Year by the American Board of Trial Advocates in 2014. Prior to taking the bench, Judge Moyé commenced his legal career with Akin, Gump, Strauss, Hauer & Feld, L.L.P., and formerly was a Partner and Member of the Management Committee of Vial, Hamilton, Koch & Knox, L.L.P., before becoming a founding Partner of Vincent & Moyé, P.C. In addition to his judicial service, Judge Moyé has more than 25 years of civil legal experience. He has represented large and small businesses in all manner of commercial litigation. He is licensed by the Supreme Court of the United States, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit, the U.S. Court of Claims, the U.S. District Courts for the Northern, Eastern and Southern Districts of Texas and the
IN THE COMMUNITY Judge Moyé has been active in numerous professional organizations including membership in Judge Moye volunteering for the State Bar of Habitat for Humanities Texas, the State Bar of New York, the American Bar Association, the Association of the Bar of the City of New York, the Dallas Bar Association, the Panel of Arbitrators of the American Arbitration Association, the American Association for Justice, the American Judicature Society, and the Texas Bar Foundation. He was formerly President of the Harvard Law School Alumni Association of Texas, and he is active in the Harvard Club of Dallas. He was a Founding Board Member of the Dispute Mediation Service of Dallas more than 30 years ago, and he currently sits on the Founding Board of the University of North Texas School of Law, the first and only public law school in the North Texas region. Judge Moyé has also served as an Adjunct Faculty Member at Southern Methodist University, and, for more than 20 years, he has been a Member of the Guest Faculty instructing at the Harvard Law School Trial Advocacy Workshop. Judge Moyé has been active politically with numerous Democratic campaigns, including service as a Delegate to the 1992 Democratic National Convention, and he has volunteered with numerous community organizations including Habitat for Humanity, founded by former Democratic President Jimmy Carter. “The Democratic Party is my party because it stands for fairness, equality, equal opportunity and the basic idea that we are all in this together,” says Moyé. “We have a chance to create a strong social fabric, a sense of caring for one another, when we promote the values of the Democratic Party.”

I once heard the saying “ A Good Leader Is A Good Follower! ”. I thought to myself hmmm? I have experience that cliché’ before and I truly believe in people who Cedric J. Scott follows directions and instructions well, can be good leaders. That’s why we have two legends of these prestigious universities represent excellence in a leadership role. First legend we have is David “Rusty” Ponton, a native of Mellville, Louisiana who was recruited to play basketball at Southern University. He played ball at Southern, then graduated with a Bachelor Degree in Mechanical Engineering. He also has a Master Degree in Sports Management and a Doctorate Degree in Development Education. To go along with those achievements, how about being a coach on the USA Womens Basketball Coaching Staff in International competition and winning a gold medal. He was later inducted into the Southern University Sports Hall Of Fame , which is his alma mater to some surprise and later inducted into the SWAC Sports Hall Of Fame as well. He coached the Men and Womens Basketball at Grambling State University for several years and have served over 30 years on staff for Grambling State University in several capacities. Now Dr. Ponton wears two hats as the Director Of Athletics and The Vice President Of Student Affairs. The second legend we will share with you is Mrs. Alicia Pete, a native of San Antonio, Texas. She was recruited to play basketball at Prairie View A & M University but ended up playing volleyball as well. Mrs. Pete excelled in her sport so well that she made the 1st Team All SWAC Tournament Team in 1989 and 1990. She later graduated from Prairie View with a Bachelor Degree in Business Administration and a Master Degree in Health. She coached several sports including volleyball in which they have won a SWAC Championship while Mrs. Pete received SWAC Coach Of The Year AWARD IN 1999 . She was inducted into Prairie View Sports Hall Of Fame and the SWAC Sports Hall Of Fame. Mrs. Pete has served 21 years in a role as an assistant director of athletics, coaching and other capacity of sports at PVU. So
in essence, she has about 30 years of serving at her Alma Mater as well. To sum this up in a nutshell, both Dr. David Ponton and Mrs. Alicia Pete displays what I called true loyalty and humility by sharing their vision, skills, coaching traits and people
management abilities to present the very best of athletics that these two awesome programs can provide for all proud black colleges. Hopefully at this point, you will agree with me that “They Can Keep Calling The Shots! “

Have you ever heard this expression ? “ The more things change, the more Brian Eberstein they stay the same “. To me, that means this. We see changes in many political offices, we see changes in ownership of businesses or real estate, we even see changes in our own families. We are also now seeing changes with what lawyers are saying in their marketing on television or radio. That may be because of what I’m saying. But. There’s nothing necessarily wrong with change as long as it’s beneficial AND honest. What bothers us is when we’re promised beneficial change and told it will be helpful but nothing different occurs. We see that in Washington and Austin and Dallas, too. But we also now see it and hear it with lawyer marketing. I’m getting calls every day, and I answer them all, with people telling me that someone came to their house or the hospital to get them to
sign documents and it wasn’t the lawyer but days or longer later they still haven’t spoken with their lawyer. Often they never speak with their lawyer. Even by telephone. If you’re really tired and disgusted and angry with the false promises and assurances out of Washington and Austin and Dallas, then please vote these liars out of office. Vote. You must vote. And. If you’re equally tired of hearing a lawyer on tv or radio telling you how much they care about you and then not being able to even speak with that lawyer to discuss what a car or truck crash is all about before you hire him or her, then try this. Call me. I answer my phone, I answer questions every day about car and truck crashes, I tell everyone what they should likely expect will happen and I also tell them this.
