CITIZENS’ CIVIL ACADEMY In September 2015, Judge Williams created the Citizens’ Civil Academy (“CCA”) to educate Dallas County citizens about the civil court system.

The CCA explores the types of cases heard in the civil courts and what happens to a case from the time the case is filed until it is disposed. CCA’s goal is to provide citizens with a better understanding not only of the civil court system but also the inner workings of the George L. Allen, Sr. Courts Building.

Citizens Civil Academy is free to participants (costs are absorbed by Judge Williams’ campaign funds) and offered twice a year, in the spring and fall.

‘WHO TRULY WINS THE STATE FAIR CLASSIC PRAIRIE VIEW OR GRAMBLING STATE?’

This state of affair between these two HBCU’s are displaying what I call “Classic Moments” because of the history of black colleges. This highly spectated event has all the trimmings to be remembered for Cedric J. Scott years. Part of it is The Grambling State University World Famed Tiger Marching Band and the Prairie View A & M University Marching Storm, which are two are the best bands in the nation performing live.

The halftime show is well respected and will display great entertainment that will make every alumni proud of their schools. So let’s look at a brief history of black college football. The first football game between HBCU schools was played on December 27, 1892. On that day Johnson C. Smith defeated Livingstone College. As it was the only game played by HBCU schools that year, Johnson C. Smith’s team could no doubt claim to be that season’s HBCU national champions by default. However, the earliest documented claim to such a title was Livingstone’s 1906 team, led by Captain Benjamin, the best team—or if they simply declared themselves champions. Being the first game played back then started a national proud spectacle for all African American HBCU players, event participants and administrations to attend annually. This brought a lot of fun and bragging rights to talk about each year. Which brings us to the Great State Fair Classic between Prairie View Panthers vs. Grambling State Tigers. Quick facts shows that Grambling State University won 15 National Championships and Prairie View University has won 6. In addition, Grambling State has won 25 SWAC Championship, whereas Prairie View University has won 9. The winningest football coach for Grambling State is Eddie Robinson from 1941 to 1997; Winning Percentage 70.4. (WINS: 408 LOSSES: 167 TIES: 16). Winningest coach for Prairie View is William J. Nicks from 1945 to 1965; Winning Percentage .787(WINS: 126 LOSSES: 38 TIES: 8). Just to add, here is a list of few notable players who have played for both universities. Grambling State: Bob Atkins, Buck Buchanan, Scotty Anderson, Willie Brown, Bruce Eugene, James Harris, Jason Hatcher, Charlie Joiner, Trumaine Johnson,

Everson Walls, Doug Williams, Albert Lewis, Sammie White, Jake Reed, Nate Singleton, Andrew Glover, Ernie Ladd and many more.

Prairie View: Charlie Brackins, Calvin Scott , Ken Houston, Sam Johnson, Arthur Gillum, ,Charles Fisher, Otis Taylor, Quinton Spears, Jim Kearney, Clem Bo Daniels, Rufus Granderson, Anthony Stubbs, C.L. Whittington, Charles Garcia, Freddie James, Hensley Sapenter, Otto Brown and many more. Congratulations, to every player who has played for these schools over the years and kept the tradition going forward. These historic universities played each other every year, but finally agreed to play at a neutral site to display their talents in the city of

from 1984 to 1988 and as a hard working team we accomplished our goal of winning under the helm of Head Coach Conway Hayman.

Now Prairie View’s Head Coach Eric Dooley and Grambling’s Broderick Fobbs must lead their teams to this epic battle in the Cotton Bowl. Furthermore, this classic has all former players and coaches excited about the past years results and wishes for their continued success of keeping this affair one of the top HBCU games played once a year in the City of Dallas. I hope that all State Fair goers attend the festivities of this event and enjoy the games that are played annually in this 92,000 seat stadium. Who will really win the 2019 State Fair Classic? In my opinion, both schools are winners because this traditional game is highly honored and allows the students to display all of their talents on and off the field. The alumni should be proud to attend and cheer on their schools through every dynamic possible. Lastly, if you are a Prairie View or a Grambling fan; save the date; Saturday, September 28, 2019 for some real HBCU college football in the Cotton Bowl!

You must do this. It’s not peanut butter By: Brian Eberstein

I grew up in Dallas. Most of my early years were spent in the south Dallas/Fair Park neighborhood. If you know about where the annual MLK Parade starts Brian Eberstein on MLK, that’s Holmes Street. My family lived right off Holmes, one block over. I was thinking about those early days and remembering a few things that don’t seem to exist today.

This happened at a popular fast food place with lots of kids present along with me and some of my grandkids. I happened to overhear some kids at a table next to us telling their mother, I believed, that they didn’t like whatever she had purchased for them and weren’t going to eat it. After a few minutes of discussion, the mother gave in and got up to go buy something else. That started me thinking about years ago. Sure.

When I was a young boy, there were very few “ fast food “ restaurants. Most meals were right in that small house between Holmes and Ervay. But, I remembered this. If my mother cooked it, that was what my brother and I were eating. Period.

No asking for something else if we didn’t really like liver and onions. No asking my mother to go back in the kitchen and prepare something else. No asking why we had to eat all that was on our plate. We knew the answers. Eat your food or you can just be hungry. Same with my lunches in that brown paper bag I opened at Colonial Elementary School on Pennsylvania Street.

Eat my lunch. I actually liked, really liked, peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. Grape jelly. Today ? Sure. It’s a different world and now many kids can’t eat peanut butter.

Why ? Allergies I’m told. I’m guessing that I and most of my classmates were either too poor or too dumb to know about allergies or ask why it was pb and j again in their lunch.

So, if you’ve read this far, what does this have to do with my car crash world ? It’s just this. Questioning about your car crash is the right thing to do. It’s not at all like asking my mother what is this mystery meat on my dinner plate. If you’ve been injured in a car crash, you have to ask questions.

Who are you asking ? Your lawyer, of course. It’s also not like asking your mother why you had a peanut butter and jelly sandwich again in your lunch bag. I hear from many people who call me to complain, yes, complain, that they have no idea about what’s really going on with their car crash case. They can’t speak with their lawyer, the assistant doesn’t have good answers and, as a result, they don’t know what is going on with a very important event in their life. A car crash that has upset their entire life and the lives of their family members.

Questions are a mainstay in the lives of most lawyers. We ask many every day. For me ?

I’m expecting and asking my clients to ask me any question about their case. They have to know what is happening. It’s a must. So ?
