RICHMOND — North Cache Middle School students, faculty and staff celebrated the completion of the “World’s Largest Puzzle” with special guest founder of Dowdle Folk Art Eric Dowdle.
“I’m very proud of our students and our faculty, our staff, that came together and accomplished this pretty challenging project,” NCMS Principal Cindy Parkinson said. “It’s a really challenging puzzle.”
According to Dowdle, the middle school was the first school to complete the 60,000-piece puzzle which featured landmarks across the world with the world map on the forefront.
The puzzle is divided into 60 puzzles of 1,000 pieces each which fit together to create the 8-foot by 29-foot art piece.
The project was inspired when North Cache Science Teacher Marla Trowbridge who saw the puzzle at Costco and asked Parkinson if building the puzzle could become a school project.
“Honestly, I thought it would be months,” Parkinson said. “They kicked it out in like four weeks. I was amazed at how quickly they did it.”
According to Trowbridge, 19 teachers agreed to host some of the puzzles in their classrooms while other puzzles were in the media center where students could work on them before school, during lunchtime and after school.
Trowbridge and Parkinson said the puzzles have had a positive impact in the classrooms as students developed teamwork, had a sense of accomplishment and exercised their brains.
“That’s been one of the surprising positives that we didn’t anticipate that came out of this,” Parkinson said. “Because the kids, when they get done, instead of being done and being bored and wanting to talk to
their neighbor or get on their phone or something, they just quietly get up and go over and work on the puzzle.”
Trowbridge said one of the classrooms that got a solid yellow section of the puzzle, which were some of the most challenging sections, and it took them two weeks to complete the puzzle.
The teacher didn’t want a second puzzle because she felt the students had taken too long but reluctantly accepted it. The class finished the second puzzle in a day and a half.
“It’s because they had to do all of this stuff on shapes and now, they are way better at puzzles,” Trowbridge said. “It’s super, super fun.”
Dowdle said seeing the students use their free time to work on the puzzles and come together for a common goal is one of the reasons he created the puzzle.
“It’s exactly why I did it,” Dowdle said. “To stand in front of the school and see the kids all excited, that was everything. It’s a joyful accident.”
During the assembly, the students put all 60 puzzles together to create the final puzzle. Dowdle spoke to the students and explained that just like every piece of the puzzle was important, each and every one of the students was important to the school and community.
“With a thousand pieces, I promise you that when you have a missing piece on a thousand-piece puzzle, that one piece becomes the most important piece in the entire puzzle,” Dowdle said. “With a thousand pieces, 999 pieces are counting on that piece.”
Once completed, Parkinson said the puzzle will be given a special place in the halls of the school as a permanent piece of student and staff artwork.
“Our end goal was just to put this really big puzzle together and accomplish this challenge,” Parkinson said. “It’s going to become a permanent part of North Cache.”

Bear Lake Watch is taking a victory lap after getting a bill passed through the Idaho Legislature that recognizes Bear Lake benefits, and provides for its protection and preservation.
“Idaho Senate bill, S1112, passed unanimously through both House and Senate,” said Claudia Cottle, a Bear Lake Watch member pushing the bill with her husband David. “It was signed by Idaho Governor Brad Little at a signing ceremony Wednesday, March 29.”
This action will put Bear Lake into the same category as other prized and protected lakes in the Gem State.
“It will stand as a guidepost for future governance of Idaho to stay the course leading to the preservation of the natural character of the lake even while we use it to aid irrigation production and power generation,” she said. “This was a great day for Idaho and for Bear Lake and all the people who cherish it.”
This bill is a strong statement that Bear Lake should be preserved for all generations to be able to know and enjoy its inherent qualities. The lake will be preserved for its natural character even while it is used to aid irrigation production and power generation.
“This has been a long time in the making, setting the stage, helping people see the need, developing trusting partnerships, finding the right words to put on paper and finally guiding it through the legislative process,” Cottle said. “We send a heartfelt thanks to all who assisted us along the way.”
Senator Mark Harris, Representatives Josh Wheeler and Kevin Andrus were instrumental in guiding the Cottles through the governmental process.
Bear Lake Watch has one goal to have the lake recognized in two states: Idaho and Utah. After getting Idaho on board, they are lobbying Utah for the same recognition and protection.
The state of Utah spent hundreds of millions of dollars trying to rescue Utah Lake and the Great Salt Lake and appointed commissions to watch over them. Cottle believes if they had spent the money early on trying to preserve those two lakes they could have avoided spending the money trying to preserve them now.
The 109 square mile lake is often referred to as the “Caribbean of the Rockies” for its intense turquoise blue water and is considered one of the oldest lakes in the continental United States.
The lake is a popular place in the warm months of late spring and summer, bringing thousands of visitors to play in the cool water and on the sandy beaches. Winter also offers a variety of activities including snowmobiling, cross country skiing, ice fishing and more.

LOGAN - A park to honor the legacy of Utah State University graduate May Swenson, one of America’s most important poets, opened with a celebration hosted by the USU Department of English in April. The park is located at 669 East 500 North in Logan, the site of her childhood home.
A child of Swedish immigrants who grew up in the shadow of the university graduated from USU in 1934 and two years later moved to New York City. After she began to achieve a degree of prominence, she resisted the idea that she was following in the footsteps of other poets like Emily Dickinson and Elizabeth Bishop.
Crumbley said Swenson eventually developed a long-standing relationship with Elizabeth Bishop through correspondence and she allowed Bishop to read her poetry.
“Elizabeth at one point wrote ‘experimentation is fine but at some point you simply have to draw the line. You have to stop.’ And May’s position was the opposite," explained Crumbley. "She said, 'No! I don’t have the kind of control that would allow me to turn off the poetry spigot.'”
Swenson authored several poetry collections while teaching at multiple institutions and received several awards for her work before her death in 1989.
USU Emeritus Professor Paul Crumbley, who is writing a book about Swenson’s poetry and was a part of the park's ribbon cutting ceremony, said Swenson began to define herself as a poet who didn’t have a clear historical context for what she was doing.
“There was a spontaneity to her poems that she wanted to sustain," Crumbley said. "And so her identity was as a kind of poetry outsider. And she sort of polished and refined that identity over time.”
He said Swenson defined herself as an experimental poet. And because of that nature of her work, she spoke to a number of different audiences.
“She was interested in space flight and science, for instance," Crumbley added. "She was also famous, and continues to be famous, for her love poems. And that appealed to a particular population as well.”

LOGAN – The “crown jewel” of the Cache Valley entertainment community is 100 years old and still going strong. The Ellen Eccles Theatre celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2023 by commemorating all of the roles that the theater has performed during its rich history, according to Wendi Hassan, the executive director of the Cache Valley Center for the Arts.
Under the name Capitol Theatre, the venue opened on March 29, 1923. In the years that followed, it hosted community theatrical performances, movie premiers and national touring shows.
The 100th anniversary celebration led off with a concert performance by members of local theater and choral groups. The Eccles Theatre remembered its good old days as a movie palace by featuring a cartoon, a vintage newsreel and the feature film Back to the Future, Part 1. Finally, as part of the CacheARTS 2022-23 touring season, a joint performance by celebrated singer-songwriters Marc Cohn and Shawn Colvin closed out the theater’s anniversary celebration.
Given the glory of its current state, you’d never know that the Ellen Eccles Theatre has had its ups and downs over the years. The storied history of the Ellen Eccles Theatre actually begins in 1912, when its predecessor – the Thatcher Opera House – burnt down overnight on April 17.
The following summer, George W. Thatcher Jr. and his brother, Brigham Guy Thatcher, approached local heiress Eunice "Luna" Young-Thatcher about funding the building of a new theater in Logan. Eleven years and $250,000 later, the Capitol Theatre opened. Luna never saw the opening of the theater she had funded, having passed away two months prior to that event.
Named after its rival in Salt Lake City, the new Capitol Theatre boasted an elaborate fly system for stage plays, excellent acoustics and an opulent interior. It was the heart of Cache Valley cultural activities for decades and
the theater’s structural beauty attracted great touring circuit entertainers like Bud Abbot and Lou Costello; John Phillip Sousa; the Marx Brothers; and, George Burns and Gracie Allen.
With the advent of talking pictures in the 1930s, film-making became more dominant in America and thousands of avid moviegoers flocked to the Capitol Theater in two decades that followed.
In the period from the 1950s to the 1980s, however, live productions ceased at the Capitol and the building gradually deteriorated.
The ornate plasterwork had been painted industrial green, burlap sacks covered the stunning murals portraying the mythical phoenix bird and a massive plywood wall blocked the stage.
While some spoke of demolishing the building to provide additional parking space, visionary citizens led by Michael Ballam saw a greater potential for the aging structure. The Capitol Arts Alliance was founded in 1989 to oversee the restoration of the Ellen Eccles Theatre and the construction of the adjacent Bullen Center.
As a result of a grassroots effort, the building was transferred to the City of Logan, becoming a community theatre in the very best sense. More than 300 volunteers and over 40 businesses participated in the clean-up, donating more than 1,164 hours of volunteer labor.
Four years and $4.3 million later, the project to restore the theater was completed. Nationally-recognized performers have since graced the stage of the Ellen Eccles Theatre and commented on the quality of the acoustics and the facility.
Along the way, the Capitol Arts Alliance became the Cache Valley Center for the Arts, dedicated to continuing to bring performing art opportunities to Cache Valley.
