the Old Book of Tang describes the scene: “On the night of the festival, the emperor ascended the Anfu Gate to view the lanterns. Palace ladies emerged hand in hand, singing and dancing, while court officials looked on. The festivities continued until dawn.” What began in the imperial court gradually spread to the temples and into everyday life. To this day, on the 15th night of the lunar calendar each year, people of all ages fill the streets to admire lanterns of every size and design. Viewing Lanterns on the 15th Night By Lu Zhaolin

The tradition of lighting lanterns on the final day of Chinese New Year dates back thousands of years. It originated as a way to honor the divine during the Han Dynasty, a time when Buddhism and Daoism were flourishing. Historical records attest to the grandeur of these early celebrations. Annals of Emperor Ruizong from 8│
Jinli’s grand banquet unfolds for a brilliant celebration; Under the shimmering lanterns, the young couple appears all the more alluring. Gazing into the distance, I see splendid glimmers peppering the land; And countless lights adorning the sky. It is as though the stars are falling upon the horizon; As though the moon is hanging on the eaves. Yet none of this beauty can compete with the fair lady, Her smile radiant beneath the chandelier.

Nurturing Luscious Hair A Guide to a Healthy Scalp By Pia Norris
W
hen it comes to healthy, strong hair, most of us focus on shampoos, conditioners, and styling products, but the real secret lies beneath it all: the scalp. A well-caredfor scalp supports growth, shine, and resilience, while neglecting it can leave the hair looking flat and weak no matter what products you use. Just taking a few simple steps to care for this often forgotten area can completely transform how your hair looks and feels.

The scalp is more than just skin. It’s made up of multiple layers and contains hair follicles, sebaceous glands, and a dense network of blood vessels and nerves. Each follicle works like a tiny factory producing hair, while the sebaceous glands secrete sebum, a natural oil that keeps your scalp moisturized and protected. Scalp issues are surprisingly common. Dryness leads to f laking and irritation, while an oily scalp can weigh down your hair and worsen dandruff. Other issues such as sensitivity, inflammation, and hair thinning often indicate that the scalp’s natural biome has been disrupted. DAILY CARE ROUTINE Just like the skin on your face, the scalp needs cleansing, moisturizing, stimulation, and targeted treatments. So having a consistent care routine is key. Here is how each step supports a healthy scalp.

Cleansing: The best shampoo removes excess oil buildup and impurities without stripping the scalp of its protective barrier. Look for pH-balanced shampoos tailored to your specific needs and choose sulfate-free formulations that preserve moisture while cleansing. Or if you have a sensitive or f laky scalp, look for shampoos with soothing ingredients like aloe, chamomile, or salicylic acid.
產品,以去除堆積角質、減少脫屑,並讓毛囊得以「 呼 吸 」。 精華液與收斂水:高濃度免沖洗護理產品,可針對特定 問題發揮效果。產品若添加以下三種成分,各有不同功 效:菸鹼醯胺(Niacinamide):強化屏障、舒緩刺激;
Moisturizing and Conditioning: Hydration is critical. Lightweight serums, scalp oils, and conditioners can help maintain your scalp’s moisture balance, reduce irritation, and create a healthy environment for hair growth. Ingredients like hyaluronic acid, peptides, and plant oils (argan, jojoba, or grapeseed) are great for nourishing both scalp and hair. Massage and Stimulation: To promote hair growth, use gentle circular movements to increase blood circulation and boost nutrient delivery to hair follicles, which in turn helps promote stronger hair growth. Even a few minutes a day can make a big difference.

WALK A MILE IN HORSESHOES What Ancient Chinese Horses Teach Us About Life By Linden Lee
T
hough our world today looks very different from ages past, imprints of our culture are forever etched into our souls and across the land. The next time you find yourself alone in an open meadow, take a moment to close your eyes and listen. When the winds are right and all else is still, you might just hear the faint gallop of distant horses and the steady pounding of loyal hearts once so deeply intertwined with our own. As humankind’s earliest mode of transport, horses left indelible hoofprints on the lifeblood of nations. Alongside our ancestors, they witnessed the rise and fall of dynasties, the devastation of wars, and the triumphs of heroes. They are the spirit of our forefathers incarnate and among Chinese people’s favorite animals of all time. Confident by nature and once the fastest way to carry travelers from place to place, horses became symbols of quick progress and success. For example, when you say “ma dao cheng gong” ( 馬到成功 ), you’re wishing someone instant success upon arrival—just like a swiftly arriving horse. Today, serving more as companions than as beasts of burden, they still teach us important lessons about life.
SOARING ON A HEAVENLY STEED Han Wudi, the seventh emperor of the Han Dynasty, was renowned for his military prowess. Under his rule from 141 to 87 B.C., China was a formidable power. Lulled by peace and prosperity across his realm, the young emperor turned his ambitions westward to Dayuan—now the Ferghana Valley of Uzbekistan—the rumored homeland of the divine “blood-sweating” stallions capable of running a thousand li (more than 250 miles) in a day. Determined to claim these magnificent steeds at any cost, Han Wudi launched two distant campaigns. Historians have long debated the wisdom of this decision. Some viewed it as reckless and criticized the emperor’s near-fanatical resolve. But if we were to walk in his shoes, we might come to see that Han Wudi’s reverence for the “tian ma” or “heavenly stallions” went far beyond just wanting a nice steed. His true
Pasturing Horses by Tang Dynasty painter Han Gan depicts an official groom riding a white horse while leading a black steed beside him. By Jenny Zeng
“I
’ve never been one to scheme or be calculating. What I say is what I mean. I believe in living honestly and treating people with sincerity,” Lisa Lu told a roomful of youngsters eager to hear her philosophy for living. A first-generation Asian American actress in Hollywood, the 98-yearold star is as spirited and radiant as ever—unbowed by decades in the spotlight. Last July, she attended the New York Asian Film Festival for the international premiere of her documentary Lisa Lu Plays Herself. At the press conference, Lu greeted reporters warmly and empathized with the challenges of their work. “I’ve done jobs like this before, so I totally understand,” she said, her eyes misty with tears as she spoke about life before Hollywood—the days when she, too, was just a young reporter in Hawaii. “Every morning, I started translating the news at 5:00. By 9 o’clock, the drafts had to be off to the press,” Lu recalled. During those years, she interviewed famous figures such as Madame Chiang Soong Mei-ling, the former first lady of the Republic of China (Taiwan), and even reported on the historic

A global capital of art and culture, New York is home to renowned museums as well as a wealth of small, highly specialized galleries beloved for their story-rich collections. Nowhere is this more evident than on the Upper East Side, where many galleries are housed in elegant residential townhouses and mansions. These intimate settings bring art closer to everyday life, creating a more immersive viewing experience. Below is a curated selection of leading galleries and top dealers, several of which will open their typically appointment-only spaces to the public during the Asia Week.

Founded in 1956, the Asia Society Museum is celebrating its 70th anniversary with a special exhibition, Buddha and Shiva, Lotus and Dragon. On view from March through January of next year, the exhibition features more than 70 works from the museum’s permanent collection, many of which were originally acquired by the Society’s founders, John D. Rockefeller III and his wife, Blanchette Ferry Hooker. Between the 1950s and 1970s, the Rockefellers amassed a remarkable collection of Asian art. In 1979, they donated a significant portion of these works to the Asia Society, whose mission is to “promote greater knowledge of Asia in the United States.” The exhibition includes exquisitely carved Buddhist and Hindu sculptures charting the spread of spiritual traditions across Asia, alongside rare bronzes, ceramics, and metalwork from China, Korea, and Japan. With artifacts spanning over 2,000 years, this exhibition invites audiences to explore the depth and beauty of Asian religion, philosophy, and cultural heritage.

efore disposable napkins came along, handkerchiefs were the everyday essential we reached for without a thought. Once upon a time, they were even exchanged as tokens of love. But did you know they can also be quite eloquent in dance? Shen Yun transforms the humble handkerchief into a brilliant piece of artistic expression. Based in New York, Shen Yun Performing Arts is the world’s premier classical Chinese dance and music company. Its production highlights China’s rich cultural diversity through a series of short dance pieces performed in classical Chinese, folk, and ethnic styles, each reflecting the distinct heritage and landscapes of its people. Among these works is the 2017 piece Handkerchiefs in Flight, performed in the “yang ge” style— a traditional folk dance that originated during the Song Dynasty (960–1279) and later developed into many regional variations. Shandong yang ge, with its deft, carefree movements, comes from the northeastern province whose name literally means “east of the mountains.” It is home to people full of zest, generosity, and an appreciation for life’s simple joys. Onstage, brightly dressed girls enjoy a cheerful outing amid pink blossoms and swaying green willows,

THE BOOMERANG HANKY CATCH Shen Yun’s handkerchief dances have always been a fan favorite. Thunderous applause fills the theater every time a dancer performs the company’s signature move—the boomerang hanky catch. If you are daring enough to give it a try, the move is as follows: First, throw the handkerchief into the air like a boomerang. Then perform a walkover—a flip where you kick into a handstand with your legs in an upside-down split, land with one leg in a bridge, and

An Invitation Luck Can’t Resist Feng Shui Expert’s Pro Tips to Refresh Your Home By Astrid Wang Photography by CICO Books

pring is here, and the air is filled with a sense of renewal. What better time to freshen up your space? True growth begins from within, but the right environment can work wonders too. This tiny crash course in feng shui gives you a head start on all the good things life has to offer. Feng shui is the ancient Chinese art of arranging your living space to invite good fortune, harmony, and well-being. Think of it like building with Legos; each piece affects the balance of the whole. According to Guo Pu’s The Book of Burial from China’s Jin Dynasty over 1,700 years ago, “Qi [energy] disperses when carried by the wind, but is retained when it encounters water. … The ancients gathered it so that it would not scatter, and guided it to its resting place.” This practice became known as feng shui, literally the “art of wind and water.” Common taboos include “chuan men sha,” where the front door faces the back door. While great for ventilation, tradition says it may let your fortune breeze in the front and out the back. Another is “chuang ya liang,” placing your bed directly under an exposed beam. alking amid Fifth Avenue’s iconic landmarks and dazzling window displays, upscale boutiques, and rare artisanal delicacies, one can find nearly anything imaginable. Beneath a bright red awning, tucked among these luxuries, is one such delight: K. Minamoto, a shop offering wagashi, Japan’s most beloved confections. Wagashi originally referred to simple, traditional Japanese desserts crafted from fruits and other natural ingredients. Over centuries of innovation and refinement, these humble sweets have evolved into dainty, gourmet creations adored by connoisseurs around the world. Each one is a work of art. Hailing from Okayama and established in 1947, K. Minamoto, or Minamoto Kitchoan, is best known for its Nature Series, which celebrates the earth’s bounty through seasonal desserts made with fresh fruits. Its appeal extends far beyond Japan. The New York branch, opened in 1997, has also cultivated a loyal customer base. Manager Ryo

Terakado told Elite that a longtime patron once said enthusiastically, “This is one flavor I have to taste again before I go.” Each Lunar New Year, the company presents a zodiac-themed gift box filled with limited-edition winter treats. This year, celebrating the Year of the Horse, the box features Kinkan Mochi and Suikanshuku. Kinkan Mochi, a sweet-tart kumquat wrapped in white bean paste and encased in soft rice mochi, is a traditional Japanese New Year delicacy that symbolizes health and longevity. Suikanshuku is made from dried persimmon and sweet white bean paste that elevates the fruit’s natural sweetness. For creamy-dessert lovers, K. Minamoto’s new strawberry pudding is a must. Though simple in appearance, it is worlds apart from its processed counterparts. The marbled pudding combines sweet-andtart strawberry sauce with crushed jelly and mousse. Its soft, melt-in-your-mouth texture is perfect for children and elderly alike. Fans of edible art won’t want to miss Kingyo. Taking the idea of “eye candy” to a whole new level, the confection features goldfish sculpted from yokan bean jelly swimming gracefully within a dome of white grape-flavored jelly. Almost too beautiful to eat, it carries a New Year’s blessing: May your days ahead be as smooth and successful as fish in water. For something simpler yet equally satisfying to nibble on, Tokoyo—golden yuzu peel coated in sugar—will add a refreshing touch of zest and brightness to your day. Beyond the seasonal selections, Mr. Terakado recommends picking up the company’s all-time bestselling New Year Gift Box in the extra-large size. A true treasure trove of sweets, the assortment includes classic Japanese senbei cookies in matcha and cherry blossom flavors. The wooden box is beautifully wrapped in this year’s limited-edition furoshiki cloth. Each of K. Minamoto’s confections encapsulates the dedication and passion passed down through generations of Japanese wagashi artisans. Filled with goodwill and joy, these lavish gift boxes invite recipients to savor the finest flavors of Japan, even from oceans away.
K. Minamoto’s traditional confections celebrate Japanese people’s love for hospitality, nature, and the changing seasons.
