o we really need so many skin care products? Not necessarily. Minimalistic skin care is a growing beauty trend that suggests we should cut down our routine by using fewer products and choosing those with fewer ingredients.

Focus on the bare essentials to maintain healthy skin.

This approach is beneficial in many ways: it simplifies your routine, reduces the risk of irritation, and prevents overloading the skin with too many ingredients. It also saves both time and money while promoting sustainable and eco-friendly choices.

By using only essential products and ingredients, it is easier to identify sensitivities, reducing the potential for skin irritation or allergies. This is especially beneficial for people with sensitive skin.

Products with simpler formulations are generally gentler, as they tend to avoid unnecessary additives, fragrances, and chemicals.

Using fewer products also enables you to focus on your skin’s specific needs. Moreover, products with fewer ingredients typically have concentrated, higher-quality formulas that are more effective without disrupting your skin's natural balance. THE NO-SKIN-CARE APPROACH: GOOD OR BAD? Some influencers have suggested not applying anything at all to the skin, advocating for a "bare skin" approach. However, this advice may not be suitable for everyone. The idea works under ideal conditions—such as in a perfect climate with sufficient humidity, balanced hormones, and a nutritious diet—but this rarely is the case for most people.

For instance, in cold winters, indoor heating can dehydrate the skin. In such conditions, skipping skin care products could worsen dryness or irritation. To maintain healthy skin, it is essential to hydrate the skin and replenish lost moisture.

Different skin types also require different care.

Those with oily skin may only need light hydration to balance oil production, while individuals with dry or sensitive skin will require more-intensive care to protect and nourish the skin. Ignoring these needs can lead to problems. Therefore, skin care should always be tailored to individual needs, considering both external factors like climate and internal factors such as skin type or underlying conditions. It is important to recognize that most people’s skin requires some level of support.

WHAT PRODUCTS ARE ESSENTIAL? A minimalistic skin care routine includes a few key components. According to conventional wisdom, you should keep your skin clean, moisturized, and protected from the sun.

QING DYNASTY TREASURES The Pinnacle of Enamel Porcelain Craftsmanship 大清出品：百花齊放的彩瓷盛世

orcelain has long been a source of pride for the Chinese people. For centuries, its beauty captivated Western royals, solidifying its status as a global symbol of opulence and style. These delicate pieces were so highly prized that Europeans fondly referred to them as “weisses gold,” or white gold.

One of its most remarkable moments in diplomatic history occurred in 1717 when Augustus II, Elector of Saxony, became so enamored with Chinese porcelain that he built an entire palace to showcase his collection. This fascination was shared by his neighbor, Queen Sophia Dorothea of Prussia, who also amassed an impressive array of porcelains.

Intrigued by her collection and learning that King Frederick William I of Prussia valued tall, sturdy soldiers above all else, Augustus II saw an opportunity.

He proposed an unusual trade—600 elite cavalrymen in exchange for 127 exquisite pieces from the Prussian royal collection of Chinese porcelain.

During the height of the Qing Dynasty, “falangcai,” or foreign colors—named for its imported enamel pigments—reached unprecedented brilliance and is a testament to the nation’s artistic mastery. However, as the Qing Dynasty declined and the imperial system unraveled in the years after Emperor Qianlong’s reign, this once-thriving art gradually faded, losing much of its former glory.

HONING PERFECTION The art of enamel porcelain flourished under the patronage of three great emperors—Kangxi, Yongzheng, and Qianlong. Each vibrant piece, refined through continuous innovation to reach the pinnacle of beauty, reflects the cultural exchange between East and West. These porcelains are not only beautiful, but they also embody the Chinese emperors' ambitions for their nation.

In contrast to Western art, where individual artists are credited for their work, the making of overglaze enamel porcelain is a collective effort. From kiln tenders to mold designers and calligraphers inscribing the base—skilled artisans combined their talents to create some of the finest masterpieces ever made.

Before the Qing Dynasty, the Ming blue-and-white porcelain had already gained worldwide recognition.

While it became one of China’s most iconic designs, its color palette remained quite limited. It wasn’t until Emperor Kangxi introduced Western enameling techniques to the imperial workshops that artisans began experimenting with a broader range of colors and patterns.

Under the careful supervision of the emperors, each new porcelain design underwent a series of experiments. Through trial and error across three imperial reigns, the vessel’s shape, color, motifs, and ornamentation were refined to unmatched sophistication.

tional Palace Museum in Taiwan, in an exclusive interview for an arts journal. "His vision was far ahead of his time and very ambitious. Determined to surpass Western craftsmanship, he devoted a lot of effort to these experiments."

In the late 17th century, French missionary Je a n d e Fo n t a n e y described his experiences in China in a report to France, stating: The Kangxi Emperor is establishing a glass factory and requests skilled glassmakers capable of producing glass and crystal similar to that of Europe. He also needs a highly skilled enamel painter.

While recruiting Western talents, the emperor commissioned workshops to study various manufacturing techniques. He repurposed discarded porcelain from previous dynasties for experimental painting. Foreign missionaries and court painters, such as Giuseppe Castiglione, were invited to participate in these projects.

During Kangxi’s reign, all enamel pigments were imported. It wasn’t until the later years of his rule (circa 1718) that these experiments saw widespread success. By then, the imperial workshops were able to produce exquisite porcelain vessels adorned with enamel designs in a rainbow of colors. These hues ranged from pink, purple, blue, green, to even black.

Yellow, however, symbolized imperial rule and was reserved strictly for the royal family.

These vessels typically featured floral and bird motifs, though some also had human figures and geometric designs. According to historical records,

the emperor had a keen interest in Western mathematical theories and requested that these shapes be incorporated.

When Kangxi’s son, Emperor Yongzheng, ascended the throne in 1722, he continued to innovate and experiment with the craft. By the sixth year of his reign (1728), China had mastered the production of enamel pigments and was no longer reliant on imported materials.

Yongzheng favored porcelain designs that blended the four quintessential Chinese arts—poetry, calligraphy, painting, and seal carving. As a result, many pieces from this period featured poetic inscriptions—often verses from The Complete Tang Poems, a collection commissioned by Kangxi—along with complementary artwork on the opposite side.

He took a particular interest in famille rose, or fencai, a technique defined by soft, pastel hues created through blending pigments into white porcelain. This method contrasts with falangcai, which is known for its vibrant, bold colors.

Porcelain vessels from this period were praised by critics for their exquisite elegance. The emperor’s generous rewards for outstanding craftsmanship motivated the artisans to perfect their technique and pour their very best into each piece.

The most highly prized vessels were those with a pure white porcelain base to highlight the artisans’ exquisite brushwork. Traditional Chinese floral and bird painting techniques, such as mogu (applying color without outlines) and gongbi (meticulous brushstrokes), were frequently utilized.

Qing Dynasty writer Chen Liu wrote in Tao Ya, a compendium discussing the art and appreciation of ceramics: “Among famille rose porcelain, those produced during Yongzheng’s reign are the most beautiful—unprecedented in history and unmatched thereafter. It is dazzlingly vibrant and exquisitely crafted."

By the time Qianlong took the throne, enamel porcelain craftsmanship had been firmly established, and the emperor shifted his focus to innovative designs.

A relentless perfectionist, Qianlong was far less generous with rewards than his father. His imperial kiln supervisor, Tang Ying, was under constant strain to meet the emperor’s exacting demands.

The meticulous emperor created new designs with a fervor and held his workshops to strict production standards. In 1737, Emperor Qianlong issued a decree stating: "Older porcelain designs should continue to be produced alongside the new. The text on each plate, bowl, cup, and saucer must be written in 'seal script' and be neat and legible."

Later, critics dubbed the new porcelain style of his reign “Jinshang Tianhua,” which literally translates to "adding flowers to the brocade," or “adding brilliance to perfection.” This style involved

creating a brocade-like background on the porcelain, then layering it with floral motifs to form a multidimensional design.

Over time, even more ingenious creations emerged, such as the revolving vase—a multi-layered vessel featuring openwork. These intricate pieces are stark contrasts to the simple elegance of Yongzheng-era porcelain.

Furthermore, the Qianlong period saw a growing emphasis on collecting and preserving art. Even the cases used to store porcelain were meticulously crafted.

The emperor personally selected nanmu, a prized wood known for its durability and resistance to moisture,

A DEDICATED CRAFTSMAN While the emperors undoubtedly led the advancement of enamel porcelain craftsmanship, their vision could not have been realized without the dedication of their staff. Among them was Tang Ying, who entered imperial service under Kangxi and served three emperors over his lifetime. His contributions were instrumental in ushering in the golden age of Qing porcelain.

Born into servitude in the imperial household, Tang Ying reflected on his early years in his autobiography: “At 16, I entered the inner court and attended to my duties with unwavering diligence. Through dust and mud, rain and wind, I traveled across mountains and rivers. From the eastern and western shores of the Yangtze to the desolate northern deserts—never once did I pause to rest.”

Determined to master the art and secret of porcelain-making, he spent three years living and working alongside skilled artisans. During this time, he withdrew from all social gatherings and leisure activities, devoting himself solely to perfecting the craft.

According to Qing Shi Gao, a historical account of the Qing Dynasty, Tang Ying served as the imperial kiln supervisor longer than any of his predecessors. He honed the production technique through a hands-on approach and managed the imperial funds with precision. While in office, he also documented the entire creative process of the Qing porcelain—detailing everything from financial expenditures to innovative breakthroughs.

In 1743, there was a budget cut, yet Qianlong’s high standards remained unchanged. Though this made the kiln supervisor’s daily tasks very difficult, Tang Ying did not complain. By December, the imperial kiln of Jingdezhen had delivered 5,045 pieces of porcelain for imperial use and 170 decorative vessels. The production tripled from the previous year

and continued to grow annually. Tang Ying even paid out of pocket to ensure the completion of more costly commissions.

When Emperor Qianlong took the throne, Tang Ying was 54 years old and entering the most demanding period of his career. This challenge likely sparked his genius, pushing him to create masterpieces of remarkable complexity. He only requested retirement at 74 and passed away later that same year.

REBIRTH BY FIRE Even the finest porcelain starts as humble clay. Transformed by the intense heat of the kiln, its success or failure is revealed only when the mold is opened. Once formed, each piece is meticulously painted and fired again, sealing in the vibrant colors.

Since the Ming Dynasty, despite the Silk Road’s expansion, high transport costs limited Chinese porcelain to Western royals and aristocrats. In fact, the finest imperial pieces were produced in such limited quantities that they were nearly impossible to obtain outside the palace without an imperial gift.

At present-day antique auctions, a revolving vase from the Qianlong period can fetch over 300 million HKD, while a Kangxi-era small pink ceramic bowl is sold at over 200 million HKD. These staggering price tags reflect both the rarity of these pieces and the profound cultural and historical values they hold.

tepping into the New York showroom of Kathy Kuo Home feels like entering a serene oasis, where the city's buzz fades, and the warmth of home takes over. A subtle, delicate fragrance lingers in the air, setting the tone for what’s to come. Bathed in soft, earthy hues, the space doesn’t shout for attention. It whispers, beckoning you to come closer, to feel, and to connect with every detail.

The eponymous home-furnishing company was founded in 2012 by Kathy Kuo, an award-winning, Taiwanese-born interior designer who made her mark in the world of e-commerce. In the 10 years following her graduation from Rhode Island School of Design, Kuo honed her skill in the industry. She also co-hosted the reality TV series Knock First and served as a judge on Rowhouse Showdown.

“I am a true creative—my brain is always going a mile a minute with new ideas around business and design,” Kuo said to ELITE. “I’m always searching for joy and beauty in this world.”

Last November, she reached a major milestone by opening a showroom in Tribeca—one of Manhattan’s most-coveted neighborhoods. “It has always been a dream to have a physical space downtown where we can welcome in anyone who wants to learn more about us and sit on our super comfy sofas in real life,” she shared.

Deeply passionate about product and interior design, Kuo embraced the calling with heart and purpose. For her, the best part of the job lies in creating spaces that are “gracious, soulful and enduring.” It’s 22│

about working closely with clients to help them find joy and a sense of sanctuary in the places they call home.

“Interior design is about more than just the objects in the room—it’s about setting them in harmony with one another,” she said. “[It] has this really special personal element that infuses every project with meaning.”

A VISION BORN OF GRIT Kuo’s journey into entrepreneurship is closely tied to her personality. Due to her father’s job, she moved frequently in her formative years, attending schools in various countries and cities. This lifestyle cultivated her ability to adapt quickly to different circumstances and adjust to cultural differences between the East and West.

Her schooling in Asia was very different from her experience in American schools, she said.

Despite these differences, Kuo became class president and learned to lead a large classroom.

These early experiences helped her recognize the importance of teamwork and laid a strong foundation for the leadership skills she would later bring into her brand.

When her career took off in 2012, the global economy was still recovering from the Great Recession. In 2008, Kuo was laid off from the design firm where she worked. Undeterred, she took matters into her own hands and launched Kathy Kuo Home (KKH). In a full-circle moment, the very boss who once let her go is now a vendor for KKH. A pivotal point for Kuo was when she noticed a disconnect between high-end furniture suppliers and the consumer market. Her vision was to build a trustworthy platform that makes designer furniture accessible for everyone. “[I] noticed gaps in the marketplace, especially when it came to luxury and what people were looking to spend on during a really unprecedented economic time,” Kuo said. “Initially, KKH was just me taking client orders over the phone because people knew I had relationships with vendors and that I had the expertise to advise on high-end furniture.”

The business soon expanded into e-commerce, and today, it boasts a team of over a hundred and generates multimillion dollars in annual revenue.

Kuo has since emerged as one of the top female entrepreneurs in the industry.

ROOTED IN FAMILY VALUES Though an entrepreneur’s life comes with its fair share of challenges and setbacks, her family’s support played a vital role in Kuo’s ability to problem-solve and achieve the success she enjoys today. Her heart is filled with gratitude. Unlike the often-rigid educational expectations common among Asian parents, hers took a very hands-off approach—giving her the freedom to explore.

“I remember my mom always said to me, ‘I really don’t care what you want to do in life, whether or not you want to be a hairdresser or a plumber, so long as you strive to be the absolute best in it.’ I’ve taken that very much to heart.” Kuo said.

“I always say that if you do what you love, it never really feels like work. … You’ll spend an inordinate amount of time wanting to pursue that thing.

As a result, you will likely become really good at it and provide value for other people.”

EMBRACING THE MOMENT Kuo gave birth to her first child the same year she founded KKH. While a fulfilling career is deeply important to her, she’s clear about where her priorities lie and what she wants out of life.

Many women entrepreneurs struggle to balance career and motherhood, but Kuo welcomes these chaotic and sometimes mundane moments of life: “Being a business owner and a working mother is more about setting different priorities at different moments, rather than balance.”

“Balance isn’t always possible, and I’m straightforward with my kids and with my team at work about this,” she explained. “I also love that I can set an example for my kids of what it looks like to be passionate about your career.”

For those who may be having a hard time juggling career and parenthood, Kuo’s advice to them

would be to recognize that there’s no one-size-fitsall solution.

“Know that there will be difficult moments, but there will also be joyful ones—both at work and at home,” she said. “Try to be present in whatever you’re doing rather than try to constantly multitask. Also have frank conversations with your kids about what your work means to you and why it’s important to take our responsibilities seriously and hold ourselves accountable.”

As a mother, Kuo found every snippet of life to be a gift. Spending time with her children and cheering them on at soccer games fills her heart with joy. In hard times, these are the memories that fuel her with energy and motivation.

LESSONS IN ENTREPRENEURSHIP In the early stages of building her company, Kuo admitted to making a number of less-than-prudent decisions and often feeling out of her league.

Nevertheless, she never views these missteps with regret. Instead, she sees them as valuable lessons that have propelled her forward.

Reflecting on a few early hiring mistakes, Kuo said the experience shaped her, made her sharper, and she has only improved since.

“At the time, they felt like real setbacks. ome might say she got carried away. Danielle Dall’Armi Hahn just wanted to beautify her family’s new home in the California coastal foothills near Santa Barbara. Nearly three and a half decades later, there are 40,000 rose bushes—and counting—at Rose Story Farm.

“Is it time to stop? No, never. If I had more land, I’d plant more,” Ms. Hahn declared, expressing mock indignation at the idea that one could ever have too many roses. “In fact, right now I’m trying to figure out a spot [where] I can add a couple hundred tree roses and create a rose maze.”

Most people would stop far short of 40,000 plants, but in every other respect, Ms. Hahn’s affection is about as universal as it gets in the world of horticulture. Roses are the most beloved garden plant on the planet.

Rose Story Farm is now a thriving, family-run business, one of the leading cut-rose purveyors in the United States, selling hundreds of thousands of stems of its field-grown blooms a year. Not that Ms. Hahn and her husband, Bill, ever meant to achieve that, exactly. All they wanted was a place in the country.

SCENT MEMORIES Perched on the lower flanks of the 4,000-foot Santa Ynez Mountains, overlooking the vast azure Pacific southward, with California’s glorious oak-clad foothills behind, Rose Story Farm seems a bucolically ideal setting for an empire of roses. And Ms. Hahn is herself as elegant as the plants she grows.

Though he had been born in California in 1922, the family returned to Italy a few years later, only to be forced to come back to the United States just a few years after that. And it was at her grandparents’ home long ago that a very young Ms. Hahn had a life-changing experience.

Scent is considered by physiologists the most evocative of all senses: Catch a hint of the perfume a longago love used to wear, and you are instantly drawn back years in recollection. And who among human adults does not hold fast to the memory of a distinct childhood event that catalyzed something much later in life?

So it was for Ms. Hahn, who recalls vividly the day in her grandmother’s garden when she was 6 years old and first encountered a sensational, treasured California rose—Sutter’s Gold.

“It has such a delightful fragrance, such a rich color, and every bloom is different,” Ms. Hahn rhapsodized, decades later. A family photo vividly documents that childhood discovery—her as a young girl, flaxen hair in braids, shining in the sun, leaning over to catch the scent of her grandmother’s rose. The photo is also an exquisite depiction of the transcendent appeal of roses in human life.

Ms. Hahn has a few Sutter’s Gold bushes now, but the flowers do not sell well for bouquets: “Yellow isn’t a very popular color in the retail market, and customers don’t like the fact the flowers aren’t all uniform,” she explained.

The epiphany she experienced in her grandmother’s garden meant that roses are what came first to mind when she and Bill bought their 15acre farm in January 1990. Bill’s family background also includes a rosarian grandmother, gardens, and farms, most notably a hay-and-cattle operation near Ellensburg, Washington. The idea of relocating to a more rural setting from the monied coastal enclave of Montecito drew them to their current property when their two boys were young.

“We wanted to raise our kids in a rural environment, not in a place where their schoolmates wondered why they weren’t going to Courchevel for spring break,” Ms. Hahn said. Their two boys spent their youth roaming the foothills, riding horses, doing farm chores, and learning how to make their way in the world. Now, one son is an oncologist, and the other is an opera singer who splits his time between Europe and America.

A BUSINESS BLOOMS At first, the Hahns had no intention of turning their new home’s rose garden, however lavish, into a business. Both had well-paying careers—he is a gastroenterologist, and she had been an event designer in the film industry after running a small chain of retail boutiques. But their new property brought daunting cash flow requirements, including four cottages along with the 10-bedroom 1880s main house. They boosted their income by renting out the cottages, including one to a friend who was a floral designer. That friend was enchanted with Ms. Hahn’s roses and began using them himself.

“I thought to myself, ‘If he likes them so much, why wouldn’t lots of other people?’” she recalled.

Ms. Hahn has also written a lusciously illustrated book about her passion: The Color of Roses: A Curated Spectrum of 300 Blooms (2023).

The farm is not open to the public for walk-in visits, but the Hahns once hosted a philanthropic event in which their historic, 10-bedroom house was comprehensively and gloriously decorated with roses by different designers—roses everywhere, literally.

“There were even roses spilling out of the dishwasher in the kitchen,” Ms. Hahn said. “Sounds wacky, but it was gorgeous. And this is what I had dreamed of all those years ago: a house filled with roses from our own garden, floor-to-ceiling in every room.”

And what is the meaning of all this beauty and growth?

Hundreds of roses turned into thousands, then tens of thousands. One early adventure came when they ordered 10,000 roses at once. The plants arrived almost two months earlier than the Hahns expected.

“Lady, we ship the roses when they are ready, not when you’re ready,” the growers told Ms. Hahn. She and her husband had to scramble to get them in the ground, enlisting 40 friends, one shovel apiece, to dig holes and place the plants. “It was like a Laurel and Hardy movie,” Ms. Hahn said.

As with any nascent business, mistakes turned into learning experiences. Of the initial five varieties they decided to grow commercially, one failed entirely in their climate, and one only bloomed once a year.

“Hard to keep cash flow up if you only have flowers for a month,” Ms. Hahn said, laughing.

Tang Dynasty Training Ground One of the greatest rulers in Chinese history, Emperor Tang Taizong was famous for his military prowess.

The seventh-century emperor was instrumental in establishing the mighty Tang Dynasty (618–907) and often fought in the vanguard alongside his soldiers.

The music begins with a horn call, summoning soldiers to the training grounds. Martial rhythms from the strings and timpani capture the troops’ discipline and gallantry. In the middle section, a passionate pipa solo represents the mighty emperor training a group of elite warriors. As the intensity builds, the brass and percussion propel the orchestra to a dramatic finish.

This composition is both a tribute to Tang Taizong’s visionary leadership and a celebration of the heroic spirit and unstoppable strength of his army.

A Lakefront Retreat Design That Helps Us Reconnect With Nature 返璞歸真 湖畔之宅

rom the moment designer Daniel Joseph Chenin set foot in Harrison, Idaho, he knew he was onto something special. Nestled along the shores of Lake Coeur d'Alene, this charming resort town is a peaceful escape from the rush of city life.

With its northern location, Harrison boasts mild summers, perfect for cyclists and hikers seeking to explore the town’s stunning 73-mile trail through untouched wilderness. Even in the depths of winter, the snow-covered forests and frozen lakes offer plenty of opportunities for snowshoeing and ice fishing.

Year-round, this quaint little town is a living postcard, beckoning visitors to unplug and reconnect with nature.

Tasked by a long-time client to create a house of dreams on the banks of Lake Coeur d’Alene, Chenin partnered with Hart Howerton, a renowned New York architecture firm celebrated for its sustainable and site-sensitive designs. Together, their expertise gave rise to The Buckrail, a sophisticated lakefront retreat that balances contemporary luxury with the raw, untamed beauty of its mountainous surroundings.

Chenin selected the home’s light fixtures and furniture for their simplicity and functionality.

To balance the home’s utilitarian elements, Chenin incorporated rich, luxurious materials throughout, infusing the space with warmth and comfort.

A RUSTIC GETAWAY Chenin’s client envisioned a home that is deeply connected to nature—blending warmth, welcome, and luxury in equal measure.

Nevertheless, building a home on rugged terrain comes with its share of logistical and design challenges. Given Idaho’s harsh winters, it was essential to create a residence that’s not only aesthetically pleasing, but also resilient, using smart, durable materials that can withstand the elements. Instead of resisting the elements, the designers embraced them.

“The home is clad in reclaimed wood, with knobby imperfections that give it a rough-and-ready exterior that blends into the natural context,” Chenin explained. “It also responds to the harsh off-season climate by being fitted with a metal roof and Corten steel garage doors for much-needed protection against ice and heavy snow.”

IN SYNC WITH NATURE To complement the home’s rugged exterior, Chenin chose a soothing palette of soft, earthy tones for the rooms and incorporated floor-to-ceiling windows to further blur the boundary between indoors and outside, filling the space with natural light and warmth.

He also permeated the home with shapes and textures drawn from nature.

“Many of the finishes and details in this project ref lect elements found in the surrounding landscape,” Chenin said. From exposed wood beams and nature-inspired artwork, to intricate rug patterns that mimic fallen leaves on the forest floor, every element echoes the wilderness just beyond the walls.

His thoughtful use of mixed materials—plush rugs, supple leather, rawhides, and natural mediums like iron, steel, marble, and wood—adds both depth and variety to the design. To ensure the house ages gracefully, Chenin selected unlacquered bronze handles and hardware throughout. Over time, the metal will develop a rich patina through touch and exposure, giving the house a rustic flair.

When describing The Buckrail, Chenin said, “It’s a typical getaway house in terms of its ruggedness, robustness, and simplicity. Our challenge was to carry those features into the interior while softening and refining the edges.”

BEAUTY IN SIMPLICITY In contrast to the home's multitude of subtle yet elegant details, its layout is refreshingly simple and functional. “Whenever possible, creating boundaries between different aspects of your life can help to leave worries and anxieties behind when you transition from one part of your life to another,” she said.

Working from your bed blurs that line between rest and productivity, making it harder to sleep. Conversely, it can also tempt you to procrastinate during work hours. If you must work in the room, create a dedicated office corner away from your bed to tell your brain, “We’re in work mode now.”

Bright, warm colors like reds, oranges, and yellows fuel energy and happiness, while cool, subdued shades such as blues, greens, and purples encourage calm.

When it comes to creating a restful bedroom, experts agree that blue is the best choice. “Some colors may evoke relaxation, while others stimulate your mind and make you more awake,” said sleep psychologist Sue Peacock in an interview with Apartment Therapy. Research shows that all shades of blue are linked to the feeling of tranquility and can help lower heart rate and respiration, making it ideal for sleep.

If blue isn’t your thing, don’t worry, there are plenty of other options. Color expert Amy Wax recommends earthy tones for a cozy, welcoming feel. Blush rose hues, in particular, strike the perfect balance between neutral warmth and freshness. They help to brighten the space without making it feel overwhelming. DREAM SHEETS When it comes to bedding, cotton is the most popular fabric due to its durability, breathability, and wide price range. Among all types of cotton, Egyptian and Supima are the premium options. But if you’re pursuing a very silky feeling, real silk is your choice. A nice mulberry-silk set comes at a higher price, but it’s a worthwhile investment for luxurious comfort.

Silk contains sericin, a protein that helps your skin and hair retain their natural moisture. Moreover, its soft texture reduces friction and allows your hair to glide over the pillows. fter walking a short section of Spain’s famous pilgrimage trail, I went immediately into withdrawal. I had completed just less than 100 miles, but when I returned home to the infinite distraction that is modern life—the calls, emails, chores, social commitments, and multitasking at work and home, with alerts and notifications falling like digital hail—I realized how quiet my mind had been during those 10 days.

The saying goes, “It is solved by walking”—“solvitur ambulando” in Latin. Everything is reduced to a rhythm of steps; to greeting fellow pilgrims and locals who usually smile and call out, “Buen Camino!”; the meditation of repetitive motion—going forward, following a trail of yellow arrows and scallop shells through forests, fields, vineyards, and villages along packed dirt, cowpaths, and cobblestones—and pausing for vast views from hilltops and church steeples, resting alongside a babbling creek or on a medieval stone bridge or under a tree drooping with fresh figs.

There’s beauty and peace in simplicity, and this journey felt otherworldly, if not time-transcendent. The Camino provides.

On a 2019 road trip through northern Spain, I spent a few days in Santiago de Compostela, and in the early morning, I went to the plaza in front of the 13th-century cathedral of St. James (Santiago), the namesake of the pilgrimage. I saw a lone hiker, disheveled and weary, enter the square. He stood there in disbelief. He let his backpack slip from his shoulders and slide down his arms to the stones. Then he too sank to the ground, lay on his back, and rested his head. His body shook almost indiscernibly, and I couldn’t tell if he was laughing or sobbing gently.

Perhaps it was a bit of both. Throughout the day, various pilgrims appeared and celebrated in songs, sighs, cries, or silence. All of them looked emotionally overwhelmed. So began my mission to get on the Camino.

THE LEGEND In 813, a Spanish hermit named Pelayo had visions in a field in northern Spain. Following the path of a star, he found what he believed to be the bones of St. James the Greater, the apostle who was assigned to spread the Christian gospel in Spain. He had returned to 52│

Jerusalem, where Herod Agrippa had him beheaded and fed to the dogs. But the story says his followers stole away with the remains, put them in a boat, and set it adrift in the Mediterranean. An angel guided it to northern Spain along the Atlantic Coast, where it sank just offshore. His body was washed up, covered in scallop shells, and his followers there buried him in a field, where the grave was forgotten. Upon the revelation of Pelayo’s discovery, a church was built to hold the holy relics. Pilgrimages soon began.

But the Black Death cast a shadow over Europe, and interest in the pilgrimage died off until the late 20th century. In the 1980s, stories about St. James re-emerged, and in 1993, four of the Routes of Santiago de Compostela were listed on the UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites. In 2010, the film The Way, starring Martin Sheen as a father retracing his dead son’s steps along the Camino, led to an explosive number of travelers. People from all walks of life and from all over the world sought to make the pilgrimage.

To obtain the Compostela, the official certificate of completion, one needs to have walked at least the last 100 kilometers (62 miles) and obtained stamps in a camino passport to verify that one has walked the journey. About 2,000 pilgrims per day reach the cathedral in Santiago de Compostela during the height of the summer season, while about 1,000 do so in the entire month of January. Portions of the trail in the mountains, especially in the Pyrenees, are closed down in the winter because of the danger of heavy snowfall.

Just as all roads lead to Rome, multiple caminos arrive at Santiago from all directions—the Portugal Route, the Northern Route, and the Via de la Plata, to name a few popular paths. When I set out for the Camino, I opted for the Camino Francés, or the French Way, much as roughly 60 percent of pilgrims do.

muttered to myself, “ofifoto.” Thanks to recommendations, I had a pair of HOKA trail running shoes, not hiking boots, and Darn Tough merino wool blend socks. I didn’t get a single blister.

Some love the physical challenge. A thousand years ago, some pilgrims believed in the mortification of the f lesh—whether through abstinence, fasting, or even self-flagellation—as a sacrifice to repent for sins.

On my journey, I passed an Italian pilgrim rolling an empty wheelchair. His mother had intended to join him on the way but was now bedridden with a health issue; he had brought the wheelchair in her honor.

Everyone had their reason for undertaking the journey—and for doing it in their own particular fashion. This ranged from backpackers who winged it each day, hitting up dorm-room-style hostels as they found them, to pilgrims with limited vacation time who left nothing to chance. They scheduled everything in advance, reserving private rooms in nicer hotels or even using a guided service. Ages ranged from kids with their parents to experienced folks looking toward the century mark. Some walked only a short distance. Beth Jusino, author of Walking to the End of the World: A Thousand Miles on the Camino De Santiago, started out in France and, in the course of her 79-day journey, wore through three pairs of shoes, making up plans as she and her husband went.

JUST THE WALKING Arizona-born Alex Chang came to Spain for a job.

When he decided to move back to the States, some time on the Camino was his gift to himself and a farewell to Spain—or so he thought. He fell in love with it and became a guide. After noticing that many travelers would have trouble doing a thru-hike, he founded Fresco Tours.

Fresco Tours breaks the Camino into “chapters,” and my journey began with Chapter 1 on the Camino Francés starting at Spain’s border with France. I met with my group of five other pilgrims in Pamplona, Spain, and two guides drove us up into the Pyrenees in the afternoon to start with three miles through a magnificent forest trail with overlooks to the surrounding mountains.

We stayed the first night in a hotel that was once a clergy dormitory and attended a Pilgrims’ Mass for a blessing. Each day, our guides briefed us before each segment about checkpoints, lunch locations, 56│

particular challenges, and noteworthy historical sites and gave us a profile of the day’s 8 to 14 miles of walking and its elevation changes. When we asked if it was flat or not, our Basque guide Jon liked to say, “It’s as flat as it can be.” (Which is to say, not at all when the route crosses a mountain!)

Other than the agreed-upon picnic lunch and end points, everyone moved at their own pace. At day’s end, the guides took us to the hotel and out for dinner. In addition to the advantage of only having to do the walking and not deal with logistics, the tour provided a van to and from the trail, meaning we could stay two or three nights in the same hotel, returning the next day to where we had left off. That meant less packing and repacking, and more time for washed clothes to dry.

THE TRUE PILGRIM? Trail snobs may insist that authenticity requires doing it all yourself. But Camino walkers do it their way, for their reasons, and according to their abilities.

“You get people who come and are doing it, and they are self-proclaimed ‘doing it the right way,’” Mr. Chang said. “I get people who call me and say, ‘Alex, I did the backpack, hostel thing 40 years ago. I’d like to have my own bathroom and a gin and tonic when I’m done.’”

Is it becoming too touristy? Mr. Chang shook his head.

“The Camino is just coming full circle. These little towns and villages you are walking through started to form to provide services for the pilgrims 1,000 years ago. Everybody needed a place to stay. Everybody needed a place to eat. Somebody needed a cobbler or an ironsmith,” Mr. Chang said.

While there are other routes, the Camino Francés is popular for good reasons.

“For me, it ticks so many different boxes,” he said.

“You’ve got the spiritual, religious element, the history, you’ve got the architecture, the natural beauty, the legends, the food.”

Along the trail, we stopped at a small tavern for lunch and were served thick, smoky, grilled entrecôte (similar to ribeye), some of the best meat I’ve ever tasted. It was even better than a very reputable steak restaurant we later enjoyed in the town of Viana. I visited wineries, rang the bell of a small church on a hill, soaked my tired feet in a chilly river in Zubiri, and passed among the Rioja’s vineyards. As I walked

up the cobblestone road to Pamplona’s historic city gate, my feet graced the same stones a pilgrim trod a millennium ago.

My chapter ended in Logroño in Rioja Province. I did not have two months to complete the route, unfortunately, and those who aren’t retired or on a gap year may also have time constraints. But don’t let that stop you.

As I awaited my f light home in Pamplona, I felt that ache and the longing to continue. I needed to collapse on those cathedral steps and laugh or cry. This camino was not over. It was only paused.

Months later, Mr. Chang sent me an email: “Here’s to a healthy and happy 2024—hope to see you back on the Camino—you’ve got unfinished business!”

ood is “your most powerful tool to resist cognitive decline with age,” says Annie Fenn, a doctor-turned-cooking-instructor. Throughout her 20 years as an obstetrician-gynecologist, Dr. Fenn began to notice cognitive decline in an increasing number of her patients, as well as her local community. When her mother was diagnosed with an early form of Alzheimer’s disease known as mild cognitive impairment (MCI) in 2015, she decided to focus on helping others improve their brain health.

Dr. Fenn founded the Brain Health Kitchen cooking school, teaching people across the country and abroad how to prepare meals to reduce Alzheimer's risk. In 2023, she published the cookbook The Brain Health Kitchen. “Once people begin to understand the connection between what they eat and how the brain ages, there’s a shift that happens,” she said.

“People begin to look at everything they eat through a lens of brain health.”

Dr. Fenn shared about her own daily diet, brainhealthier cooking habits, and the importance of looking at the bigger picture.

What do you typically eat in a day?

Dr. Annie Fenn: I always eat a serving [1/2 cup] of berries, even in the winter. Berries are their own brain-healthy food group. I always try to work them in, whether with my yogurt, oatmeal, or granola, or even just grab a handful as a snack. I also drink

black coffee because it has hundreds of different antioxidants, but it’s one beverage that is usually ruined by adding sugar or sketchy dairy products. I also have a salad every single day with about 2 cups of greens. Maybe that’s for lunch or dinner or stirred into a sauce, or maybe even sautéed with eggs.

What kinds of neuroprotective foods should we be incorporating into our diets?

Dr. Fenn: I think that people should begin to move away from the concept of superfoods and think more in terms of food groups since that is where all the data is pointing. Let’s look at what is called brain-protective dietary patterns, instead of specific foods—patterns in eating based on food groups.

For example, the Mediterranean diet as well as the MIND diet—which is where we derive some of the best research we have on this topic—define certain food groups that are healthier for people to consume. [MIND stands for the Mediterranean-DASH intervention for neurodegenerative delay; DASH stands for dietary approaches to stop hypertension.]

So, for my book The Brain Health Kitchen, I use the MIND diet as a template since there is a 53 percent reduction in the risk of developing Alzheimer’s by following it.

A lot of what we’re learning about brain-health nutrition comes from what we learn about the gut.

It’s really important for a brain-healthy diet to draw from a variety of different food groups, since we know that helps cultivate a healthy gut biome. Eating a variety of foods is great, and eating what you enjoy is really important, too.

This seems like a long-term eating plan that people can ease into and eventually make part of their lifestyles.

Dr. Fenn: Exactly. Food is such a great way in for people who want to access better health. Once people start doing one brain-healthy habit, such as eating healthy food, they tend to engage in other healthy habits, like exercise.

Within brain-healthy food groups, reach for darker leafy greens—they’re the most nutrient-dense—and darker berries—which have more memory-boosting anthocyanins.

3.Take It Low and Slow. Fish and seafood are a great source of omega-3 fatty acids, essential for brain health, but searing, frying, or grilling over direct high heat can destroy those delicate nutrients.

Opt for gentler cooking methods, which are better for the brain, such as braising, slow-roasting on a sheet pan, or grilling on a cedar plank or in a grill basket.

I can’t easily make myself smarter, physically gifted, or better looking—but changing my mind’s inner dialogue is well within my grasp, and that alone can lead to amazing positive changes in my life.

In my freshman year of high school, the thought of running a mile was like imagining myself not eating for an entire day. While I knew it was possible, it sounded grossly uncomfortable and was not something I’d choose to do.

A year later, though, I found myself on the cross-country team running miles each day. After another year, I was jogging up to 10 miles at a time, and running had become an integral part of my identity.

Sure, I probably never had the talent to be an Olympic runner—that kind of outcome requires a truly special gift. But most of us aren’t aiming for elite-level performance in our lives. SELF-TALK FOR POSITIVE CHANGE ‘I Can Do Hard Things’ Believing you can stick with a difficult task and that it won’t be overwhelming is a powerful psychological advantage. Some people think they can do hard things, but they don’t really have any evidence in mind, and so they’re only believing in a generality.

For this to work, you have to have a particular experience of achievement in mind and remind yourself that you’ve done it once and you can do it again.

The more often you accomplish hard things, the more effective this script will become.

‘I’ll Get Started Today’ For much of my life, I’ve been the “I’ll get started tomorrow” kind of guy. Though just a beat away from “I’ll get started today,” it’s enough to send you down a path of never-ending tomorrows. In my experience, tomorrow never arrives, because when you say tomorrow, you can always push it back just one more tomorrow.

One of the more shocking personal discoveries I’ve made is how long I can push back doing things without ever realizing my own self-deception. The best counterattack is to start today and make that your life’s mantra.

Not that it’s OK to be wrong, although that’s true, too. What I mean is that a “good enough” plan with great execution is far better than a “perfect” plan that never materializes.
