Remembering Arnold Palmer

The King – Then, Now & Always

Tucked away in the small town of Latrobe, PA, just miles outside of the Philadelphia Section, a man by the name of Arnold Palmer emerged from the woodworks; a man with values of hard work and good morals. His father, Deacon Palmer, a PGA Head Professional at Latrobe Country Club, taught Palmer many of life’s greatest lessons.

He showed him how to grip a club – and insisted that he never change it, and Palmer listened.

Palmer listened to so many, always taking time for media, fans and family alike. He recorded 62 PGA Tour wins, including 7 major titles. However, it is perhaps the actions off the course that earned him the nickname, “The King.”

Arnold Palmer was the same man whether he played great or not so great, always appreciating his fans and wearing that signature smile. The people he played with describe him as one of the greatest, as do the people who watched and admired him.

Palmer changed the way people viewed the game of golf, both figuratively and literally. People saw it as a game of fun with Arnold; that a hardworking man could go out and compete on a high level with an attitude of excitement and love for the game.

The Golf Channel was Arnold’s making as well. He created a 24-hour station devoted to showcasing the game he loved so dearly so that others could relish that same passion for the game.

People today can take away many lessons from Mr. Palmer, including his passion for the game, his willingness to give to others and his attitude toward life – to name a short few of countless.

But, hopefully as people continue to watch the game of golf, cheer on their favorite players and indulge in a refreshing can of Arnold Palmer, they too can appreciate what one man has meant to an entire sport. Maybe even a man bigger than the game itself.

And to say he had a huge impact on golf is an understatement.

After all, he was then, is now and will always be, “The King.”

Remembering Arnold Palmer

Given his talents on the course, Palmer put his fame to good use off the course with his philanthropic efforts, allowing others to benefit from his success. He gave golf a new image, showing that the game’s wealth could be spread throughout the world – showing that the game’s joy could be spread throughout the world as well.

A Rules of Golf Reminder: Rule 13—Part2

A Rules of Golf Reminder: Rule 13—Ball Played As It Lies (Part 2; 13-3 & 13-4) Rule 13—Ball Played As It Lies is one of the most critical rules in golf. Whether a player knows it or not this rule comes into play on just about every shot that is taken during a round of golf. Part two of this series will explore Rules 13-3 and 13-4. Click here to view Part One. What is Rule 13-3 All About: Rule 13-3 talks about building a stance. Building a stance means that a player cannot stand on anything or adjust the conditions of the ground that they will be standing on to take their stance. For example, a player cannot knock sand of the side of a bunker to get a more level stance for a bunker shot.

What is Rule 13-4 All About: Rule 13-4 describes actions that a player cannot make in a hazard. A hazard is any water hazard or bunker on the course. The rule says a player cannot test the condition of the hazard that the ball lies in or any similar hazard, touch the ground in hazard or water in a water hazard with their hand or club and touch or move any loose impediments lying in or touching the hazard.

The Rule provides a few exceptions to these prohibited actions. For example, there is no penalty if a player touches the ground while removing a movable obstruction such as a rake in a bunker. In addition, a player may rake the sand in a bunker provided it is for the sole purpose of caring for the course and not to test the conditions in a hazard.

Finally, the rule ends with a note saying that a player may touch, with a club or otherwise any obstruction, construction declared an integral part of the course or any grass, bush, tree or other growing thing. This clears up a common misconception of the Rules of Golf that a player cannot touch any growing grass in a hazard.

Golf is hard. Even the best players in the world make mistakes on the golf course, and again—they are the best players in the world.

What separates many Tour Professionals from the average golfer is their mindset and way of thinking. While some may lose their cool on occasion, staying level headed is often the key to a professional finding success on the course.

The Philadelphia Junior Tour gives players a chance to play against some of the best juniors in the region. Many of these players that win often have a positive mindset, possibly giving them an immediate advantage over the field.

So what are some ways for you to gain a competitive mindset? The PGA of America has a few pointers to guide players to a more positive way of thinking for when you hit both good and wayward shots.

When you hit good shots:   

Compliment yourself Take time to feel good about the shot Try to remember everything you did well during the shot and pre-shot routine

When you hit poor shots: 

Keep your poise – step away from the shot location Close your eyes and take a deep breath Find some humor in the shot Think about what may have caused the ball to do what it did (shot evidence such as direction and curvature ) Decide on corrections Remind yourself, “It’s not a life or death situation”

Everyone will hit bad shots at times. It is just the nature of the game. It is the players that learn to deal with and manage their emotions in the most effective ways that find success on the course.

So the next time you hit a poor shot, remind yourself, “It’s just golf,” and have fun!
