Ladies and Gentlemen, Another Championship is upon us and on behalf of the Officers, Board and Staff I would like to welcome you to the 98th Philadelphia PGA Professional Championship. We have a great legacy of playing professionals in the Philadelphia Section and the 2019 season has seen a nice increase in the number of players in our Section events. We have 2 great facilities hosting the event this year. A big thank you to the staff and membership of The Union League Golf Club at Torresdale and Riverton Country Club. Host Professionals Sean Palmer and Kevin Duffy have been instrumental in helping us secure their facilities and prepare for the Championship. This year’s event would also not be possible without the hard work of the grounds staff at both facilities. On both sides of the Delaware River, Donald Ross had his hand in the design of both courses so we are ready for a great test of classic championship golf.

Welcome to the Union League Golf Club at Torresdale for the playing of the 98th Philadelphia PGA Professional Championship!

Torresdale has a storied history in Philadelphia golf, dating back to Donald Ross’ 18-hole design in 1919, to Sam Snead’s course record of 64 in Philadelphia’s first PGA Tour event. Famous for its difficult greens and excellent shot variety, Torresdale has seen a transformation in the past five years after restoration efforts by Stephen Kay and now Rees Jones. We are amidst further restoration efforts and are honored to host this championship while bringing Torresdale back to its former glory.

It is my pleasure to welcome you to Riverton Country Club for the 98th playing of the Philadelphia PGA Section Championship.

Riverton Country Club is excited to host the Championship this year and we truly hope you enjoy your time at the club. RCC was originally founded as a 9-hole course in 1900 and after many years of success, the club voted to expand to an 18-hole facility.

In 1915, the club commissioned Donald J. Ross to design the course and on Labor Day in 1917, the new course was opened.

Donald Ross was famous for designing fair golf courses where the greens were the defense and Riverton is no exception.

In 2017, 100 years after the original opening, Riverton Country Club embarked on a multi-phase golf course restoration, bringing the club back to Donald Ross’ original vision. With the help of the original Donald Ross sketches and a team of the foremost experts in Ross design, Riverton is working hard to bring back some of the golden age design characteristics that have been lost over the years.

Contestant Information Registration There is no formal registration for competitors. Please report to your starting tee 10 minutes prior to your starting time so the starter can go through any Local Rules and notes for play that day.

Course Round One and Round Two will be played at either Union League GC at Torresdale or Riverton Country Club with the player alternating courses after Round One. The Final Round will be played at Union League GC at Torresdale.

Groups and Starting Times Groups and starting times for Rounds one and two are emailed to all competitors. They are also posted on the PPGA Professional Championship Tournament Portal. They are also located on pages 9-12 of this packet.

It is the player’s responsibility to verify their starting time. It is the player’s responsibility to be in place and ready to play at his/her assigned time on the teeing ground.
