The Samuel Proctor Oral History Program's (SPOHP) twelfth annual Mississippi Freedom Project (MFP) fieldwork trip will take place from August 4th-11th. The Mississippi Freedom Project is an award-winning fieldwork initiative focused on interviewing civil rights veterans and participants of Freedom Summer in 1964, but also includes the voices of contemporary activists, local politicians, labor organizers, educators, and students throughout rural Mississippi. Each year the research team records new interviews for the Mississippi Freedom Project Archive.

What is the importance of the Mississippi Freedom Project?

This week-long fieldwork trip is one of the few "study abroad" opportunities that does not charge tuition or fees, and it provides rare opportunities for students to form a personal relationship with individuals and groups whose civil rights work changed the course of history. Every year, we have many more applicants than we have space on the trip. The Samuel Proctor Oral History Program raises funds for the entire cost of the trip.

While the students' primary objective is to conduct interviews, they also perform required reading, attend trainings and orientation, facilitate public events during the trip, attend workshops, sing freedom songs, write reflections, transcribe interviews, and participate in post-trip analysis and production.

When I joined SPOHP: Fall 2017 Biography: I graduated with my undergraduate degree in Psychology and have been working at SPOHP as the Poarch Creek Project Coordinator this past year where we help digitize, transcribe, and archive the history of the Poarch Band of Creek Indian Tribe in Southern Alabama. My first project at SPOHP was the Voices of Dreamers Project interviewing undocumented students at UF. I have also worked on the Refugee Oral History Project in Jacksonville. Working with undocumented students through SPOHP has cultivated my interests in the movement of people and their stories. I hope to pursue a career in storytelling as a way to promote social justice in the world.

When I joined SPOHP: Summer 2018 Biography: I graduated with a B.A. in Political Science and Economics with a minor in Women’s Studies Spring 2019. I first joined SPOHP in Summer 2018 as a field researcher for the annual Mississippi Freedom Project trip. Shortly after, I became a SPOHP staff member in Fall Semester 2018 as a student assistant for the Joel Buchanan Archive (JBA). In addition to my work with JBA, I am co-coordinating the 2019 Mississippi Freedom Project trip. My research interests center on the intersections of race and gender within the juvenile justice system, and the institutional barriers that perpetuate juvenile injustice. I plan to attend law school and practice in the field of civil rights.

When I joined SPOHP: Summer 2019 Biography: I'm a first year graduate student in Agricultural and Biological Engineering. My research focuses on modeling how climate and different agricultural practices influence taste and nutritional quality of fruits and vegetables. I’m passionate about global food security, and the interplay of society and technology.

I envision to work in consultancy, development assistance, and international relations related to agriculture. As a visiting Fulbright scholar from Germany, I’m striving to experience the US in its whole cultural and historic diversity, as well as advocating for international exchange and cooperation. Taking part in this trip, I hope to gain a more in-depth understanding of the Civil Rights Movement in the US. I’m looking forward to applying what I learn to further contextualize US history.

When I joined SPOHP: Fall 2017 Biography: Born in England, raised in South Florida, I'm a mixed race kid with a passion and curiosity for racial and economic justice. As I enter my 4th year majoring in Economics and Political Science and minoring in History and Chinese, I have attempted to learn about the institutional framework that bounds People of Color in the United States. Interning with SPOHP gave me the opportunity to interview protesters at Richard Spencer's speech, Asian American alumni, and local community members. SPOHP provided a solid foundation to approach every situation delicately and to listen to every unheard voice. Over the years, I have worked to increase access within the Bob Graham Center for Public Service and this year I will undertake the role of conference chair focusing on criminal justice reform. My internship with the Office of the Public Defender this summer has exposed me to the many flaws that manifest in our legal system. It is my hope that in the future I can use the law to serve underrepresented communities and fight for a more just society.

When I joined SPOHP: Fall 2018 Biography: My name is Maria Espinoza and I am a rising third year student at UF. I am double majoring in Agricultural Education and Criminology with a minor in Latin American Studies. In 2004 my family immigrated from Mexico and settled in Immokalee, Florida working in tomato fields as farm workers. I am passionate about the intersections of farm labor, race, and immigration and how each manifests within the farmworker and immigrant community. I was recently elected as the president of the Mexican American Student Association. I have also served for the Hispanic-Latinx Affair's PODEMOS initiative which mentors incoming first years and provides academic support. This summer I will be conducting undergraduate research on the implementation of guest-worker programs in the agricultural industry and its impact on both undocumented and documented domestic farm workers. From the Mississippi Freedom Project, I hope to gain a better understanding of the civil rights movement, and how we can organize rural communities today.

3 things I love: Nieces & nephews, mineral water, & astrology When I joined SPOHP: Fall 2017 Biography: My name is Julian Valdivia and I am a 4th year history major at the University of Florida. I’m from Cape Coral, Florida, and am passionate about the history of my community.

Every week I visit the Southwest Florida Historical Society and the Lee County Black History Society and volunteer at their events. With their help I completed my thesis on the legacy of Jim Crow in Fort Myers and conducted over twenty oral history interviews with local elders. After my studies I hope to join one of the nation’s intelligence agencies where I can use my skills to serve the public. While on the Mississippi Freedom Project I’ll be seeking to expand my perspective on America by interacting with people from radically different backgrounds. While I’ve never done research outside of Florida, my past experiences remind me how nuanced local histories can be. I also hope to become a significantly better interviewer while on this trip. Oral history is an important part of all the research I do, so I’m always trying new experiences that will improve my work.

When I joined SPOHP: Summer 2019 Biography: My name is Sarah Louis. I am from Orlando, Florida and am the child of two Haitian immigrants. Currently, I am a rising sophomore studying Political Science on track to either minor or double major in African American Studies. On campus, I am involved with the Black Student Union, I serve as a student ambassador, and I am the internal vice president of the Gator Chapter of the NAACP. During my free time, I enjoy going for runs, playing basketball, and reading. Also, I love spending time with friends and family. From this trip, I hope to gain a better understanding of America’s history during the Civil Rights Movement. I want to apply what I learn from this trip to my work in community organizing. Furthermore, I seek to be challenged and to grow from this opportunity to become a more informed member of the NAACP. Overall, I want to make long lasting connections with other young intellectuals and continue the conversation of social justice while on this research trip.

3 things I love: Music, movies, & books When I joined SPOHP: Summer 2019 Biography: I am a rising senior at the University of Florida majoring in Criminology & Law and African American Studies. I hope to attend law school in the Fall of 2020, potentially getting my Masters in conjunction with my Juris Doctorate. My long-term career goal is to hold the leadership position of Deputy Special Representative of the United Nations Mission for Justice Support in Haiti. My overall passion is to be involved with international law and politics and use it as my framework to rebuild the infrastructure of Haiti and its' relationship with the United States.

By participating in MFP, I am interested in learning more about African American history. I hope to interact directly with historical figures to understand the past and learn how this can inform the present. From these interactions, I hope to cultivate a personal connection with African American history to contextualize the past from an African American perspective.

When I joined SPOHP: Fall 2017 Biography: I am a fourth-year undergraduate student at UF, majoring in Anthropology and International Studies. While participating in SPOHP’s 2017 Fall Semester internship program, I co-wrote a play about my experiences during the Women’s March on Washington. In 2018, I became staff to work on the From Segregation to Black Lives Matter 2019 Symposium. In addition to my work at SPOHP, I am also a Ronald E. McNair Scholar currently conducting research on translanguaging in the Afro-Latinx community. I recently received the prestigious Women's Club Scholarship award for my community service work at UF & the wider Gainesville community.

When I joined SPOHP: Fall 2018 Biography: My name is Omar Sanchez and I am a third-year English Major with a Florida Teaching Minor. I have been involved with SPOHP for almost a year, which has been one of the best decisions I’ve made in my collegiate career. Their endless encouragement and help has taught me the power of listening. I am also involved in the Latinx community on campus, serving as a peer leader for first-year Hispanic/Latinx students. I am tasked with helping them transition to college. I also currently serve as a Senator in Student Government and tutor elementary students in low-income neighborhoods. I applied to the MFP because I want to learn about the Civil Rights Movement from those who lived it and learn how to make sure these stories are not soon forgotten.

When I joined SPOHP: Summer 2019 Biography: I am graduating with a B.S. in Political Science and a Public Affairs Certificate this summer. I am extremely passionate about the intersection of South Asian Studies, Islamic Studies, and Women’s Studies, as I identify with all three. I am also passionate about social justice and civil rights, both within the context of American and international politics. After undergrad, I plan on attending law school and furthering my commitment to serving marginalized individuals. From this trip, I hope to learn more about the civil rights era and spread these teachings to further the movement. On a personal level, I have lived in Pakistan and the US. Lastly, being a transfer student has played an important role in my collegiate experience.

When I joined SPOHP: Spring 2019 Biography: I'm a third-year master’s student in graphic design with a background in architecture. I’m passionate about storytelling as a disruption of dominant narratives and as a catalyst to create community around social issues. I have been a layout editor for The Fine Print (a local magazine that publishes advocacy journalism), as well as co-founder/designer of Dinner + No Show (a publication that works toward bridging disciplinary gaps between UF art history and studio art students). I envision myself starting a career in communications for a non-profit oriented toward increasing meaningful civic engagement and creating more equity in our urban environment. From this trip, I hope to gain interviewing skills to be better equipped to engage in dialogue across difference.

When I joined SPOHP: Spring 2019 Biography: As a recent graduate of the Sustainability program at UF, I was a student activist with DivestUF, organizing for climate justice and urging the university to divest their financial assets from fossil fuels. I want to devote my life to the practice of 'Healing Justice,' collectively healing the wounds of societal injustices while in pursuit of co-liberation. I value process and slow transformations. I love nourishing and tending to a metamorphosis through gardening, storytelling, educating, and mindfulness. I want to design curriculum that centers on oral history, land-based liberation, and Earth connection. I look to my ancestors and empowered leaders for teachings on how to move through pain and transform systems of oppression. In listening to experienced elders, I seek clarity in what can often seem like a senseless world. I would love to dive into filmmaking as a medium for oral history.

3 things I love: Swimming, warm bread, & mugwort tea When I joined SPOHP: Summer 2019 Biography: It was precisely during one of those late-night talks with my father that I made the decision to become a History major despite my dedication to the Pre-Med track. Although my biology background has strengthened my technical understanding of the natural world, it is my history major that has given me purpose. My historical studies have exposed me to the voices of underprivileged populations living within our own communities. I realized that the under representation of minority groups in the historical record also serves to undermine their freedoms. The absence of these stories in conventional history textbooks have inspired me to redirect my energy into shedding light on these silenced histories. Many women, including myself, feel limited in regard to their future. As a health professional, I hope to provide holistic health services that factor in social wellbeing. I hope my experience with the Mississippi Freedom Project will improve my listening skills and deepen my empathy for a patient population I hope to work with in the future.

When I joined SPOHP: Summer 2019 Biography: I am a second-year history major at the UF, and I have a passion for social justice. I am interested in becoming a history professor in the future. The Mississippi Freedom Project is my first field research project, and I am excited to be a part of this experience and to make connections and gain experience in the field. I believe this experience gives me an opportunity to connect with history, and to understand the contributions of some of the many American heroes in this area. Outside of history, I am a passionate environmentalist, and I love spending time outdoors hiking and camping. I take road trips as often as I can, and I’m always willing to go sightseeing in a new place.

When I joined SPOHP: Fall 2010 Biography: I teach American Studies, Race, Leadership, & Ethics, and Black Studies at the NC School of Science and Mathematics, the first STEM-focused, public residential high school in the country. In 2015, I received a doctorate from the University of Florida, where I studied modern civil rights advocacy in the History Department. I joined the MFP trip in 2010 & 2012 as a graduate student and later as an educator. I can attest to the program’s transformative influence – it catalyzed my commitment to using innovative research techniques and progressive pedagogical models in the furtherance of social justice. My research focuses on the relationship between the Great Migration and residential segregation. I’m current working on a manuscript titled, “Black Chicago’s New Deal Congressmen,” which examines two forgotten, but pioneering South Side politicians; Republican Oscar S. DePriest and Arthur W. Mitchell.

Fieldwork Team DISTINGUISHED GUESTS When I joined SPOHP: Fall 2012 Biography: I graduated from the University of Florida in 2014 with a degree in History, Russian Studies, and Education. I completed my thesis on school resegregation under Dr. Ortiz, who has been a pivotal figure in teaching me about institutional racism and its lasting effects. I chose to pursue a career in public education and moved to Baltimore in 2016 to teach and work on an M.Ed. degree from Johns Hopkins University. Next year, I will be teaching US History, History of the Holocaust, and African American History. I am excited to use this opportunity to design engaging curriculum. Hearing the experiences of those active during the Civil Rights Movement will bring the events to life and help my students realize how much others have sacrificed for the freedoms we have today. Finally, my students will study the strategies used in the movement to evoke change and use these as a model to facilitate their own agency in taking a role in their government.

When I joined SPOHP: Spring 2000 Biography: Deborah Hendrix is SPOHP’s Digital Humanities Coordinator. She has worked with the program since 2000.

Deborah has taught digital humanities production including audio and video editing, videography, oral history interviewing, and final production to thousands of students, staff, and faculty at the University of Florida—in addition to teaching numerous digital humanities production workshops throughout the United States. Deborah's expertise in digital humanities is sought out by organizations across the country and she has served on several national Oral History Association committees. She is also the recipient of the University of Florida’s 2016 Superior Staff Accomplishment Award. Deborah manages SPOHP’s 7,500+ collection of oral history interviews and making these ultimately accessible to students, scholars and members of the general public.

Professor Paul Ortiz has been the director of the Samuel Proctor Oral History Program since 2008. He is a first-generation college graduate, a former community college transfer student, and a thirdgeneration US military combat veteran. Dr. Ortiz was president of the Oral History Association for the 2014-2015 term—serving in this capacity exactly 40 years after Samuel Proctor, the founder of UF Oral History, served as OHA president. Professor Ortiz’s most recent book, An African American and Latinx History of the United States was the recipient of the 2018 PEN Oakland-Josephine Miles Award for Literary Excellence. He is also the author of Emancipation Betrayed: The Hidden History of Black Organizing and White Violence in Florida from Reconstruction to the Blood Election of 1920. Dr. Ortiz has lectured on his research on African American and Latinx histories and social movements at scores of universities including Harvard, Stanford, Northwestern, Columbia, UC-Berkeley, UCLA, the University of Wisconsin, Madison, New York University and many other institutions.

Dr. Ortiz is faculty advisor for several UF student organizations including the Dream Defenders, the Venezuelan Students Association, Por Colombia, CHISPAS as well as a longtime participant in UF’s Minority Mentor Program. He was awarded the 2013 César E. Chávez Action and Commitment Award by the Florida Education Association, AFL-CIO. He also received the Rosa Parks Quiet Courage Award in 2014 for his contributions to civil rights and social justice.

Fieldwork Team PROGRAM DIRECTOR "I began doing oral history field work in the Florida Panhandle as well as Arkansas and the Mississippi Delta in the summers of 1994 and 1995 as a graduate student at Duke University. During the course of my interviews, I learned from courageous individuals who survived lynching attempts on their lives, workers who organized the first industrial unions in the South in the 1930s along with founding organizers of the Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party, the most important independent political party in US history.

During the 12 plus years of the Mississippi Freedom Project, I have been able to introduce students to the children as well as grandchildren of the original narrators who taught me a new understanding of American history that I had never encountered in any history textbook. I am deeply honored to be able to carry on this work and humbled at the many donors who have made it possible for MFP to continue to bring together students, civil rights organizers, and classroom educators."

ZOHARAH SIMMONS EDUCATOR & COMMUNITY LEADER

Dr. Gwendolyn Zoharah Simmons served as a Senior Lecturer in African American and Islamic Studies at the University of Florida in Gainesville from 2000-2019. She received her B.A. from Antioch University in 1989, her M.A. in Religion in 1995 and her Ph.D. in Islamic Studies and a Graduate Certificate in Women’s Studies from Temple University in 2002. During her early adult life, Dr. Simmons was a part of the Student Non-Violent Coordinating Committee (SNCC), becoming active during the 1960s Sit-In Movement as a student at Spelman College in Atlanta, GA where she studied from 1962 to 1964. It was during this time that she met Dr. King, visited his church and marched with him in several desegregation demonstrations in Atlanta.

This involvement led to her leaving college to work full time with SNCC in the summer of 1964 as a volunteer in the historic 1964 Mississippi Freedom Summer Project. She spent a total of 18 months in Mississippi beginning that summer, serving as Project Director in Laurel, Mississippi and an additional two years working full-time on voter registration and desegregation activities in Alabama and Atlanta during the 1960s. Immediately after her work with SNCC, Dr. Simmons was hired by Ms. Dorothy Height to serve as the National Council of Negro Women’s (NCNW) Mid-West Field Director of their “Project Woman Power” funded by the Ford Foundation to recruit and train low income African American women for community change. Dr. Simmons organized and trained women in Chicago, Illinois, Cleveland, Lorrain and Elyria, Ohio and in Detroit Michigan for the Project for two years. Dr. Simmons lectures extensively throughout the United States on the Civil Rights Movement, Women and Islam and Islamic Fundamentalism.

This project was packed with dozens of laughs, heartaches, and new insights but upon reflection that troublesome night really impacted me the most. This is the iconic memory I will share with my peers whenever I get asked about my experience on the Mississippi Freedom Project.”

"I have always been global-minded—concerned with the welfare of all peoples, being a citizen of the world, and the like. I focused on global issues… yet this trip to the Delta showed me the uglier side of our great nation, the embedded horror in the still-bloodstained South. I am determined to begin with awareness. As I said, my generation has not found its voice, its cause yet. But we cannot rest on the laurels of our forefathers, we cannot bask in their achievements, because that is not sustainable behavior. We must find our fire, our voice, and wield it fiercely. But awareness and education are the first steps. Unless my generation understands the dire state of the world we inherit, we cannot do much. I can say that the trip to the Delta has awoken the activist in me. And she will not rest until ignorance is no longer a viable excuse for inaction."

"At first I was a bit skeptical about going on the MFP trip. I did not think that going to Mississippi the week before taking the LSAT was such a good idea.

However the opportunity to meet civil rights activists and original members of SNCC was an opportunity that is not offered to just everyone. Now I can honestly say that going on the trip to Mississippi was one of the best risks that I ever took in my life. All in all, words do not justly express how amazing and influential this trip has been on my life. This experience has shaped the type of law that I want to practice. I want to use my legal education to help bring justice to underserved communities.
