The largest family tree* in the world Thirteen million people from all over the world are connected to each other; this is the largest family tree ever constructed in history! Created at Columbia University, it was published in the journal Science. Scientists have studied marriages and migrations* in Europe and North America over the past 500 years, and created a tree that connects the lives and genes* of millions of people. Think about it … this family tree brings together 11 generations and the same number of people that inhabit countries like Belgium or Cuba! What did they discover? Queen Mary University of London has shown that there is a very close connection between magic tricks and intelligence. Now there is the perfect app for those who love to do magic and stun their audience! Phoney is a smartphone app which, through the use of card games, teaches you some tricks typical of illusionists and magicians*. You get your audience to participate in the show by asking questions about their chosen card. Then, as if by magic, you will guess the card. You will have great success! If you also like to play games, try the English magic puzzle called The Twelve Magicians of Osiris, which uses geometric principles*!

Wizards, witches, tricks and illusions: the world of magic has always fascinated adults and children. For this reason, there are a growing number of workshops and schools in the world that teach how to become the new Harry Potter. Abracadabra, alakazam ... let us be enchanted by magic!
magic is in fashion On June 26, 1997, Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s stone came out in British bookstores. It was the first book in the world’s most loved series* and introduced the idea of a magic school in a completely new way compared to previous books. Since then, the world of magic study has become a legend for many children, and now there are many books, experiments, workshops, tutorials and magic shows of all kinds and for all tastes. And are you fascinated by magic and illusionist tricks?
Hogwarts? In Poland! In Poland you really can study to become a magician, fulfilling
the dreams of millions of Harry Potter fans. The Czocha College of Witchcraft and Wizardry is housed in the wonderful castle of Czocha, in southern Poland.
Involving potions*, magic wands, a little imagination, and a lot of effort, the first courses started in 2014, with over 200 students from all over the world. Just like 7

in the legendary books by J.K. Rowling, students, upon arrival, are divided into five ‘houses’: Faust (Knowledge and Power), Molin (Loyalty and Intuition), Sendivogius (Courage, Honour and Diplomacy), Durentius (Diligence and Bravery), and Libussa (Creativity and Foresight). Lunch is shared in the Great Hall and lessons include subjects like Defence Against the Dark Arts*, Spells and many more. Amazing!
Magic chants
Abracadabra, alakazam, hocus pocus ... magic chants are fundamental to magic tricks. These magical sounding words are linked to spells and are often derived from Latin or completely made up. Each spell works only

if you say a chant precisely while holding* a wand and thinking intensely about the effect you want to achieve. “Alohomora”, for example, was the chant that was uttered by Hermione to open locked doors with a spell.
The art of illusionism
Illusionism is an art in which the artist, called an illusionist, magician, or conjurer, creates effects that seem magical, through tricks of various kinds. To become an illusionist you need to practice and study, study, study! A good illusionist makes the spectator believe something has really happened and leaves him amazed* by what he has seen. The true skill lies in being natural and very coordinated, so that the illusion looks very real and you do not understand how it was done – think of the game of the three balls!
David Copperfield
David Copperfield started doing magic as a child, with the nickname “Davino the Boy Magician” and a lot of talent. He is a great American illusionist who is skilled at stage magic, like the traditional woman sawnin-two or the levitation* of a person. He has also performed in open spaces, especially in the 1980s. He crossed the Great Wall of China, made a seven tonne jet disappear from an airport, and even ... made the Statue of Liberty disappear!
The first school of magic to appear in a book was ‘Roke’. It was conceptualised by an American woman called Ursula K. Le Guin, who, in the 1960s, wrote the Earthsea trilogy. This series is a popular favourite with all true fantasy fans.
Fairy castles
The castle is a symbol widely used in the world of magic: it’s a symbol of nobility, mixed with that of a fairy tale. The one in Alnwick, UK, is home to the Hogwarts School, and is certainly one of the most beautiful and famous castles in the world, but there are others that are truly spectacula r. For example the Castillo de Coca (Spain), the Hohenschwangau (Germany), the Catherine Palace (Russia), the Château de Chambord (France), the Hohe nwerfen Castle (Austria), the Château de Chillon (Austria) or the Malb ork Castel (Poland).
