farmer has got a donkey. The donkey works all day. He carries big bags to the farmhouse.

After many years the donkey is now old.

He isn’t strong and he can’t work.

The farmer, his master, is angry.

My master doesn’t want me!

Go away, donkey!

So, one morning the donkey leaves the farmer to go to Bremen, the town of music.

He wants to be a musician.

He wants to play the guitar.

On the road the donkey sees a dog.

The dog is very tired.

‘Hey, are you OK?’ asks the donkey.

‘I’m old and tired. I can’t run fast.

My master doesn’t want me,’ says the dog.

‘You can come with me!’ says the donkey.

Is the dog happy or sad?

‘Where are you going?’ asks the dog.

‘I’m going to Bremen to play music in a band. Come with me,’ says the donkey.

‘We can sing together. I can play the guitar and you can play the drum.’

The dog is happy and goes to Bremen with the donkey.

The dog and the donkey walk together. Soon they see a cat.

The cat is sitting on the road.

She’s very sad.

‘Why are you sad?’ asks the donkey.

‘Why are you sitting here?’ asks the dog.

‘I’m old,’ says the cat. ‘I’m tired and I can’t catch mice because I’m too slow.

What can I do? Where can I go?’ says the cat.

‘Come with us to Bremen! You can be a town musician,’ says the donkey.

‘Yes, you can sing and play the violin,’ says the dog.

The cat wants to go to Bremen, too.

The cat is happy. She’s got new friends.

The three animals walk together.

Soon they arrive at a farm.

A rooster is sitting on the gate.

He’s crying.

‘Why are you crying?’ asks the donkey.

‘My master wants to cook and eat me!’ says the rooster.

‘Come with us to Bremen. You can sing in our band. You can play the trumpet, too!’ says the donkey.

‘Yes, great! Let’s go!’ says the rooster.

The rooster is happy. All four animals walk together.

The road to Bremen is very long. In the evening, the animals come to a forest.

They’re tired. They stop and sit down.

The donkey sits under a tree. The dog sits next to a tree. The cat sits behind a bench.

It’s night-time in the forest. But the donkey sees a light. It’s a house.

‘Look, it’s a nice warm house!’ says the cat.

‘I’m hungry. Maybe there’s food,’ says the dog. ‘Let’s go and see.’

The donkey looks in the window.

‘What can you see?’ asks the rooster.

‘There’s a table with good things to eat and drink and there are… four robbers!’

The animals are hungry. But together they’ve got a plan!
