ethody School for boys and girls was a large stone building on a hill near a wood. Before it was a school it was called Methody Hall and was the home of Lord Methody. Lord Methody was always angry with his sons and daughters. In fact, he was always angry with everyone! When he died, he left Methody Hall to become Methody School.

In the entrance hall of the school there was a portrait of Lord Methody. Lord Methody looked frightening and unfriendly! Above the portrait was the school motto, “Qui laborant pro” – Those who work hard will succeed.

3 One day, the children were all having dinner in

the dining room. Harriet, the daughter of the famous detective, Sherlock Holmes, was with her friends, Violet and John. Everyone was excited because there were only two days before the school holidays. Suddenly, the head teacher came into the dining room and rang her bell.

The maths teacher, Mr Blackthorn, was with her.

They looked very serious. There was silence.

‘The portrait of Lord Methody has disappeared from the entrance hall. Everyone must stay at school until the thief returns the portrait,’ said the head teacher.

4 After dinner, Harriet was in the science lab

with Ms Hilliard, the science teacher. ‘Why did someone take that portrait?’ asked Harriet thoughtfully. Ms Hilliard looked nervous. ‘I know why,’ she said. ‘I heard ...’ but just then the head teacher came into the room. ‘Ms Hilliard, I want you to go to the London Teachers Conference,’ she said. ‘But Mr Blackthorn, the maths teacher, is going,’ said Ms Hilliard, surprised. ‘No, he isn’t,’ said the head teacher. ‘He wants to stay here to look for the thief. You go, please.’

Ms Hilliard didn’t want to go but she had to do what the head teacher said. She got into a taxi and went off to the conference in London.

Harriet, John and Violet watched her go.

5 Harriet found some small blue flowers on her

bed. ‘Look,’ said Harriet, ‘these flowers are forget-me-nots. I think they’re from Ms Hilliard.

She doesn’t want me to forget our conversation.

Perhaps she has left a message in the science lab.

Come on. Call John and let’s go and look.’

The children were going down the corridor to the science lab when they saw Mr Blackthorn.

He was coming in the opposite direction.

‘What are you doing?’ he asked, angrily.

‘Go to bed now!’

6 The children waited in their rooms for ten

minutes and then went down the corridor to the science lab again.

This time they saw a man coming quietly out of the science lab. ‘Who’s that?’ asked Violet. ‘It’s the new gardener,’ said John. ‘I saw him talking to the head teacher this morning. His name is Sniggins.’ ‘Why was he in the science lab?’ asked Violet.

The children went into the science lab. Violet stood by the door. Suddenly she said, ‘Sniggins is coming back! Quick! Hide!’ John jumped under Ms Hilliard’s desk and Harriet and Violet got into the cupboard with Ms Hilliard’s white lab coats.

7 Sniggins came in. He picked up some papers

from Ms Hilliard’s desk and then went out again.

Look out, someone is coming!

They’re all muddy!

I’ve found a message from Ms Hilliard.

Let’s look for an iron.

Narrator: They read the message.

It says, “There’s gold hiding in the portrait.”

So that’s WHY they stole the portrait but WHO was it? And WHERE is the portrait now?

Narrator: Act 4 The next morning.

Remember the mud on John’s trousers?

O.K. Come on. Let’s go and look.

Look! A tree house! Let’s go up.

Here’s the portrait!

Who put it here?

It was Mr Blackthorn!

Narrator: Suddenly!

Look! It’s Sniggins!

Thank you Inspector.

INSPECTOR??

Now, you come along with me, Mr Blackthorn.

Narrator: Act 5 Here’s Harriet’s father, Sherlock Holmes.

How did you know Mr Blackthorn was the thief?

His nose is the same as Lord Methody’s.

How did you know the portrait was in the wood?

He left clues in the science lab.

Yes, I got mud on my trousers. The wood is muddy.

And Sniggins? How did you know he was a policeman?

I knew he was either the thief OR a secret policeman. I thought – ‘Mr Blackthorn is the thief, so Sniggins is a policeman!’

Narrator: Sherlock Holmes and Mr Sniggins worked on the portrait and (8) ___________ ...
