He was born in Edinburgh in 1850 and is considered one of Scotland’s greatest writers.

His talent was in his ability to transport the reader to the most unusual realities through his use of fantasy, adventure, history and Gothic writings, which always provided a subtle moral overtone.

He spent the last part of his life on the Samoan island of Upolu, in a small village he called Vailima, surrounded by the respect and devotion of the local people who renamed him ‘Tusitala’, or ‘The Storyteller’.

The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde is a very famous Gothic novel by the Scottish writer Robert Louis Stevenson.

First published in 1886, it became a classic of literature. The novel is set in the dark and gloomy atmosphere of Victorian London and tells the story of a highly respectable scientist, Dr Jekyll, and his alter ego, the evil Mr Hyde, created by Dr Jekyll’s own experiments.

Throughout the novel there is a sense of mystery and horror, capturing the reader’s interest and making them want to read on until the end.

He was ill for most of his life with tuberculosis, malaria, bronchitis, pneumonia, typhus and cholera.

Early life Robert Louis Stevenson, also known as RLS or Louis to friends and family, was born in Edinburgh on 13th November 1850. An only child, he came from a family of engineers, scientists, lawyers and religious men; all of whom appear in his work.

Stevenson was often ill and spent a lot of time with a family nurse who told him ghost or horror stories.

When he learnt to read at eight, adventure and travel books caught his imagination and gave him a love for writing.

‘Life is monstrous, writing is rational.’

His parents were proud of his writing.

At six he told his mother his first story and she wrote it down.

Education In 1867 Stevenson went to Edinburgh University to study engineering, his father’s choice.

Robert quickly changed to study law, but he never worked as a lawyer because he wanted to concentrate on his writing. His parents were not very happy with some of their son’s life choices. He behaved and dressed in a shocking way and he stopped believing in God altogether.

He started a club at university with the motto: ‘Disregard everything our parents taught us’.

He had the nickname ‘Velvet Jacket’ because of how he dressed and police once arrested him in a snowball fight.

‘The man is a success who has lived well, laughed often, and loved much.’

Travel and writing As a student Stevenson spent his summer holidays in France with other young writers and artists. He published travel essays, Roads (1873); and travel books, An Inland Voyage (1878), the story of a canoe trip in Belgium and France; and Travels with a Donkey in the Cevennes (1879). He also wrote book reviews for magazines and published his first short stories.

When older, he travelled to Hawaii.

He travelled for 12 days across France with a donkey he bought for sixtyfive francs and which he called Modestine.

Just before he was married, an American dentist replaced all Stevenson’s bad teeth with wooden ones.

The place where they stayed later became a park, named after Robert Louis Stevenson.

Love and marriage He met his future wife, American born Fanny Van de Grift Osbourne, in France in 1876. He was 26 and she was ten years older, married with two children. She returned to California and it took Stevenson three years before he had enough money to join her, but the journey nearly killed him.

Stevenson finally married Fanny Osborne in May 1880 after her divorce. They travelled together with her son, Lloyd, to the Napa Valley in San Francesco.

Important works Stevenson returned to Britain with his new family in August 1880, and his parents were happy to see him. Although Stevenson was very ill during this period, he met famous writers like Henry James, and wrote his most important works: Treasure Island (1883), Jekyll and Hyde (1886) and Kidnapped (1886). People began to see him as a serious writer. After his father died in 1887, the Stevensons moved to New York.

An invented island map gave him the idea for Treasure Island. It also explores characters with two sides.

He dreamt the story of Jekyll and Hyde, quickly wrote it, then burnt the first copy, before selling 40,000 copies in Britain in its first six months.

Samoa and death In 1888, Stevenson rented a boat and went sailing for almost three years around the Pacific with his family. The sea air and warm weather helped improve his health.

Then in 1890 he bought some land in Upolu, an island in Samoa. He wrote several more books, but they were not as popular as his earlier work. He died suddenly on 3rd December, 1894 aged 44, after bleeding from the brain. He was buried at the top of Mount Vaea above his home in Samoa.

He took the local name ‘Tusitala’, or ‘Teller of Tales’.

Chapter 1

The Mystery of the Door Mr Utterson is the sensible lawyer, who tells most of the story.

In Victorian England it was very important to be respectable: have money and a good position in society.

Utterson and Enfield are good friends and cousins who like to walk around London on Sundays.

This was an expression for men who dressed fashionably and went to popular parties and clubs in town.

Mr Gabriel Utterson, the lawyer, was tall, thin, strong and quite handsome. He never smiled and was not good at making conversation. He lived a serious and simple life; only drinking wine with friends and never going to the theatre. But people liked him as he was surprisingly tolerant*. He was more likely to help than to criticise* people. Maybe it was easy for Mr Utterson as he hardly ever showed his feelings, but he often became the last respectable person who anybody in trouble could call a friend.

He spent time with old friends or family members, which might explain why he and Mr. Richard Enfield were friends. Enfield was very different; a well-known* ‘man about town’, but also a distant cousin. Every Sunday they met and walked the streets of London.

Surprised to see them together, people asked themselves what they talked about. But the two men enjoyed their trips so much that they avoided anything that would interrupt this pleasure. tolerant willing to allow people to behave or believe in different things from you criticise to say what you think is wrong or bad about something well-known somebody or something that lots of people know or recognise Enfield pointed at the door.

Chapter 1 The Mystery of the Door

One Sunday, the two men were walking together when they turned down a side street in a busy part of London. The street was small and quiet that day, but it was usually busy on weekdays. Even on a Sunday, you could see that the street was different from the other nearby streets. It had clean and tidy houses, with fresh paint on them, which people passing by noticed.

It was a pleasure to see, apart from one dark-looking* building. It had two floors but it had no windows, only a door on the ground floor. The wall above it was very dirty and didn’t have any fresh paint on it.
