Alice in Wonderland is with her sister on a summer’s day.

16 It is a beautiful summer’s day. Alice and her sister are sitting under a tree in a green field. Alice’s sister is reading a book but Alice is bored because there are no pictures in the book. She yawns*. She doesn’t know what to do. It is so hot. Suddenly, she sees a White Rabbit with big, pink eyes run past her.

‘Oh dear! I’m late, I’m late!’ says the rabbit. He takes a watch out of his waistcoat* pocket* and looks at it carefully.

‘Oh dear. Very very late!’

Alice watches the rabbit as it runs across the field. She wonders* where it is going.

‘How strange,’ says Alice to herself, ‘a rabbit in a waistcoat with a watch.’

She gets up and follows the rabbit. She runs across the field until she sees the rabbit disappear down a hole*. Without a thought, she quickly jumps into the hole after the rabbit. She falls and falls and falls. She is scared. She falls for a very long time.

Alice sees a White Rabbit.
