J First of all, I’d like to introduce you to our new friends in Reverie Prairie, the town where Myrtle, Morris, Frances, Oliver, Abby and Henry live. Autumn is a wonderful season to go to the country or to a farmers’ market to choose some delicious fruits and vegetables! In Story Corner, you’ll read about our friends’ adventures in the country when they go to visit a vegetable garden. You’ll also read about a girl named Anne who is the main character of a wonderful book called Anne of Green Gables. I hope you have fun reading and playing with us! Alice

A Pumpkin Patch In North America, pumpkin rhymes with Halloween. But also with pumpkin pie: a favourite dessert that is typical of the traditional Thanksgiving meal in autumn. Pumpkins grow on a vine on the ground and can be very heavy. Have you ever lifted a pumpkin? Have you ever carved a face to make a Jack-o-Lantern?

“Pumpkin spice” has become a flavour for warm drinks and a scent for scented candles. It’s a warm, sweet, spicy flavour that includes cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves and ginger; it doesn’t contain any pumpkin at all. Rather, it’s a combination of spices that is often used in recipes that include pumpkin, like cakes, muffins, pies, sweet breads, bubble tea, hot milk, etc.
Pumpkin growing competitions give a prize to whoever has grown the biggest pumpkin. Usually over 2,000 lbs: they have to be moved with a crane! How much is 2,000 lbs?

The tasty garden Here comes the bus!
Come on, everyone, time to go to my uncle’s vegetable garden!
Hi Myrtle, and welcome, everyone! Are you ready to see my incredible garden?
Yeeees! Hi, uncle!
It’s a sunny Saturday in Reverie Prairie. Our friends are ready to get onboard the bus that will take them to Myrtle’s uncle’s garden. As you see, here are the vine tomatoes. You may try one if you like!
Myrtle is glad to introduce her uncle to her friends and to have them taste the produce from the garden. Look, Morris, a snail!
Really? I love tomatoes!
Yum! They’re delicious! Myrtle’s uncle shows them around and explains what grows in each part of the garden. It takes a lot of patience to be a gardener.

Ha!Ha! Let’s hope it doesn’t eat it all up! The lettuce patch is green and full of tender leaves... that everyone enjoys!
This is Tip, my bunny rabbit. He’s very clever and is always exploring this part of the garden.
Carrots? (Sigh), but I don’t see any carrots anywhere!

Why this part?
Because it’s where I grow carrots! Tip the bunny runs and jumps into the uncle’s arms. Tip loves being carried, but what he loves most is carrots! Now, let’s go see the fruit trees!

Anne of Green Gables In the story of Anne of Green Gables, the young girl named Anne is a great romantic who is also cheerful and clever! The book is so popular that it has inspired many TV series and musicals. Who is Anne? Anne of Green Gables is a story invented by Lucy Maud Montgomery, a Canadian writer from Canada’s smallest province: Prince Edward Island. Anne is a red-headed orphan who is adopted and goes to live on a farm. Some children make fun of Anne in her new class. She feels very different from the children she knows, but she is optimistic and has a lively imagination. Anne is always inventing wonderful stories and getting into trouble, but she believes in herself and finds love and happiness. Who are Anne’s fans? Anne is a character loved by people in many parts of the world. Some people have read

the novel Anne of Green Gables, written more than 120 years ago! Others watched the cartoon Anne With Red Hair when they were children. Others have watched the series on Netflix: Anne With an E. Some people love her so much that they decide to visit Canada to see the place where the story is set: Prince Edward Island! Visitors can enter the real house that inspired the world-famous book.
The 1979 anime series Anne With Red Hair was created by Isao Takahata and Hayao Miyazaki, the duo that founded Studio Ghibli. A Guinness World Record Every summer, on Prince Edward Island, the musical theatre show about Anne is presented. It has become quite a tradition! In fact, the
show is in the Guinness book of world records because it has been presented every single summer for more than 60 years!

Veggie Soup Autumn is the season to pick vegetables in the garden and to make delicious dishes. Everyone loves vegetable soup! How many vegetables do you know in English? Here’s a game to help you practise! 1. All the players sit in a circle and choose a vegetable as their name. Mr Celery, Ms Radish, etc. All but one: the gardener stands in the centre of the circle. 2. The gardener calls a vegetable: “Into the soup pot, Mrs Carrot!” She should answer: “No, Gardener, pick Mr Onion and Mr Celery instead!” (Or any other two vegetables who are playing)
4. The one left without a place must go into the soup pot (outside the circle).
3. At this point, the two new vegetables should swap their positions, but the one who called them can try to steal one of their places!
5. Gardener starts again. The game continues until only one or two vegetables are left. They are the winners!
