Pollyanna is Eleanor H. Porter’s most famous book and is considered a classic of children’s literature.

Pollyanna’s father taught her the ‘glad game’ to help her in difficult moments of her life.

Pollyanna uses this philosophy of looking on the bright side to help lots of people in the story.

Pollyanna was immediately popular with both children and adults and became a bestseller, first in the USA, then worldwide.

Porter said about Pollyanna: “People think Pollyanna was glad about everything. This is not right… Of course, people are sad and bad things are in this world, I don’t say that everything is lovely! But I always think it’s better to meet the day in a good way, finding the best in everything.”

There are also several film versions and TV series of Pollyanna and the book is still popular today.

Pollyanna Comes to Stay 2

Nancy is washing up in the kitchen.

Miss Polly Harrington walks in and tells her to stop and listen. She wants Nancy to clean the little room under the roof and make a bed for Pollyanna.

Miss Polly Harrington walked into the kitchen.

Nancy was washing up. Nancy started to worry.

Miss Polly never walked into the kitchen!

“Nancy!”

“Yes, Miss Polly,” she answered, washing a large1 plate.

“When I’m talking to you, please stop what you’re doing and listen to what I’m saying.”

Nancy went very red.

“Yes, Miss Polly, but you said I have to finish early today...”

“Nancy! Please listen! When you finish here, go to the little room under the roof2. Clean it and make the bed.”

Miss Polly went to the kitchen door, then she stopped.

“My sister’s child, Miss Pollyanna Whittier, is coming to live with me. She’s eleven years old and

can sleep in that room. Her mother died when she was five and now her father is dead, too.”

Nancy’s father died a few months before. She was only fifteen but she had to get money for her family. She found a job at the big house on the hill1, with Miss Polly Harrington. Nancy didn’t like the job very much. Miss Polly was a cold, difficult person, but now a little girl was coming! Nancy thought of her three sisters, brother and mother at home. She loved her sisters and brother very much. With a little girl in the house, she thinks the house can be happier and her job nicer.

“A little girl, Miss Harrington? Oh! That’s nice!” said Nancy.

“Nice? I don’t think it’s nice!” said Miss Polly, and she left.

Nancy cleaned the room for the child, but when she finished she wasn’t happy.

“It’s clean, but that’s all. There’s nothing in here for that poor little girl who doesn’t have a mother or a father.”

Nancy cleans the room for Pollyanna, Miss Polly Harrington’s niece. The little girl’s parents are both dead so she has to stay with her aunt now. Nancy feels sorry that the room has nothing nice in it for this little girl.

When she shut1 the door, it made a lot of noise.

Oh dear! Miss Polly didn’t like noise. Nancy went outside to find Old Tom, who was in the garden.

“Mr. Tom,” said Nancy, “did you know a little girl is coming to live here?”

“A – what?” said the old man.

“A little girl is coming to live with Miss Polly.

It’s her sister’s child.”

Then Old Tom looked sad. “That’s Miss Jennie’s daughter.”

“Who’s Miss Jennie?” asked Nancy.

“She was Miss Polly’s younger sister and the best girl in the world,” he answered. “There was a rich2 man in this town who wanted her for his wife, but she loved a poor man. Miss Polly and her family didn’t like Miss Jennie’s husband because he was poor. Miss Jennie and her husband moved to the south and the family didn’t speak to her again.” He stopped to think. “Miss Polly’s family are all dead now. It’s a quiet house. I think Miss Polly will find it difficult to live with a child!”

“I think a child will find it difficult to live with Miss Polly!” said Nancy.

Old Tom thought this was funny.

“Miss Polly was pretty when she was young, you know,” he said. “There’s a man in this town who was in love with her!”

“No! It’s not possible for anyone to love that woman!” said Nancy.

“She’s only forty years old, Nancy! She wears black now, but she had pretty clothes when she was young. She and the man she loved had problems after Miss Jennie left. Everything changed after that,” said Old Tom. A few days later, Miss Polly called Nancy.

“My niece1 is coming tomorrow at four o’clock.” she said, “Go with Timothy to the station and bring her back here.”

“Yes, Miss Polly, but…”

“I don’t want to go with you. That is all.”

The next day at twenty to four, Nancy and Timothy, who was Old Tom’s son, went to the

Mr. Tom tells Nancy about Miss Polly’s family. The family didn’t speak to Miss Jennie, Pollyanna’s mother, after she married a poor man. He says that Miss Polly, who’s 40, was once pretty and she had problems with a man she loved after her sister left.

station. The train arrived1 and everyone got off and with them there was a little girl with long hair and a hat on her head.

“Are you Miss Pollyanna?” Nancy asked.

“Yes, I’m Pollyanna! Oh! I’m glad2, glad, GLAD to see you,” said the girl. “I’m glad you came to meet me, Aunt3 Polly!”

“I’m not Aunt Polly,” said Nancy. “I’m very different from your Aunt Polly. You can meet her soon.” Nancy thought about cold, difficult Miss Polly and this happy little girl, and she felt sad.

Timothy took Pollyanna’s things and they drove back to the house. Pollyanna didn’t stop talking. For her, everything was pretty.

“Father said Aunt Polly is very rich! Does she have ice cream on a Sunday?”

Timothy thought this was funny.

“No, Miss. Your aunt doesn’t like ice cream,” answered Nancy.

“Does she have nice things in her house?”

“Yes,” said Nancy, but Pollyanna’s little room under the roof didn’t have any pretty things in it!

Poor little girl, thought Nancy.

Pollyanna runs to her aunt when she meets her for the first time and puts her arms round her, but her aunt isn’t very happy about this.

Nancy didn’t say anything!

When Pollyanna and Nancy arrive at the house, Pollyanna runs to her aunt and puts her arms around her. When Pollyanna starts to talk about her father, her aunt says she doesn’t want to talk about him and takes Pollyanna to her room.

When Pollyanna and Nancy arrived at the house, Miss Polly Harrington was in her garden.

“Good afternoon, Pollyanna. I…” Pollyanna ran to her aunt and put her arms round her.

“Oh, Aunt Polly, Aunt Polly. I’m so glad! When Father died I was so sad. Now I have you and Nancy, I’m so happy! Father said…”

“Pollyanna, I don’t want you to talk about your father. Do you understand?”

“Oh, but Aunt Polly…” Pollyanna had tears2 in her eyes.

“Come with me to your room,” said Aunt Polly.

Pollyanna followed3 her aunt, with Nancy after her. The house was full of beautiful things.

“Oh, Aunt Polly, Aunt Polly,” said the little girl, looking around. “It’s a lovely4, lovely house. You’re very rich!”

“Pollyanna!” said her aunt. “We do not talk about money in this house!”

They went up and up, until they got to the little room under the roof. There were no nice things in it, only a bed, a chair and a small table.

“Dinner is at six o’clock, Pollyanna. Don’t be late.” Miss Polly left.

Nancy helped Pollyanna put her clothes in the wardrobe1. For the first time, the little girl looked sad. “You poor girl!” Nancy said.

“I think this could be a nice room, one day.

Look Nancy, I can see the trees and houses from the window. It’s so pretty. I don’t need pictures if I can look out of this window!”

“Pollyanna, you’re the best girl in the world!” said Nancy. Then she went to get dinner ready.

Miss Polly always ate her dinner at six o’clock, not a minute before or a minute after!

Pollyanna had two windows in her room. Out of one she saw the houses and trees in the town, but out of the other was a big tree and it was

very close to1 the house. Pollyanna opened the window and climbed down the tree into the garden. It was difficult but she didn’t worry! She could see a lovely hill near the house. She ran into the garden, past an old man and up the hill.

Pollyanna is late for dinner, so Miss Polly tells Nancy that she can only have bread and milk. When Nancy goes to Pollyanna’s room, she isn’t there. Tom tells Nancy that she’s playing up the hill.

It was six o’clock. Miss Polly sat at the table but Pollyanna didn’t come. She sat for one, two, three minutes, then she said, “Nancy, my niece is late.

When she comes down, don’t give her any dinner, only bread and milk in the kitchen.”

When dinner was finished, Nancy went to Pollyanna’s room, but when she opened the door, Pollyanna wasn’t there! She looked out of the window and saw Old Tom. He could help.

Nancy ran down to the old man in the garden.

“Don’t worry, Nancy! She’s playing up the hill,” Old Tom said.

Nancy went up the hill to find her.

“Pollyanna, Miss Polly is not happy! Your aunt says you can only have bread and milk in the kitchen! I’m very sorry!”

Pollyanna tells Nancy about the ‘glad game’ she played with her father, where you must always look for something you can be glad about, even in difficult moments of your life.

Pollyanna thought for a minute. “I’m not sorry,” she said. “I’m glad!”

“Glad?” asked Nancy, “Why?” “I like bread and milk and I can eat it with you in the kitchen. It’s easy to be glad about that!”

“You’re always glad about everything!” said Nancy.

“Yes, that’s the game, you see. Father and I played the ‘glad game’ when we were sad and it made us happy again. People gave us things because we didn’t have money. I wanted a doll but I never got one. One day, we got a big box with a lot of things in it. I looked for a doll but I only found old clothes and some crutches1 to use when you have a broken leg2. It was difficult to be glad about that! I was sad for a long time, then Father said, ‘You can be glad because your legs are good and you don’t need the crutches!’ That was when we started the game. In the game, you always look for something you can be glad about.”

“It’s difficult to be glad when you get a little room with only a bed, a chair and a table in it!” said Nancy.

“Yes, that was difficult at first,” said Pollyanna.

“I was sad about Father too, but then I looked out of the window. I found the big tree outside my window. You see, I am glad.”

They went to the house, arm in arm. Pollyanna ate her bread and milk, then went to find her aunt.

“I’m sorry you only had bread and milk, but dinner is at six o’clock!” said Miss Polly.

“Don’t be sorry, Aunt Polly! I was glad. I like bread and milk and I like Nancy. What a lovely day! I love being here with you! Goodnight, Aunt Polly!” and she ran out of the room.

I don’t understand that child, Miss Polly thought.

She was ‘glad’ I gave her bread and milk! She ‘loves’ being with me! She picked up1 her book and started to read. But in her room, Pollyanna had tears in her eyes.

“I’m sorry, Father, I can’t play the game. I can’t be glad tonight!”

In the kitchen, Nancy washed the plates. I must help that dear girl, she thought, I can play the game with her. I can help her to be happy!

Miss Polly doesn’t understand why Pollyanna is always ‘glad’. In her room, Pollyanna isn’t glad, she’s sad, but Nancy wants to help her to be happy.

Eleanor H. Porter 1868

Eleanor H. Porter American writer, born 19 December 1868 in Littleton, New Hampshire in the US.

Early works and first success Her first books were for adults, then in 1913, she wrote Pollyanna, a story for children, but adults loved it too. It was a bestseller in the United States, where more than one million people bought the book in the first years after she wrote it.

Personal life She studied singing for many years. Then, after meeting her husband, John Lyman Porter, she started to write books.

Pollyanna Other works and worldwide success From 1913, she wrote one book every year. Then, in 1915, she wrote a new book about Pollyanna called Pollyanna Grows Up, another bestseller. People in the UK, Australia and other 1915 English-speaking countries loved the books about Pollyanna too.

Then they became popular worldwide in countries like Poland, Brazil, Japan and Spain, where people could read the stories in their own language.

About Eleanor A journalist, who met Eleanor in 1918, said that she was like Pollyanna, with happy blue eyes.

A new word – Pollyanna - is now a word in the English dictionary. The word ‘Pollyanna’ is sometimes used to talk about people who are always happy and find something good in everything and everyone.

Glad Clubs The ‘glad game’

Soon after the book arrived in bookshops in 1913, people started ‘Glad Clubs’ in America. People met to bring the ‘glad game’ into their lives. This helped people to live happier lives, and to help them with the difficult things in their lives. Remember, this was a time of big changes in the world. Many people moved to cities to work and it was the start of the First World War. People needed to look for things to be glad about.

There are fifteen Pollyanna books, but only the first two were by Eleanor Porter. These fifteen books about Pollyanna are called the ‘Glad Books’.

The World of Happy!

There are lots of books you can buy about being happy. There are many people in the world today who say you can “think yourself happy”. They think you can change how you see the world.

They say that if you always think about bad things, if you worry all the time, then you have a sad

life. If you try to find the good things in your life, or in the people around you, then your life can be better. It’s not about changing your life – the people around you are the same, you go to school or work, you live your life – but you see your life in a better way. They believe that this can help your life to be better.

Inside our Heads

Doctors now understand much more about us. They can ‘see’ inside your head. For example, when you listen to music or read, or think about playing tennis, different parts of your head are ‘busy’.

They can also see that we can change how we think. This is the same as when we play sport. If we run a lot, our legs get stronger, if we play tennis, our arms get stronger. Maybe Pollyanna was right – if we try to find things that make us happy, even when it’s difficult, we can have happier lives.

Focus on...

Children who change the World Pollyanna is the most famous ‘happy child’ but she’s not the first.

The Selfish Giant

Oscar Wilde wrote a short book (The Selfish Giant 1888) about a man who changes when he meets a child. This man has a beautiful garden with fruit trees in it and lovely flowers. After school, children love to play in this garden. The man comes back home after seven years visiting a friend. When he finds the children in his garden he isn’t happy. He builds a big wall so they can’t go in and the children stop coming into his garden.

After this it’s always winter in the garden, the flowers don’t

grow and the trees don’t have any fruit. Then one day, the man hears a bird sing for the first time. It’s spring in the garden because the children found a path through the wall. The man understands he was wrong.

When they see the man, the children all run away. One little boy doesn’t get through the wall, but tries to climb a tree. The man helps him and says he wants to pull down the wall. From that day the children play in the garden, but he doesn’t see the little boy he helped until the day he dies.

Annie

Like Pollyanna, Annie doesn’t have a mother or a father. She didn’t start in a book though, she started as pictures in American newspapers. These pictures are called a ‘comic strip’. Annie had a dog called Sandy and they did a lot of things together. This comic strip started in 1924. The life of Annie was written for adults. It talked about things happening at that time in the United States.

Later, Annie was put on the radio, a film was made and in 1977. It was a musical and a film (1982).

Annie was now a story for children.

Like Jimmy Bean, Annie lives in a house for children with no parents, called ‘orphans’. This house is terrible. Annie and the other girls have to work very hard.

Annie meets a difficult man called Oliver Warbucks. He’s rich but not friendly. When Annie makes friends

with him, he changes, just like Mr. Pendleton. She goes to live with him and has a good life! The latest film about Annie came out in 2014.

This time Annie lives in Harlem.

Annie (Quvenzhané Wallis) waits outside a restaurant hoping to find her real parents. Cameron Diaz is the bad woman who has the home where Annie lives, and Jamie Foxx is the rich man. Pollyanna on Film Pollyanna was also made into films.

The most famous are a 1960 Disney film with Hayley Mills, who was given an Oscar for her work on this film and a film by Amanda Burton, made for TV in 2003. This 2003 film is very close to the book, but in it Pollyanna and Aunt Polly live in Britain, not America.
