My name is Gustavo. and I live in Madrid.

I have been drawing all my life, ever since I was a child as I didn’t have a TV. I enjoy most of all drawing comic strips and picturing myself and my kids in the illustrations that I create.

This is the story, told through the voice of a young girl from Pakistan, of Malala, a girl from Swat Valley who is famous because she stood up for the right of girls to go to school.

When the Taliban came to her valley, they said people mustn’t listen to music, women must wear burqas and girls mustn’t go to school. Malala wrote blogs and spoke on the radio and television about her dream and the dream of her friends to go to school. When she was just 15 years old, the Taliban shot her, but she didn’t die. Today, Malala still works to help girls go to school around the world.

This is Serina. She’s from Pakistan. This is Lily.

She’s from the UK. And this is Paul. He’s from Nigeria. Serina, Lily and Paul are at school. It’s break time. For their English homework, they have to write about a famous person. Serina is going to write about a girl from Pakistan.

3 ‘Malala comes from the same place as me.

It’s called Swat Valley and it’s in Pakistan.

Swat Valley is very beautiful! There are lots of mountains and green hills and rivers.

Malala lived in a city called Mingora with her mum, dad and two brothers.’

‘Like me and the other children, Malala and her brothers played and laughed a lot. They ran up and down the streets and watched the kite-flying competitions. The kites in Pakistan are very beautiful!’

4 ‘Malala’s dad had a school. It was a small

school, but Malala loved it! When she was very small, she sometimes went to school to listen.

Later, when she could go to school every day, she was very happy!’

Serina told them: ‘Where I come from, life is easier for boys. When a girl is around nine years old, she must wear a headscarf and stop playing with boys.

Parents think it’s more important for a girl to get married than to go to school. But in Malala’s dad’s school, girls learned to read and do Maths, English, and Science. Then the Taliban came …’

5 The Taliban

Lily and Paul visited Serina. They met her mum and dad and ate some food from Pakistan. It was delicious!

Serina, tell us about the Taliban.

6 ‘There was a Taliban radio station called Radio

Mullah. They told people they mustn’t listen to music, men must grow their beards, women must wear burqas and … girls mustn’t go to school.’

‘Then, they closed all the girls’ schools. It was terrible, but what could we do? We studied at home, but it was very difficult not to be in class with our teachers!’

7 ‘Malala, her friends and her dad talked on the

radio and television and wrote blogs. They spoke for all of us! I listened to them, and I was very happy. Malala said girls wanted to go to school.

It was their dream. It was my dream too!
