The Smurfs are tiny blue people who live in the forest. In this new film, their adventures are in 3D! The writers of Shrek 2 and 3 wrote the new film. The Smurfs are not in their forest, but in Central Park in New York. As always, Gargamel, the bad wizard who wants to catch the Smurfs, causes lots of problems!

At Circus

School Do you like the circus? Circus artists are very talented! But even they must go to school. What do they study? Let’s find out.

Zip Zap Circus School

Jugglers A juggler throws balls, rings or other objects in the air and he doesn’t let them fall. A good juggler trains for many hours every day and has a lot of patience. Do you want to try? Start with three small balls. Firstly, throw just one ball from your right hand to your left hand, then introduce a second ball, then finally a third ball. Throw the balls high so you can catch them more easily!

Acrobats © Shutterstock

It can be difficult and sometimes dangerous to be an acrobat. Every acrobat has a speciality: walking on a high rope, riding a bicycle with just one wheel, or flying above the audience on a swing! A good acrobat trains for many hours every day.

Being a clown is … a very serious thing! It isn’t easy to be funny! Clowns have to be both actors and acrobats. Clowns are very different: a white clown talks and makes people laugh; a mime clown doesn’t speak but does some very funny actions. Then there are musical clowns, acrobatic clowns …

The Zip Zap Circus School is in Cape Town in South Africa. Poor and sick children can go there to learn to be jugglers, acrobats and clowns. In this very special school, children learn other “subjects” like courage and hope. Zip Zap Circus School was created 20 years ago and works with the famous Cirque du Soleil and Doctors Without Borders.

York It is one of the most historical cities in England, and one of the most beautiful too! The city of York, in the North of England, has a very important Roman, Viking and Medieval history. And there are many wonderful attractions to visit too. Probably the most important attraction of all is York Minster. It is a large gothic cathedral in the centre of York and it is almost 800 years old. It has a large central tower, which is over 70 metres high. You can climb the 275 steps to the top of the tower and see the spectacular view of the city!

Culture Corner What do you usually do on 31st October? Do you dress up in a scary costume and visit your neighbours?

It’s

Halloween! We celebrate Halloween on 31st October in many countries around the world. It is a very popular holiday, particularly in the USA and Canada and also in Great Britain. However, you also find many Halloween celebrations in Europe, Asia and Australia!

The History

adverbs of frequency; past simple verb “to be”; present simple questions.

We do not know the exact origins of the festival of Halloween, but it is probably a combination of the ancient Roman Parentalia (the Festival of the Dead) and the Celtic festival of Samhain (the Festival of Summer’s End).

Symbols of Halloween During the holiday of Halloween we often see pumpkins or turnips carved with scary faces and lit up with a small candle. Many people, particularly children, dress up in costumes of witches, ghosts, vampires, skeletons and monsters!

12

twelve

Apple Bobbing The game of apple bobbing involves filling a large basin with water and putting apples in it. Children then try to catch a floating apple from the water. But they can’t use their hands; they can only catch the apples with their teeth! And they nearly always get wet!

Trick or Treat? The game of ‘Trick or Treat’ is typically played by children on the night of Halloween. They usually visit their neighbours’ houses asking the question “Trick or Treat?”, and they try to collect as many ‘treats’ (like sweets, biscuits or sometimes money) as possible. If the neighbours don’t give the children a treat, the children perform a ‘trick’ (a joke or prank) instead.
