- Sabrina Gonzalez Pasterski was born in Chicago on 3rd June 1993.

- She’s the first person in her family to have been born in the US. Her parents are from Cuba.

- Twice (in 2015 and 2017) she appeared in the list of 30 under 30 (30 exceptional* young people under 30 years old) by Forbes magazine.

- She doesn’t use social networks (Facebook, Twitter or Instagram), but she has her own site – physicsgirl.com – where she publishes her research and the articles that have spoken about her over the years.

The new Einstein

Sabrina graduated in physics at MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology) in Boston with top marks*, and then she went to Harvard, one of the most prestigious universities in the world. She studies some of the most fascinating, but also the toughest* subjects regarding physics such as black holes, gravity and space and time. She’s considered to be the heir* of one of the greatest scientists of all time - Albert Einstein.

Before her, Einstein and Stephen Hawking, the genius* astrophysicist and cosmologist studied the Universe and its rules. And these two extraordinary scientists are her role models. Professor Hawking regularly read Sabrina’s research and wrote about it in his writings. Some people think that Sabrina will be able to make fundamental new discoveries that will change our idea of the universe.

Flying with Sabrina

When she was 14 years old, her biggest passion was flight. So she built a prototype* of an aeroplane, a small aircraft* with an engine that functioned perfectly. «It’s for my dad», she said, but two years later she flew the aeroplane herself, above Lake Michigan, becoming the youngest person to ‘fly’ an aircraft that was built by herself.

At the time, Sabrina uploaded her aircraft project on YouTube and the video got more than a million views.

Amazon or NASA?

NASA has already offered her a job, but Jeff Bezos, founder of Amazon and businessman has also made her a proposal*. He contacted her to involve her in his space exploration programme called Blue Origin. But for now, however, Sabrina continues to study and to do research far from the spotlight* with humility, patience, dedication and maximum concentration!

Emoticons and emojis: the invasion of the smileys!

About six billion emoticons and emojis are exchanged every day by smartphone.

But who invented these little faces, and when and why?

One day, by chance :-)

It was 19th September 1982. Scott Fahlman is an IT professor at the University of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania (United States). Internet – as we know it today – still didn’t exist, but professor Fahlman communicated with his colleagues through messages written on the computer.

However, there was a little problem. It wasn’t always easy to understand if the messages were serious or a joke.

Suddenly Fahlman was inspired and he added to his messages a colon*, a dash* and a closed bracket*, inventing the smiley, the symbol for recognising a joke.

Fahlman’s idea had phenomenal* success and smileys began appearing more and more in emails and some years later also on the first web pages.

‘Emoticon’ is the union between the English words ‘emotion + icon’. They allow us to express emotions or moods in digital communication, when the main elements for a face to face interaction are missing (facial expressions, body language). These are essential for a better understanding of the message we’re receiving.

Smile!

The ‘smiley’, that’s to say the smiling yellow face, arrived even before the emoticon. It was created by Harvey Ball, an American artist in 1963. After this, Bernard and Murray Spain, two brothers from Philadelphia, started using these images on millions of stickers, badges, t shirts and cups, making the happiest symbol ever created widespread*. Since 1999 Harvey Ball’s invention is remembered and celebrated on World Smile Day on the first Friday of October. On this day, everyone is invited to do something kind and make at least one other person smile.

association that wants to improve the world with the power of a smile. J

From emoticon to emoji

But what’s the difference between an emoticon and emoji?

As we know, we can make an emoticon by combining* punctuation*, letters and numbers.

An emoji, on the other hand, is a ready made image, a symbol that can represent everything, from a simple yellow smiley, to a cat with heartshaped eyes, from a raining cloud to a plate of spaghetti! There are

Emojis were created by a Japanese graphic designer, Shigetaka Kurita. Their name is formed by the words ‘e’ (image) plus ‘moji’ (character). It was 1999 when Kurita drew the first emoji with a pencil on a piece of paper. These icons were inspired by the traditional manga and kanji, the Japanese system of writing.

lots of them and indicate more than one emotion or mood. Nowadays they have become a true “universal language”: the image of a watch, a bus and a school is a simple message of three characters that everyone can understand (= it’s now time to go to school).

A growing collection The number of emojis at our disposal* changes and grows

from year to year giving us more possibilities to communicate different things. The Unicode Consortium (made up of* big IT companies like Adobe, Google, Microsoft, Apple and Yahoo) is the organisation that periodically updates the collection of images.

The last ones added, 157 in total, include new animals and new hairstyles, superhero masks and a lot of sports equipment.

Modern day hieroglyphs

Emoticons and emojis are the most evolved and “technological” of another form of writing based on images (used more than 5,000 years ago!): hieroglyphs used in Ancient Egypt. These were characterised by a great number of symbolic figures that portrayed man, his actions, animals, objects, natural elements… practically, almost everything.

A “visual” language that resembles a lot that which we use today.

LITTLE FACES … EVERYWHERE! There exists a mechanism inside our brain that causes us to see faces in all kinds of objects. It often happens automatically and instinctively. We seem to see two eyes and a mouth and… we create a face, with different expressions and moods. This phenomenon has a very particular name that you can discover by rewriting the highlighted letters.

British dishes Have you ever tried British food? Some people say that the food we eat in Britain is boring, bland and boiled! This of course depends entirely where you go to eat but nowadays we have some of the top restaurants and best chefs in the world.

While many British people also love international cuisine*, their favourite dishes still remain the traditional food that we’ve been eating for centuries. Take a look to find out more!

In a recent survey* about what people love about Britain, the Sunday roast came 2nd!

The Sunday roast

As the name suggests, this is the traditional meal served on a Sunday and usually eaten together with all the family or friends at home or in a pub. It’s made up of roast meat (chicken, beef, pork or lamb), roast potatoes, different vegetables and gravy (a brown sauce made from the juices* of the meat). This tradition has existed for many centuries and in past times families used to put the meat in the oven before going to church and when they returned home the meat was ready to eat. Probably the most popular meat to eat for the Sunday roast is beef and it’s said that British people’s love for this dates back to the reign* of Henry VII. At this time, his royal guards used to eat roast beef every Sunday and due to this ritual* their nickname became ‘beefeaters’.

Fish and Chips

Certainly everyone knows what this famous British dish is but just in case you don’t, it’s a fried piece of fish in batter* (usually cod or haddock) and thick, potato chips. In 1860 the first fish and chip shop opened in London and it quickly became a very popular meal among the working classes who could eat a filling, tasty meal relatively cheaply. The dish became so popular that many writers mentioned fish and chips in their literary works. For example, in 1937 George Orwell in his book ‘The Road to Wigan Pier’ said: “He considered fish and chips chief among the home comforts” and in Charles Dickens ‘Oliver Twist’ (1838) he mentioned a fried fish warehouse. And you can also find fish and chips in the Guinness Book of World Records.

In 1928, a man called Harry Ramsden opened a shop in Yorkshire in the north of England. On one single day in 1952, the shop sold 10,000 portions of fish and chips and it was a world record. The shop is still there today selling their world famous fish and chips!

Shepherd’s Pie

Can you imagine what’s inside this pie with a name like that? Yes, you guessed it! It’s a meat pie consisting of lamb and mashed potato. It’s typically cooked in a gravy sauce and inside you can also put some vegetables such as peas, celery and carrots. This dish first appeared in 1854 and it’s thought that farmers’ wives invented the pie as a way of using the leftovers* from the Sunday roast. There’s even a vegetarian variety for people who don’t eat meat. It’s called a ‘shepherdless pie’!

If you make the same dish, but use beef instead of lamb, then it’s called a Cottage pie.

In 1913 the British National Federation of Fish Friers was set up*. It promotes fish and chips and also organises training courses for people who want to learn how to cook the perfect fish and chips.

The Full English Breakfast

The British writer W.Somerset Maugham (1874-1965) once said: “To eat well in England you should have breakfast three times a day”.

And this very popular dish can actually be eaten not only for breakfast but for lunch or dinner too. It consists of eggs, bacon, sausages, tomatoes, mushrooms and toast. If you can’t face all that early in the morning, then you can definitely* save it for later in the day. The full english breakfast has its origins in the 1300s. and was very popular among rich people in their big country houses and for them breakfast was an important social event. In the Victorian period it was a chance for people to show off* their wealth* by offering guests a huge breakfast but by the beginning of the 1900s it was a meal that was popular with all the social classes as the ingredients became widespread and easy to find.

Another strange sounding typical dish in Britain is ‘Bangers and Mash’. But can you imagine what it is?

What a strange name for a dish! But don’t worry! You won’t be eating a toad, but sausages with Yorkshire pudding.

The pudding is made from a batter* using eggs, flour, milk and water and then cooked in the oven. The pudding will start to rise and inside the pudding sausages are inserted.

The origins of the name aren’t really known but it probably refers to the sausages peeking out* of the Yorkshire pudding.

It’s usually served with gravy and vegetables. There’s even a ‘National Yorkshire Pudding Day’ in Britain which is celebrated on the 1st Sunday in February.

In 2008 the ‘Royal Society of Chemistry’ said that ‘a Yorkshire pudding isn’t a Yorkshire pudding if it’s less than 4 inches tall’. So make sure your pudding rises!

Ha ha ha! Not a lot really! At school I was good at English, art, music, acting. I was a bit of a disaster at maths. But for my first album I liked the idea of using a symbol and the plus sign gave me an idea of positivity*. Following on from

The last two years have been decisive for your life and your career, and in a totally opposite way… tell us how.

In 2016 I decided to remove myself for a period from social media and I practically disappeared. I reflected. It’s nice giving up being addicted* to the virtual world. 2017 was the best year of my life and a really important year for my career. My third album, Divide, launched by the single Shape of you, established one record after another.

Ed announced his decision on Instagram: «Hi everyone, I’m taking a break from my telephone and social media. I found myself looking at the world through a screen and not through my eyes. I want to take this opportunity to travel the world and see what I’ve been missing. See you all in the autumn, and thanks».

It’s dangerous to have a career that grows and grows and grows… because at a certain point you risk falling.

In your songs you almost always speak about love.

Where do you find inspiration for your songs that are so personal and yet universal?

My songs definitely come from experiences that I live daily. But of course many people identify themselves in my lyrics*. Perfect I wrote for Cherry, my girlfriend, and many of my fans dedicate it to the people they love.

I composed it when I was in Ibiza, at James Blunt’s house, at two in the morning!

Ed met Cherry at school and then both of them followed their own paths*. They met up again in 2015. The singer songwriter says: «I’ve travelled the world but I fell in love with a girl who grew up 10 minutes aways from my house»

A royal cellist Think back to May 19th of this year. Do you remember what important event happened on this day? It involved Harry, Meghan and a lot of guests.

Yes, you got it! The royal wedding. If you managed to watch the ceremony, then you can’t have missed the 19-year old cellist, Sheku Kanneh-Mason who blew everyone away* with his magical performance.

Read on to find out more about him.

A family affair

Sheku was born in Nottingham in the UK and is the 3rd eldest child out of seven brothers and sisters. He started playing the cello when he was just 6 years old but before then he played the violin for a while. He comes from a very musical family and all his brothers and sisters play an instrument too.

In fact, in 2015 they all participated together as a group on the talent show ‘Britain’s Got Talent’. They didn’t win the show but the audience really appreciated* their music.

One success after another

Thanks to appearing on the show, Sheku went on to achieve greater success by winning the ‘BBC Young Musician of the Year’ in 2016 and has been the first musician ever to perform twice at the BAFTA awards, the British Academy of Film and

Britain’s Got Talent

It’s a talent show that has been broadcasted on TV in the UK since 2007. It was the idea of record and TV producer Simon Cowell who’s also a judge on the programme. Contestants* of any age can audition* for the show and their performance is judged by a panel of four judges. The winner of the show receives some money and also the chance to perform at the Royal Variety Performance show in front of the Royal family.

And his success doesn’t finish there.

In January of this year he released his debut* album called ‘Inspiration’ and it broke a UK chart* record as the biggest selling debut album of the year for classical music.

A royal success

However, his biggest surprise came in April of this year when he received a call from Meghan Markle, now Prince Harry’s wife and the Duchess of Sussex, asking him to play at their wedding. After receiving the news, he immediately went on Twitter and tweeted: “I was bowled over* when Ms Markle called me to ask if I would play during the ceremony, and of course I immediately said yes!! What a privilege. I can’t wait”.

After he won the BBC Young Musician of the Year Award in 2016 his hometown, Nottingham, named a bus after him!

Future plans

But after all these successes, what does the future hold for him? Well, he’s currently studying at the Royal School of Music in London where he won a scholarship*. For the 2018/2019 season he’ll become ‘Young artist in residence’ at the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic orchestra where

In this new episode, Bob Parr/ Mr.Incredible takes care of his kids Violetta, Flash and Jack-Jack while his wife Helen/Elastigirl is busy with a new adventure. The youngest child, the very lively Jack-Jack, begins to experiment with his super powers - a flame thrower, electric charges, lasers in his eyes and he can transform himself. The arrival of a new enemy will be the chance to see all the family in action once more.

Mowgli is directed by Andy Serkis, the king of motion-capture*, famous for having played Gollum in The Lord of the Rings by Peter Jackson. The cast is extraordinary: with Andy Serkis (Baloo), there’s Christian Bale (Bagheera), Benedict Cumberbatch (Shere Khan) and Cate Blanchett (Kaa).

Fourteen years have gone by since the last film The Incredibles which was an enormous success and won an Oscar for the best animated feature film.

GUESS THE FILM - The film follows closely the plot of The Jungle Book written by the British writer Rudyard Kipling, published in 1894. The Disney animated version, which has the same title as the book, came out in 1967, with some changes compared to the original story.

ABBA are a well-loved, popular Swedish band from the 1970s.

The name ABBA comes from the first letter of each of the group’s first names - Agnetha, Björn, Benny and Anni-Frid.
