Dear diary, I’m on the school volleyball team, and today there is an important competition. The matches are always on Thursdays at a quarter past five in the afternoon, and I really enjoy playing with my teammates. I usually go to the volleyball court by bus, but today our bus driver has a bad cold, and my parents are working late. Oh dear, I have to go by bike, and… there is a thunderstorm! What a disaster! Today, we are going to play against a very good team: The Black Bats. All the players on The Black Bats are taller than us, and they run much faster than we do. It feels like an impossible match to win, but I’m keeping my fingers crossed and hoping for the best! Love, Madison

Hello, Dad, I’m queuing for the London Eye and I’m feeling sick. A woman told us we have to wait for half an hour. I’m a little bit scared because it is very high: one hundred and thirty-five metres high. It has thirty-two glass capsules, and each capsule can hold twenty-five people. The wheel moves slowly, but it doesn’t stop, and one full turn takes about half an hour. From the top, you can see all of London! You can see Big Ben, the Tower of London, Buckingham Palace, and also the River Thames. I’m frightened that I might fall into the water. I paid thirty pounds for the ticket, and now I have to go on it. I don’t want to waste money, but...

SAVING WATER Read the text about the ways in which you can save water. Choose the correct answer (A, B, C or D) for each of the sentences (1-5). Put a cross ( X ) in the correct box. Only one answer is correct. The first one (0) is an example.

You can save water every day, starting with the bathroom. To fill a bathtub, you need 80 litres of water. If you take a short shower of five minutes, you only use 25 litres of water. Your family can also save water in the kitchen. When you wash dishes for six people in the sink, you use 50 litres of water. When a dishwasher is full, it only needs 15 litres of water to wash all the plates. Many people don’t know that a lot of water is used to make clothes. To produce just one pair of jeans, factories need 10,000 litres of water. That’s about the same amount of water that fifteen people drink in one year. So, take care of your clothes instead of buying new ones very often.

My bed is near the window, and Molly’s bed is next to the wardrobe. We also have two chairs and a long wooden desk with a computer on it. We share the computer, so sometimes we take turns using it. The bus arrives at 8:15, I have got plenty of time. Mum: And don’t forget your lunchbox, it’s on the kitchen table.

Tom: Thanks, mum. Can I have a chocolate bar too? Mum: Sorry… no, you eat too much chocolate. Take an apple instead. Tom: I don’t like apples. Can I have a banana? Mum: Yes. I’ll put one in the box. Come on, are you ready? Tom: Ready! Oh, mum, can Charlie come over after school? Mum: Why? Tom: We’ve got Maths homework for tomorrow, it’s difficult. Can we study together? Mum: Okay. He can have dinner with us if he wants to. Tom: Fantastic. Thanks mum. When we finish our homework, we’ll play video games together. Okay? Mum: But hurry up, the bus won’t wait for you! Tom: Thanks, mum. Going… see you at 4:00. Mum: Bye bye. Be good. TASK 9 TIME TO RELAX Example (0) I don’t like going to the cinema. There’s too much noise. I love watching old films on TV, especially at night when everybody is sleeping. Speaker 1: I usually play video games. I do it after studying. I play online with a group of friends from all around the world. Speaker 2: I go to classical music concerts. Every Sunday there is a concert in the park near my house. I go there on foot and I relax, listening to music, sitting on the grass. Speaker 3: After a long day at the office, I come home and I always have a nice cup of tea, very hot, sweet tea with some biscuits. It’s lovely. Speaker 4: I’m not very good at swimming, but I like it. I often go to the swimming pool with my friends. Swimming with them is relaxing and fun.

Speaker 5: I love going running. I put on my shorts, my running shoes, and I drive to the park. There is a nice small lake in the park and you can run around it, so beautiful. Speaker 6: You won’t believe this! When I want to relax, I like cooking. I often help my mum or my dad in the kitchen. They’re very good at cooking and I’m learning fast. TASK 10 FAVOURITE EATING PLACES Teacher: Hi children! Today let’s look at your homework about where your friends like to eat. Molly, tell us your results. Child 1: Okay, Mr Brown. I have three answers from my friends. Jack usually eats sandwiches, but he prefers his grandma’s lunches. He loves eating at his grandma’s house. Teacher: Good. What about the second student? Child 1: Peter’s mum sometimes takes him to a fast food restaurant in town. He thinks hamburgers are great there. Teacher: That’s interesting. And the last student? Child 1: Sarah always eats in the school dining room. She said school meals are good and healthy. Teacher: Okay, now let’s listen to some other results. James, can you read us your notes? Child 2: Well, Susan likes when her family has a meal outside in the garden. She thinks eating on the grass is nice. Teacher: What about the others? Child 2: Robert’s favourite place is the fish and chips takeaway next to his house. He says the food is really good there. Teacher: Traditional food is always popular. Anything different? Child 2: Sam is happy when his parents take him to the Chinese restaurant. He loves rice. Teacher: Well done, kids. Now let’s write a report.
