Prologue

My Old Room 2

I sit on the bed and look around the room. There’s nothing special about it. There are some posters on the wall, a wardrobe1 and a bookshelf. But once, this was my room and it was special to me.

To be honest2, it was more than a room. It was a place to dream, and sometimes, when things weren’t going well, it was a place to hide.

How many of them have come true? And how many will come true3 in the future?

I think of my life so far, of what has passed and Tom is sitting in what was what will be. While you’re drawing you don’t know exactly where you’re going. You’re not sure what the picture will be. You just follow the numbers.

I’m following the numbers now. I’m moving on to the next one. The next number. A big step1. My wife and I are moving to Italy. Not for a holiday, not for a week or so, but forever!

I have no idea what my picture will be. I have no idea what forever means. But I’m excited about this move. New people, new places, and new things to learn. But before saying hello to my new life, I’ve come here to say goodbye to my old one.

My dad has left the room just as it was when I lived here, when I was a young boy.

I look at myself in the mirror, and then I open the wardrobe and see something there, underneath2 some clothes - something that I don’t want to leave behind3. It’s an old newspaper.

I pull it out carefully and look at the date: August 17th 1977 Then I look at the headline4.

Tom and his wife are moving to Italy forever.

Before leaving, he’s come to see his old room. In the wardrobe he finds an old newspaper from 1977 that he wants to keep.

The headline says ‘Elvis is Dead’. This is Tom’s dad’s favourite singer. Tom starts to read the article and he hears a voice from the past: his voice when he was a boy and everyone called him Tommy.

ELVIS IS DEAD! Elvis Presley was my dad’s favourite singer.

I smile to myself as I think of dad, dancing to ‘Jailhouse Rock’ in the kitchen. My dad called Elvis Presley, ‘The King’. He was The King of Rock ‘n’ Roll. I start to read the article1, but then I hear something.

I hear a voice that’s whispering2 in my ear.

I recognise3 who it is immediately. The voice4 belongs to me. It belongs to my past. I close my eyes to hear it better.

It’s August 1977. August 17th.

I listen to the voice.

And I remember.

Tom reads the article about Elvis Presley and he starts to remember that moment in his past.

Chapter 1

Now, the story is back in 1977.

Tommy tells his dad about Elvis dying.

Tommy’s dad doesn’t often listen to him. This time he does, so Tommy is excited about that.

‘Dad!’ ‘What Tommy?’

‘Look! It’s in the newspapers. I’ve just read it.

It’s Elvis, Elvis Presley. He’s dead!’

‘No!’ cried my father as he took the newspaper from my hand. He couldn’t believe it. He had to read the newspaper with his own eyes.

It was my job every morning to go out and get the newspaper. When I saw that day’s headline I ran home. ‘When Dad sees this he won’t believe it,’ I thought. It was strange really. In some ways, I was even quite excited to tell him the news. I had something to say to Dad, something that he was going to listen to. Dad didn’t often listen to me.

‘That’s not possible. That’s … ’ he said.

The word ‘That’ remained1 there in the air, and was followed by silence2 , as he began to read the article.

‘I have to sit down,’ said Dad when he finished

reading, and he went into the living room. I didn’t follow him. I got the feeling that he wanted to be alone.

He always wanted to be alone.

‘Why’s he so sad?’ I asked myself. ‘Elvis was only an old pop star.’ I knew he liked Elvis Presley a lot, but it wasn’t like he was a friend. It wasn’t the end of the world.

‘No,’ I thought. ‘The world has already ended for Dad. It ended a few months ago.’

The end of the world began with a phone call.

Tommy can’t understand why his dad is so sad about Elvis. Then he says his dad’s world ended a few months before, after a phone call.

••• I was on my own in the house. Mum and Dad were out visiting some friends, and I was alone. I liked being alone in the house. I was happy. ‘Now I can listen to my music, and watch whatever I want on the television,’ I thought to myself.

‘Tommy, we’re going out for a while1. We’ll be back before you go to bed,’ said Mum. Did she really mean it when she said those words?

Tommy’s mum and dad go out and leave him at home on his own.

His mum says they’ll be back before he goes to bed, but Tommy isn’t sure that she really meant what she said that day.

Tommy’s mother never comes back, but he doesn’t know this at the time. He’s happy to stay at home and pretend to be a pop star.

‘We’ll be back before you go to bed.’

Well, all I know is that she didn’t come back.

Mum and Dad didn’t tell me where they were going. They didn’t even say goodbye. But I didn’t think much about it.

Now I could turn up my music1 really loud. I chose one of my favourite songs and started to dance in front of the bedroom mirror. I liked to pretend2 that I was a rock star, and that I was on Top of the Pops, my favourite TV programme.

Sometimes I was the singer, and sometimes the guitarist3. But most of the time I was both. I was on my own, and I could be whoever I wanted to be.

It was great fun.

There is no speeding ticket, There is no parking fine, We are feeling free.

There is no name or number, No way, no road, no wonder, We are feeling free.

I was singing to my fans1, and just about to start my guitar solo when … I heard the phone ring.

‘Oh no!’ I thought. This doesn’t happen to real rock stars.’

I turned the music off, and stopped being Freddy Mercury. I became Tommy Evans again.

Normal, ordinary2 , boring Tommy Evans. I picked up the phone, and I heard a woman crying. It took me a little while to understand who it was.

It was my mum.

‘Tommy, don’t worry,’ she said. ‘There’s something I have to tell you.’

‘Don’t worry about what?’ I said to myself.

‘I want you to know that I love you very much,’ she said.

‘I know that,’ I thought. ‘Why’s she telling me this now?’

‘But … I’m not coming home tonight. I’ve left your dad. You see, I – I don’t, I mean. We, Dad and me, well we don’t love each other anymore. And there’s someone else. Another man. But you have to know. I love you Tommy. I’ll always love you.’

After his mum’s phone call, Tommy doesn’t want to dance anymore.

He looks in the mirror and sees that his face is sad but also interesting.

This is the first time that anything has ever happened to him.

And then she put the phone down. I stood there in the hall for a moment, not knowing what to think, not knowing how to feel. At first, I didn’t feel anything. I kept1 remembering my mum’s voice saying those words.

‘I’ve left your dad … we don’t love each other anymore … there’s someone else.’

But it didn’t seem2 to mean anything to me.

Such things belonged to stories, and poems, and films. It was nothing to do with me.

Was it?

I went back to my bedroom, and looked in the mirror again. I didn’t turn the music on this time.

I just didn’t feel like3 dancing anymore. I saw a different person in front of me. It was still me, but in some way I looked different.

And then I realised4 .

‘Something has happened to me. Nothing has ever happened to me before,’ I said to myself.

I looked more closely5 at my face. It looked sad, but it also looked interesting.

‘It’s like, I’m in a film. I’m the star of a film,’ I said to myself. ‘Something has happened to me!’

‘I’m a bad person,’ I thought. ‘People usually cry when something like this happens.’ Why can’t I cry? That’s what happens in a film. But I didn’t cry. I just couldn’t. In some way, like a film, it didn’t feel real. It didn’t feel like it was really happening to me. A part of me still believed that Mum and Dad were together, that everything was normal.

I thought it was all a big mistake. And so I waited.

Everything was so confusing1.

But when Dad came back, by himself, everything changed. It all became real again. It wasn’t a film anymore. Dad stood there, by the door, with his head down. He seemed lost. He was at home, the place he knew best, but it was like he didn’t know where he was.

And then he cried. It felt strange. I wasn’t crying, but he was. It was like I was the man, and he was the boy.

That night in my bed, I couldn’t sleep. My bed is too big for me really. Mum and Dad gave it to

Tommy lies in bed listening to his dad moving about.

Then he starts to cry and can’t stop. The next morning he really wants to go to school because things have stayed the same there, not like at home.

I liked to feel all the cold corners of the bed that my body normally couldn’t reach2. This usually helped me to sleep. But that night I could hear Dad upstairs, moving boxes, and walking up and down. Then I heard him go out. After a while he came back, but he didn’t go to bed.

I couldn’t sleep either3. I thought about Mum crying, and telling me that she loved me. I asked myself so many times who this other man was.

And I thought about Dad. He was lost. Lost in his own home.

And then finally, I started crying. Once I started to cry I couldn’t turn it off. I cried, and cried and cried, until I fell asleep4 .

When I got up in the morning, I couldn’t wait to get to school. ‘I need to go somewhere where everything is the same as the day before, and where everything will be the same the next day,’ I thought. I got dressed quickly and had breakfast.

On my way out I didn’t see Dad. He was sleeping, and I didn’t want to wake him up. Maybe he was dreaming, and in his dream he was still with Mum. I didn’t want him to wake up to the truth.

I put on my coat and scarf, and started my journey to school. It was a cold, windy day. I looked up. It wasn’t raining, but there was a big cloud that covered most of the sky. It looked like1 a hungry black cat, about to jump on something and eat it.

At the top of my road, I noticed2 something strange. There was a photo on the ground3. It was a photo of Mum, but it was only half a photo.

I picked it up. I could see Mum’s face. She was smiling. It was probably a holiday photo because Mum looked quite brown. But I couldn’t see the person she was standing next to. That piece of the photo was missing. Maybe Dad was in the other half of the photo. I put the photo in my pocket.

I looked around for the other half. But I couldn’t find it anywhere. It wasn’t there.

I started walking again, along the road to my

On his way to school, Tommy finds a photo of his mum, but a piece is missing. He puts the photo in his pocket.

Tommy’s dad threw away all the photos with Tommy’s mum in them, to try and forget her.

Tommy will never forget his mum.

Tommy tries to think of different things to stop him thinking about his mum and dad. Thinking about music makes him feel better.

Music always makes him feel happy.

school. But I couldn’t stop thinking about that photo – that half a photo. ‘That’s why Dad went out again last night,’ I thought. ‘He wanted to throw away all the photos – to help him to forget.

Well I won’t forget Mum. I’ll never forget her.’

I tried to think of other things. I didn’t want to think of Mum and Dad all the time. I didn’t want to cry again.

I tried to think about the homework that I still had to do, and about something funny that happened at school the other day. Then I thought about when I went with my best friend, Colin, to the Science Museum in London. But I couldn’t think of these things for very long.

I started to think again of the night before.

‘Everything is going to change now,’ I said to myself.

But then I thought about music, and I began to feel a little better. I listen to music all the time. It always makes me feel happy.

As I walked, I started to sing a little song that was in my head. It was a song about a girl I liked at school.

‘Time after time, Don’t lose your mind.

Time after time, In my free world.

In my true love’ Tommy sings to himself and thinks that maybe one day he’ll sing that song with his band.

I sang this song to myself over and over again while I was walking. And then I started to think.

‘One day I’ll sing this song with my band.’ I’m in a band with my friends. We’re called, ‘The Sad Road’ and we only play once a week in my friend’s garage. We don’t play for anyone else. We just play for ourselves, but it’s so much fun.

The noise of children playing football brings Tom back to the present.

‘GOAL!’ shouted a boy in the street.

Some children were playing football, and this noise took me away from the past and brought me back to the present.

I thought about that song. While I was singing that song to myself, Dad was at home, alone. His world, all that he knew, was no more on that cold

winter evening, when Mum told him there was somebody else. It was strange really. Now, these things happen much more often, but in 1977 …

I hear a voice, whispering to me. It’s calling me. I recognise it immediately. I’m running into the house.

I have something to tell my father. It’s my voice again.

Elvis Presley Tommy’s dad is a great fan of Elvis Presley.

He was so sad when he died. He wasn’t the only one to like his music. Elvis Presley is one of the most famous rock stars of all time, and you can still hear his songs everywhere.

Early Life

Elvis Presley was born in Tupelo, Mississippi, on 8th January, 1935.

He didn’t have any brothers or sisters. As a child he listened to a lot of country music, and he liked

listening to music when he went to church. As a boy he was very shy, and didn’t like to sing in front of other people. He was very close to his mother, and she was a big influence on his life.

Simply Elvis

Things changed for Elvis when he sang for Sun Records in late 1955. A man named Sam Phillips listened to him, and he understood that Elvis could become a big star. It didn’t take long to see that Sam Phillips was right. In 1956 Elvis was already famous around the world. In the story, Tommy talks about the songs Teddy Bear and Jailhouse Rock. But there are many more famous songs that people love: songs like Heartbreak Hotel, All Shook Up, In the Ghetto and Return to Sender. In his life Elvis sold over a billion records, more than any other rock star. This is why many people call Elvis Presley simply Elvis.

Film Star

Elvis was also a famous film star. He made thirty-three films, singing many songs that became famous. Films like Love Me Tender, King Creole, Viva Las Vegas, Blue Hawaii, and Frankie and Johnny were very popular all over the world.

The Legend

Elvis Presley died on August 16th, 1977, and that’s where our story, Dot to Dot begins.

Millions of people still listen to and enjoy his music today. There are many people who say that rock and roll is the way it is today, because of Elvis Presley.

Uniforms

Students at school in Britain have to wear a school uniform. Many students don’t like this because they want to wear their own clothes.

They want to be able to choose the clothes they like. But there are some people who think it’s better to have a school uniform. They say that uniforms give children the feeling that they belong to something important. They also think that it helps children who do not have enough money to spend on clothes. Everybody looks the same, rich or poor. What do you think about school uniforms? Do you think that all children should wear them?

In the 1970s, boys and girls in Britain went to school together. They sometimes did different things. And went to different places. The school playground is one example, but there are others. Some of the lessons that boys and girls did were different. Boys did metalwork and woodwork lessons, and girls did cookery and needlework. Now this has changed and boys can do cookery and girls can do woodwork. Are there any lessons at your school that only boys or girls do?

1977 – Jimmy Carter

Carter as a child

1977 was the year that Jimmy Carter became the 39th president of the USA. Many people were surprised when he became the President.

In many ways he wasn’t a typical president. Read below to find out something about his life.

Jimmy Carter was born in 1924 in Georgia. His father was a peanut farmer, and his mother worked as a nurse. The area where Jimmy Carter grew up was was a long way from the big cities that are so famous in the USA. Carter studied hard and did well at school, but he also began working for his father when he was ten years old. In his free time, he went to baseball games with his father, and listened to music on the radio.

People in Carter’s family didn’t go to school very much. They went to work instead of going to school. But Jimmy Carter wasn’t like that.

School was important to him. In 1941, he became the first person in his family to finish high school.

Carter as a father

Jimmy Carter joined the navy after school, and went to places like Pearl Harbour in Hawaii. He did very well in the navy and became an officer on the ship USS Pomfret.

He married a woman he met when he was a child. Her name was Rosalynn Smith, and they got married in June 1946. They had three sons and one daughter.

Carter the politician

Carter entered politics when he was thirtyone years old.

He wasn’t a typical leader, and people didn’t think at first that he was going to be successful. But he surprised everyone in 1977 when he led his party to success in the presidential election.

He was the President until 1981.

Carter the Peacemaker

After this, he worked on projects around the world that tried to stop suffering. Many people know about Jimmy Carter for another reason. He was given the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002 for his work on these important projects.
