A month after her election and a month until her inauguration, Hanks is in the middle of her transition to public office. She’s meeting with Councilmember Rose soon and is confident that the transition will be “smooth and seamless.”

In her first hundred days, Hanks plans to familiarize herself with the issues and understand what her constituents are thinking. She also plans on meeting with several nonprofit organizations and political groups.

“We really are doing a deep dive because that’s the underpinning of the master plan,” Hanks said. “We just have to get smart about the existing conditions that we are entering in. The kids appreciated James Harden’s basketball insights

The newly named Brooklyn Nets Basketball Academy presented by adidas, reflective of the Nets’ new multiyear partnership with the brand, has set a clear focus centered around connecting with the youth community through basketball. On Nov. 29, the Nets celebrated the launch of the partnership with a basketball clinic for more than 130 kids from six community organizations.

Hosted by James Harden, the boys and girls learned more about the game and got a boost of confidence. “The Academy, while it develops basketball skills and that’s certainly important, it really focuses on teaching skills that you can take with you through life, like resilience, teamwork, goal-setting,” said Mandy Gutmann, executive vice president communications and community relations, BSE Global, parent company of the Nets and Barclays Center.

“Girls are fans of the Nets too, and we want to make sure they have that connection to the team and benefit from those off-the-court skills,” said Gutmann. “[At the clinic] James shared a little bit about people who inspired him and the coaches that made a difference in his life. That can make a tremendous impact on a little boy or a little girl. For them to have the ability to hear his story and hear what got him to the level that he’s at, that makes (Mike Lawrence photo) a difference. “We were excited to see the turnout at the event, to have such a large representation of girls who were really good basketball players come out and show off their skills,” she added. “We were super impressed by them.”

Gutmann said the Nets organization wants to have a diverse workplace that represents New York City and the team’s fan base and that preparing girls with life skills today will pay dividends in the future. Having adidas as a partner enables the Nets to expand the team’s reach, host more clinics and camps and even have “cooler gear for the kids,” said Gutmann.

Upcoming events include a holiday camp Dec. 28, 29 and 30, which is open to boys and girls. It’s designed to build a strong foundation for basketball and also keep kids moving during the winter. International Women’s Day on March 8 will bring some special programming for girls. Next summer, of course the New York Liberty return to Barclays. There will also be Nets summer camps throughout the tri-state area.

“We’re planning to have more camps than we’ve ever had before with the Brooklyn Nets, which gives more boys and girls the opportunity to be a part of it,” said Gutmann.

Nearly two years and counting, COVID still disrupts the sports landscape

It was March of 2020 when sports competitions were essentially shut down around the world as the global COVID-19 pandemic began to take hold. Although there has been a relative return to customary engagement, there is a palpable new normalcy and COVID is still disrupting the sports landscape. The term COVID protocols has become a common term of the sports vernacular.

Daily sports reports are filled with numerous players and coaches on the professional and collegiate levels who are in COVID protocols. Some teams and programs have multiple key players and personnel simultaneously in the protocols. It is inevitable that COVID will be a substantial influence in shaping the conclusion of the NFL regular season as teams battle for playoff spots and seedings in the closing weeks.

Already the issue of players choosing not to get vaccinated or attempting to mislead their teams and or the public has been controversial and consequential. Last week, Tampa Bay Buccaneers wide receiver Antonio Brown was suspended without pay for three games by the league for misrepresenting his vaccination status.

Brown, who is now vaccinated, presented a fake vaccination card to the team at the start of training camp in July. Two other players, Buccaneers safety Mike Edwards and wide receiver John Franklin III, who was waived by Tampa Bay in August, were also suspended for misrepresenting their vaccination status. Brown and Edwards will be eligible to return on Dec. 26, Week 16 of the season, when the Bucs face the Carolina Panthers.

COVID has shown its resiliency as the Delta variant persists in causing death and severe illness, and the newly identified and perhaps more transmissible variant Omicron is eliciting widespread concern. Philadelphia 76ers AllNBA center Joel Embiid’s bout with COVID has amplified the realization among his peers and fans that the virus can beat down even the strongest, most well conditioned men and women.

Embiid missed nine games after contracting COVID in early November. He returned to the Sixers lineup on Nov. 27 and candidly discussed his humbling and painful experience.

“[It hit]…me hard,” said Embiid after scoring 42 points and grabbing 14 rebounds in a 121-120 76ers victory against the Minnesota Timberwolves two days following Thanksgiving. The 27-yearold four-time All-Star, whose vaccination status has not been made public, explained he labored to breathe and endured agonizing headaches far worse than migraines.

“I really thought I wasn’t going to make it. It was that bad,” he expounded. “So, I’m just thankful to be sitting here. I struggled with it, but I’m just glad I got over it and I’m just here…The whole body was just done, I guess. It was not a good time.”

Howard University women’s volleyball after capturing the MEAC title

While precautions are still in place due to the pandemic, fall sports took place on schedule. For Howard University women’s volleyball, it was a purposeful return to action as the Bison claimed its six MidEastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Championship in seven seasons and earned a trip to the 2021 NCAA Division I Women’s Volleyball Tournament.

The team includes two outstanding freshmen, twin sisters Bria and Cimone Woodard, both 6-foot-3. In the MEAC championship game over Delaware State, Cimone, a middle blocker, led the Bison with 10 kills, eight digs and six total blocks and was named the tournament’s Most Outstanding Player. Bria said the team was meticulous in its pre-match scouting. Cimone said they watched a lot of film.

“The MEAC tournament was an amazing experience,” said Bria, an outside hitter and the MEAC’s Rookie of the Year. “We also got to watch all the other teams compete as well, which was really cool to see; seeing all of the great competition happening in Burr Gym [at Howard] was almost surreal.”

Although Cimone took up volleyball a year before Bria, they’ve played together ever since and couldn’t imagine separating for their collegiate experience. They play different positions so they’re often side by side on the court. Having grown up playing on predominantly white teams, they intentionally selected Howard, a renowned HBCU institution.

“Honestly, we love Howard,” said Bria. “I love going to a mostly Black school. This is a really cool change for me. Being around people that look like you all the time, who are smart and driven is, of course, amazing.”

“I love the HBCU experience,” said Cimone. “It’s not only athletes, but everybody is Black and it’s really cool.”

Heading into the NCAA Tournament, they were excited to see collegiate volleyball at the highest level and they were focused on playing their best. “We’ve been watching the tournament every year,” said Bria. “It’s crazy we’re actually going to be playing in it.”

The Bison knew that its first-round opponent, the tournament’s ninth seed Ohio State, would be tough, and that proved to be the case. Ohio State prevailed 3–0. Bria had five kills against the Buckeyes and Cimone added four kills.

Volleyball has been their main focus these past few months, but they will likely up their activity on social media now that the season is done. “We have to start thinking of ideas,” said Bria. “When we have time for TikTok, it’s always a blast.”

Wagner College women’s hoops is entering a new era

It is a new era for Wagner College women’s basketball. The team’s firstseason head coach Terrell Coburn was named this past April, the program’s first African American head coach. While Coburn is setting a precedent, he isn’t new to the Seahawks, having spent the previous five years as an assistant coach with the team.

“The first thing is the physical preparation,” said Coburn after Wagner opened its season 5–1. “That started in the summertime and they really bought into the conditioning, playing a lot and building cohesion with each other.”

Coburn described himself as a defensive-minded coach, so the players knew they would be going all-in. They talked about preparation, consistency, holding each other accountable and steady improvement.

While Coburn didn’t initially know he was the first African American head coach in program history, he’s pleased to carry that mantle. He’s long had the vision of being a head coach, and just like he asks of his players, he puts in the consistent effort to achieve it.

“I want to be a positive influence and represent leadership,” said Coburn. “What we’ve done in our program is equip each individual with different levels [of leadership] based on their progress and on where they’re at in their lives. The biggest thing with leadership is building relationships, being a positive influence and being of service. I want to be able to instill some of those different tools in our young women. … The biggest level of leadership is building more leaders.”

Coburn has been a vital part of building a winning culture at Wagner. “My time here as an assistant…we didn’t win a lot of games, but we built mental toughness and fortitude,” he said. “Helping them understand that basketball is a bridge to get to your life and you’ll be able to take these experiences and carry over these positive habits into adulthood. That starts with recruiting like-minded individuals that love the game and want to get better.”

In national college basketball news, March Madness just got more festive. The NCAA Division I Council approved an expansion of the Division I Women’s Basketball Tournament from 64 to 68 teams, effective in 2022. The decision is driven by gender equity issues raised at this year’s Tournament, which led to an external review. For this season, the four opening round games will take place on the campuses of teams seeded in the top 16. Starting in 2023, the first four games will be conducted at a neutral site.

Although it is not a common circumstance, NFL teams have made the postseason with a rookie starting quarterback. The 9-4 New England Patriots are currently the top seed in the AFC with first-year QB Mac Jones, who was the 15th overall pick in the first round in last April’s draft.

The Jets also have a rookie quarterback, Zach Wilson, who was drafted 13 picks higher than Jones, chosen No. 2, but is on the other end of the spectrum. The Jets are in last place in the AFC East at 3-9 and have the third lowest win total in the league.

Whereas New England has their eyes on the playoffs and making a run for the Super Bowl, the Jets are focused on small, incremental steps. This past Sunday’s 33-18 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles at MetLife Stadium can be viewed as progress for both Wilson and the team. Wilson put up three touchdowns in the first half, two during the first quarter. In total he threw for two and ran for one, going 23-38 for 226 yards and one interception. “Yeah, there were definitely improvements,” said Wilson after the game. Wilson noted he was able to make better decisions in limiting turnovers. In the season, in eight games played—he’s sat out four due to injury—Wilson has passed for 1,539 yards and has had 11 interceptions to just six touchdown passes.

“His footwork was awesome,” said head coach Robert Saleh, complimentary of his QB’s

overall play. “I thought this was, (Bill Moore photo) by far, his best game in terms of just working progressions and playing within the scheme.” Wilson’s performance versus the 6-7 Eagles came a week after his return after missing four straight recovering from a sprained PCL in his right knee. He helped the Jets earn a 21-14 road win against the Houston Texans. But against the Eagles, Wilson and the offense couldn’t make up for the Jets’ poor defense. Eagles backup quarterback Gardner Minshew, filling in for injured starter Jalen Hurts, was 20-25 for 242 yards and Philly controlled the ball throughout the second half. “It felt so good, man,” said Minshew of leading the Eagles Jets rookie quarterback Zach Wilson threw for two touchdowns and ran for one in his to victory. “There’s nothing like team’s 33-18 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles at MetLife Stadium this past Sunday that feeling. Glad to do it with this group of guys. They made it easy for me.” The Jets will play the New Orleans Saints this Sunday (1 p.m.) at MetLife Stadium.

Questionable organizational decisions have plagued the Giants’ offense

Irrespective of who designs the Giants’ offensive game plan, calls the plays or is quarterbacking the team, the unit’s production and outcomes are consistently inadequate, well below what is required to be competitive.

Since Jason Garrett, the Giants’ former offensive coordinator, was fired a little over two weeks ago and assistant coach Freddie Kitchens assumed the role of coordinator and play caller, the Giants have scored a total of just 22 points and manufactured only two touchdowns in two games, a 13-7 home win over the Philadelphia Eagles in Week 12 and a 20-9 road loss to the Miami Dolphins this past Sunday.

Groupthink has pervaded some circles of those who closely follow the Giants or identify as diehard fans in placing most of the accountability for the team’s years of futility on general manager Dave Gettleman. He was hired by co-owners John Mara and Steve Tisch in December of 2017 to replace Jerry Reese, who was instrumental in helping to construct the Giants’ 2008 and 2012 Super Bowl winning teams.

Gettleman had previously been with the Giants from 1999-2011 as the director of pro personnel, then in 2012 served as the senior pro personnel analyst before becoming the Carolina Panthers GM

from 2013-2017. The 70-yearold executive is certainly largely responsible for the Giants’ 19-41 record and no playoff appearances with five games remaining this season since he’s been at the helm. However, it’s willful denial to simplify the issues as being fundamentally attributable to Gettleman. The Giants’ offense has come to symbolize both tangibly and philosophically an organizational culture that has arguably been an impediment to progress on the field. The Giants are famously overly conser-

vative and cautious in assessing quarterbacks. Optics are as seemingly important as ability. They prefer a vanilla, buttoned-down presence under center to be the face of the franchise. An Eli Manning archetype, which they ostensibly saw in Daniel Jones.

While many reference the Giants’ drafting of running back Saquon Barkley with the No. 2 overall pick in 2018 as Gettleman’s most egregious and ruinous decision, foregoing selecting a quarterback in the first round, picking Jones,

who many saw as a Manning clone, at No. 6 in round one a year later, has been debatably a more damaging decision.

Only Baltimore Ravens QB Lamar Jackson, the 2019 NFL MVP, who was the 32nd and last first round pick in 2018, and the Buffalo’s Bills’ Josh Allen, taken at No. 7, have proven to be so-called franchise quarterbacks. Jackson didn’t fit the Giants’ cookiecutter cast and Allen’s reported character issues perhaps factored into him not being a viable candidate.

The Cleveland Browns’ Baker Mayfield, the No. 1 pick, the Carolina Panthers’ Sam Darnold, taken third by the Jets, and Josh Rosen, chosen No. 10 by the Arizona Cardinals, have performed well below expectations and Mayfield is the lone starter among the group.

Yet it came down to Gettelman and the Giants reasonably viewing Barkley as a transformational running back in the face of the modern NFL perspective that using a high pick to draft a running back is imprudent given the declining analytics driven value placed on the position.

But taking a QB at or near the top of the first round that doesn’t evolve into an elite player can be disastrous and it can take years to recover from the fallout. The Giants may be there with Jones. They can move on from the 24-year-old from Duke, who is sidelined with a neck injury, missed this past Sunday’s loss and may not return this season, and begin to search for a long-term answer at the position again this offseason.
