METAPOD

ARCH 320

Exploring form with paper modeling

Using self-invented techniques of folding and manipulation to turn a piece of letter-size paper into a tanglible form.

The design and name are derived from the pokemon, Metapod; which is in turn based on a caterpillar.

I started by folding a given sheet of paper into a rectangular diamond shape. After doing so, I used a “ribbing technique to give the form its layers.

SHAPE

GENERATION HIERARCHY FORM + SPACE

ARCH 320 + 325

Developing form through geometric precedence.

A series of successive projects initated by SHAPE generation, a design exercise of line placement restricted by a set of rules.

One of these generated shapes is chosen as the foundation for Hierarchy, where line weights are utilized to emphasize certain elements of the shape.

The supplemented line weights imply the creation of spaces that are built upon in FORM AND SPACE, which transforms HIEARCHY into the third dimension.

THE FOLLY

ARCH 326 + 321

Connecting two worlds

path of travel

Three geometric structures are joined by a bridge walk that connects a nearby transit station to Cosumnes River College.

In architecture, the path of travel is essential in design; by code, it must be shown in construction documentation. By establishing an additional structure that defines the relation between the three geometries, pedestrian movement becomes a principal tenet of the folly.

The folly removes a section of a campus parking lot and enhances its existing walkway. Each geometry explores form in a varying manner, “interjecting” themselves into the path of travel; encouraging users to stay and interact.

CHAOS AND ORDER

ARCH 330

Materializing the subjectivity of one’s life.

I interviewed a peer about the definition of chaos and order in their life; subsequently designing a model based on their view.

Chaos and order are inherent to our existence. Chaos isn’t necessarily bad; it brings excitement. Our youth is chaotic; but softens as we grow into orderly, structured lives. A balance exists between the two, fluctuating and fluttering throughout our lives.

THREE SPACES

ARCH 330

Design for a selected artist-client

We were tasked to respond to a program that called for three primary spaces; gallery, reading room, and studio, for an artist-client using the architectural style of a selected architect.

Picasso was a community organizer throughout his life. In homage to his efforts, the center not only serves as a space for his practice, but that of the general public.

My intention was to create a community space that encourages engagement in the arts.

VOLUME

Exploring Gestalt; a unified whole.

My approach was to create an abstracted shape within an implied cube defined by a wood grid-structure. The shape’s materiality is defined by opaque, 3D printed panels. The abstraction is framed such that each perspective generates a different, angular view. Certain “grids” of the implied shape are kept open; adding to the visual effect.

INTERPRETIVE CENTER ARCH 322

Educating the urban dweller about sustainability.

Nestled in the heart of Sacramento county, the center is integral to a master plan to enhance Soil Born Farms as a hub for agricultural education.

The center fulfills program requirements to provide farm staff with much needed facilities in administrative, educational, and communal spaces. The center takes a learn-by-doing approach for environmentally conscious practices.

The existing site had much potential for design work. Its location along the banks of the American River and proximity to local schools makes it ideal for an interpretive center.

Vicinity Map Master Plan

The design was born out of a series of iterations I made on tracing paper. I developed my parti sketches out of two axes that define the building’s footprint, which were created out of my analysis of the site. I oriented public spaces such as the roof deck, garden, classroom, and community room towards views of the American river.

I also created a series of indoor-outdoor spaces that break the building into three distinct masses, using principles of negative and positive space.

TINY HOME

ARCH 329

Apprenticeship housing for Soil Born Farms.

The tiny home acts as a two-fold solution to the need for farmer-apprentice housing and desire to reduce the human footprint on the site. The 400 (+/-) Sq. ft. structure can be built on a trailer or concrete foundation. Multiple units are arranged to form a community within the farm.

The structure offers a comfortable, warm space that is tailored to the domocile needs of residents learning about the land at Soil Born farms. The tiny home is equipped with a sleeping loft, study space, kitchenette, and bathroom.

AMOEBA

Exploration of CNC

I designed a bench with components that connect without the need for glue or fasteners. Each piece is joined by a “slot” technique that allows the bench to be taken apart and assembled repeatedly.

The bench resembles the biological cell, Amoeba, in its curvature and lack of rigidity - each piece flows into one another.
