STILL ROLLING

NORTE’S 2020 JOURNEY As I reflect on this journey, I’m reminded that our gorgeous corner of the world, Northern Michigan, isn’t immune to ongoing global challenges. This past year made that abundantly clear and reinforced why our work for healthy, happy, strong communities is critical. Before the pandemic, the crises of climate change, inequality, racism, and public health were ever-present. The pandemic only made them more apparent and urgent. These hurdles can only be overcome with imagination and action to do better. Right now. Not tomorrow. Today. We can no longer wait for the right time or proceed with business as usual. At Norte, imagine and act we did. Last year, Team Orange didn’t hit the easy button. We responded. And we seized on the opportunity to do better in pursuit of: • Active-for-life kids and families. • S afe and equitable access for all, including sidewalks, bike lanes, slower cars, and healthy parks that support it. • S ocial connections and community that empower all of us to pursue our dreams and be our best selves. In 2020, Norte deepened our commitment to helping communities elevate health to the forefront of policies, budgets, and priorities. We did this through an ongoing commitment to education, system-wide introspection, and ever-ready preparedness to respond to new opportunities. As we move forward, join us in our pursuit of complete neighborhoods designed around our children’s needs—body, heart, and mind—so that they are free to play outside and safely roam. And, as adults, let’s join them a little more often. As you look through the following pages, I hope you enjoy reflecting back on happy, healthy, strong as much as I have. 2020 was a big year for little Norte, and we’re prepared for more and better. We’re 100% committed to this work. Let’s keep it rolling and continue to imagine and act every day on behalf of those who live in this fantastic place we call home. In health and hope, Ty Schmidt, Executive Director

FOSTERING CONNECTIONS ACROSS NORTHERN MICHIGAN BY LAUREN DAKE

On an early winter weekend last year, I enjoyed my first ski of the season on the Vasa trail. I passed many happy and energetic faces, all excited to be outdoors and enjoying everything that northern Michigan has to offer. As I glided into the trailhead, a smiling face greeted me.

at seven trailheads in three counties. Our Estrellas program has put hundreds of kids on balance bikes. And, community slow rolls roll weekly in the summer in Traverse City and Elk Rapids. Do you want to host one in your community? Norte can help.

“Do you work at Norte?” the skier next to me asked, nodding to my very orange Norte winter hat. “Yes, I do,” I replied proudly. My new friend Laura exclaimed, “You all do such great work for our community. We love what you do!”

It seems the color orange has caught on. We firmly believe that everyone deserves a happy, healthy, strong community, and we are here to help make that happen.

Thank you, Laura. I speak for all of Team Orange when I say that we love what we do, too. It puts a smile on all of our faces when we see people’s faces light up at the sight of Norte gear. It is a validation of our work and recognition that what we do comes from caring about others and a dedication to making our community better—happy, healthy, strong communities. In a short six-year span, Norte has grown from a handful of young riders tooling around Traverse City to working with communities across the Grand Traverse region. We’re now encouraging active-for-life kids and families from Northport and Suttons Bay to Traverse City, out in Kalkaska, and along East Bay to Elk Rapids. The list keeps growing—this spring, we will go further into Antrim and out to Benzie. What does this expansion look like? It means Norte bike libraries are in multiple locations. Last fall, we had 40 coaches who led mountain bikers 4 2020 NORTE ANNUAL REPORT

It is an honor to be Norte’s Outreach Coordinator. One of my jobs is to foster connections across Northern Michigan. I’m here to listen and see how Norte can help. We know our programs and voice bring our neighbors together for a happier, healthier, stronger region—from bike libraries and summer camps to slow rolls to Cranksgiving. The Grand Traverse region is our home, and together we stand. Another part of my job is connecting with people like Laura, who I may just bump into on the trail. I hope to run into many of you soon. If you see me, say hello. And, yes, Laura, we love what we do, and we love you, too.

Say hi to Lauren and Mira when you see them out in orange. 2020 NORTE ANNUAL REPORT 5

STAY ACTI VE– RESPONSIBLY NORTE VS. COVID-19

NORTE’S COVID-19 TASK FORCE: BEN BOYCE GARY HOWE RYAN SCHROCK RACHAEL FRANKS TAYLOR

BY RACHAEL FRANKS TAYLOR 2020 was a bruiser.

The COVID-19 pandemic upended any sense of normalcy. Navigating what we naively thought might eventually settle into a “new normal,” most of us didn’t know what we were doing most of the time. Simple decisions were cast into an extraordinary new context, creating an exhausting conveyor belt of uncertainty. Many in our community are suffering from illness, isolation, or the ripple effects of the pandemic. We wrap our arms around those who have lost loved ones—safely and responsibly, from a distance. However, many of us have reason to be grateful. Here at Norte, we are thankful for the opportunities and lessons learned in 2020. It hasn’t been without disappointments, but how do you learn without a few scrapes here and there? Isn’t that what we teach at Summer Bike Camp? Looking back, Norte responded and delivered, including getting bikes to people in need of some wheels. We accomplished this with our everexpanding Bike Library, Essential program, and our first Norte TuneUp. A year ago, when the State of Michigan began to order closures, require masking and physical distancing in public spaces, and restrict gathering, Norte battened the hatches. March, April, and May were as uncertain for Norte as they were for everyone else, not knowing when or how we’d be able to resume programming. After three months of extreme uncertainty, restrictions eased. As a community, we took a deep breath and began to venture out. Here at Norte, we dedicated time and energy to safely navigate the pandemic. 6 2020 NORTE ANNUAL REPORT

The newly christened Norte COVID-19 Task Force closely followed and analyzed policy changes, local conditions, and advice from experts. How would this pandemic impact our services? Where was our place? Fortunately, as we approached Summer Bike Camp, Michigan’s curve began to flatten. And life opened up a bit more. The Task Force recommended Norte run summer programs, albeit with precautions and monitoring in place, ready to pull back if policies and our community’s numbers warranted. Our responsibility reached beyond our campers and staff; our new mantra extended to the community at large: Stay active—responsibly. Children that had been cooped up since schools abruptly closed midMarch were overjoyed to feel the freedom of two-wheels, riding the trails with small cohorts of their peers. Wind in the hair, smiles, and handwashing—lots of handwashing. But at the end of the season, more young riders than any previous summer had safely ridden their hearts out in summer camp. As the last week of camp rolled out in August, our fall programs were already filled. We don’t know what 2021 will bring. We do know that Norte will continue to respond with care, empathy, and a commitment to public health. We are committed more than ever to offering safe ways to support Northern Michigan’s youth, two wheels at a time.

MEASURING SUCCESS

MEMORIES, SMILES & GROWTH BY JESSIE WILLIAMS

The young riders who participate in Norte programs inspire us all as they inspire each other. The hours together are full of laughter, riding, running, exploring, and getting up close and personal with local landmarks. These are genuine moments of making memories. Our programming’s ultimate goal is to create active-for-life students who are confident and independent. Similarly, our community services are driven by the vision that everyone should have access to being active-forlife, no matter their background or situation. One critical way that Norte is building relationships with young riders is through the Grand Traverse Regional Kids’ Bike Library. As a free resource, our bike libraries open doors to forge all sorts of new connections. Throughout the year, the library helps old friends and introduces new friends to Norte. We help keep individuals rolling while assisting others with their first bike. Or, as happens sometimes, get moving again for the first time in a long time. One key partner for Norte’s bike library is McLain Cycle & Fitness. In 2020, they donated over 200 bikes, which allowed us to create more relationships with more families, schools, and community partners. We also placed 114 bikes into circulation at local schools and traditional libraries. They were incorporated into physical education classes and checked out to library patrons. We firmly believe that the skills cultivated due to having access to a bike carry over to the rest of their lives. Independent kids aren’t only free and 8 2020 NORTE ANNUAL REPORT

confident on the trails, they’re courageous leaders in their schools and communities. Things they discover on after-school rides turn into family excursions. We find that our young riders become tour guides excited to show off what they learned. We might spend three hours per week together or see each other only when it’s time for the next bike size up. Regardless, we want to see how the skills and resources your students take away from Norte have impacted their life. That’s why in 2020, we doubled down on our commitment to surveying the participants in Norte programs and in services such as the Community Bike Shop or Kids’ Bike Library. The insights and feedback of our fantastic participants always provide motivation and inspiration. We invite you to look through our past surveys and responses on the reports page of our website at elgruponorte.org. Here, we have our 2020 Kids’ Bike Library report, as well as post-program evaluations and stories for the 2020 Summer Bike Camp, the Fall 2020 Youth Mountain Bike Season, and the camp’s academic in-school impacts months later. Here’s to happy, healthy, strong, ready-to-learn, active-for-life, incredible Norte kids!

WITNESSING GREATNESS

ROLLING AS A NORTE COACH BY HANNAH THOMAS

When fall hit last year, my husband and I decided to keep our girls home for the semester. The uncertainty was too much. To cope with the added stress, I turned to what I’ve always known best—escaping to the woods. But this time, I went as a mountain bike coach for Norte. I brought my two daughters with me, ages 6 and 12. And my mom, age unknown but slightly older than 30. We signed up and hit the trails for the youth mountain bike team at Timber Ridge. I led, the girls rallied the five other young riders, and my mom rolled as the sweep. More girls on bikes indeed! Mountain Bike coaching provided me a space to be a kid again. It was an hour and a half of pure unadulterated fun. No news, no social media (except for Strava), and the opportunity to slow down, even when rolling fast. We came upon deer. Stopped to pet a patch of bright green moss and count mushrooms. In the excitement category, we often raced out of dangerous allosaurus territory. Even on the challenging days when the kids were tired and weren’t into it, we persisted. Let’s be honest, I had my off days too. Still, we understood how much we all needed the therapy of the woods. The trails serve as an outlet to let go of the stress. When the riding got hard, we focused our energy on things we were grateful for. We learned to set new intentions and change our thinking to see the good in the present moment. I’ve been an athlete my whole 10 2020 NORTE ANNUAL REPORT

life, but to witness the transformation in the mood of these kiddos from the start to the end was something that engulfed me in pride—for them and myself.

In these trying times of division, negativity, and fear, I was able to witness greatness. I had a group of six kids who had never met before, all with wonderfully different personalities. I watched new friendships blossom, and unconditional kindness, respect, and appreciation grow for our surroundings within my small group of six riders. Coaching also connected me with other fabulous coaches who I can now call friends. You may even spot us out cross-country skiing together. Imagine the impact taking all that good team energy into our communities! These kids are my role models. In reflecting on my coaching experience, I concluded that it is indeed a shared coaching experience. I learned just as many, if not more, essential lessons from the young riders on my team as they learned from me. I am reminded that their little eyes, heads, and hearts are always watching. It is my duty in coaching and daily life to be the kindest version of myself. Coaching is a privilege that allowed me to connect and see the world through the lens of a very bright future.

NORTE TUNEUP THE POWER OF GI VING BY BEN BOYCE

I love working on bikes. I enjoy the chance to ignore other distractions and focus on solving textile problems with my hands. Beginning with a bike that doesn’t work well and finishing with a bike that rolls almost effortlessly is pure satisfaction. Our mission demands that we give back. Happy, healthy, strong isn’t only for children and the people who partake in our programs. A happy, healthy, strong community is for everyone. And the one thing I know I can do to help make that happen is to help others ride smoothly. “Why don’t we fix up some bikes for folks who might need it?” This was the suggestion that Gary and I offered during an all-staff planning session in early October. We were brainstorming what Norte might do for Giving Tuesday—a day that encourages people to do good on the first Tuesday after Thanksgiving.

The idea of wrenching for others for a day fired me up, and Norte TuneUp was born. For this inaugural event, we teamed up with Goodwill Northern Michigan to set up a mobile shop at the Carson Square Apartments supportive housing community. When the day ended, we had fixed up over two dozen bikes and given away another 16. We made new friends and shared the opportunity to give back. We also learned the value of true community partnership. For Norte TuneUp, individuals chipped in where they could all in the name of making a difference in the lives of residents of Carson Square Apartments. On that cold day, we brought bikes back to life and provided essential transportation to people who need it most. Norte TuneUp showed how community partnership can bring old friends together to volunteer. It showed the potential of putting our minds together to give back. 12 2020 NORTE ANNUAL REPORT

Community partnership is also local bike shops—all of them—lending us tents for shelter and being there for us all year. It’s volunteer mechanics putting their skills to the test outside the Wheelhouse. It’s Recycle-aBicycle and local legend Don Cunkle recognizing a valuable effort and insisting on representing, despite his own backlog of bikes in need of wrenching. Community partnership is Goodwill Northern Michigan hosting us with hot chili and cornbread. The beauty of it is that what started out as a simple desire to fix up bikes will continue to make a positive impact thanks to all those who donated to support future Norte TuneUps. On Giving Tuesday, Norte also raised nearly $4,000 that we will use to host additional pop-up tune ups in Northern Michigan. I know I’m looking forward to turning more wrenches and getting more bikes running smoothly in 2021.

BIKE+: In the summer of 2020, we expanded our Summer Bike Camp by working with partners to offer campers a full-day experience. With Traverse Area Community Sailing, Parallel 45 Theatre, and Traverse Bay Area Youth Soccer, Norte’s young riders had full, safe days of outdoor activity. This opportunity meant more time spent with friends, and more time off screens. Together, TACS, P45, TBAYS, and Norte made Bike+Kick, Bike+Play, and Bike+Sail happen.

CONSERVATION RESOURCE ALLIANCE: We’re proud to have partnered with the CRA to distribute over 600 seedlings to new homes as part of Plant Grand Traverse. Trees are an essential part of healthy communities. Like walking and rolling, they’re part of solving the climate crisis. FOOD RESCUE: We were grateful to partner with Goodwill Northern Michigan’s Food Rescue program in rolling out our third successful Cranksgiving in Northern Michigan. This past November, over 50 teams collected 3,000+ pounds of food in Elk Rapids, Suttons Bay, and Traverse City for distribution to area food pantries and community meal sites. SCHOOLS: When our winter programs paused due to the pandemic, we got creative. PE teachers at Grand Traverse Academy and Suttons Bay Schools worked with Norte to create bike lessons using bicycles from Norte’s expanding bike library. Additionally, bikes rolled out to partners across Northern Michigan. Bicycles lead to freedom, independence, opportunity, and health. We’re thrilled to have partners who share our goal of getting kids moving. Let’s keep it rolling!

COMMUNITY PARTNERS

Norte is fortunate to have countless incredible partner organizations who work with us so that we can do more good in the community through partnership. Thank you, friends. The community is richer when we work together. Here are a few examples from the past year.

2020 ANNUAL REPORT FOR NORTE 19

MAPPING THE WAY FORWARD NORTE’S STRATEGIC PLAN BY CHRIS HINZE

We’ve all been there as the sun starts to descend and darkness is taking over the woods. Yet, you’re nowhere close to the trailhead. A feeling of panic hits your belly. Maybe you turned left when you should have gone right? Did I see that tree earlier? Am I lost? Will I be able to find my way back before dark? But then with a sigh of relief, you remember you have a map. You take it out, zero in on your position, and chart a course back to your trailhead. An organization can get lost, as well. An organization’s trail map is its strategic plan. Without one, they’re just blazing along trails in the woods. Exhilarating, sure, but also exhausting, dangerous, and disrespectful to everyone in the party. A detailed and accurate map ensures an organization can find its way no matter the terrain, the weather, or the challenges. As 2020 came to a close, Norte decided to recalibrate our map—our strategic plan—based on what we learned in our earlier years and in responding to this stressful and challenging year. Our destination is our mission, and our current strategic plan is our trail map towards it. At Norte, we will build stronger, better connected, and more walk/bike-friendly communities by empowering the young and young at heart. We have four focus areas that guide us toward that destination:

• ACTI VE-FOR-LIFE KIDS •H APPY, HEALTHY, STRONG COMMUNITIES • GRASSROOTS ADVOCACY • A LEVELED UP TEAM ORANGE 20 2020 NORTE ANNUAL REPORT

Each independent yet interconnected focus area is vital to transforming the culture of health in the Grand Traverse region. Most importantly, we have an incredible team working hard to help us achieve this mission—a rocking staff, dedicated volunteers, and an engaged board. Thank you to the community for your unwavering support of Norte. Your gifts of time, money, and heart allow us to keep rolling, even when the trail gets bumpy or we miss a turn and need to pull out the map. In Gratitude, Chris Hinze, Board President
