Theoriginsofposterstracebacktotheinventionof Lithographyin1798 [1] andtheprocesshasevolved quitesignificantlyovertime.Inthe1980s,silkscreen printsproducedbyartistssuchasFrankKozikgained popularityandultimatelyledtoscreenprintingbecoming themostprominentformofposterproduction [2].Inthe pre-Internetera,concertposters(andflyers)wereonce oneoftheonlywaysforpeopletofindoutwhatmusical actswereintown.Today,postersaremoreoftenseenas mementosandhavebecomecollector’sitems–especiallyinthecaseofbandslikeGoose,thathavehad asignificantriseinpopularityoverthelastthreeyears.

Goosehashadgreatsuccessinestablishingaunique visualidentitytoseparatethemselvesfromtheirmusical peers.“Image,whendoneright,isnotagimmick.It’sthe physicalembodimentofyourmusic.Design,photography, fashion,video—thesearevehiclestoexpressyourselfon anadditionalplane,amplifyingwhatyouhavetosayand makingittravelfurtherandresonatemorepowerfully withyouraudience [3].”Thisislargelyinpartbecause they’vedoneawonderfuljobpickingtalentedartiststhat alignwiththeiroverallvisionandeclecticstyle.
Growingup,wereyoualwayspassionate aboutdrawingandillustration inparticular?
Yeah, definitely -itwasalwayssomethingI didfromayoungage.Ifilledsketchbooks withweirdcharactersandcreatures, alwaysdrawinginthemarginsofmy notebooks,etc.Myfamilyalways encouragedmycreativity.Iremembermy grandmotherbuyingmeasetofoilpastels whenIwasreallyyoungandexplainingto methatthesewere“grown-up”artisttools. Idrewaseriesofanimalswiththem:a lion,aweirdsnake-that’sprobablymy earliestartrelatedmemory.Thatand drawingaselfportraitinfirstgradewhere Iwasdancingunderadiscoballwith sunglassesandahugeafro.
Inmyresearch,Inoticedacommon themeofnaturalismandrealism, sometimeswithasurrealistictwist.Who aresomeofyourbiggestinfluencesand whataresomeofyourfavorite artstyles?
Iwouldsaythat’saccurate.Workinginpen andinklendsitselftohighlydetailed observationaldrawing,sothat’swherethe realismcomesfrom.Butthere’snothing thatinterestingaboutapurelyrealist interpretationofasubjecttome-soI supposethat’swherethedoseof surrealismcomesintoplay.Ifyouadda bunchofcrystalsgrowingoutofafrogs back,itbecomessomethingalittlemore fantasticalandinteresting.
Thenaturalismisbornfromtheareain whichIliveandgrewup:thewoods, mountains,andseacoastofNew Hampshire.Thereissomuchnatural inspirationallaroundmeandI’m constantlytakingthatin,consciouslyand subconsciouslyandexpressingthatinmy artwork.Plusthatstuffisjustfuntodraw –mushrooms,twistingroots,lumpyforms, organicshapes–it’sforgiving!
AsforInfluencesandartstyles,Ihonestly admiremanyoftheartistsinthecurrent gigposterscene.DaveKlocisafavorite, hisworksharessomeDNAwithminealbeitatamuchhigherlevel.MaxMahn (TwinHomeprints)isaninspirationas well.DrewMillward,LeslieHerman,Dan Black,tonameafewmore.I’vebeen followingtheseguysforyearsandthento seethemdoingworkforGoosehasbeena realheadtrip,whichjustspeakstothe band’sriseandthetrajectorytheyhave beenon.
AsformoretraditionalinfluencesIwould throwoutMauriceSendak,Arthur Rackhamandtheportraitworkof AliceNeel.
Itakealotofinspirationfromothervisual mediumsaswell:animatedworkslike Over theGardenWall,theStudioGhiblifilmsand videogameslike TheLegendofZelda games and HollowKnight.
Tellusabouthowyourcollaborative relationshipwithGoosebegan.Whathasit beenlikeseeingtheirgrowthoverthelast fouryears?
IwasintroducedtoRick-andbyextension Goose-throughWillThresher.Fansmaybe familiarwithhimforhisdirectingcreditswith theband.WillwasmanagingRick’sprevious bandVasudoatthetimeIbelieve.Ihad beguntakingmyartworkmoreseriouslyand wasputtingmystuffoutthere.Ihadjust discoveredthewondersofdigitalartand programslikephotoshop,andonethingled toanother.
ThefirstprojectthatIdidforGoosewasa stickerdesignwithawhiteGooseinthe shapeofaG,Ibelieve.Shortlyafterthatwas aposterforGoosemas2015atFactory Undergroundthatwasdigitallyprintedat 11”x17”–beforeIevenknewwhat screenprintedgigposterswere.Therewasa lotofliteralGooseimagerybackthen!Its beentrulywildseeingthemexplodeoverthe lastfewyears.
Tobeabletogrowasanartistalongside themisarealpleasure! I’msohappyfor thoseguys-they’veworkedtheirtailsoff anddeserveallofthesuccessthat’scome tothemandmore.It’salsoalittlebitof anxietyonmyend-makingartworkforone ofthehottestbandsintheJamscene-and thescrutinythatcomeswiththat.Iknow howpassionatethefanbaseisandthat comeswithincreasedpressureattimes. But,Ijusttrytokeepmyheaddown,domy thingandnotthinktoomuchabouthowbig they’vebecomeoranyofthat.

TherockformationisactuallyanativeWestVirginiageographicalformation.Iremembergettingbriefedonthemoodofthatshow,andhow thefullmooncameupoverthecourseofthenight.Itsoundedlikeitwasadefiningandspecialmomentforeverybodythere.Ihopetheart capturedalittlebitofthatfeeling.

TheGoosemasMansionisbasedoffoftheLockwood-MathewsmansioninNorwalk.Anationalhistoricsiteandmuseum.Ipitchedtheidea andthebandlikedthevibesowewentwithit.Iwantedtodosomethingalittledifferentthanpreviousyearsandtheanglesand architecturaldetailspresentedalotoffunchallengeandopportunity.The2colorwayshavetotallydifferentmoodswhichwasfunaswell.

Thewave/tsunamithemewasonethatwasveryclosetoRickpersonally.Thecharacterinthechairwaitingfortheimpendingcrashofthe wavewasmyinterpretationofanoldpromoflyeroneofRick’sbuddieshadmadeforashowwaybackinhishighschoolyearsIbelieve.So thatwassomethingtheyfeltstronglyaboutworkingintotheart.Thiswasoneofmymoreambitiouscompositions,andIhadablastwithitprobablythepieceIamthemostproudof,ifIhadtochoose.ThiswasabitofadeparturefromthepenandinkstyleIamaskedtodofor themoften,butitsfuntoswitchitupanddocleanvectorworksometimes.
Walkusthroughhowthecollaborative processhasworkedsofarwithGoosedoyoupitchideastothebandand management,ordotheyhavespecific ideasinmindwhenitcomestoposter/ promotionalmaterial?
Gooseisgreattoworkwith!Inthe beginning,itwasusuallytheband reachingoutdirectly-usuallyRickor Peter.Morerecently,it'sbeen management,butineithercase,theyare reallyartistfriendlyandgreattoworkwith. Mostofthetimetheyletmerunwildand I'llpitchconceptsthatIthinkworkfor whatevertypeofprojectwearetalking about.Oftentheywillreferencepast piecesthatI'vedoneforthem,andsay"we wantsomethinginthisstyle"andI'lltakeit fromthere.Sometimestheyhaveatheme alreadyinmind,likeinthecaseofthe GoosemasVart.Thatwasveryclearly Luau/tikibarthemed,soIworkedwithin thatcriteria,butothertimes,likeinthe caseoftheGoosemasVIarttherewasno themeyet,andtheconceptIcameupwith helpedthemlandonthehauntedmansion vibe.Itreallydependsontheproject.

ThereisonethingIwantyoutotakeawayfrom whatyou’reabouttoread—theimmense amountoftime,love,dedication,passionand hardworkthat MartaGoedde poursintoherrole asProductionManagerisunfathomable.Thisis notherwayoflife;happilyandproudly,itisher entirelife.Sheisaninspirationalclassactand gradeAGooseChick.Thoughthismayonly scratchthesurface,Ihopeyouareinstilledwith adeepsenseofgratitudeandappreciationfor MartaandtheentireGoosecrew. Maythelessonbegin.
Martaandherbrother,Andrew,chosetousethe Goeddefamilynamewhenestablishingtheir businessasanhomagetothepeoplewhohave supportedthemfromdayone.“Thereasonwhy I'mheretodayisbecauseofmyparents.They wereahugeinfluenceonmyloveformusic.I reallyowesomuchtothem.Theyhadusin pianoandviolinlessons.Igrewuplisteningto mymomplayingCaroleKingrecordsandmydad listeningtoTheAllmanBrothers.Ireallylooked uptomyoldersister,Alexis.Sheheavily influencedmymusicintereststoo.AsIgrew older,Istartedfindingmyownloveformusic.I wouldliketothinkthateveryonewhoworksin themusicindustryistherebecausetheywere impactedbymusic.I'msoluckytobeabletodo whatIdo.”
Duringherfreshmanyearofcollege,shewentto herfirstmusicfestival.“IwenttoElectricForest forthefirsttimeandabsolutelyfellinlovewithit. Ialreadylovedmusic,butwhenyougotoyour firstfestival,itjusthitsyoulikeatonofbricks. You'reforeverchanged.”Drivinghomefrom college,shetoldAndrewaboutherfirstForest, “Iwasoncloudnine.Hedidgotothefestivalthe followingyear.Afterthat,wewouldseeeverylive musicshowwecould.ThenAndrewstarted gettingintolightingandthat'swhenweboth decidedwewouldlovetogetintoallthis.”
Freshlyinspiredbytheincredibleproduction valueofElectricForest,MartaandAndrew startedbuyingandrentingequipmentto experimentwithintheirmom’sgarage.
“AndrewandIlearneditalltogether.Irecently foundthislightingdiagramthatIdrewoutwhen wefinallyfiguredouthowtowirelighting.We weresuchnerdsaboutit.We'dreadeverything wecould.Whenwewenttoshows,wewould totallygeekoutonthegearandthevenueand thengohomeandreadmore.
Westartedseekingoutpeopleinourareawho wereworkingintheindustry,butwereallydidn't knowanybodygoingintoit.”
MartagraduatedfromIndianaUniversityin 2015.Shebeganworkingwithamediafinance magazinewhileAndrewwasmakinggoodmoney inasalesjob.Theyweresuccessful,but undeniablyunfulfilled.“I'llalwaysremember whenAndrewcalledmeandsaid,‘Iwanttodo anequipmentrentalcompanybutIhavenoidea whatI'mdoingintermsoftheadministrative businessside.’”Martadecidedtoapplytoagrad schoolprogramattheUniversityofIndiana KelleySchoolofBusinesstohelpbringtheir dreamstofruition.Only38%ofapplicantsare typicallyaccepted,andyoubetterbelievethis amazingladywasoneofthem.
Armedwithbusinessknowledgeandemphatic passion,theyestablishedtheirLLC, Goedde SoundandLight, in2017.Theirfirstofficial showwasatKilroy’sSportsBarinBloomington, IN.“Weweresofreakingexcited!Thebarhadno speakers.Therewasjustastage.Theyaskedus tobringtwosmallspeakers,butwebrought everythingweownedatthatpoint.Wehadpretty decentsizedspeakersandsetupallthelighting. Theywereblownoutofthewater.Wewere gettingpaidpracticallynothing,butwedidn’t care.Wewerejustsostokedtobeabletosetup ourstuffforanactualevent.Eversincethen, we'vealwaysgoneaboveandbeyondtoputon thebestproduction,evenmorethanwewere contractedtoprovideforashow.Beingso impactedbylivemusic,oneofthebestthings aboutwhatwedo,ishearingpeople’sreaction afterashow.There'ssomuchthatgoesintoit, butitmakesitsoworthittoknowthatwecan bringthatjoytootherpeople.”
Afterayearofbringingepicproductiontothe localIndymusicscene,theirfriendandshow buddy,DannyMcDonald,wasaddedtothecrew. “Hewasreallyintoittoo.Heofferedtohelpus wheneverweneededit,andhe'sbeenwithus everydaysince.Heisthegluefor thewholecrew.Thingswouldnothappendayin anddayoutifDannywasn’tthere.Hecanfix anything.He'ssosmart.He'sbeenAndrew’s leadlightingtechsincethebeginning.”Danny helpscreatethelightingdesignfortourandhas builtseveralcomponentstotherigthat holdthelights.
WithMartaholdingdownthebusiness,Andrew andDannyhonedtheirskillsandcontinuedto expandtherig.GSLwasgainingmomentumand establishingthemselvesasaproductionforcein theMidwest.Theylandedtheirfirsttouringgig withDizgo.ThisisthebandresponsibleforGSL’s romantic,cosmicallyironic,introductionto Goose.“ItwasValentine’sDayatWoodlands Tavernin2018.GoosewasopeningforDizgo.
Beforetheshow,Andrewsaid,‘Hey,I'mheresoI canrunforyouguystoo.’Petersaid,‘Really? That'dbeawesome!’Afterwards,weweretalking totheguys,andtheyweresointriguedthatwe ownedourownlightsandweretouringwitha bandlikeDizgo.Wekeptintouchwiththem.”
Fastforwardtosummer2018,theuniverse reinforcesfate,bringingGooseandGSLtogether forResonance.
“ThepeoplewhoputonResonancehitusupto betheequipmentsuppliervendorsfortheevent VIPstage.Gooseplayedtwosetsthatweekend, latenightandVIP,soweranintothemagain.”
Shortlyafterthat,Goosemadethefirstmove andaskedAndrewtocomeontour.Martastayed homeandcontinuedtorunthebusinessand produceshowswithDanny.“ButI'llneverforget Andrewcallingmeattheendofanightwith Goose,anditsoundedsoamazing!Iwas workingothershowshere,butIwasalways thinkingitwouldbesocooltotourwiththem.”
Withconfirmationtheattractionwasmutual, GooseandGSLenteredtheirofficial relationship,amatchmadeinjambandheaven. It’sbeenincrediblewatchingthemgrow together!“It’sbeenchallenging,butinthebest way.Thiswholegrouphasbeensomotivated. Everytimesomethingbiggerandbetterwould happenforGoose,wewerestokedtolevelup anddelivertheproduction.”
MartaandAndrewwerealwaysclosegrowingup. Theiryinandyangrelationshipcreateda harmonicbusinesspartnership.“Hehassucha creativemindandsomuchmotivationfor production.Ithinkoneofthereasonswhywe worksowelltogetherisbecauseIlovehisideas, andIfigureoutthelogisticsandmapthatpart out.I'vealwaysbeentheonethinkingthrough thedetailssowecanexecutehisvision…

Havingthatsiblingtrustinacrewmemberis huge.AnytimeIhavearandomthoughtabout something,Icancallhimtojusttalkandnerd outaboutit.Imean,wewentfromfiguringshit outinourmom’sgaragetobeingatRadioCity MusicHallthisyear.Momentslikethatarehow yougetoverthefactthatyou'reworkingwith yourbrothereveryday.”
Marta’sdaytodayoperationalplanningbegins monthsbeforetheactualshow.Sheworks closelywithTourManagerandfellowbadass GooseChick,SamKing,toironoutallthe details.“Wegetthevenue'scontactinformation fromourmanagersoragentswhoaresogreat. Theydosomuchforusandarejustso awesome.Sowereachouttostartwhat'scalled advancing.Intheadvancedprocess,advancing wherewetalkwiththevenueabouttechspecs. Wefigureoutwhattheyhaveinhouse,letthem knowwhatwe’retouringwith,whatthelighting riglikelookslike,andwhatweneedaudiowise. Iftheyhavevideowalls,wetalkaboutlogisticsof howwecangetourvideoupthere.Thenwehit onthebusinessside—ifwe’llneedhelp unloadingthetruck,workingwithbudgetingand sortingoutcostsforeverythingthatgoesinto puttingoneveryshow.Itisabusinessattheend ofthedaysothat'simportant.”
Thencomesshowday.Hoursbeforetherail ridersandpostercollectorsbeginliningup, Martaisalreadyhardatwork.“SamKingandI doawalkthroughwiththevenue.They'llshowus thegreenroomandthestage.ThenSam, Andrew,DannyandIunloadlightingfromthe truckbeforethebandgear,becauselighting loadincantakehours.Thenwestartonrigging andhanginglights.Anhourortwolater,therest ofthecrewwillstartloadinginallthebandgear andsettingallthatup.Onceit'stimeforloadin, everythingcomesoffthetruckandrigging begins."Lightingloadincantakehoursand takesupthewholestagesothatgetsdonefirst. Thenanhourortwolatertherestofthecrewwill startloadinginaudio&allofthebandgear.Iset upallthecamerasandthestreaming equipment.Imakesurethateverythingis absolutelyperfectbysoundcheck.Ialwayssay soundcheckisbasicallyafullshowpractice… thebandhasworkedsohardtomaketheir soundexactlywhattheywantittobeforevery show,sowemakeitallhappen.”
Oncesoundcheckison,Martashiftsherfocusto thelivestream.“ItalkwithLiveXLivefrom soundcheckthroughtheendoftheshow,just checkinginmakingsureeverything'sgood becausewesendourprogramfeedfromthe camerastothemfromourvideoworldonsiteat theshows.Aftersoundcheck,weclean everythingup,getallthecasesoffstageand cleaneverythingupandgetreadyfortheshow (Martapausesandtakesadeepbreath)…The funniestthingisthat'snotevenmywholeday, butIlovehowIjusttookabreaththere.When theguysstart,that'swhenIcanactuallytakea breatheventhoughI'malwaysonstandbyon stagejustincaseanythinghappensoranybody needsanythingatall.”Approximately10hours intoherworkday,Martabeginspreppingforan efficientloadout.
“Halfwaythroughsecondset,I'llstartgetting readyforloadout.It'simportantforustogetout ofvenuesinatimelymannersowecanget sleep.IworkcloselywithournewStage Managerandbacklinetech,Padge,andhe's amazing!Ourmanager,BenBaruch,hasknown himforyears,becausehe’sworkedinthe industryforoveradecade.

Theyhadthisinterestingobsessionwitha bunchofactors,oneoftheminparticularwas KevinCostner.WeplayedaHalloweenshow whereweeachdressedupasaKevinCostner character-exceptforBenwhoreallywanted tobealobster.Thatwasprettyridiculous.I rememberhavingalotoffunbuildingoutthe bunksinthetrailerwithmygirlfriend,Kelly.I oftenwonderifthey’restillthereorwhat they’reusedforatthispoint.

KickingofftherunonAugust12thwasatwonightstandatColumbia, Maryland’s ChrysalisatMerriweatherPostPavilion Asolidfirstsetthatsawadeeplyjammedout takeonTheWho’s“MyGeneration”began thenightbeforeGoosedroppedthesecond 35-minute“AllINeed”ofthesummer.While 6/10’sreallyventuredintosomedeep,dark playing,theversionplayedatChrysaliswas second-jam-focused,embarkingonablissful excursionthatshowcasedtheband’s consistentprecisionandtightness.
ThesecondnightatChrysalisbroughtback “AtlasDogs’”originalarrangementforthe firsttimesince3/4asitsegued phenomenallyintoastretched-outandraging “EchoofaRose.”Therealimprovisational highlightoftheshowandChrysalisrunwould revealitselfduringthe“EarthlingorAlien?” thatopenedthesecondset.Evilsynthsfrom Peter’sMoogMatriarchsweptoverthe sparsegroovecreatedwhileRickdealtwitha brokenstring.Probingthedeep,darkdepths oftheirjammingtoolkit,Goosedeliveredan EorAfortheages.
Movingwestwardto Colorado,thebeautiful DillonAmphitheater wasthesiteofatwonightstandleadinguptotheband’s RedRocksdebut.Awell-jammed“Timeto Flee”cameearlyinthefirstsetof8/16, followedupbythedebutof“IndianRiver’s” ‘80ssynth’arrangement,acoolandbreezy vibethataddsanotherchaptertothesong’s longandvariedhistory.Thefirstoutingof “TheLabyrinth”sinceJanuaryinto“HotTea” closedouttheframe.Inthesecondset,an exceptionalpairingof“AWesternSun”-> “Moby”wasanimprovisationalhighlight, Peter’ssmoothVintageVibeworkactingas theperfectbridgefromthesoaringmelodies oftheAWSjamintothemassivebassbombs oftheensuingTedTapescut.“Pancakes,” strongasalways,closedoutthesecondset before“DoobieSong”gotitsfirstplaysince Marchandmarkeditsfourthconsecutive appearanceintheencoreslot.
Thefirstsetof8/17easedinwithalaid-back “CaliforniaMagic”beforeRickabsolutely torchedthevenueduring“Switchin’,”also notableforPeterhittinghisHammondC3 organinsteadofhisusualguitarsolo,amost welcomechangetoafantasticcover.“Borne” wasupnext,andtheleadsinglefrom Dripfield wentonitsmostadventurousouting yet,movingfromthetriumphantRicksoloto thegroovyextendedjam.Thisexcursiontook adarkturn(including“Tumble”teases!), eventuallycollapsingintothewildand dissonant“Dr.Darkness”intro.
Atypically-strongcoveroftheGrateful Dead’s“MississippiHalf-Step”endedone ofthefinestfirstsetsoftheyearon ahighnote.Forthesecondset,wewere introducedtothe“jaggedchurn”jamvia the“WysteriaLane,”featuringPeter franticallyshreddingdissonanceontopofa poundingdrumgroovewhileRickpulled switchesfrombliss-ladenpeakstodarker sections.Stillmakingacasefor2022MVP, noversionofWysteriaistobeoverlooked! AdebutofacoverofTalkTalk’s“It’sMy Life”cameaheadofaclassicGoosefourth quartersegmentin“RosewoodHeart”> “Rockdale”>“YourOcean”>“Madhuvan” anda“TurnedClouds”encore.
RedRocks wasalreadyoneofthemost highlyanticipatedshowsoftheyear,even moresothanGoosemasinFebruary. Playingtotheirlargestcrowdata headliningshowyet,acapacitynumberof 9500,thepackedandhistoricvenuewas treatedtoaragerofanight.Openingwitha strongpairingof“Hungersite”>“Silver Rising,”thejamminghighlightoftheshow camein“Tumble,”whichtouchedonthe ‘jaggedchurn’themefrom8/17’sWysteria onceagain.“SeekersontheRidge,” “Animal,”and“Arcadia”roundedoutthe firstset–moreclassicGoose.
Atsetbreak,avideowasplayedforthosein attendanceannouncingthatGoosemas wouldtakeplaceatColorado’s1STBANK CenterovertwonightsinDecember, somethingmetwithraucouscheersfrom thecrowd.Thesecondset,whilecoverheavy,hadsomestrongmomentsinArrow, thecoverdebutofTheNational’s “BloodbuzzOhio”(acrowd-favouritecover), andMoniker’s“Milestone2(SkuxLife),”a somewhatobscuredebut.Subverting almosteveryone’sexpectationsofa “Dripfield”encore,thebandbroughtforth thefirstelectric“ElmegtheWise”since January,agorgeousandsoaringpickto closeoutahistoricnight.
MovingfromthemilestoneshowatRed Rocks,Goosecutlooseatthe Brooklyn Bowl in LasVegas on8/20,droppinga partyshowthatfeaturedawildsit-infrom anElvisimpersonatoronthesecond-setopening“Don’tBeCruel.”Don’tsleepon thisshow,however,asthefirstset’s “EarthlingorAlien?”getsouttherewith somewildRickfireworksandTrevorbass bombsandthesecondset’s“AllINeed” packsalotoffireintoitsrelativelybrief 11minutes.
Averyon-the-nose“CaliforniaMagic” openerat LA’s GreekTheatre wasthefirst songofasong-heavyshow,treatingwest coastfanstothewideselectionavailablein Goose’scatalog.Asit-infromLuciusatthe endofthesecondseton“SlowReady”and acoverofPeterGabriel-original“InYour Eyes”addedanincrediblevibetoboth songs–a‘Goocius’collaborationthatI definitelyhopetoseeagain.Inthesecond set,weweretreatedtothefull‘Driptych’–“Borne”>“Hungersite”>“Dripfield,”as seenonthealbum.Afunsitinfrom TheStringCheeseIncident’sJasonHann duringtheshow-closing“HotTea”brought thefunnighttoaclose.
