BiosonoursocialmediaaccountshaveshonethelightonourteambutneverbeforehaveweflippedthespotlightonourTEDitor-In-ChiefJonCaruso andhiswifePaige-affectionatelyknownaroundourvirtualofficesas“Coattails''.Jonisthepurestsoulyou’llevermeetand TheelGooseTimes was bornfromthesafespacehecreatedwithcartoonstocombattheeffectsofchildhoodbullying.Alifelongpassionforcartooningultimatelyintersected withJon’sloveforGooseandTedwasborn.Thiscute,mustachioedGoosewithglasseschampionedaweeklymemepokinglightfunatthecharactersin ElGoose.Fateintervenedandtheconceptfor TheelGooseTimes wasbornonthestrengthofJon’slove,purity,andleadership.
AfterdistributingourfirstissueattheFrederickFairgroundsinFrederick,MDonMay3,2021,EGThasnowprintedover4,000copiesacrossfive volumes,eachlargerandmoreimpressivethanthelastasbothcontentandqualityhaveimprovedwitheachprogressiveeffort.Whereasmostsuch organizationsmightbewaylaidbyprofitmotive,Jonhadnosuchaspirations.EGTisbothnonprofitandself-sustaining.Whenweweremerelydreaming bigandfeelingtall,wegotupandrunningwitha$75donationfromeachofourfirsttenmembers.Today, TheelGooseTimes boastsannual subscriptionsacrossthirtystatesandoverseas!
Seriousmusicfanscommonlyprofessthat“it’sallaboutthemusic,”butifyoudigalittledeeper,thereisoftenrevealedtobeawebofpersonal connectionofatleastequal,ifnotgreater,significance.WhenitcomestoGoose,communitywasalwaysapartoftheblueprint,sowhendissectingthe deeplovethatexistsforthebelovedindiegrooveactfromWilton,CT,whichcamefirst–themusicorthecommunity–isverymuchachickenoreggtype ofdebate.LooknofurtherthantheearliestiterationsofGoosemasasproofpositivethatbuildingfellowshipwasanintegralpartoftheprocess.The senseofbelonging,thefeelingofbeingunitedbycommonpassionexistsamongstourteamattheEGT,justastheydoamongsttheGaggleatlarge. Afterall,loveisreal,notfadeaway.Wrongband?Ithinknot. Divingdeepintothehistoryandmythology surroundingGoose,there’sarecurringthemeof community:acollectiveenergythatresonatesona deeperlevel-which,likethetide,ebbsandflows withthepassageoftime.Oneoftheprimarygoals of TheelGooseTimes hasbeentofocuson importantpeoplesurroundingtheband,asinour opinion,they’rejustasimportanttounderstanding theoverallstory–likepiecestoapuzzle.Withouta doubt, Wilton,Connecticut isaconstantforcewithin thegenesisandevolutionofGoose.
Inpastvolumes,we’vespokenwithafewimportant figuresfromWilton,foundwithinvariousearly stagesofGoosehistory(forexample:Jon“Coach” Lombardi,MattCampbell&WillThresher),inan efforttogainnewinsightandperspectiveabouta bandwealllove.Forourone-yearanniversary,we arecontinuingthistrendwithaninterviewwiththe man,themythandlegend: JeffEngborg –alongtimefriendofthebandandanextremelytalented musician.Bornin1987,JeffEngborgJr.(anactual realperson,notjustasongtitle)hadapassionfor musicatayoungageandmovedtoWiltonwhenhe was12yearsold.
Tellusaboutyourself:growingup,didyoualwayshaveapassionformusic?
Igrewupwithmyuncle.Welivedinthesamehouseandhehadadustyolduprightinhisbasementroom.WhenIwasabout6,Iwouldsneakdown intothebasementandplaytheblackkeysofthepiano.Onetime,hecaughtmeandjokinglyaskedif,“Iwasevergoingtoplayanythingotherthan theblackkeys?”Afterthatmoment,heendedupshowingmemyfirstscaleonthepiano.Now,theguysIplaywithaskmeif,“I’mevergoingtoplay inanythingbutC,G,DM?”Ijustletthemknowthatthesearethefunkiestkeystoplay!
MyfirstfriendsweremusiciansandI’mstillfriendswithsomeofthem,tothisday.WhenImovedtoWilton,IjusttoldpeopleIwasakeyboardplayer –suddenly,Ihad3or4instantfriendswhowereguitarplayersand/ordrummers.Musicislikealanguage.Ireallycan’texplainwhytherewereso manygoodmusiciansinWilton,butIgotluckymovingtherewhenIdid.IhavespokentoBenaboutthis-hehadthesamethingtosay,assomeone whodidn’tgrowupthere,butlatercametoknowlotsofWiltonfolks.
Didyoustudymusicincollegeorwasitmoreorganic,self-taught?
Ineverhadanylessons,butIhadtheopportunitytoplaywithalotofkidsthatdid.Ipickedupalotfromthem.OneofthefirstpeoplethatImetwas anamazingguitarplayerprodigynamedBrendenCoomaraswamy.Brenden,whowouldlaterintroducemetoTrevor,introducedmetoalotofnew musicalstylesandartistslikeJeffBeck,HerbieHancockandmanyothersthatcontinuetoinfluencemetothisday.
I’veheardthatyouarealocallegendintheWiltoncommunity.Sinceyoualsogrewupin Wilton,didyouknowanyonefromGooseearlyon?
Yes,IwasclosewithTrevor.Growingup,wewouldplayalotofmusictogether.Ihaveknownhim sinceIwasabout16orso–I’m35now,soalongtime.Wewereintwobands:onewascalled TheWisps,thatplayedtheFairfieldcocktailpartysceneforoldercrowds(wehadtomake moneysomehow)andtheotherwascalledKingLeaf,whichwasaconceptualprogressivefunk bandwithBrendenCoomaraswamy.
Growingup,IwasalwaysawareofRick’stalents.I’mhappythatIgottoplayasmanyshowsand haveasmanygreatjamswithhimasIdid.HewouldsitinalotwithmybandBootyborg,which wasalocalelectroprojectthatIputtogetherthatconsistedofdrummerJonLeibowitz,myself, andbassistColinYoung.Itwasafunlittleventurewherewewouldplayearly90spopstufflike theBackstreetBoys,butgetextremelyfunkywiththegroove.Iwouldsingallthesongswitha talkboxandsynth.

Somefansmightnotknowthis,butyou’vetouredwithGreatBlue (PeterAnspach’soriginalband)forawinterinColoradoandyou werefeaturedprettyheavilyontheself-titledalbum,GreatBlue, releasedin2017.HowdidyoumeetPeter?Whatwasitliketouring withGreatBlue?
Onedayin2017,Iwasshoppingforabirthdaypresentforafriendat REI,whichisacampingstore.Iwasapproachedbyanextremely handsome,glasses-wearingassociateonthefloorandfeltataponmy shoulder.ItwasPeter,whoaskedmeaboutmybandBootyborg-we endeduphavingaconversationaboutkeyboardsandsynths!He helpedmepickoutthegift,rungmeupandweexchangedphone numbers.Afewweekslater,hecalledmetocomejamwithGreatBlue, whoaresomeofthemosttalentedmusiciansandsomeofthe greatestpeopleIhavethepleasureofmeeting!
Weallgelledreallywelltogether.Whentheyweregettingreadyfor theirwintertourthatyear,theyinvitedmetotagalong.Iwasexcitedas IhadneverbeentoColorado!Ihadthetimeofmylife,traveling aroundwiththeguysandplayingshows.Weplayedalotofawesome showsinthemountains,CrestedButte,movingontoColoradoSprings.

Iwanttosettherecordstraighthere:thesonghadadifferentnameatonepointthatwaschangedtomynameduringthemasteringofthetrack bytheband.WhenwewereontourinColorado,wehadatonofdowntimebetweenshows-somebeingaweirdperson,Iwouldgetthemto watch ForensicFiles.Inamedthesongoriginallyafteranepisodeasasomewhatoff-colorjoke.WhenIgotthefinishedalbum,theyhad changedthenameofthetracktomynameasajokeonme,whichIthoughtwasprettyfunny. NowIhave300newFacebookfriends!
Thesongitselfwasthoughtofandbroughttothebandinfourparts.Theintroof“JeffEngborg”wasbasedheavilyoffofthehornarrangement inthesong“TheBirdWave”fromofmyall-timehero(andfunkorganmaster),JimmyMcGriff,offofhis1970album ElectricFunk.Icomposed theentiresong:Iknewallofthemajorsegmentsofthesongandgaveeveryonealoosedescriptionoftheoverallstructure.Ifeellikeeach memberaddedsomeoftheirspecialsauceonthesong:Petercameupwiththeniceaccentingguitarpartsfortheintros;IreallylikeEthan’s rhythmguitarpartsandNick’stightfillsonthetrackaswell.Onthestudiotrack,Iplayedallofthekeyboardsections.Havingtheorganand clavinetintheroomwhileweworkedoutthekinksreallyhelpedsetthemood.Iwantedthesongtobeheavy-hitting,butmoresogroovingwith theclavinet,focusedonthe1saftertheintro.Weprobablyplayedthissongmorethananyothersongafteritwasmade,andwegotreallytight atplayingitlive.Asfunasitistolistento,it’sanabsoluteblasttoplay!IamsohappythatGoosehasadoptedthesongontheirlasttourand hopetohearitplayedthissummeraswell!
What’sthestorybehindtheHammondC3organ?InourearlyconversationsyoumentionedthatyousoldittoPeterandthatorganisnow usedfrequentlyinGoosesets.
Goosefansmightnotknowthatyoualsowrotetheguitarlickto“SoReady.” Tellmeabouthowyoucameupwithit,howitgottoRickandevolvedinto whatitistoday.
Isawtheevolutionreallyonthespot!ItwasamazingtoseeRick’sabilitytothink aboutandbuildonanidea.Around2015orso,RickandIwereinadark basement,asusmusicianssometimesarein,andIwasplayinganawesomeold Juno106from1986.Iturnedtheworld-famousChorusIIon,gotasawtooth patch,lookedathimdirectlyintheeyesandhitthethree-chordwalk-downguitar lick.Hestoppedmeandsaid,“Whatwasthat?Thatthatsoundsamazing!”
Around2017,IfoundPeter’sC3organonCraigslistlateonenight(whosaidthisneveryieldsgoodthings).Alltheadreadwas:“EstatesalelargeHammondorgan.”IknewitwaseitheranM3orB3/C3fromthepicture,asthepercussionwaspictured.WhenIshowedupat8AMtosee abouttheorgan,thepeopledidn’tknowwhatIwastalkingabout.Eventually,Ilearnedthattherewasabarnabouthalfamiledowntheroad thattheythoughtitmightbein.Walkingintothebarn,itsmelledlikeaskunkhadbeenlivinginthere;itwasverydusty.Isawsomethinginthe darkness,coveredintarps–itwastheorgan,whichhadbeensittinginthisbarnforaround30years!Uncoveringtheorganmademethinkof thedustypianoinmyuncle’sbasement.Iknewitwastherealdeal!Itwasapropheticmoment.Theorganturnedouttobefrom1955anditis averyspecialorgan.TheorganwasreportedtohavebeenplayedbyDaveBrubeckwholivedinWilton,sotheorganhas mojo!Eventhoughit wassittingforabit,itwasinimmaculatecondition-especiallythewiringontheinside.ItcanbeheardonGreatBluestudioalbumandnow everywhereGoosegoes-asIsoldittoPeterlastyear! Lateron,wemetupagainandhestartedputtingwordsandtherestofthe chordstogether.Iknewitwasgoingtobeabanger,becauseitsoundedgreat. After,heaskedmeifhecouldplaythesong,Itoldhimhecould,onlyifhe dedicatedthesongeachtimetome-ofcourseIwasjoking,buthediddoitafew times.Hereallyisasweetperson!

Oneday,wehadsomedowntime,soIaskedPeterifhewantedtocheckoutthehotsprings,whichwereabout 30minutesawayinthetownofHotSprings,Colorado.
MyfriendLukeMolas,whoisaninsanebackcountryskierfromPolandandaniceclimber,wasintheareaand showsupinhisvintage90sBMW.Weclimbinandstartridingdownsomeinsanesnowymountainroadsat highspeeds.HewaspullingtheEbrakearoundturns,passingbigtrucksanddrivinglikehewasaFormula1 snowracer!
Wekepttellinghimtoslowdown–buthejustkeptsayinghowthiswasnothing,thathedriveslikethisallthe time(inhisthickaccent)andifthiswasbad,weshouldseehowisbrother-in-lawdrives!IlookedatPeterand weboththoughtweweregoingtodieforsure,butsomehow,wemadeit.

Weusedtocrashonpeople’scouchesontheflooraftergigs. Sometimesthevenueswouldbepacked,whileothertimesthere wouldbeaboutthreepeoplethere.Itwasnotglamorousatall, butsofun!I’mveryhappythatIgottogoonthattourandfeel gratefulthatPeteraskedmetocomealong.Somehowattheend ofthetour,wehadlike3hornplayersjoinanditreallyfeltlikeI wasinatravelingcircus!Ithinkwedidlike16gigsin13daysor somethinglikethat-itwasawesome!

Onestepclosertothesourceofthisprofoundperspectiveonmusic,Ihadtoknow,wheredidRita’spassionstemfrom?Turns out,theCarusoshavepasseddowntheimportanceofmusicforgenerations.“Wecomefromafamilyofmusicians.Myparents feltthatitwasjustasimportanttoreadmusicasitwastoreadwordsonapage.Itwasnonnegotiable.Wehadtolearnhowto playaninstrument.Therewasnoarguingaboutit.Itwasjustthewayitwas.Mygrandfatherandgreatgrandfatherplayedguitar. Myothergrandfatherwasachurchorganist.Mydadhadthemostbeautifulvoice.Hewasatenor.Wesanganddancedallthe timeathomegrowingupanditwasabsolutelythesameforPeterandhissisterLindsay.”

Rita’spassionissinging.Hercallingisteachingfamiliestosing.SherecentlyretiredfromNorwalkCommunityCollege,where
Lindsay,anothersignificantinfluenceonPeter,hasadegreeinvoiceperformanceandtheater.ShewasafreshmanatStaples HighSchoolinWestportwhenPeterwasborn.The14yearagegapbetweenthemcultivatedaspecialbrothersister relationship.LindsaywascastedinseveralmusicalsandbabyPeter,herbiggestfan,waspassedaroundhertalentedgroupof theaterfriendsduringshowsandrehearsals: “Hegrewupintheorchestrapit.Hewasn'tevenwalkingandwe’dplophimdownthere

Fastforwardto7/4/08,Peter’smusicalfoundationhasbeenstronglyreinforcedforabout15years.He’splayingwithhishigh schoolbandFreshlySqueezedandthey’regoingtoplaytheirfirstperformanceattheCarusoAnspachfamily’sannualJuly4th party:“Itwasourannualthingforlike80to100peopleatourhouseandwealwayshadmusicplaying.Wedidn'thavelive entertainmentbutthisoneyearPeterhadannouncedthathisbandwasgoingtoprovidesomeentertainment…Butitwasso funny.Andtheyweresoserious.Ofcourseallofourfriendsandfamilyatthepartywerejustecstatic.Everyonewasvery supportive.Wehadthebesttime!Itwasreallyfun!Irememberthatveryclearly.AndofcoursePeterwasthebigshowmaninthe front.”
Now,RitahasseenhersonplayinfrontofthousandsofpeopleingiantarenaslikeMoheganSunandcan’twaitforherfirsttrip toRedRocksforGoose’ssoldoutshow.

IwascuriousaboutRita’sperspectiveonGoose’ssuccessnotjustasthemotherofabandmember,butalsoasamusician.What’sthe secretsauce?
“Itworksbecauseeverymemberofthebandistrulythemselvesineverywayshapeandformandthey'reincrediblemusicians.Iwanted toreallyunderstandwhatjammingmeantandittookmeawhile.IworkedreallyhardlisteningtoRick,listeningtoTrevor,watchingand listeningtoBenandJeff,andthenPeterandtryingtoseehowthejamworks.It’sthatarc!Theystartoutwithonesong,andthenwithin thestructureofthemusic,withinthemeasures,withinthekey-eachmemberiscreating.Atthesametimethatthey'recreating individually,they'reacutelyawareofwhattheothermembersofthebandaredoingandwherethemusicisheaded.Themusicthen crescendosuptoaplateau,whereiteithercontinuesgoingupandupandupandup,orstartstograduallycomebackdown,with musicalsurprisestuckedintothemelody.Iknowthateverybandmember’sbrainsensorsaretotallylitup,goingamillionmilesanhour. Hisfreespiritedmovementhasbeennurturedfromaveryyoungage.“He’s beeninfluencedhiswholelifebyverystrongwomenandhehasagreatrespect forallwomen.He'sgrownupwithmymom,mamaCaruso,whoabsolutely adoredPeter.Ilovethefactthathewoulddancewithus.Ican'ttellyouhow manyhomemoviesandvideoswehaveofallofusdancingtogetherwithPeter inthemiddleofitall.Hewoulddohisthinganditwassonatural.Wewerean audiencethatdidn'tallowPetertofeellikehehadtoputonashowforus.It wasjustanaturalthingtodobecausewe’rebornsinging,anddancinggoes handinhandwithsingingandmusic.I'mthrilledthatbothmychildrenarevery freeandveryuninhibited.”
ItwasalwaysimportanttoRitathatherchildrenhaveanenvironmentwhere theycanfeelfreeanduninhibited.She’saselfproclaimedflowerchildand hippyandhereclecticstylehasbeenadoptedbybothLindsayandPeter.She championedtheirselfexpressioninallhealthyformsincludingsupportingthe growthofPeter’smustache.“Ihavetobehonest,Iloveeveryinchofhis handsomeandbeautifulface.Idoloveseeingallofit,soIlikethewayhegoes backandforthwithit…Itgrowsreallyquicklyandhe'sgotallthathairtoo thankGod!HegotthatfromtheCarusosideofthefamily.”

WhetheryouknowhimasPeterofGreatBlue,HandiniofGooseorhalfofthemastermindbehindthePA-RCclothingline,onethingis forcertain—PeterAnspachisthemasterofalltrades.OfficiallyjoiningGoosein2017,Peterhasquicklybecometheheartandsoulof theband.InthefiveyearsofbeinginGoose,Peterhasnotonlywrittenanumberofsongsforthebandsuchas“WhiteLights,”“Honey Bee”and“TimetoFlee,”buthehasalsocontributedanumberofGreatBluesongsthathavebecomestaplesinGoose’slivecatalog suchas“Yeti,”“DocBrown”and“Pancakes.”EvenGreatBlue’s“JeffEngborg”hasbeeninrotationthisyear(whoyoucanreadall aboutinthisissueof TheelGooseTimes.)
However,wemustturnourattentionto“RedBird,”oneofGoose’snewestPeter-ledsongsthatispackedtothebrimwith uncompromisingpathos.DebutingattheRegencyBallroomonJan.29,2022,thissongisnottobeconfusedwithasongcalled “RedBird”thatwasplayedbyGoosein2015(goodlucktowhoeverfindsasolidcopyofthisrecording.It’sbeensaidthat“RedBird” wastheoriginaltitlefor“AWesternSun”).
Sinceitsdebut,“RedBird”hasappearedanadditionalsixtimes.Atthetimeofwritingthispiece,thelastappearanceof“RedBird”was attheSalvageStationinAsheville,NC,wherethetunegotthejamtreatmentandwasfollowedbyastellar“726.”
WhatsetsthisapartfromsongsaboutunrequitedloveinSpanishclassoraholiday-lovingmythicalcreatureistheemotionalitybehind thelyrics.Atthecenterofthelyricsisoneveryspecialperson:RitaCaruso—Peter’smom.

Bythetimeyougettothechorus,theemotioninPeter’slyricsisincrediblypalpable—everywordisjustastangibleasthelast.

Bythetimewe’rewipingthetearsfromoureyesafterthefirstchorus,wehaveanotherversethatbringsPeteruptoperhapswherehis relationshipwithhismotherwasthemostfragile.
“Sorryforthelies/sorrydoesn’tdo” saysPeterashebeginstheverse-longapologytohismom.Thisversereallyshowsasenseof maturityinhim,inthatherecognizesthatmaybehewasn’tthebesttohismombuthehopestoslowlymakeituptoher,evenif“it’ll takemorethanaphonecalltogetherfeelingfine.”

ForthesecondnightinWashingtonDC,Gooseblastedthevenuewithafirstsetthatlackedoutside-the-boximprovisation,butmorethanmadeup foritwithanabsoluteflamethrowerofenergy.Jumpingthroughhotrenditionsof“JiveI”(extendedintrojam!)and“IndianRiver”(Delta-ishjamon thebackhalfissuperlaid-backandLONG),theeventualgrooveofthelattercollapsedsmoothlyintothedissonantdelay-drenchedintroto“Dr. Darkness.”Roundingoutthesetcameabeaconofjoyouspeakjammingin“S.O.S.”andthesecond-everperformanceofGreatBluefunkvehicle “JeffEngborg.”

Sometimesthatstatementcarriesmoretruththanothertimes,butinMarch2022, Gooseseemedtobegineveryshowwiththemissionanddesiretoone-up themselvesanddeliverground-breakingmusiconanightlybasis.Atourthatwewill nodoubtlookbackonfondlydecadesintothefuture,thisten-showrunontheheels oftheirarenadebutfeaturednotonlytenincredibleconcerts,butanincredible expansionofthedepthoftheirjamming,risk-takingsetlistcalls,andanoverall departurefromcomfortandexpectationthathasbeenslowlycomingtofruitionover thelastyear.Iexpectandbelievethat2022willonlycontinueonitsupward trajectoryfromhere.SummertourLOOMS!

JustlikepaintingsintheMoMA,therearea varietyofdifferentshadesandboldcolorsused tocreateeachindividualpicture.Havinga varietyofcolorsandshadesareextremely important-astheyaffecteverythingfrom compositionandvisualappealtotheviewer's (i.e.ourfanbase)attentionandemotions.
Thisisessentiallythesamethingwhenlooking atabandlikeGoose.Themusicand communitythatsurroundsthebandare importanttounderstandingtheoverallpicture thatthey’retryingtopaint.
Continuingwithourthemethisvolume,today weheaddownthepathwaytotheGreatBeyond with GregKnight,PRandMusicPublicistfor Goose.

It’shardtosay.Musichasalwaysbeenapassionofmine,but(muchtothechagrinofmywonderfulwife),I’vealwaysbeenwhimsical.I knewfromanearlyagethatregardlessofwhereIlanded,Iwouldalwaysfindfulfillmentthroughmusic.So,IguessIjustknewIwantedit tobeapartofmylife.Likemostfolksinvolvedinthejamworld,thefirstconcertIattendedwasUsheratTheMeadowsinHartford,CT. Specifically,Usher’s8701EvolutionTour,featuringFaithEvans,Nas,andMr.Cheeks.
Havingbeeninthemusicindustryforoveradecade,whataresomeofyourbiggesttakeawaysandlessonsyou’velearned?Your workethicisunmatched,balancingandrepresentingsomanytalentedartists.
It’sinterestingtohearyousayI’vebeenintheindustryforoveradecade,sincethepathtowhereIamcurrentlywassocircuitous.I playedinacoupleofbandsincollege,DJedforseveralyears,producedhip-hopforafewartists,andsomehowmycurrentworkasa publicistisanamalgamationofallthoseexperiences.
Inacertainway,IstillfeellikeIbarelyhavemyfootthroughthedoorinthemusicindustry,andI’mlearningahundrednewthingsdaily. AlthoughI’mconfidentI’montherightpath,Idon’tnecessarilyseewhatI’mdoingatthismomentasthebe-allend-allforme.
Mybiggestadvicewouldbeknowyourworth,trustyourgut,developyourcommunicationskills,andknowwhentotakeabreak.I appreciatethekindwordsregardingmyworkethic,butthelastpieceofadviceIlistedisthemostimportantoneIcanthinkof.Sooften, whenwe’reinpursuitofourdreams,wecandevelopthisinescapabletunnelvisionandover-commit(thisismeapologizingforgetting theseresponsestoyoulate).Juggling100tasksatonceisn’thealthy,anditcanreallyinhibitproductivity.

Outsideofthemusicindustry,you’reinvolvedwithavarietyofhumanitarianefforts,servingasJuniorBoardatChangeForKidsand directingTurnaroundArts:NewYorkCity(aKennedyCenterinitiativethattransformsunder-resourcedschoolsthroughthearts). Howdidyouendupgettinginvolvedwiththesenoblecauses?Wecommendyouforhelpingmakeadifferenceinthelivesofso many,especiallytheyoungergeneration!
IgrewupgoingtoalittlesleepawaysummercampintheBerkshires.Campwasamazing–Ibecamelifelongfriendswithfolksfromall walksoflife,andabout50%ofthestaffwasinternational.I’msothankfulfortheopportunitytobroadenmyworldviewfromanearly age.Leavinghomeeveryyearallowedmetheabilitytolearnindependenceandresilience,andIdevelopedadeepconnectiontoafew counselorswhobasicallywatchedmegrowup.I’mintouchwithafewofthemtothisday.
IremembersomanypivotalmomentsthatdefinewhoIamtoday,andIthinkit’simportantforallofustotryandmodelthatasadults. Sometimes,atinygestureoranewexperiencecanchangethelifeofsomeoneyoungandimpressionable.IfIcanquoteasongyoumay recognize–“ExperienceisallItrulyknow.”That’samantrasomanypeoplelosesightofastheygrowolder.Somanyproblemsthat plaguetheworld,andthewaywetreatoneanotherstemfromthesimplefactthatpeoplelackthefoundationaltoolsofempathy necessarytoconsideranotherperson’slifeexperience.It’snoone’sfault,that’sjusttheexistingstructureoftheworldwelivein.I remaindedicatedtodoingwhateverIcantoincreaseopportunityandaccessforkids,becauseIhavenoideawhereI’dbewithoutthe widearrayofexperiencesIhadduringmyformativeyears.
WatchingdreamscometofruitionforagroupofpeopleIcaredeeplyaboutiseasilythemostgratifyingpartofallofthis.Notjustthe band,butthecrewandtheentiremanagementteam.
Therearesomanymomentsthatarememorable(andplentythatareslightlyfuzzy).I’llneverforgeteachGoosemas,Resonance,Playing intheSand,Peach(ofcourse),andthewarmreceptionthebandreceivedontheirfirstheadliningwestcoasttour.“EarthlingorAlien?” atWestvillewasablast–certainlynerveracking,butIthinkitwentoverwell.
I’meternallygratefultheguyswerewillingtoplayafewtunesatmywedding.Plentyofmyclosefriendsandfamilyhaveneverseenthe band–everyoneabsolutelylovedtheperformance.Imean,mymomwasgettingDOWNto“SoReady.”I’llneverforgetit.
HowdidtheGreatBeyondpodcastcomeintofruition?Inaway,itfeltlikeanatural extensionofthecommentarythatyouandBruceRobinsonwouldprovidein-between setsduringBingoTourin2020.DidJoeyParisiorBruceapproachyouwiththe podcastidea,orwasitviceversa?
It’sinterestinginretrospect–BingoTourcametogethersofast,andBruceandIdidn’t reallyhavetimetoprep.Wejustkindofdidit,andI’msohappyitworkedout.We receivedatonofpositivefeedbackaftertheshows(andalittlehateinElGoose,butifyou haven’tbeenlambastedinElGoose,haveyoureallymadeit?).Afewfolkssuggested BruceandItrypodcasting,butnoneofthiswouldhavebeenpossiblewithoutJoey.Joey tooktheinitiativetogetthingsstarted,craftaplan,andfollowupwithus.We’renot jokingwhenwesayhe“doesallthework.”
Joey’sinitialideawasforBruceandmetobethehosts,butwedidn’twanttodoitwithout him.Oncewegotintothestudiotorecordourfirstepisode,therewasatangible chemistrybetweenthethreeofus.LandingapartnershipwithOsirisafteronlyahandful ofepisodeswasmind-blowing,wetrulyappreciatethemfortakingachanceonus. “Seriously!?”heexclaimsashenotices FredTheFilm playingontheTVinthecorneroftheroom. “You’rewatchingthisagain!?”Afteracoupleofdrinksandafailedattempttoopenthedoortohis apartment,Daniel(althoughhepreferstobecalled“thecoolguylivingdownstairs”)abruptly stumblesintoCaraandNaz’shouse,andinsertshimselfintoourZoommeetingaswearejust startingtowrapup.Uponnoticingmyvirtualpresence,heviolentlygrabsNaz’sGoose-themed phonecase,andpressesitupagainstthecomputerscreenasifmyfacewereontheotherside. “EverythingisGoosewiththesetwo!”hepassionatelyshouts.“GooseGooseGoose.ALLGOOSE!!”
Oneoftheprimarygoalsof TheelGooseTimes hasbeentofocusonimportantfiguressurrounding theband.Accordingly,thisnewsubsectionfocusesonarguablythemostimportantfiguresinthat category:fans.“ItBurnsWithin”exploresthelivesofourowncommunitymembers,sheddinglight onsomeofthereasonswhysomanyofuschoosetogetinvolvedwiththeGoosecommunity,and howitaffectsourlives.
CaraMitchell and NaziaSalam(Naz),bothoriginallyfromFlorida,havebeenroommatesin Washington,DCforaboutsevenyears.Theywereintroducedtoeachotherattheweddingofa mutualfriend,andthey“danced[their]assesoff”togetherthewholenight. “Itmakesperfectsense thatwemetthatway,” Nazsayswithasmileassherecallsthenight.

ImprovisationalmusicopenedupawholenewworldforCaraandNaz.Aworldfullofextraordinaryexperiencesandemotionsthatwerejustwaitingtobe uncovered. “Assoonashehitthatpeaknote,itwaslikemysoulburstopenorsomething,” Nazsaysasshetriestodescribeamomentsheexperiencedthatday. “ItwasafeelinginmybodythatIhadneverfeltbefore.Iwascrying,thepeoplearoundmewerecrying…Itwasoverwhelming.”
Therearealotoffactorsatplayduringmomentslikethese.Oneaspectofthesentimentcapturedherespeakstotheoverwhelmingfeelingoftogethernessthat existsinourscene.Thejointattention,sharingofintentions,andaffectivestates.Thesenseoffellowshipandcatharticrelease.That“IknowthatyouknowthatI know”thing.Throughcollective,intersubjectivelysharedexperience,webegintoencountersomethingbeyondourimmediateselves.Webegintoexperience (thoughnotalwaysconsciously)anessenceofthehumanmindasitexistscollectively.AndforCaraandNaz,thisexperiencewasbreathtaking, “tosaytheleast.”
AfterthatdayatLockn’,CaraandNazembarkedonadeepjourneyintoTheGratefulDead,whichthenledthemtoJRAD,andGreensky,andBilly,andsoon. “A friendofourshadbeensendingusGoosevideosforawhile.Weknewweweregoingtolikeit,butwewerealreadyobsessedwithmultipleotherbands,andwe justneededsometime.”Goosemas2020iswhenitallhappened.“ThatwasreallyourfirsttimelisteningtoGoose.Anditimmediatelychangedthegameforus.” Anditwasn’tjustthemusicthatdrewthemin. “Itwastheproductionasawhole.Theoutfits,thebehind-the-scenesclips,thefactthattheywereplayingontopof Rockefellercenter…Therewasjustsomuchheartandpersonalitybehindit.” “Wejustwenthamafterthat.”
QuarantineaffordedthemtheopportunitytodeepdiveintoGoose,andtheysoonhadastrongbondwiththebandandtheirmusic.SowhenAugust2021rolled around,despitetheirlong-awaitedtriptoTheBigAppleforDead&CompanyatCitiField,theymadealast-minutesharpturn,andheadedbacktoLockn’Festival grounds,whereitallbegan. “FredFestivalwasmorethanwecould’veeveraskedfor,” Carasayswithtearsinhereyes. “Itwasabsolutelymagical.” Thetwoof themstruggletofindthewordstocaptureit. “AllIrememberisthatdrivehome,” Nazsays. ”WestoppedataWendy’s,andwewerejustsittingthereinthisbooth, staringdownatthetablelike‘whatonearthjusthappened.’IhadnoideahowIwassupposedtojustgotoworkthenextdayasifeverythingwerenormal.” ”We criedsomuchthatnight.” “Therearetrulynowordstodescribewhatitallmeanttous.Butweknowyougetit.”
AndIdogetit.Alotofusgetit.Humanbeingshavebeenexploringthesocial,philosophical,psychological,andculturaldimensionsofmusicfordecades,and thereisalotaboutmusicandthewaysinwhichitaffectsusthatweunderstand.Evenso,therearedeeperdimensionsofmusicthatwehaveyetto conceptualize,andhowmusictakesonthesignificancethatitdoes,asprofoundlyasitdoes,remainsoneofitsgreatmysteries. “AndI’mokaywiththat,” Cara says. “Idon’tfeellikeit’snecessaryformeto‘knowwhatitallmeans’rightnow.Butwhateverishappeninghere,I’mjustsogratefulthatI’mpartofit.”

2. Starttoprepareingredients.Halveandpeelshallot.Grateonehalf onthelargestholesofaboxgrater;placeinamediumbowl.Mince remainingshallot,aswellasthegarlic.Stripthymeleavesfromstems; roughlychopleavesanddiscardstems.
3. Addtheabovechopped/mincedproducetoyourmixingbowlwith gratedshallotandaddbeef,garlic,pankobreadcrumbs,halfofthe thyme,saltandpepper.Gentlycombineandformmixtureintotwo1inch-tallloaves.
4. Placemeatloavesonabakingsheet;brushtopsofloaveswithhalf theketchup.Putthemeatloavesintheoven.

Somepeoplethinkwe’recrazy,seeingthesamebandoverandoveragain-andthat’s fine,theymightberight.SometimesIfeelsomewhatembarrassedwhenpeopleaskme myshowcountandItrytojustleaveitsimplewith“over100”.GettingtoShow#100is alotoffun.
Forme,itwasthistinylittleclubcalledSproutMusicCollectiveinPAon9/6/2018. Naturally,iamverybiasedtowardthisshow,butifyouhavenotalready,Ihighlysuggest youcheckthisshowoutASAP-Iguaranteeyouwillnotbedisappointed.Theentirefirst setisjustastraightheater,withthesecondsetjustashot.Thisvenuewasgreatandit waspackedtothebrim.ManypeopleIknew,manyIdidnot-butbecauseofthese peopleIkeepcomingback.
WithintheGoosecommunitytherearenotmanypeoplethathaveachieved100shows (yet).Offthetopofmyhead,Icanonlythinkoftwoothersbesidesmyself(Gregand Bruce).Atthebeginningofsecondset,Rickgaveashoutouttomefor100whichwas awesome,butitwasoverlookedwithashout-outtotwopeopleforitbeingtheir50th show.Thesepeoplearenowsomeofmygreatestfriends.Sure,itmighthavetakenme 20showstofinallyremembertheirnames,butthat'sbesidesthepoint.
