Musiciansarelikemagicians,inasense, asbothutilizetheirskills/talentsto entertainanaudience.Muchlikea magicshow,musicalperformancescan bespellbindingandmemorable. However,thekeydifferencewithgreat musicians-asopposedtomagiciansisthatthereisnodeceptionatplayhere. Whilemagicianstrytodeceiveour eyesthroughslight-of-handtricksor illusions,youcan’tfakeagreat musicalperformance.

Musicisauniversallanguagethat comesfromthesoulandifitisn’t authenticortrue,peoplecantell.Ina way,greatmusicislikereal-lifemagicin howpowerfulitcanbe-resonatingand affectingpeopleinprofoundways.When westarttoassociatemusicwith memories,listeningtoasongyearslater hasthepotentialtobringusbackat completelyrandommoments throughoutourlives.

Whenthinkingaboutshows,themost memorableonesaretheshowswhere musicianstakechancesartistically-as wellasmusically–topushtheirsound further(innewdirections)andfindnew waystoengagewiththeaudience.Take, forexample, PeterAnspach (vocals,keysandguitar),whoconstantly leavesalastingimpressiononfansfor hishonest,energeticandjoyfulnature on-stage.Peter’searnedthenickname “Handini”becauseofhowheeffortlessly switchesbetweentheguitar,keysand singingdutieswithease(almostlike magic).Off-stage,heregularlyengages withfansontheband’ssocialmedia pageandworksonavarietyofother projectssurroundingtheband(aswellas hisotherprojectslikeGreatBlue).

DuringWinterBreak, TheelGooseTimes hadtheopportunitytochatwithPeter abouthisfamilylife,historywithGoose, secrettonavigatingjamsandmore:

Forourreaderswhomightnotbe familiar,youcomefromafamilyof musiciansandyourMom’ssideofthe familyhaspasseddowntheimportance ofmusicforgenerations.Wasthata bigpartofwhyyoupursuedmusic professionally?Wouldyouconsider themsomeofyourbiggestinfluences?

MymomRita,sisterLindsayandaunt Andreaareallmusicteachers.Theyare withoutadoubtmystrongestmusical influencesandalwayshavebeen!My grandmother,LindaCaruso,(motherto mymomandaunt)frequentlysangtome inItalianwhenIwasverylittle.

Thosesongsstillcarrywithmetoday,as wellassomanyothersmyMomsangto meeverydaywhilegrowingup.Mysister wasinvolvedinmusicaltheaterinhigh schoolandIwouldlovetoseeher perform.Iusedtositintheorchestrapit withthemusicians.Ilovedhearingthe grandnessofthefullorchestra-itwas infectious!I’msurethisiswhymusic becamemypassionasIgrewup,though thereweredefinitelyafewyearsIdreamt ofplayingshortstopfortheNewYork Yankees!ThankstomyDadandMomfor alwayspushingmetobewellrounded.

InmycolleagueLisa’samazing interviewwithyourmomRitainVolume 5,shesaidthatyouare“enthusiasm andjoypersonified”andthatyou“wear yourheartyoursleeve.”Anyonewho watchesashowin-personorona streamwouldagreewiththis-its infectiouswatchingyouon-stage!

Wouldyousaythatmusiciscathartic foryouinalotofways?Doyoufeedoff oftheaudiences’energy?

Thatsoundslikemymom!Shehas alwaysbelievedinmeand,throughyears ofrelentlesslove,isresponsiblefor myconfidenceandfreedomofexpression onstage.

Musichasbecomeincreasinglycathartic aslifecontinues.Witheveryemotion,bad orgood,comesmusicalideas.I’vebeen workingonchannelingthoseideasinto songseversinceIwasabout16years old.Writinghelpsmeprocess,andthen playingbackthosesongsallowsmeto reflectonthoseideasoverthespanof years.Evenasonglike"Yeti,"which admittedlyhasprettywhimsicallyrics, bringsmebacktoatimewhereGreat BluewasplayingbargigsaroundNew England.Itwasanexcitingtimeforus,we weremakingmusicandhavingablast. Ifeelthatenergyinthatsongeverytime weplayit.

Whenonstage,Ilovefeedingoffthe energyoftheaudience.Ittakesmetoa higherlevel,inspiresmetoplaybetter, andgivesmethestaminatoplaynight afternight.Weareallsogratefultoshare oursongswithsomanypeopleandhave themsharesomuchenergybackwithus.

Walkusthroughyourhistorywith Goose,asyourecentlycelebrated yourfive-yearanniversarywith theband. Congratulations!

That’sprettywildtothinkabout!When Ijoined,wewereabouttoopenfor Spaffordonasmalltourin theNortheast.

Ihadneverplayedtoanaudienceover 100peopleandourfirstshowwiththem wasinDetroittoacrowdof600.ThatontopofthefactthatIhadneverplayed theroleofkeyboardistinaband-was prettynerveracking.Iamsogratefulfor theopportunitytoplayinthisband. Learninghowtoplayaninstrumentwhile runningaroundthecountryplayingshows isexhilarating.There’snobetterwayto doit.IwasahugefanofGoosebeforeI joined,andIstillam.ThewayRick,Ben, andTrevorplaytogetherwasalways infectioustome.Iamsohonoredtostill beonstagewiththemandtohavethe opportunitytoplaywithJeffaswell. PlayingwithJeffhasalreadytaughtme somuchaboutmusic,hehasasucha strongfeelnomatterwhichinstrument he’son.Thishasbeenonehell ofajourney!

Whatwasitlikejoiningthebandand takingonavarietyofroles?Outsideof keysandsupportingguitar,youalso wereheavilyinvolvedwithmixing soundboards,aswellashavingahand intheoverallmarketingandsocial presenceoftheband.Howwereyou abletobalancethoserolesso effectively?Youdidanamazingjob.

ItwassomethingIhadbeendoingin GreatBluesincetheinceptionofthat band.Intheearlydays,youhavetolearn todoeverythingyourselfbecauseyou can’treallyaffordotherwise.Andyou soonlearnthatit’sveryhardtofind peoplethatwouldputinthekindofeffort thatyouyourselfwould.SowhenIjoined Goose,IwashappytohelpinanywayI could.MattKolinski,ourmanagerand bookingagentofthetime,wasagreat helpaswell.Hewouldhelpstrategizeon videoreleasesaswellasamultitude otherthings.InthecaseofthePeach Fest2019video,whichhasledtoalotof folksdiscoverGoose,ouraudiorecording stoppedbeforethefinaltwosongs.I reachedouttoMattandwithinadayhe hadsomehowsourcedabackup recordingfromsomeoneatthefestivalso wecouldputoutthefullsetvideowithin twodaysofthefestivalbeingover.

Thesedays,nowwithsuchastrongteam, Iwalkoffstageandthevideooftheshow isdone(thankstoourvideoteamDanny, Marta,andCoach),andarecordingis essentiallymixedandreadytoroll (thankstoouraudioteam:Eric,Sam, Padge,andNaveed).Ourmanagers, BenBaruchandDaveDiCianni,arealso massivelysupportiveandcreativewithall ofthemoveswemake.Theirexpertiseis abigreasonwhythisbandhascontinued togrow.It’samazingtohavesucha supportiveteamaroundus.

Goosehasseensignificantsuccesssince youjoinedinlate2017:twoalbumsand twoEPs(aswellasthe TedTapes and variouslivereleases);late-nightTV appearances;showsatlandmarkvenues andfestivals,withsit-insfromlegends likeBobWeirandTreyAnastasio.What aresomeofyourfavoriteshowsand/or memoriessofar?

Therehavebeensomanyincredible experiences.Oneofthebestpartshasjust beengettingtoexperienceitallwithsucha closeknitgroupoffriends.Ourbandand crewareverytightandwhenyouspendlots ofhourstogetherinthewaywehave, youbecomefamily.

OneveryfondmemoryformeistheFall 2021tour.Asaunit,wewerestartingtoget verytight.Jeffhadbeeninthebandforover ayear,ourvideoteamwasdialedin,there werealotofexcitingthingsonthehorizon (Anewalbum,asoldoutwestcoasttour, RadioCity,RedRocks,justtonameafew!). WeweredownSouthforourfirsttimein Atlanta,NoLa,Texas,etc.Itwasstillatime whereCOVIDprotocolwasinplace,sowe werejustallowedtohangoutwithinour band/crewgroup.Thisledtosomeserious bonding,andinmyopinionsomevery foundationalshowsthatpavedthewayfor whatIconsidertobeoneofthebestyears ofGooseandmylife,2022.

Arethereanymusiciansyouwouldbe mostexcitedtocollaboratewithinthe future?Doyouhaveany“bucketlist” venuesthatyouhaven’thadthe opportunitytoplayyet?

I’mstillverymuchhopingtomeet PageMcConnell,andwouldlovetotalk keyboardswithhim.Inaddition,itwouldbe greattocollabmorewithFatherJohnMisty, hewasariotwhenwehungoutatRadio City,andhe’ssomusicaltoo!Iwouldalso lovetocollaboratewithAnaïsMitchell,she’s oneofmyabsolutefavoritesingers.In termsofvenues,SPACisgoingtobepretty specialformethissummer.Andofcourse TheGorge,Hampton,and….MSG!

2022wasahugeyearintermsofnew originals…it’slikethere’sacreative renaissancegoingonwithinthebandand Ilovetoseethatgrowth.Hasthe songwritingprocessevolvedforyouas you’vegrownwiththebandandwhat inspiresyou?Aresongsbuiltoffof melodiesorlyricstypicallyforyou?

Myprocesshasbeeninafewplacesover mytimeintheband.Atonepoint,Iwasvery intomakingdemosonmycomputer("Time toFlee,""WhiteLights"),thenduring2020I wasallaboutjustwritingwithanacoustic guitarorWurlitzerkeyboard("Moonrise," "TheWhales,""Honeybee,""RedBird").

I’veactuallybeenwritingalotduring thisJanuary/Februarybreakand doingamixofdemosandacoustic guitarwriting.Ifeelmoreinspired thaneveranditreallyisthanksto thistimeoffthatI’mabletowriteso effectively.Withoutthespacefrom touring,it’salmostimpossibletoget intothesongwritingmindset.So thanksforeveryone’spatiencewhile wewritesongs.

Howhaveyourguitarandkeyboard rigsevolvedovertime?Canyou walkusthroughwhatyourrigwas whenyoustartedwithGooseover fiveyearsagoversuswhatit istoday?

Myguitarrigisveryclosetohowit waswhenIjoinedtheband,I’vejust switchedtoaStratstyleguitarand backtoaFenderamp(Leogotitright thefirsttime!).

Thekeyboardsontheotherhand havegrownquiteabit.Istartedwith justtwokeyboards,apiano/organ boardandasynth.NowI’vegot dedicatedkeyboardsforpiano, electricpiano,organ,clavinet,and twosynths.Itisreallyamazingtobe abletotourwiththeactual instrumentsmyoriginalkeyboard wasjusttryingtoreplicate.

ShoutouttoCoach,mykeyboard tech,foralwayshelpingmesetupmy keys,andtoouramazingsound squad,SamBardani,EricLoomis, PadgeMcQuillan,andMartaGoedde fortech-ingthesoundssowell.

What’syoursecrettonavigating throughsomeofthemorecomplex jamsandsuddenchangesinwritten setlistsduringanygivenshow?For example,inajam,whatmakesyou wanttochoosethekeysoverguitar, orviceversa?Isitacombinationof listeningintentlyagainstwhatthe othersareplaying,inaddition towatchingforspecific signs/bodylanguage?

Whentheimprovisationisfluid,we don’treallythinkaboutitatall-weare justreactingandlistening.Thesame goesforwhatI’mdoing.Iwon’thave theconsciousthoughttogotoacertain keyboard,I’lljustgothere.Itreallyis amazingwhenit’sworkinglikethat, thosearethebestmoments.

It’sveryeasytogetdiscouragedand stuck.Youhavetokeepgoing.Youhave tobenaiveinasenseinordertosee thebrightsideoftheunattendedgigs, longdrives,andlittle-to-nosleep.Inthe end,ifyouaregettingclosertothe peoplearoundyouandmakingmusic thatgivesyougoosebumps,then you’vesucceeded.

TellusmoreaboutyourPA-RC collaborationwithyourgirlfriend Beckyandhowthatbegan.Wheredid themantras“PhoneDown,EyesUp, HeartOpen”and“EverythingYouNeed IsWithinYou”originatefrom?Do thesebothreflectyouroverall philosophyonlife?

PA-RCwasoriginallyinspiredbya JayBlakesbergphotographinwhich manypeoplearefreelydancingata Deadconcertinthe70s.Thephotois amazingbecausetherearenophones, andeveryoneisfullyuninhibited.Nowa days,it’shardtofindaphotoofacrowd withoutaphoneinit(especiallyinthe non-jamscenes,thevibeispretty phone-downatourshows).Spurredon bythisidea,IaskedBeckyifshewould beinterestedindesigningabumper stickerformykeyboardsthatsaid “PhoneDown,EyesUp,HeartOpen”.

Shecamebacktomewithwhatwouldbe thefinaldesignaswellasamockupofa t-shirt.Iwasimmediatelylike,“Wehaveto printtheseshirtstoo!”Andshewaslike, “Waitwhat,buthow?”.Wegotthehelp fromalocalConnecticutartistandprinter, DavidCondon(@AndHowGraphics),and hehelpedusmakethedreamhappen— overnightingafewshirtstoourDenver showinJuly2021soBeckyandI couldmodelthemandpostthemonline. Wesoldoutsoonlaterandtheentire thingtookonalifeofit’sown.Thename PA-RCcomesfromourinitials, PeterAnspach-RebeccaChinman.

“EverythingYouNeedIsWithinYou”isa mantrabasedaroundthefactthatwe haveallthatweneedalreadybylooking inward.Thereisalottobeexploredinside andweencourageanyonetofindthatfor themselves.BeckyandIlovecreating together(somethingthatbondsus)and haveplanstolaunchanewPA-RCdesign soonwiththeideaofdonatingallthe profitstocharity.

Recipe#7: "She'sMyHoneybee"Pancakes

Forthisrecipe,Iwantedtodoadifferent kindofcollaboration.Wehaveamember ofourcommunity,somemightcallher "TheQueenBee"she'ssomeonejustlikeme. Ofcourse,Iamtalkingabouttheoneandonly KathyKerkes.LastSummer,Ireachedoutto KathyandtoldherIhadagreatideafora recipeusingherhoney.Shegraciouslysentme somealongwithsomeofherhomemadehot honeyandoneofthoselittlehoneyscoop things(yaknowthelittleballonthestickdeal.)

Anyway,thisrecipeoriginatesfromaplacein theworldthatcoulddefinitelyusesomegood vibes,maybeapancakeortwoanddefinitely someGooseintheirlives.Nomatteryour viewsonwar,iteffectsalotoffamilies.Solet's notpointfingers(unlesstheyareintheair lookingforanextraticket)let'sjustsendsome lovetothepeoplewho'slivesarebeing effectedbysomethingtheyhave nocontrolover.

Icameacrossthisconceptinmytimeasa farmtotablechefatahighendbrunch restaurant.Itwasoriginallyforamultilayered cakewithverythinlayersbutIwantedtomake awesomepancakes.Pancakessogoodyou couldeatthemontheceilingandflipthemoff thewall.AndIwasalsolookingforsomething different.Becauseofitsorigins(andbecause itmakesmoresense),thisrecipeusesmetric measurements.But,Iknowforafactthatyou allhaveascaleinyourhousesomewhere,so cleanitoff(ordon't)anduseitbecauseit reallywillmakeahugedifference!

Ingredients:

170g Honey

445g APFlour

100g BrownSugar

2tsp BakingPowder

3ea Eggs

650ml Buttermilk

¼tsp Salt

1tsp Vanilla

1pt SourCream

4-8oz VTMapleSyrup

Directions:

Duringthewinters,wewereintheFort Myers,FLareawheremyparentsowneda secondhomeandJeffersonYacht.My parentswerenon-residentmembersof UseppaIsland,abarrierislandWestofPine IslandandNorthofCaptivaIsland.Asa family,wespentmanyyearsonUseppa IslandlivingontheJeffersonattheisland’s marina.Whenmyparentspassedaway,I purchasedahometocarryouttheirlegacy. “AsaJuniorBoardmemberofthe IndianapolisSymphony,Ihelpedwiththe SymphonyPettingZoo.Iwouldtakethe childrenwithme,often.Thegirlsfellinlove withtheviolin.MyneighborfromGermany taughtviolin,soitwasveryeasyforthemto takelessons.Theystartedwhentheywere threeandfiveyearsold.WhenAndrewwas oldenough,hepickedupthedrums!Istarted agaragebandfortheneighborhood…My fatherlovedfindinginstrumentstoaddin.He grewupplayingtheEFlatSaxophone!”

LittledidsheknowPaulawasfosteringthe infancyofwhatwouldevolveintoGoedde SoundandLight.“Eventually,asthechildren grewolder,Martapickedupguitarandvoice. AndrewandMartadecidedtobuilda recordingstudioinoneofourwalk-inclosets. Theyplacedacameraandmicrophoneto communicateouttoAndrew’srecording console.Werecordedmanyhigh schoolartists.”

Phaseoneofbusinessbeganin2017-2018 whenAndrewandMartawereincollege. “AndrewcametomeandaskedifIcouldbuy somespeakersandwashlightstohelpout theartistswhowepreviouslyrecordedand werestillperforming.Iagreed,andittookoff fromthere.”

Theheatfromoutsidecalledwiththepromiseofearlysummerbreezes.Tonight wasachancetodetourtheconfusing,circularpaththatlifehadbecome,andshe wasreadyforit.Lookingforwardtothisformonths,shehadnoideathatthisone eveningwouldsendherinanotherdirectionentirely,evenifjustinherownheart.

Squintingintothewindshieldonthewaydowntown,theplaylistdiditsthing.

“Summer’supinahaze,”shethought,alreadywishingforcoolerweather.Itwas allsovery…June.

I’vebeenholding on totheweightofthesedecisions alittletootight,sheknew.At somepointitwouldbetimetofigurethingsout.Fornow,itwasthetimetobewith herfriends,someofwhomwerealreadyontheothersideofaveryfamiliardoor thatheldsomanygoodmemories.

Themusicstarted,anditwaslikegoingbackintime(herfavoritepastime). Opener.Headliner.Dance. Alittlewatertocooldown.Asitallended,thesimplest hello.Italmostknockedherover.Strugglingtomakesenseofthechargethathad justbeentransferred,herusualhappynumbnesswasreplacedbysomething completelysurprising.Ithadbeenlifetimesagothatshehadfeltsuchaninstant connectiontoanotherperson.

“AndIam,”shethoughtimmediately,tryingtounderstandwhathadjust happened,“swimminguponatide”ofsomethingnewandhardtograsp.

Shecouldsenseit,though.Maybe somebodyiswaiting,andthetruthisthatshe hasbeenwaiting,too.Tofeelthisway.Shehasnowordsforit,butasthe conversationcontinued,thisflashoftime,shebecameadifferentversion ofherself.

“Ihavebeengettingby,”shethought,“andIam sotiredandladen pretending everythingisOK.”Atthatmomentshewasstartingtorealizetheextentofthewalls thathadbeenbuiltovertheyearssothatshecouldkeepgoing.Thosewallshad blockedinsomuch,andkeptsomuchofherselfout.Butthereitwas;this heat makingthosewaves betweenthem.Couldanyoneelsefeelit,orwasitjusther?

Andjustlikethat,themomentwasover.Herfeet onthepavement wantedtogo backtohim,butshemovedtowardhome.Assomeoneknownfordoingtheright thing,allofthisfeltlikeitwashappeningtosomeoneelse.Shetriesnottothink aboutwhatitcouldmean.

Inthemorning,shewondersifshehasfound someotherhaven inthisperson,and howthatcouldevenbepossible.Shecanbarelyfaceit.Thoughtskeepemerging, onebyone;thishasneverhappenedtoherbefore,andsheis completelyunprepared.

Andthenshehearsthewhistlefromnexttoher.Anotherhello,aninvitation,so kind.Hehasnoideaofthecomplexities.Thevinesaregrowingupthewalls,trying toreachher.Itiseverythingshewashopingfor,anddreading,atthesametime.

“HowcanIacknowledgethis?”hermindkeepsasking.“No.Isimplycan’t,”no matterwhatshemaybefeeling.Soshesitsmostoftheday, hidoutandshaking “Lord,whatishappeningtome?”

She’sconvincedherselfthatsayingnoistherightway,theonlyway.Shehates herselfforit,boththedeclineofacceptance,andtheoverwhelmingdesiretodo justthat.Thenextmonthspasswithnoresolution.Sheisembroiledinapersonal battlethatnooneelseknows.Atthesamemoment,acknowledgingtoherselfthat somethingmassivehastakenhold,andberatingherselfforevendaringtothinkit. She’strying.Aninnerresolution.Butshe’snotherselfandhasn’tbeeninawhile. “Well,I’mgonnabebacksomeday,”shesays.But….whatifthisissomethingreal?

Causenoone’sholdingthesehandstieduponme,sheknows.Sheisfreeto makebigdecisions-tobehonest.Butsheholdsback;fearfultosaycertainthings eventoherself.Thattheseyearsofbuildingalifecouldbeover,havebeenover.

AndallI’vecaughtofasoul isthisbeautifulpersonwhovisitsmeinsmall andlovelyways.

Ishouldwalkaway,shouldstopthis…whateverthisis,shesaysoverandover. ButIdon’twantto.Andallofasudden,shecanunderstandwhypeoplefind themselvesinprecarioussituations.Shefeelsguilty,weak,elated,andsadwith everypressingmoment.

Soshemakesthequipsandlittlebylittle,shareswhosheis;everytimeknowing thatshe’sgettingindeeper.Theconnectionstumbleoutofthinair,toomanyto count,andshefeelspowerlesstolookaway.“Theworstpartofallofthis is knowingit'sonme,”herheadsaysinthemorehonestmoments.

“Well,I’mtiredofwaiting,”herheartrespondsback.“It’salreadytakenalittletoo longtogetbackupfromtheselastfewyears.”

Backandforthitgoes.Shemanagestokeepallofthistoherself.Anddaybyday thefeelingseemstogrowuntilit’snotaquestionanylonger.Hesaysitfirst.“So showmethewayin,”he’sasking,makingthefeelingsbothofthemhaveclear. It’sbreakingherheart,becausehe’stheonlyonesayingthewordstheyboth knowaretrue.Shefretswitheveryresponse;knowingitwouldbesoeasytosay, “metoo.”Itispainfulnottorespondbackwitheverythingshehas.

“Iknowthatit'sblatant,lord.”Thishasgoneontoolong.Somethingisgoingto happenthatcan’tbetakenback.Alreadymissingthememoriesofwhatcould havebeen,shehalfheartedlyturnsaway.

“Wealljustneedalittledirectionsometimes,”shethinks,wishingshehad onerightnow.

“So,”sheasksofherself,“holdoutmywholenesssothatIcanthinkclearly,likea diamondeyeinthecold,coldwater.”

Herdreamsarealwaysthesame;theplacesshelovesfromherearliest memories. Nevershowingusalone;we’llgosomeday,shethinks,knowingit's lessandlesslikely.But,maybelifeistakingherbacktowhereshestarted; to whereI’veknownusallalong.Theybothcomefromthesametime,thesame place,buthaveonlycircledtheairaboveeachother.Untilnow.
