Do you believe in magic?

Musicians are like magicians, in a sense, as both utilize their skills/talents to entertain an audience. Much like a magic show, musical performances can be spellbinding and memorable.

However, the key difference with great musicians - as opposed to magicians is that there is no deception at play here.

While magicians try to deceive our eyes through slight-of-hand tricks or illusions, you can’t fake a great musical performance.

Music is a universal language that comes from the soul and if it isn’t authentic or true, people can tell. In a way, great music is like real-life magic in how powerful it can be - resonating and affecting people in profound ways. When we start to associate music with memories, listening to a song years later has the potential to bring us back at completely random moments throughout our lives.

When thinking about shows, the most memorable ones are the shows where musicians take chances artistically - as well as musically – to push their sound further (in new directions) and find new ways to engage with the audience. Take, for example, Peter Anspach (vocals, keys and guitar), who constantly leaves a lasting impression on fans for his honest, energetic and joyful nature on-stage. Peter’s earned the nickname “Handini” because of how he effortlessly switches between the guitar, keys and singing duties with ease (almost like magic). Off-stage, he regularly engages with fans on the band’s social media page and works on a variety of other projects surrounding the band (as well as his other projects like Great Blue).

During Winter Break, The el Goose Times had the opportunity to chat with Peter about his family life, history with Goose, secret to navigating jams and more: For our readers who might not be familiar, you come from a family of musicians and your Mom’s side of the family has passed down the importance of music for generations. Was that a big part of why you pursued music professionally? Would you consider them some of your biggest influences?

My mom Rita, sister Lindsay and aunt Andrea are all music teachers. They are without a doubt my strongest musical influences and always have been! My grandmother, Linda Caruso, (mother to my mom and aunt) frequently sang to me in Italian when I was very little.

Those songs still carry with me today, as well as so many others my Mom sang to me every day while growing up. My sister was involved in musical theater in high school and I would love to see her perform. I used to sit in the orchestra pit with the musicians. I loved hearing the grandness of the full orchestra - it was infectious! I’m sure this is why music became my passion as I grew up, though there were definitely a few years I dreamt of playing shortstop for the New York Yankees! Thanks to my Dad and Mom for always pushing me to be well rounded.

In my colleague Lisa’s amazing interview with your mom Rita in Volume 5, she said that you are “enthusiasm and joy personified” and that you “wear your heart your sleeve.” Anyone who watches a show in-person or on a stream would agree with this - its infectious watching you on-stage!

Would you say that music is cathartic for you in a lot of ways? Do you feed off of the audiences’ energy?

That sounds like my mom! She has always believed in me and, through years of relentless love, is responsible for my confidence and freedom of expression on stage.

I had never played to an audience over 100 people and our first show with them was in Detroit to a crowd of 600. That on top of the fact that I had never played the role of keyboardist in a band - was pretty nerve racking. I am so grateful for the opportunity to play in this band.

Learning how to play an instrument while running around the country playing shows is exhilarating. There’s no better way to do it. I was a huge fan of Goose before I joined, and I still am. The way Rick, Ben, and Trevor play together was always infectious to me. I am so honored to still be on stage with them and to have the opportunity to play with Jeff as well.

Playing with Jeff has already taught me so much about music, he has a such a strong feel no matter which instrument he’s on. This has been one hell of a journey!

What was it like joining the band and taking on a variety of roles? Outside of keys and supporting guitar, you also were heavily involved with mixing soundboards, as well as having a hand in the overall marketing and social presence of the band. How were you able to balance those roles so effectively? You did an amazing job.

It was something I had been doing in Great Blue since the inception of that Music has become increasingly cathartic band. In the early days, you have to learn to do everything yourself because you as life continues. With every emotion, bad can’t really afford otherwise. And you or good, comes musical ideas. I’ve been soon learn that it’s very hard to find working on channeling those ideas into people that would put in the kind of effort songs ever since I was about 16 years that you yourself would. Goose has seen significant success since you joined in late 2017: two albums and two EPs (as well as the Ted Tapes and various live releases); late-night TV appearances; shows at landmark venues and festivals, with sit-ins from legends like Bob Weir and Trey Anastasio. What are some of your favorite shows and/or memories so far?

There have been so many incredible experiences. One of the best parts has just been getting to experience it all with such a close knit group of friends. Our band and crew are very tight and when you spend lots of hours together in the way we have, you become family.

One very fond memory for me is the Fall 2021 tour. As a unit, we were starting to get very tight. Jeff had been in the band for over a year, our video team was dialed in, there were a lot of exciting things on the horizon (A new album, a sold out west coast tour, Radio City, Red Rocks, just to name a few!).

We were down South for our first time in Atlanta, NoLa, Texas, etc. It was still a time where COVID protocol was in place, so we were just allowed to hang out within our band/crew group. This led to some serious bonding, and in my opinion some very foundational shows that paved the way for what I consider to be one of the best years of Goose and my life, 2022.

Are there any musicians you would be most excited to collaborate with in the future? Do you have any “bucket list” venues that you haven’t had the opportunity to play yet?

I’m still very much hoping to meet Page McConnell, and would love to talk keyboards with him. In addition, it would be great to collab more with Father John Misty, he was a riot when we hung out at Radio City, and he’s so musical too! I would also love to collaborate with Anaïs Mitchell, she’s one of my absolute favorite singers. In terms of venues, SPAC is going to be pretty special for me this summer. And of course The Gorge, Hampton, and….MSG!

I’ve actually been writing a lot during this January/February break and doing a mix of demos and acoustic guitar writing. I feel more inspired than ever and it really is thanks to this time off that I’m able to write so effectively. Without the space from touring, it’s almost impossible to get into the songwriting mindset. So thanks for everyone’s patience while we write songs.

What’s your secret to navigating through some of the more complex jams and sudden changes in written setlists during any given show? For example, in a jam, what makes you want to choose the keys over guitar, or vice versa? Is it a combination of listening intently against what the others are playing, in addition to watching for specific signs/body language?

How have your guitar and keyboard rigs evolved over time? Can you walk us through what your rig was when you started with Goose over five years ago versus what it is today?

When the improvisation is fluid, we don’t really think about it at all - we are just reacting and listening. The same goes for what I’m doing. I won’t have the conscious thought to go to a certain keyboard, I’ll just go there. It really is amazing when it’s working like that, those are the best moments.

My guitar rig is very close to how it was when I joined the band, I’ve just switched to a Strat style guitar and back to a Fender amp (Leo got it right the first time!).

2022 was a huge year in terms of new originals…it’s like there’s a creative renaissance going on within the band and I love to see that growth. Has the songwriting process evolved for you as you’ve grown with the band and what inspires you? Are songs built off of melodies or lyrics typically for you?

The keyboards on the other hand have grown quite a bit. I started with just two keyboards, a piano/organ board and a synth. Now I’ve got dedicated keyboards for piano, electric piano, organ, clavinet, and two synths. It is really amazing to be able to tour with the actual instruments my original keyboard was just trying to replicate.

My process has been in a few places over my time in the band. At one point, I was very into making demos on my computer ("Time to Flee," "White Lights"), then during 2020 I was all about just writing with an acoustic guitar or Wurlitzer keyboard ("Moonrise," "The Whales," "Honeybee," "Red Bird").

Shout out to Coach, my keyboard tech, for always helping me set up my keys, and to our amazing sound squad, Sam Bardani, Eric Loomis, Padge McQuillan, and Marta Goedde for tech-ing the sounds so well.

A show full of those moments would be 3/12/22 (Philadelphia, PA) or 12/16/22 (Broomfield, CO). Amazing flow-state was achieved. Besides that, sometimes Rick will give cues if we are off on a tangent and we want to return to the original theme. It’s all a matter of eye contact. First he’ll look to Trevor to signal, and once we both see that Trevor has acknowledged the queue, Rick will look at me (hopefully Ben, Jeff, and I will be watching this entire exchange), and we pivot.

What are some of the biggest lessons you’ve learned so far while touring with Goose and your other projects like Great Blue?

Positivity and a good attitude are crucial for the touring lifestyle.

It’s very easy to get discouraged and stuck. You have to keep going. You have to be naive in a sense in order to see the bright side of the unattended gigs, long drives, and little-to-no sleep. In the end, if you are getting closer to the people around you and making music that gives you goosebumps, then you’ve succeeded.

Tell us more about your PA-RC collaboration with your girlfriend Becky and how that began. Where did the mantras “Phone Down, Eyes Up, Heart Open” and “Everything You Need Is Within You” originate from? Do these both reflect your overall philosophy on life?

PA-RC was originally inspired by a Jay Blakesberg photograph in which many people are freely dancing at a Dead concert in the 70s. The photo is amazing because there are no phones, and everyone is fully uninhibited. Now a days, it’s hard to find a photo of a crowd without a phone in it (especially in the non-jam scenes, the vibe is pretty phone-down at our shows). Spurred on by this idea, I asked Becky if she would be interested in designing a bumper sticker for my keyboards that said “Phone Down, Eyes Up, Heart Open”.

She came back to me with what would be the final design as well as a mock up of a t-shirt. I was immediately like, “We have to print these shirts too!” And she was like, “Wait what, but how?”. We got the help from a local Connecticut artist and printer, David Condon (@AndHowGraphics), and he helped us make the dream happen — overnighting a few shirts to our Denver show in July 2021 so Becky and I could model them and post them online.

We sold out soon later and the entire thing took on a life of it’s own. The name PA-RC comes from our initials, Peter Anspach - Rebecca Chinman.

“Everything You Need Is Within You” is a mantra based around the fact that we have all that we need already by looking inward. There is a lot to be explored inside and we encourage anyone to find that for themselves. Becky and I love creating together (something that bonds us) and have plans to launch a new PA-RC design soon with the idea of donating all the profits to charity.

What are some of your favorite pastimes and favorite hobbies, outside of music?

I have many! Getting outdoors in some capacity has always brought me clarity.

I’ve done some long thru hikes, camping, baseball, surfing, snowboarding, rock climbing; it all brings me so much joy and I feel so great afterwards. I also love reading, cooking, and recently have gotten into ceramics through Becky (she’s excellent!).

Do you have any parting words or thoughts for our community?

Sure! Thank you all so much for supporting this wonderful newspaper. I love to see when our community comes together to work creatively, help others, or just to meet new people. Human interaction has never been more important. I encourage everyone to strike up conversation before our show and during set break with the folks around you. We are stronger together.

Spring: A Look Back

with Ryan Storm Goose is a band that thrives in the change of season – Spring and Fall. In the era of modern Goose (read: 2021 to the present), the band’s touring schedule has focused much more heavily on spring and fall than the typical summer. As they embark on their 24-date 2022 spring run, I wanted to take a look back at the spring tours from the past couple of years as an opportunity to relive some incredible moments and offer a fantastic jumping-off point for newer fans.

Spring 2021 Emerging for a small run of dates after taking the first three months of the year to relax and record Dripfield, Goose played at Florida’s Suwannee Rising festival on April 9th – a two-set performance that set the tone for the year with energetic and tight jams. The setclosing “All I Need” -> “Jive Lee” acted as a warning to fans: 2021 was going to be the year of the Goose (at the time, we were unaware that there would be numerous consecutive “years of the Goose”).

Their first headlining shows consisted of six dates in early May, where the band debuted their new touring rigs – nearly everyone had new gear. The infamous thunderstorm-plagued May 3rd show saw the first significant foray into their new and spacey Ted Tapesinspired jamming style with a slow-burn “Arrow” and a dark take on “Yeti.” Returning for the second night at the Frederick Fairgrounds, Peter’s Vintage Vibe made itself known for the first time in a legendary 24-minute “Creatures,” the first version of the song with the funky keys-lead groove we are so used to now. With a stop on the way in Charleston, Goose arrived at the Caverns in Tennessee for a two-night stand to close the May leg of tour. These shows would quickly become legendary, featuring the first on-stage full-band acoustic performance, the first full performance of the Jive Triptych culminating in a 21-minute “Jive II,” and the live debut of “Moby.”

The second night also saw the first “Tumblé.”

Spring 2022 Hot on the heels of an incredible west coast leg in January and February along with their arena debut at Goosemas VII, the quintet played ten dates in March that stand as possibly the strongest run of theirs to date.

Kicking off with two nights in Washington DC, Goose delivered jamfilled sets with immediate landmark versions of “Drive,” “Wysteria Lane,” “Pancakes,” and “All I Need.” The shows continued the trend of early 2022 dark jamming as the band rolled on to Charlotte and dropped a slick “Slow Ready -> Hot Tea” absolutely drenched in psychedelia and Peter’s arpeggiating synth. Two nights in Nashville featured the first “Rockdale” to cross the 20-minute mark as well as an even-more-legendary “Pancakes.” A stop in Knoxville on the way north with some more dark exploration led to Royal Oak, where Goose delivered their longest jam to date; a “Rosewood Heart” clocking in at a whopping 38 minutes. The tour then closed out with an incredible night in Cleveland (“Tumble,” “Rockdale,” and the whole second set) and two in Philadelphia. The tour-closing concert featured a four-song first set and absolutely behemoth versions of jams across the extended night.

Goose has taken the past few springs as opportunities for huge musical growth. We can only eagerly await the incredible songs and jams that await over the next six weeks – there’s going to be a lot to cover in the next issue of the EGT!

Recipe #7: "She's My Honeybee" Pancakes with Chef Rick Gallego & special guest Kathy Kerkes For this recipe, I wanted to do a different kind of collaboration. We have a member of our community, some might call her "The Queen Bee" she's someone just like me.

Of course, I am talking about the one and only Kathy Kerkes. Last Summer, I reached out to Kathy and told her I had a great idea for a recipe using her honey. She graciously sent me some along with some of her homemade hot honey and one of those little honey scoop things (ya know the little ball on the stick deal.)

Anyway, this recipe originates from a place in the world that could definitely use some good vibes, maybe a pancake or two and definitely some Goose in their lives. No matter your views on war, it effects a lot of families. So let's not point fingers (unless they are in the air looking for an extra ticket) let's just send some love to the people who's lives are being effected by something they have no control over.

I came across this concept in my time as a farm to table chef at a high end brunch restaurant. It was originally for a multilayered cake with very thin layers but I wanted to make awesome pancakes. Pancakes so good you could eat them on the ceiling and flip them off the wall. And I was also looking for something different. Because of its origins (and because it makes more sense), this recipe uses metric measurements. But, I know for a fact that you all have a scale in your house somewhere, so clean it off (or don't) and use it because it really will make a huge difference!

Ingredients:

Directions:

170g Honey

Mix all of the ingredients together except the sour cream and the 4-8oz maple syrup. Let the ingredients rest for a few while you make your sour cream/maple syrup mixture. You may even have an extra minute for a rainstick solo. Mix your sour cream with 4oz maple syrup to start, make sure it's incorporated well and taste it. You might want more, use your judgment here.

445g AP Flour 100g Brown Sugar 2 tsp Baking Powder 3 ea Eggs 650ml Buttermilk ¼ tsp Salt 1 tsp Vanilla 1 pt Sour Cream 4-8 oz VT Maple Syrup

Next, get your NON-STICK pan (yes, the slippery grey one) on medium heat and spray it with some pan spray. You can use butter but unless you clarify it, it's just going to burn and you're going to need an awful lot of it. Place a ladle full of the batter in the pan and make sure to swirl it around to get all edges of the pan covered. Big thin pancakes are the goal here, to represent the cake a little bit. After you've made about 726 of these bad bois make some stacks and then drizzle your sour cream mixture and some honey over them. It you want to make it extra heady you can spinkle some Bee pollen on them as well. After a stack of these you'll be ready to fall asleep in a bamboo tree.

Keeping our Horizons Bright: The Legacy of Goedde Sound & Light with Paula J Meyer

How will we be remembered? What do we want to be known for? Be it a bloodline, a tradition, a business, or simply aligning with a purpose that stirs our soul, humans have an innate desire to leave their mark on this world.

As a follow up to our interview with her daughter Marta, we talked with Paula J Meyer — philanthropist, 10 year national triathlete, co-owner of GSL, and founder of the #InspireLegacy movement — about the origins of her family’s legacy. Paula was born in New Albany, Indiana with one older sister.

“We moved to the Indianapolis Suburb of Greenwood, IN. My father was a real estate developer and investor. We lived on a horse farm and my family raised Arabian horses as a hobby.”

It was important to Paula’s parents that she and her sister were encouraged to pursue their interests. “My sister’s #1 gift was voice and theater. I too loved voice and theater, but since I was younger, I decided to focus mainly on athletics and then music to avoid any sibling rivalry. I made Varsity Volleyball my first try-out, I was Treasurer of my class all four years, and the President of the school my senior year."

Paula’s legacy lives on at her high school where her impact was a lasting one. “My school did not have a pool, so I had to pursue my swimming at the Baxter YMCA. My platform as the President of my school was to drown-proof our community. My cabinet helped me solicit petitions to present to the School Board to build a pool at our High School. We accomplished my goal of building a pool!” During her 44 year tenure as a swimming coach, she made certain one of her meets was against her alma mater at the pool she was responsible for building.

Paula spent a lot of time in and on the water growing up. “My parents loved boating, and we had two boats on Lake Monroe in Bloomington, IN. We spent our summer weekends on our houseboat and ski boat.

During the winters, we were in the Fort Myers, FL area where my parents owned a second home and Jefferson Yacht. My parents were non-resident members of Useppa Island, a barrier island West of Pine Island and North of Captiva Island. As a family, we spent many years on Useppa Island living on the Jefferson at the island’s marina. When my parents passed away, I purchased a home to carry out their legacy.

This is when I began the #InspireLegacy movement.”

Paula named her cottage on Useppa ‘Inspire Legacy’ in honor of her late parents. She founded the movement to promote families to instill and carry-on family traditions. “My parents blessed our family with so many traditions. I had such a wonderful childhood!

My only hope was to create the same for my children… One of our #InspireLegacy traditions is to go out to Useppa Island the week of Thanksgiving via a yacht to celebrate both of my parents who died in the same week in 2015. My dad’s birthday was November 27th, and every year he flew the entire family down to do this trip.”

Music has also been a big part of the MeyerGoedde traditions. “Dad always had front row tickets for us to see so many great artists, so following the Pizza in the Park Festival, I took the children to see the Broadway musical Beautiful, the Story of Carole King — one of my all-time favorites. It truly is a beautiful story. We all CRIED….King is the epitome of one of the greatest artists.”

Paula always encouraged her children to pursue their interests, just as her parents did for her and her sister.

“As a Junior Board member of the Indianapolis Symphony, I helped with the Symphony Petting Zoo. I would take the children with me, often. The girls fell in love with the violin. My neighbor from Germany taught violin, so it was very easy for them to take lessons. They started when they were three and five years old. When Andrew was old enough, he picked up the drums! I started a garage band for the neighborhood… My father loved finding instruments to add in. He grew up playing the E Flat Saxophone!”

Little did she know Paula was fostering the infancy of what would evolve into Goedde Sound and Light. “Eventually, as the children grew older, Marta picked up guitar and voice.

Andrew and Marta decided to build a recording studio in one of our walk-in closets.

They placed a camera and microphone to communicate out to Andrew’s recording console. We recorded many high school artists.”

Phase one of business began in 2017-2018 when Andrew and Marta were in college.

“Andrew came to me and asked if I could buy some speakers and wash lights to help out the artists who we previously recorded and were still performing. I agreed, and it took off from there.”

Andrew and Marta put together a business plan and they moved to phase two. “We established our name as Goedde Productions, LLC and later created DBA (doing business as) Goedde Sound and Light, LLC. I have been the sole investor throughout.” Business insider tip: A DBA is essentially an alias that aids branding. It helps consumers understand exactly what services are provided and what the business wants to be known for. In this instance, it’s epic sound and light.

Now that they were official, Paula sent Andrew to Denver to study under Luke Stratton, former Lighting Director for Dopapod. Luke is the artist who developed the lighting board and is highly regarded in the jam scene. Having Luke as a mentor was a game changer for the growth of the business.

Phase three began when GSL began streaming during the pandemic. “We had already been doing video and drone video.

This is Marta’s expertise. During the pandemic, the three of us met to use the pandemic to strategize. On March 3, 2020, I texted Marta and Andrew, ‘We need to start using drive-in theaters to run concerts.’ They had no clue what a drive-in was! They thought I was crazy. I contacted Goose and suggested the same. At the end of the day, GSL and Goose all made money using Drive-in theaters!”

In October 2021, phase four began with the addition of logistics. “Andrew and Marta came to me about the problems Goose was having leasing trucks to get their equipment around. We researched buying a box truck.

We created another business plan and decided we could break even in less than two years. So, I purchased a 26’ Mack Truck.

It is in its own company called MG Legacy Group. MG stands for Meyer and Goedde.”

The Meyer-Goedde family built this business, their legacy, from the ground up. Now Paula works hard to continue to foster and protect it.

“I have shared my many years of business management to guide and advise Marta and Andrew. I also handle legal, insurance, and provide the financial capital for the company.

The company is set up in my trust and divided equally amongst the three children.

Marta and Andrew have been contributing equity each month. Marta handles the business management and Andrew handles equipment management for GSL.” Paula has masterfully balanced her role as mom and co-owner of a business with her children.

“I grew up with parents who had a business together, so I am so proud that my children and I are working together. I have pointed out to them they wear two hats. Their GSL hat and their Sibling hat! There is a fine line in-between.”

Now Paula gets to share the legacy with her grandchildren! “I have so many amazing memories from many shows. Each summer, I bring my oldest daughter and my grandchildren to Legend Valley. They live in Delaware just north of Columbus. My grandson, Vincent, who will be four on May 1st, absolutely LOVES Goose. The band has been so sweet to Vincent when he visits Legend Valley. I sincerely appreciate their kindness for Vincent. At the age of two, Vincent learned each of their names and what instrument they played. He and I love to watch the streams together. When I visit, he always says, Grandma let’s watch the Goose band!”

Her granddaughter, Anastasia, who will turn two in March, loves music too. Paula can’t wait to introduce her youngest grandchild, two month old John, to the music scene.

A Spark of Light The el Goose Times interview with

by Jon Caruso Art plays a critical role in establishing the visual identity of a band and the community that surrounds them. Like a spark of light, fine art can inspire and unite people from diverse backgrounds. The Goose community has no shortage of amazing artists and in this issue, The el Goose Times had the opportunity to speak with Mark and Liz from Twin Flame Designs Co. – creators of iconic fan-art pins inspired by “A Western Sun,” “Factory Fiction” and more: Have you always had a strong connection and appreciation for art?

Absolutely yes! I was fortunate growing up that my parents enrolled me in a school that cherished and valued the arts over traditional curriculums. I was exposed to all kinds of mediums, from wood working to embroidery to pastels and oil paints, all at a very young age, and was always encouraged to express myself creatively. As I’ve gotten older, I’ve been endlessly inspired by other people's art, but I never had the courage to get vulnerable and put myself and my artwork out there. Mark gave me the encouragement I needed, and the reception has been truly amazing.

What does art mean to you?

Art is self expression, it’s beauty, it’s making you think about the world in a different way and hopefully making you feel differently too. The process of making art is such a powerful healer as well. For me it’s often an opportunity to disconnect and de-stress and just get into a state of flow.

Art brings people together, and nothing demonstrates that more than music - which has always been a strong current through both of our lives. We are so grateful for everything that the music scene has given us, and we just hope to give something back. For Mark, gifting pins at shows was always a way to connect deeper to the music and the community, so spreading our art is our way of sharing our love and gratitude.

Tell us the story of how Twin Flame Designs came to be.

The Twin Flames ourselves, (Mark and Liz) first came to be through music — we met at a Twiddle show at the Brooklyn Bowl in 2015. The ‘Designs’ piece came in 2017.

Mark has always been a huge collector of pins, and he shared his passion with me. On a road trip one day, we were listening to Pigeons Playing Ping Pong and we just started brainstorming visuals based on the lyrics we were hearing. I sketched up our favorite idea, and Mark connected us with a pinmaker friend, Victor Guarneri, so we could learn how to produce them.

Our first pin was “Live It Up” - which ended up being a band official. We hold that one close to our hearts since it was such a learning experience! Now, whenever either of us hear an interesting lyric, it turns into a brainstorm.

Out of all of the art you’ve created thus far, what are some of your favorite pieces?

Aside from "Live It Up" - I’d have to say "Western Sun," because it was such a pure creative experience from start to finish — the design just poured out. Mark and I had gone to see Tom Marshall’s live podcast with Rick, Peter, and Jeff, and upon hearing the haunting beauty of that song for the first time, I literally felt the pull to create - the imagery blooming in my mind almost simultaneously as I listened. By the time the physical pin arrived it was the start of the pandemic lockdown, and it took on a whole new level of meaning. The reception to the design was amazingly positive, and it became a true point of connection to a group of people and a lifestyle that we missed so dearly.

With every design we always try to take risks and push the boundaries on production, incorporating stained glass and 3D, and as much detail as we possibly can. So some of our other favorite designs have been ones where we get butterflies opening up the box only to find out that it looks even better than we imagined! The Kitchen Dwellers “Ghost in a Bottle” pin definitely comes to mind.

How did you first hear about Goose? What draws you to the band and their music?

Our first time hearing them was in CT, it was early 2017 and they were playing the ‘unofficial Twiddle after-show’ at a tiny bar. It was a super fun night, but we had no idea what a spectacular takeoff these guys would have. A couple years later, we were at a Dead and Co show with our friends Billie and Kelly, and they insisted we make it our top priority to get into Goose. We caught their set at the Peach Grove stage, followed that up by hitting the Mercury lounge NYC Halloween show, and the rest is history.

As for the music it’s difficult to put into words how moving and how much of an ‘experience’ it can be. It taps into such a range of energy states, from all out dance party, to blissful self-reflection, and everything in between. We’re here for all of it.

And we always love a surprising cover! Then there’s the sheer creativity of the band that takes it to a whole other level. Beyond the set list and the lights, their shows are so conceptual. They always give you exactly what you need.

During the Pandemic, at a time when everyone craved connection, they delivered such an intimate feeling with the Orebolo Solarium and Live from Out There shows. Then Bingo tour was just a brilliant concept and some of our brightest memories from that time! We’re continuously impressed with how they push the boundaries of what a musical experience can be.

What was it like collaborating with the band on an official pin?

When Dave Dicianni reached out about it, we were instantly excited, honored, and a little intimidated to be honest! The band has such a thoughtful and curated visual identity and their merch is always on point. Sometimes bands have specific songs they want to highlight, but in this case the brief was wide open. So we got to sketching and sent several concepts over for them to review. They chose the ‘Goose Rose’ design and we versioned it out to color - thinking one variant would be a fun homage to pull from the OG Logo pin. It’s such a thrill to be able to help support these incredible musicians in our own small way!

What’s next for you? If our readers would like to learn more about and support your art, where’s the best place they should go?

We’re working on striking a healthy balance between our careers and our passion for art and music. Whenever we have time we continue to make pins for our favorite bands and we love to be able to help support them in this way. We feel incredibly fortunate that we’ve been able to work with bands like Goose. What started as just a fun creative outlet and passion project for us has now brought us so much closer to others in the jam community. It’s so special to run into people at shows and festivals who have been collecting our pins all this time, and we’re eternally grateful for the friendships that have developed through our art.

726 It is so easy to walk carefully on the surface of our lives, never going too deeply into the dark corners where the truth is waiting. Until that is, you are face to face with the thing that shows you how much you’ve been avoiding.

The heat from outside called with the promise of early summer breezes. Tonight was a chance to detour the confusing, circular path that life had become, and she was ready for it. Looking forward to this for months, she had no idea that this one evening would send her in another direction entirely, even if just in her own heart.

Squinting into the windshield on the way downtown, the playlist did its thing.

“Summer’s up in a haze,” she thought, already wishing for cooler weather. It was all so very…June.

I’ve been holding on to the weight of these decisions a little too tight, she knew. At some point it would be time to figure things out. For now, it was the time to be with her friends, some of whom were already on the other side of a very familiar door that held so many good memories.

The music started, and it was like going back in time (her favorite pastime).

Opener. Headliner. Dance. A little water to cool down. As it all ended, the simplest hello. It almost knocked her over. Struggling to make sense of the charge that had just been transferred, her usual happy numbness was replaced by something completely surprising. It had been lifetimes ago that she had felt such an instant connection to another person.

“And I am,” she thought immediately, trying to understand what had just happened, “swimming up on a tide” of something new and hard to grasp.

I should walk away, should stop this … whatever this is, she says over and over.

But I don’t want to. And all of a sudden, she can understand why people find themselves in precarious situations. She feels guilty, weak, elated, and sad with every pressing moment.

So she makes the quips and little by little, shares who she is; every time knowing that she’s getting in deeper. The connections tumble out of thin air, too many to count, and she feels powerless to look away. “The worst part of all of this is knowing it's on me,” her head says in the more honest moments.

“Well, I’m tired of waiting,” her heart responds back. “It’s already taken a little too long to get back up from these last few years.”

Back and forth it goes. She manages to keep all of this to herself. And day by day the feeling seems to grow until it’s not a question any longer. He says it first. “So show me the way in,” he’s asking, making the feelings both of them have clear.

It’s breaking her heart, because he’s the only one saying the words they both know are true. She frets with every response; knowing it would be so easy to say, “me too.” It is painful not to respond back with everything she has.

“I know that it's blatant, lord.” This has gone on too long. Something is going to happen that can’t be taken back. Already missing the memories of what could have been, she halfheartedly turns away.

“We all just need a little direction sometimes,” she thinks, wishing she had one right now.

“So,” she asks of herself, “hold out my wholeness so that I can think clearly, like a diamond eye in the cold, cold water.”

Her dreams are always the same; the places she loves from her earliest memories. Never showing us alone; we’ll go someday, she thinks, knowing it's less and less likely. But, maybe life is taking her back to where she started; to where I’ve known us all along. They both come from the same time, the same place, but have only circled the air above each other. Until now.

In the cold, cold water, she looks at her reflection for answers, and as always, sees the same image.

It’s never showing us too far, far from home.

She could sense it, though. Maybe somebody is waiting, and the truth is that she has been waiting, too. To feel this way. She has no words for it, but as the conversation continued, this flash of time, she became a different version of herself.

“I have been getting by,” she thought, “and I am so tired and laden pretending everything is OK.” At that moment she was starting to realize the extent of the walls that had been built over the years so that she could keep going. Those walls had blocked in so much, and kept so much of herself out. But there it was; this heat making those waves between them. Could anyone else feel it, or was it just her?

And just like that, the moment was over. Her feet on the pavement wanted to go back to him, but she moved toward home. As someone known for doing the right thing, all of this felt like it was happening to someone else. She tries not to think about what it could mean.

In the morning, she wonders if she has found some other haven in this person, and how that could even be possible. She can barely face it. Thoughts keep emerging, one by one; this has never happened to her before, and she is completely unprepared.

And then she hears the whistle from next to her. Another hello, an invitation, so kind. He has no idea of the complexities. The vines are growing up the walls, trying to reach her. It is everything she was hoping for, and dreading, at the same time.

“How can I acknowledge this?” her mind keeps asking. “No. I simply can’t,” no matter what she may be feeling. So she sits most of the day, hid out and shaking.

“Lord, what is happening to me?”

She’s convinced herself that saying no is the right way, the only way. She hates herself for it, both the decline of acceptance, and the overwhelming desire to do just that. The next months pass with no resolution. She is embroiled in a personal battle that no one else knows. At the same moment, acknowledging to herself that something massive has taken hold, and berating herself for even daring to think it.

She’s trying. An inner resolution. But she’s not herself and hasn’t been in awhile.

“Well, I’m gonna be back someday,” she says. But….what if this is something real?

Cause no one’s holding these hands tied up on me, she knows. She is free to make big decisions - to be honest. But she holds back; fearful to say certain things even to herself. That these years of building a life could be over, have been over.

And all I’ve caught of a soul is this beautiful person who visits me in small and lovely ways.

It’s actually really great until I remember that I have the exact same sense of humor as my dad and then I die a little inside.

What does Ben like on his baked potatoes?

He’s gotten much more adventurous with his potatoes since he was in high school. The classic was butter (both inside the potato and underneath the skin) and a generous topping of shredded mozzarella - all preceded by a lactaid (we love Ashkenazi Jewish stomach genes).

What would be your and Michael's picks for most and least likely Goose songs to play at your wedding?

I’ll be the queen so the most likely would have to be Empress. As much as I love "Madhuvan," I’m bitter that it’s the reason I lost our JOTY bet this year and have to buy Michael dinner, so we’d have to leave that one out.

Michael says that his most likely is "Hot Tea" and he doesn’t know his least likely, so we’re going to say he seconds my answer.

CRYPTIC MYSTIC: A fortune teller picnic of satirical horoscopes Written by: Lisa Governa Whether you’re a skeptic waving a pitchfork at witches or a crystal kid charging your root chakra in the sun with Bruce Robinson, nobody knows the future (except for Futureman Trevor Weekz) and the unknown is damn interesting. Hence why humans as far back as the Babylonians 2500 years ago have been trying anything to predict the future — even mapping the positions of the stars in the sky.

In the incredible book Autobiography of a Yogi, Paramahansa Yogananda provides my favorite definition of astrology: “Astrology is the study of a man’s response to planetary stimuli. The stars have no conscious benevolence or animosity; they merely send forth positive and negative radiations.” So take it with a grain of salt and throw it over your shoulder, this is what you might (or might not) expect over the next three months.

Through March and April, Jupiter and Chiron come together in Aries. Let’s break that down. Jupiter is awesome. Known as the Guru, it brings all the good juju — luck, wisdom, optimism, and blessings. Chiron was a centaur in Greek mythology known as the wounded healer. This poor guy could fix everyone but himself. Together, Jupiter and Chiron amplify healing energy. This is great news for Goose tour! Use this time to rid yourself of negativity and battle personal demons. “Dark he fights, won’t let the night steal our soul!”

Jupiter forms a square to Pluto in May. This means our pal Jupiter will be clashing with Pluto aka Hades aka ruler of Scorpio and representative of our subconscious. Yikes. You will be challenged, but don’t let a heavy one hold back the dawn in you! Manage this energy productively by compromising. Allow the adversity to make you stronger rather than frustrated. Don’t fall victim to narrow mindedness! This is not a good time to force your beliefs onto others. Be open to things like the studio version of "Arrow." You might actually like it.

Aries 3/21-4/20 Finally, it’s all about you. Just how you like it! This healing magic is happening in your sign. Use this tour to overcome your mental and physical issues. You don’t care if you’re meeting other people’s expectations because you answer to yourself. Connect to your truth and live it!

Beware of Dr. Darkness creeping in… you can be obsessive at times. Don’t overdo it socially. Take a step back and maybe don’t buy tickets to the entire tour. Your mind (and your wallet) will thank you.
