A Look Back: The Evolution of As we celebrate our tenth volume, our team thought it would be fun to take a look back at the history of this special publication, reflect on how it began and highlight some of the major milestones that we've had (so far).

November 2020 The el Goose Times concept has evolved significantly over a short period of time. This publication's name was inspired by the Facebook group, "el Goose".

It was initially called The el Goose Times because it was a satirical summary of the "hot topics" in the Facebook group each week regarding the band. At this time, it was a one-man operation by our now TEDitor-in-Chief, Jon Caruso.

May 2021 The el Goose Times Volume One debuted in May 2021 during the short Spring tour run, which began on May 3rd 2021 in Frederick, Maryland and ended in Pelham, Tennessee.

Since our team didn't have a printer at this point in time, we utilized local Staples printing facilities around each venue. This volume was printed on a single 17"x11" sheet of paper, doublesided, folded and primarily in black & white (outside of 100 color copies that were numbered).

The first issue included an interview from Andrew Goedde, a show review from Ryan Storm, a Ted the Goose cartoon & more.

February 2021 Ted the Goose made his first appearance on February 9, 2021 in "Goose Doodles #1" of this version of The el Goose Times.

His name was inspired by the Ted Tapes and the word "Ted" itself has circulated throughout circles of friends in the Wilton community.

April 2021 Like Nick Fury from Marvel's The Avengers, Jon brought together a team of Goose fans to create the first volume of The el Goose Times. Our OG team included Marc Komito, Ryan Storm, Rick Gallego, Joe Joseph, Ky Cousin, Russo, Paige Caruso and more. Our goal was to create a "lot rag" surrounding the band and community; inspired by fanzines that we loved and grew up with, including Dupree's Diamond News and Surrender to the Flow.

June 2021 Shortly thereafter, The el Goose Times team continued to grow with the addition of the amazing Lisa Governa. Following feedback from Volume One, our team invested in a new computer program for layouts and researched potential printing partners.

The one we ultimately chose is the one we still use today. From this volume onward, we shifted away from a traditional printer paper to glossy paper. In addition, this new printer allowed for full-color at no additional cost. The el Goose Times Volume Two debuted on June 11th 2021 in Swanzey, New Hampshire. This issue featured an interview with Coach and included a host of few features, with the debut of our el Goose Chicks section and Hot Tea in Rick's Kitchen (Goose-inspired recipes).

Summer & Fall 2021 Our team continued to evolve to suit the needs of the magazine, with new full-time members like Andrew DaRosa and Jack Quinn, occasional (satellite) contributors, as well as some who moved on amicably (as the EGT has always been 100% volunteer-based).

The el Goose Times continued to evolve over the remainder of 2021, developing volumes in support of Goose's first festival, FRED the Festival and their Fall tour. Interviews included Matt Campbell, Mo Mitarotonda and Sam Bardani. Front cover artwork was added to feature artists within our community and add to the magazine feel.

April 2022 Subscription Service

The el Goose Times launched a subscription service, which allowed for readers to have their volumes mailed directly to them on a subscription-basis.

Summer & Fall 2022 Volumes Six and Seven featured a multi-column format that made it easier to read and mirror other magazine format styles that have traditionally worked well.

Amanda Cad, Sparkman Clark and Mikah Atkind all joined our extended team during this time - all bringing fresh new ideas.

The Fall issue featured debuts of three new subsections: Calling for the Rhythm, Beside the Fire's Glow and Long-Time Listener, First-Time Caller.

May-June 2022 The el Goose Times Volume Five continued to push the envelope and featured the debut of the solid orange border (thanks to our friend and cover artist Knot Pollock), an interview with Jeff Engborg and Rita Caruso, as well as the debut of It Burns Within from our (then new) teammate Tamara Sastow, as well as a "Where's Waldo?" inspired centerfold artwork by frequent collaborator and friend Marc Chiavon.

A signed copy of this volume (signed in-between the two Radio City shows in New York that June) sold for $726 and all proceeds went to charity.

Fall/Winter 2022

Winter 2022 With the announcement of the Trey Anastasio Band & Goose tour, Jon reached out to Christy Articola of Surrender to the Flow for a one-time collaboration volume - the result was a truly unique experiment and unprecedented, with two cover artists and almost 40 people contributing to this volume which celebrated the greater Phish and Goose communities equally. This volume featured interviews from Trevor Weekz and James Casey.

Summer 2023 Our team continues to expand with Garrett Dorfman and Sara Tonin joining our family. Our Summer edition continued to build upon the success of Volume Eight, featuing an interview with Greg DeLuis (of DeLuis guitars), an el Goose Chicks interview with Sam Wray and more, with cover art by Mister Dude.

Rebecca Jane Lee designs a new logo and "newsie goose" artwork for the publication (in a collaboration with Jon and team), helping pave the way for the next evolution of The el Goose Times.

Spring 2023 Our continued success and ongoing support from the band and community brought a truly unique special edition to celebrate the Capitol Theatre run, in addition to one of our most fully-realized issues yet, Volume Eight.

The Capitol Theatre special edition featured an interview with legendary photographer Jay Blakesberg, a brief history about the historic venue and a flipbook image of Ted the Goose.

Volume Eight featured interviews with Peter Anspach, Twin Flame Designs and Paula Meyer, in addition to venue recommendations, a new horoscope section and more.

Our team is so grateful for the love and support we've received from this community over the last two years - without you, none of this would be possible. A Short History of “El Göose” with Guest Writer & El Göose Administrator Bruce Robinson There has never been a better time during the midst of an avian uprising to learn the fascinating history of the EGT namesake, El Göose! This short history will attempt to avail you of the deep roots behind the infamous online group that spawned the tremendously popular periodical you’re reading right now, but it may ultimately fail in that attempt. I accept no responsibility in that case. My recommendation would be to blame the TEDitor-in-Chief for allowing this piece to make it to publication…or, maybe you could post your complaints on El Göose? Just a thought… …anyway, let’s dig into the good stuff.

Mostly by happenstance, the Facebook group “El Göose” has become one of the largest hubs for social interaction among fans of the burgeoning Indie-Americana Folk-Funk band Goose over the last five years. However, El Göose wasn’t the main hub for friends and fans of the band during the initial tenure of the band’s precedent outfit, Vasudo. At that time, many of their supporters were part of an extensive network of music lovers that grew organically from a small base of “local degens” (colloquially speaking) in Wilton, CT, who jokingly referred to themselves as “Team Blozz” or “TB,” for short. It’s probably worth noting that TB is NOT in reference to tuberculosis in case that less-than-fortunate presumption is still lingering in the collective consciousness of the fanbase.

The linchpin of Team Blozz – both the physical group of people and the private group on Facebook – was Jon “Coach” Lombardi. He created the Facebook group years after the name had stuck in reference to our generation-spanning circle of friends who regularly went to see live shows together, and who were closely connected by their sense of humor, taste for “perceptive accouterments,” and unabashed, unbridled love for bands like The Grateful Dead, Phish, Widespread Panic, and countless other jam-scene giants.

Throughout high school, college, and beyond, Coach would periodically add friends of friends to TB with whom he had seen at least one show with. Over time, the formerly close-knit group became relatively large in number, but inextricably connected emotionally. So many of my most cherished relationships exist as a bi-product of connections forged through TB, and I cannot overstate how lucky and grateful I am for having been part of that group.

Inevitably, word spread through our wide circle of close friends about Vasudo and ultimately, Goose. After the band started playing shows as Goose, Jon created “Goose Group,” which was basically TB with a focus on Goose. Over time, Goose Group became “Funky Flock,” but that name was quickly rescinded when we discovered that Pigeons Playing Ping Pong fans had already (accurately) used the same nomenclature for the title of their fan group.

Etymologically, Goose Group naturally transitioned to the now permanent title, “El Göose.” You may be thinking that this transition has no etymological basis whatsoever, and you’d be right in thinking that. You may be thinking that “El Göose” is a tongue-in-cheek reference to “The Phish,” or a loose reference to the “metal umlaut,” implemented first by Blue Öyster Cult and subsequently adopted by Motörhead, Mötley Crüe, Queensrÿche, and of course, Goose’s fan group. You may be thinking of other things too, but I’m not clairvoyant.

Regrettably, Goose never officially adopted the umlaut for the band name, but they’re not exactly metal, even if the Empress from SPAC gets pretty “gritty” by some standards.

Although the title, mission, and atmosphere of El Göose has evolved over the years, the goal of the group has remained the same: to provide a welcoming, informative, supportive landing page for fans to easily connect with one another and share their feelings about the band, their own creative endeavors and interests, and their passion for music and community. It hasn’t always been a perfect place for everyone, but the group mods continue to work to make it the best environment it can be for as many fans as possible. El Göose has grown into more than a niche message board for our friends – it’s become a corollary but altogether independent project that many have benefited from in ways that extend far beyond amusement, entertainment, or fandom. It’s also tremendously gratifying that the group has any connection at all – even by name alone – to monumental passion projects like The El Göose Times. Additionally, to be able to provide a place where friends and fans alike can forge their own relationships and memories like those that I cherish so much has made administration an unexpected, but extremely fulfilling enterprise that I hope I can continue to support in perpetuity.

Ideally, I hope I was able to provide some meaningful context to readers previously unfamiliar with the origins of El Göose. If I failed, well…the Facebook group is always open to continue the discussion.

Summer Summer 2023 Recap with Ryan Storm It was the Summer of Thatch…or something like that.

In reality, it was the summer of Goose – the band once again spent the early part of the season burning down a series of cities and venues, as their 2023 sound continues to expand.

Beginning with some one-off festival dates in late May and early June, the quintet quickly demonstrated that these would not be your run-of-the-mill festival experiences – Summer Camp’s “Thatch” and Cathead Jam’s “Tumble” are both excellent and memorable jams, with the latter featuring some truly unique and layered piano work from Peter. The second set of Cathead also boasted an impressive pairing of “Red Bird” and “In Your Eyes” – where drums were king. Wrapping up the quick jaunt with appearances in Chattanooga and Lexington where “Goocius” returned for the first time since last summer, the band headed into tour proper on a serious mission.

Beginning in Chicago on June 21st with a very interesting introduction from fan and comedian Bert Kreischer, this “intimate” show at the site of the 2021 New Year’s Eve concerts saw the band craft an astounding segue sandwich with “Elizabeth” -> “Caution” -> “Elizabeth” and absolutely blow the doors off the place with an all-killer, no-filler second set that had Peter’s arpeggiator everywhere.

Louisville has been a very important place for Goose dating back to their first-ever multi-night run in June 2018, so it was a fair assumption that these shows were going to be incredible. In just the third song of the first set on 6/22, the band delivered a “Borne” of the highest magnitude, somehow expanding on the majestic previous version in Eugene from April. Washes of textures and an infusion of klezmer vibes were all over this all-time version, whereas the second set’s “Arrow” stretched to nearly half an hour and began the stretch of the year where Jeff has really been showing off both his percussion chops and incredibly chemistry with Spuds. Louisville N2’s first set was highlighted by a NUCLEAR-level “All I Need” – one of the loudest crowd reactions to a jam in Goose history that is clearly audible on the recording. Rick’s incredible solo ventured into some “Hollywood Nights”-ish territory atop a bed of Peter’s synths and organ to higher and higher peaks. The emphasis on well-crafted upbeat jams continued in the second set’s “Red Bird,” where Trevor anchored a powerful space once again filled with layered Peter textures.

While a 90-minute appearance at an EDMbased festival like Electric Forest was expected to be a relatively skippable show, Goose opted instead to take up nearly a third of their allotted time with a sprawling “Madhuvan.” The darkness took over quickly for the first five minutes of the jam and the band seemed as though they were going to wrap up a concise 12 or 13-minute version of the song – but Rick found a new vein of inspiration and they exploded into a charging, hose-like space that saw Peter stick to guitar for longer than he has for a lot of this year. Continuing from there, the improv broke down into some funkier territory and eventually climbed its way back home.

I was fortunate enough to hold him with me as a walked the boys out on stage that night. For me, it’s just the small things, but that was everything for me – letting him check out the whole crowd and knowing what that vantage point looks like from the lawn or from the pavilion there at SPAC...it’s almost too surreal to even talk about – I have goosebumps, the hair is standing up on my head. For me, it was kind of a Simba moment, every one of Goedde’s lights that these hands touches, is all yours, you know, something like that (chuckles). It was beautiful, even my dog Greta was there...the whole family. I gave Bodie a kiss and went to work, because when the show starts, that’s what it is. To have shared that experience with them is just so incredible.

In our previous interview (Volume 2) with Marc Komito, one of my favorite quotes was: “Without love in the dream, it will never come true.” Reflecting back on this two years later, does this still hold true for you?

with Jon Caruso As we collectively grow older and time passes by (all too quickly), it's important to stop and reflect on those who have made an impact on us, no matter how big or small. It's through self-reflection within those quiet moments that we can rediscover lessons through their wisdom, remind us of our worth and inspire us to live to our fullest potential.

Role models can take on many different forms throughout our lives - for example: our mothers, fathers, teachers and yes, even coaches. John Wooden, considered one of the greatest basketball coaches of all time, once said that "A leader's most powerful ally is his or her own example (1)". Through love, our role models nurture, motivate and guide us, passing on their knowledge and advice. They're a guiding light as we venture out into the often-turbulent seas of life and chase our dreams.

Jon Lombardi, affectionately known as Coach, has been a huge role model and guiding light for Goose since their inception - in a way, he's like the equivalent of Master Splinter to the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. As we previously learned in Marc Komito's interview with Coach in Volume Two, he's worn many different hats throughout his time with the band, some of his very best friends who he considers family. Coach is also responsible for creating the very community we celebrate every issue through his genuine love, passion and hard work.

In honor of our tenth volume, it felt appropriate continuing our conversation with Coach, our second interview, as a lot has changed since May 2021. He recently became a father to an adorable boy, Bodie, with his wife Bonnie and his role in the band has evolved significantly since we last spoke.

Congratulations on becoming a father! As a father of three myself, fatherhood is a gift that keeps on giving.

What is it like being able to share these experiences with your wife and now, your son?

Thank you so much for the kind words and for having me today. Being a father is the best thing that has ever happened to me and the best thing I’ve ever done. It’s just incredible. My wife Bonnie and I have shared our love of music since we first met each other, watching our friends play. Bonnie was there the night Rick and I spoke until the sun came up about forming this band and has always supported the dream. She’s always understood it - being a fan of music and live music, knowing the journey that the people before us took to get to where they’re at. It’s been amazing to constantly have that support, as it’s allowed me to be able to do this – especially back in the day when we’re, you know, just in a van, a trailer and it’s just us.

Now, to be able to share with my son, Bodie, is amazing. Any parent will know that in the early days, sometimes you do whatever you can – I'll sing to my kid, talk to my kid. And for people who know me, I would talk to a tree if I was sat outside for a while - I’d just talk to it all night. (chuckles) My wife says I could talk somebody’s ear off.

On the nights he was a bit younger, I’d go through almost every story with him. My wife went into labor while we were driving from Pittsburgh to Virginia during the Taboose tour. I’ll never forget the whole story of being woken up, (and obviously, we knew he was coming) it was actually on his due date that she went into labor. So, unlike his mom and dad, he was a very punctual kid. Since that happened, during the birth we were playing Van Morrison, and the first thing he, as soon as he came out, “Borne” was on and he listened to his uncles play music. I’ve definitely been in his ear about everything, just telling him about life, because they just sit there and they listen. Now he babbles back, which is great. Sharing it is amazing and recently, he got to go to his first concert ever at SPAC. The place, as a Northeast person, I’ve seen over 100 concerts just going up there, because it's one of the greatest outdoor places to see music, I think, in the country. That was a very special show for the band and for all of us in the crew – and everyone, all of our fans. For me to be able to share that – not only with Bonnie, who has been there at the start: as an advocate, as a supporter, someone to bounce ideas to and someone who literally decorated the first few Goosemases by hand until the middle of the night - the nights leading up to it at Factory Underground.

That, without a doubt, holds true - in some parts, an ethos built in my body for everything: fatherhood, the band, life in general. Things get real and that love and the dreams that come from that love that you have – thinking about any passion or any hobby – it’s really what sees me through. I kind of live by it. It makes sense to me, at least.

As a “father figure” of Goose, how has your role in the band evolved over time?

What are some of your favorite tour stories and/or memories you've had thus far?

(Laughs) Oh man. There’s a lot of stories...how my role has evolved has really changed a lot in a cool and fortunate ways, since I’ve been here since we started this band. I’ve worn every hat there is – in terms of the production-side and the backside of things, in one form or another – between management, booking, promotion, lights, audio, backline and performing with my friends. How the role’s changed is so beautiful, in that its coincided with the growth of this band. I remember when the boys met Goedde and Marta at a show in Ohio I believe – they were working and I remember meeting them, saw how hard they worked and I was like, “That’s the guy.”

When the day came and we were able to add a crew member and it was Goedde, it was just phenomenal. I’ll never forget meeting them the first time, we picked them up on tour and I believe we were heading out from Buffalo to go to (if my foggy memory serves me correctly) Nebraska – Showmaha, Nebraska – to start I think it was nine shows over eleven days, opening up for Aqueous (one of my favorite bands, great people). The moment that we added a crew member, the dynamic started to change: I helped Goedde set up his lights and essentially became a light tech, learning more about lights myself from Andrew. He, in turn, helped out with backline as well and anything else we needed. We then added Sam Bardani and I believe his first show was 10/1/19 - Parish Public House, Albany. Our buddies Eggy opened for us (love them) and it was Sam’s first show as front of house. It was such a great feeling, as the band and I had talked about getting Sam, as he was a local legend in our area doing sound at FTC and local venues.

Going back to that quote, which is an actually a Jerry Garcia quote (I can’t take credit), with my the ethos and the way I try to live, it’s nice to be around like-minded people – even if they’re not exactly the same.

Having those kind of values within Sam was huge for me. I remember him saying “Hey, is there anything I should know about the band? Any song subtleties?” I set merch up, right in front of front of house (back then, at a bar then it’s just like a little stand in the middle of the room). I knew he was good, he had a good ear and I was like, “You’re good, I’ll tell you what type of genre. All you gotta do is turn T up. OK?” (chuckles) He was real good at it man, and I’m telling you, setbreak of that show I was smiling ear to fuckin’ ear because I was like, “Man, it’s just coming together, we’re getting a crew, this kid is a great sound engineer, we have the best young light guy around working with us now that nobody knows about.” I felt so lucky and fortunate to be able to start having a crew and being in the van – it wasn’t just the band and me...it was the crew and the band. That was the start of the growth.

Danny and Marta were always around with Andrew, at some big shows they would just be there helping. Pizza in the Park in Stamford I believe, 2018, Marta and Paula Goedde (their mother, great woman – we love Moms here at Goose, so shout out to Paula – all the Goeddes really, shout out to them) were there. Marta was like, “What can I do?” and helping get video content. Paula’s running up and down I-95 to Lowes and Home Depot getting fans and tapes and stuff we could use, you know? So, they’ve been around and the natural progression as the band evolved and grew and more dreams were met...we step up and boys putting in the passion and dedication to do what they do every day in, day out, whether they’re on the road or not to hone their craft. To make that product y’all hear, they deserve more help. So when the time came to add help, it was great to have Marta Goedde and Danny McDonald come in, essentially just fitting the rest of our Indy family, essentially.

Since 2018, we also began working excellent photographers like Adam Berta, Chris Quinn and so many others - we're feel very fortunate for that. As we're learning and growing, we have a visual representation thanks to them (which is priceless) and there's so many other "boots on the ground" teammates that are key to our overall growth that I wish I could list them all. And at that point, it was amazing and it was like Bingo Tour, and then the Drive-Ins and that’s what we were rolling in. I’m not gonna lie, it felt good. It was a relief to have a full team and crew, so that we could all lean into our abilities and make the shows the best they can be with what we had.

As that crew grew, it made our productions better. Sam King coming along really is just humongous, because with everyone working their tails off, night and day, it’s essential – it's critical - for Sam King to be around and keep us all alive and do an amazing job of everyone’s day-to-day life and handling it all, she’s a great tour manager. Fast forward to where we are now with a full crew bus of people, with Eric Loomis, Pete Spadaro is our lighting crew chief. We have a full video team now, which is great. We added Jess to the mix and she is just phenomenal, working with guys from Gateway who all work with the Phish video team. In addition, I'd be remiss not to mention our 11E1evenGroup management partners like Dave DiCianni and Ben Baruch and PR extraordinaire Greg Knight.

It's an incredible feeling to have brothers and sisters to lean on and help out and learn from – because all of these people are so good at what they do in a production that we’re all learning from each other and to date myself, we’re kind of like Captain Planet – when all of the powers combine, we’re going to fuck shit up!

It’s amazing because we’re all doing it together with that same love and the dream for all of this, it’s all we’ve wanted to do – some of us knew it, some of us didn’t. I can’t wait to see where it goes and I really feel confident going in with this crew. There’s always time to learn, but that confidence from knowing the group of people I’m with, because they’re all very badass.

What are some of the biggest lessons you’ve learned while on the road?

There are so many lessons you learn on the road! Starting from back in the day, sometimes you could miss a gig, miss a soundcheck...one time on I-95, somehow a hammer just fell out of someone’s truck and we were like, “Whoa is that gonna -” (Whack!) Right into the windshield.

When it really breaks down to it, I’m pretty sure big Steve Parish (legend) said in Scorcese’s Dead documentary, “It can go from Jerry being the boss to the truck being the boss” - and its true. I mean, when you’re on the road, you want to make sure you account for traffic, the van, incoming weather and most importantly, the van or trailer. In addition, you want to be there for load in and soundcheck - you want to be early to be able to stretch your legs, say hi to the promoter and the band you’re opening for. These are all things you learn when you start out.

Fast forward to some most recent lessons, I know most recently when we got to work this Taboose tour, it was unbelievably incredible for a multitude of reasons. The biggest thing I took away was knowledge in what they do, while watching the best of the best do what they do.

Photo Credit: Adam Berta Photography During the shows, being able to go in and co-direct with Trey and see how their team operate - just hear, listen and do what my Dad was telling me years ago at the construction site: “Look around, check out what they’re doing, see how its done and listen to the language - just absorb stuff like a sponge.” Given our most primitive, early learning situations in van times and how to get to shows ontime, how to book shows and all that stuff to fast forward, how to really be the best at what you do in the highest caliber-level of professionalism was all taught to us during that Taboose tour, and it was amazing.

Going back to the question of my son being born that tour, when I knew my wife was pregnant and also knew the tour was happening, both beautiful, amazing things – you could even say, “the best things that have ever happened to me in my life, all at one time.” Very very close together, because the tour actually coincided with my wife’s due date and I’m like “alright, well...” And going back to Bonnie’s great, undying support, she was like, “Okay, well, you know, it’s a long pregnancy, you’re here with me a lot of the time.” You go to work, do your thing and fortunately, you get back, so I was able to get back while being on that tour.

Tell us the story behind the rainstick: when did that start and where did that idea come from?

Whose idea was it to have you use it during songs like “Honeybee”? I love the vibe it brings to the song.

(Laughs) You had to do it, didn’t you?

Oh, you’re funny.

It’s a burning question in the community!

(Laughs) So important, right? Let’s see...I don’t know what year, but Ben lived with my wife and I (Spuds) for a few years and one night, he had to get some sticks – maybe some drumheads, I don’t know – we had to ride to Guitar Center in Danbury, Connecticut. We’re in there, he’s checking stuff out, we’re messing around with stuff. Long story short, that day I walked out of there with some percussion gear and one of the things was like “oh man, a rainstick, this is hilarious, we should – I should get this, why not?”

I really don’t know what exactly happened but I know at one point, I brought it with us, “We could do something funny." The first time it was ever used, I believe, was Steamboat Springs.

Photo Credit: Adam Berta Photography We did a two-night run there – shoutout to the Old Town Pub, Sean Regean, his wife and his kid, absolutely just, one of the best people in the world – but anyway, we had a good time that twonight run. It was fun, it was snowing, it was a good time and I think we did a “IUB” jam and “IZ U”, which is a like some sort of ambient jam. We brought out the rainstick and Trevor and I were like saying some inside jokes into the mic - “IUB” or “I IZ” or “IZ U.” I think we had an idea the night before, just kind of hanging out late, goofing around being like, “let’s do something kind of out there.” And yeah, that happened and it was fun – it was pretty “B” as friends would put it, but it was fun, it’s always cool to get up there with them.

The stick would be with us and I think random times, we would do stuff like that. Fast forward, I don’t know if was a rehearsal or a show or what it was, but Peter walked up to me and was like, “Hey man, I got a part for the stick,” in this epic, positive smiley Peter way that's always in his demeanor.

And I was like, “For what, the rain stick? What do you mean?” And he goes, “Yeah, the intro to "Honeybee," let me show you – it'll be sweet!”

And I was like, “Okay.” (chuckles) It just has kind of been a thing since then, I don’t know. With Broadcast and directing, sometimes I don’t wanna get up from my area and world of what I’m doing when I’m into it, but I’ll get on the crew talkbacks, like Bardani one time was like, “Where the hell is the stick?” And I was like, “Oh, shit!” It’s kind of an inside joke between the guys, something that happened naturally.

Walk our readers through a regular tour day looks like for you and your crew. In terms of preparation, setup and whatever else.

Going back to that question of our crew expanding, fortunately, we have specialized departments now, instead of each one of us doing four to six things at a time. It’s more of a tightly ran ship with a much of shipmates, people working – which is nice.

But, if we’re going to like an ideal festival day, I’ll help out with that still because there’s still our changeover times, which is all hands on-deck for a festival. A typical day, especially on a festival day, for us is – and with a festival, when you play last or one of the headliners, you load-in first.

So, we’re talking about 6am-6:30am off the bus, we’re cracking trailers and usually our stage manager Padge is directing people on where to bring what cases, local hands that are helping us out. Stuff will come out, lighting is first and then back line (which is music gear).

Video is in there as well and then as everything’s come off the truck, people kind of make sure to put things in their right places – downstage left, upstage right, centerstage. As we go, it’s definitely a methodical, long ballet dance: the art of load-in, through the show and the load-out. Cases get put out where they need to go, lighting gets up and moves certain cases. Back line comes out, you see risers get built for the drummers and start coming together with Padge and Harry Reece. You’ll see Marta getting Peter’s world together, as well as Rick’s and Trevor’s, with the help of Padge.

I’ll be helping Marta on festival days with Peter’s gear – which is something for a long-time I did on my own, now she does – but on festival days, I give her a hand with that because it’s all hands on-deck. And then we’ll have Jess getting video world set up, usually we’re stage left near monitor world (near Sam Bardani) and we set up our video world, which is several cases – between the director’s bridge, the rowbow bridge (which is where our moving cameras, our robotic cameras are positioned and Marta works during the show. Engineering stations are on that as well, which Jess works during the show.

As we move on through load-in towards line check, which is just before soundcheck, you’ll see everything be built. At that point, Peter's world will be almost fully done and the drums will be up. Marta, Jess and myself will make sure cameras get up into the right position and our world is all set up (our cameras, recording, everything is calibrated where we need to go).

Danny will hop off of doing light stuff once that’s finally done, because Danny and Pete do that as well. He’ll make sure his camera’s up and running but soundcheck (ideally). We like to be all set up in video world and doing a little bit of a check of our own as the boys do their soundcheck, which happens after line check.

It’s quick on a festival day. Then we make sure that we mark our places of where everything is because on a festival day, after that soundcheck – boom, we roll everything off and the stage is clear for the next guys.

We’ll come on back, we’ll have 3 or 5 hours to relax, and we’ll come back maybe 2 hours before our set and wait there. As soon as the last note hits from the band in front us hits, what’s called a “Changeover” happens and the other band gets off promptly – most festivals are great at doing that. Then we get everything that we built that morning back on stage, drums back in position, rugs done, Peter’s world back in-position.

Where we last left off, usually around 9:30-10am, sometimes noon, and this could be anywhere from 10-12 hours later at a festival, we do a line check again, make sure the audio is working and we’ll make sure we’re good to go on the video end.

Then we hit a show, in which that time everyone is just knee-deep in their worlds. Particularly everyone in video world, so I have a headset on, I'm listening to the band and talking to Marta, who is usually to my right, operating robotic cameras.

I’m talking to Danny McDonald, who everyone sees, he’s on-stage and our gimbal operator, our moving camera operator. At times, I’m also talking to operators at front of house when we have long lenses, or operators in the pit when we have the opportunity to have pit cameras. Naveed has even one-time last Goosemas held a shoulder camera.

I’m talking to operators, it could be as many as six-plus people at a time and fortunately, I have the gift to gab and I know the music well. It’s something that kind of flows...some would say chaotically, some would say symbiotically, but you have to think two-three-four shots ahead of time.

In case anything going in color-matching wise, we can tell our engineer Jess and she can use the awesome tools we have, thanks to Gateway, to shade and engineer and do her job. We’re doing that during the show.

Setbreak, if any problems need to be fixed, we check them out –I'll go pop in and see the band, “How are you doing? Are you doing okay?” One of those. We do it all again set two and then we all break it down right after, the encore band walks off, broadcast ends and immediately we are- the trucks are already open and cases have been preset out to start putting stuff back in.

We pack the whole circus up in a specific way, which Goedde and Eric Loomis discuss and then in the trucks anywhere from 2 to 3 hours later. We get back on the buses and ride onto another city.

The next thing starts the next day, unless its an off day and we’re fortunate to catch our breaths a bit, working on production advances for future gigs. Next city, next night. It does beat having to drive with Trevor all night and have to it all all ourselves, it’s definitely a progression. It’s definitely a long day. Every moment is just kind of filled with stuff, to the point where you get to the point where you’re like, “It’s encore already? Oh shit! It’s almost time to load out.” Time flies past when you’re having fun and it definitely holds true over here.

How does the band approach milestone shows versus regular shows, in terms of setlists and production?

It’s definitely a bigger operation now and there’s a lot more people to talk to with a lot of great ideas to make milestone shows as special as possible.

This all starts from the top, so Ricky will always have a great idea, or think of something – it usually starts in bossman’s head and will kind of trickle out. We all step up to that idea – we take what we have in our departments and we step up.

Someone that’s very involved would be Goedde and Tony Caporale, taking an idea like Cincy New Years and then Will Thresher will take Ricky’s idea and do what they do creatively. Will Thresher is one of our dear friends, he’s our head creative in terms doing stuff, lot with video. He’s been around since the Vasudo days.

“Butter Rum” is about a Butter Rum muffin that he bought at some market in Mass and walked back to the house with it or something – I wasn’t around for it, but Will is OG, so when his vibes are around it’s great. Will, Tony and Goedde will take a boss idea from Ricky and try to put their end on it, so for Tony and Andrew it’s with lighting and projection and visuals and how we can kind of meet this idea. Will as well will help them with those graphics and what you saw up there, the video during the countdown and whatnot – and everyone else steps up. Videowise, for example, that was a show that I wanted some more cameras at, a bigger venue, and we were doing something cool, so we wanted to make the broadcast kind of meet that and do as much as we could within where we’re at now to get all this gear.

With a Red Rocks or SPAC, for example, we had, broadcast-wise to make it extra special, I thought bringing a flash camera, which is just another vantage point, a side-vantage point from the mezzanine. I thought it would be cool to show everybody back at home on the broadcast or those who had never been to SPAC like, “Wow, this is a beautiful, big inside pavilion. It’s not like any other typical shed.” It also provided another perspective of Goedde’s beautiful light rig and the boys from the side.

Approaching a milestone show, ideas will start from the top, from like a Ricky or Peter or management up there, and then go to lighting and then Will at Creative to see that aspect of it. Broadcast-wise, we’ll want to capture it a certain way and audiowise, Eric is very keen to knowing rooms, how they all are, and will bring in a sound system is best fitting for the boy’s sound in that room (especially for a milestone show). Everybody gets excited and wants to put out the very best product they possibly can for the guys and also for everybody out there in the stands and everybody out there at home. It’s all about the boys and the community.

As this band and community continues to grow, what are your biggest hopes and aspirations?

When we first started, when I went home after having that conversation with Rick and Trev and Bon was there that night as well, about how this is what we’re doing, we’re starting this band and it’s gonna be Goose. I had a little notepad and wrote a bunch of goals and aspirations in there.

Our first show ever was September 27th 2014 at Jimmy’s Seaside in Stamford, Connecticut (shouts to Jimmy’s). We’re coming up on ten years in a bit.

It’s very important that we all continue to put that pedal to the metal, or I guess as the young kids say, “All gas.” Keep grinding, everyone working as hard as they can, because we know that’s what the boys are doing up there. Production-wise, we’re all just trying to get better to make this the best it can possibly be, because in my opinion, what separates a generational talent (musically, me talking as a fan) and someone that can span multi-generations and do it for multiple generations, to double down even more and make sure all of the chips are in and give it everything we got. It’s year 10-20 that really defines a band and give it an identity. I know these guys have it in them and I’m excited, fortunate and grateful to be along for the ride and to work my tail off as well with my comrades and be part of the ride. Sixty years of music – keep this train rolling, all with the same love and passion that we’ve always had. Being true to ourselves. Fortunately, a lot of goals have been met, in this amount of time - I’m grateful for it. We’re just going to keep it at a macro-level and we want music going for a long time around here. The best is yet to come, which is exciting! Very Ted. What was it like hearing “Empress of Organos” at SPAC ten years to the day it was last played by Vasudo? Talk about serendipitous timing! As a fan, I had an overwhelming sense of pride - I can’t imagine how you must have felt. It must have been wild.

To see them play songs on-stage songs I’ve heard them play in a basement, to see Rick just absolutely smash vocals on something he was the backup singer (not the lead singer) during Vasudo. He’s worked so damn hard on his voice, it’s tremendous.

To see all that happen in front of my eyes was one of the most amazing and humbling and grateful experiences I’ve ever had and every jam from that night was just amazing. That was super special to see what hard work does and what all of those guys on-stage work their tails off and it’s great to see that happen.

A lot of those have been fulfilled – really it’s crazy, we’ve hit some: Red Rocks, playing Europe, getting Goosemas to a bigger venue. I have in my notepad: “Goosemas, Moving tour, something like a Warped or HORDE tour”. Just visions of blazed kid writing some ideas down...but to see Rick and the guys and Trevor, Spuds, just everyone work their tails off to tone their crafts and along with everything with building a crew and now us working our tails off.

Seeing all that grinding go down and having those goals be hit is phenomenal and I feel so fortunate and lucky every single day that we get to do this. I’m so grateful for it. To summarize what some of my goals and aspirations would be now, and its something I’ve said for a while, it’s “60 years of music or more" – let's do this forever.

To get that done, it’s just a lot more hard, hard work on everybody’s end. I’m very fortunate and grateful for where we’re at and where we are trying to go and what we’re trying to do. And it’s just to play as much as possible for our awesome community and to grow and be the best support system for these guys, who are on a journey.

As their great friend and brother, I’m just so excited for them and the community that you all get to experience some of this. I think the most important times are just ahead of us – our ten year anniversary is coming up.

with Jon Caruso Dating all the way back to ancient Greek theater, stage lighting has played a role in all types of stage productions, even before the invention of the practical electric lamp by Thomas Edison in 1879-1880 (1). Henry Irving, an English stage actor in the Victorian era, initiated the first lighting rehearsals to practice stage lighting before a performance around the same time period (1878-1898) (2). Stage lighting has since been elevated to an art-form, with the rise of sophisticated and frankly awe-inspiring technologies. Great stage lighting and production (as a whole) enhances the live experience by setting various moods in dynamic and diverse ways.

Modern sophisticated light productions offer fully immersive experiences using a variety of advanced techniques utilizing the four controllable qualities of light (Intensity, Color, Movement and Direction) (3). It takes a lot of hard work, education and dedication to accomplish what experienced production teams accomplish every night on tour. There's a lot of planning, set-up, labor and experimentation involved to deliver exciting, memorable experiences - in addition to being on-call in case anything goes awry (which it sometimes does, given how dependable technology can be sometimes, especially in the elements).

Professionals like Andrew Goedde, and his team at Goedde Sound & Light know this very well. To celebrate our tenth volume, we take a deeper dive with Andrew, our first interview, to learn more about him and see what's changed/evolved since we last spoke in May 2021.

When did you start getting into lighting and what initially drew you to it?

Who are your biggest influences?

So, I just went back to look at old pictures in my phone to make sure I have these dates correct, but I basically got into lighting the week I lit up my first “show” in 2015. A few of my friends had started a band and asked me to run the lighting and audio they had for their first show at one of their grandparent’s house for a basement party while they were out of town. I never thought about getting into it before that week, but ever since I went to my first music festival Electric Forest in 2013, lighting was my favorite part of the show. We did one more show that year in the backyard of another band members parents house in a wooded part of there property and we called the show “Jam in the Woods”.

We built a stage a few weeks before the show and brought power out there and lit up all the trees to try and make it feel like a festival vibe. It was pretty epic for the time. From there, I bought my first moving lights and console in 2016 and started Goedde Sound and Light a year later in 2017 and met Goose in 2018 and have been full time touring with them since.

Influences: Jefferson Waful, Luke Stratton, Chris Kuroda Stage lighting and design is an art form, especially with how experts, like yourself, time the lights to certain cues in music and match the color to the general feeling or mood of the music.

It's very fascinating, from an audience perspective. How do you do it? Is it part instinct, combined with experience and a general knowledge of how the dynamics of light work?

The emotions of the song or jam that I get determines what color looks I’m going to use. Being able to feel what color a song should be comes pretty naturally for me, although I will play with multiple options to build a color look/palette for a specific song and for the jams.

As for timing, I was a drummer growing up, so keeping up with the Jams came easy and the experience I have now with the band over the years and how they play has taught how to know where they are going to take a song and how they will go back into a song for smooth transitions.

How I light Goose now is actually significantly different from how I did when we first started.

When I met Goose, I was at the very beginning of my experience with programming and operating and I was constantly trying to figure out how to do things at the same time put a show together that very night at whatever little venue we were at. There was no structure basically at all - I had very simple programming that I had figure out and just jammed with the band the whole time, even with the composed parts, because I did not have any structure at all to specifically light that certain song.

I just basically winged it every time.

Right before the pandemic happened, I started studying how other designers did things, programming-wise and I noticed how flawless and consistent the lighting was for composed parts of the songs and learned a few different techniques people were doing to get this product. One of them being a “cue stack” where you can stack as many cues as you want on top of each other to lay out the structure of the song like Intro, Verse, Chorus, etc. This was the most common way I found that the biggest designers were doing for the biggest shows so I knew this was what I needed to start working on. During the pandemic, I spent every day in my home office trying to figure out the best way to writing cue stacks. I would spend sometimes 3 weeks on one song and came up with some awesome stuff, but it was very challenging to get everything to work how I wanted to. When we started doing shows again I started running these for the first time and it was pretty much a disaster. Nothing worked how I wanted it to once we got to the show and at the time, we had a completely different lighting rigs for every show so it was impossible to keep up with updating all the cues for every show.

It wasn’t until I met Tony Caporale, who is now our lighting programmer, that taught me the proper way of how to program cue stacks. The way I taught my self how to do it took way longer and was less impactful and less consistent. We worked our first show together at Goosemas Mohegan Sun and cue stacked the Dripfield album the week prior and ran it for the first time at that show. 2 years later and we are on track to have 50 goose songs programmed this way by the end of this year.

Many of our readers might not know how much work goes into setting up (and breaking down) the lighting, video and sound equipment every night on tour. How long does it typically take you and your team to set up and break down the lighting rig?

Set up on a good day typically takes 4-6 hours for lighting. I get in a hour early with our crew chief Pete Spadaro and we chalk the floor for the local riggers to hang our motors. From there we get our Rig flown which takes 2 hours or so. From there, back line comes in and builds the bands gear while we build the floor package and I spend a few hours programming. After that, we run sound check and do the show. For load out it takes 2 hours or so to break it down and put it back on the truck.

Can you walk our readers through the evolution of your production rig (lighting, audio and video), especially from May 2021 to present (around the time of our first interview in Volume One)?

It’s simply incredible what you and your team have collectively achieved thus far!

Probably the biggest change we have made was moving our production services over to Gateway Productions. We worked with them on the TAB/Goose tour and it was a game-changer for our production. Most of the crew worked for Phish and had so much experience that we learned a lot from. After that tour, I knew we needed to work with Gateway full-time and this year has been the first year of that. Having the support of a big production company like Gateway has made life a lot easier on and off the road for me and our crew and has taken our production level and experience for the fans to another level.

For the upcoming Fall tour for Goose, is your team thinking of adding any new lights or effects to the arsenal? If so, is there anything you can talk in-depth about?

This will be our last tour for the diamond design we have had out all year. Me and Tony are working on programming new songs for this run so will be awesome to see those come to life. From here, I’m working on a extremely exciting new design for Goosemas and also something new for next year!

I've always been really impressed with your whistling when you’ve joined Goose on-stage during the (now rare) Paul Simon cover “Me and Julio Down by the Schoolyard”. Have you always been able to whistle in-tune like that?

My dad always whistled and I guess I just taught my self hearing him do it growing up. I remember getting in trouble in class when I was in grade school cause I would whistling in class. The band caught on to it fast once we started touring together, which is why they made me get up on stage to do it eventually event, though I didn’t want to.

Wysteria Lane

That night, as I was trying to settle into some kind of sleep, I heard a rustling from outside, and saw a light moving outside my window. My heart raced; I had only seen a few animals in all this time, so the noise of anything else other than the lapping of water against the beach, was almost jarring.

Then the sun set on Wysteria Lane, but something about it just wasn’t the same.

“Jim?” I called out, knowing there was no way it could be him. And it wasn’t. It was a man, though, who looked like he was seeing a ghost.

“Don’t be scared, I’m not going to hurt you,” he said, and it was clear he meant it. He could barely walk; he looked almost like he’d been recently unfolded from some sort of human origami project. “I can’t believe I found you.”

“Me? Why would anyone be looking for me? It’s everyone else who disappeared,” I said, finally realizing just how much I had been holding inside this entire time. “I stayed here on Wysteria because I couldn’t bear to leave if anyone came back. It felt safe here, somehow. How did you get here? Do you know what happened?”

“My name is Isaac,” he said, staring around. “I live a few streets over, or at least, I live a few streets over in my version of the world. Do you know about the Great Beyond?”

My heart skipped a few beats. How did he know that was my name for whatever had happened to take everyone away from me?

“No. Well, maybe. I’m not sure,” I said. “All I know is that everyone is gone. Except you, I guess.”

“Hello? Is anyone there?” My voice could barely get the words out. I had lost hope so long ago, but had to try. By my mark, it had been 7 months and 26 days since I had found myself alone, on a rocky beach near the sound.

In the time since, I had done as much investigating as possible. Everything seemed normal. The houses. The cafe on the corner. Even the ice cream shop down the street. But no one was here. At least, no one that I could see. It was like I had been left behind on the world’s largest field trip. Fortunately, wherever everyone else was, they hadn’t taken any food. I was surviving on whatever I could find in the kitchens of all of these abandoned homes and stores.

This particular morning, I was hanging outside what used to be a breakfast spot on the Avenue. The sky was a strange, cloudy haze. I looked up as far as I could see, hoping to be saved. Praying, even. But there was nothing, just this strange and quiet hell I had found myself in. The weirdest part was - I lived here. I knew every street in this small town. I just never thought I’d be here alone.

I tried to remember exactly what happened right before I was transported to the “Great Beyond,” as I’d taken to calling it. Ironic, considering I hadn’t actually gone anywhere. Everything seemed normal that day.

A bunch of us had gone out on Jim’s day sailer, It was a beautiful afternoon; clear and almost no winds, with so many cumulus clouds that both the sky and water looked like marshmallows.

We had a great time, although there was that one odd moment when we thought we had heard the crack of something on our hull, and someone laughing. We started rocking, but the fixed keel held us, and in a second or two, the whole thing was over.

We never saw any damage, but that laugh had stuck in my memory. I had no idea what, if anything, it meant.

I made dinner and took a nap. And when I woke up, everyone was gone. I thought a lot about Jim; my roommate and best friend. He had been sitting on the other couch, just a little sunburnt from being outside all day. And then, without any warning, he slipped into another world. Or at least this was my current working theory. If only I could bring him here with me today.

“It’s actually the opposite,” Isaac said. “You left us. Except you’re still here, just in another dimension. There are still a lot of people on Wysteria Lane; you just can’t see us. And we can’t see you. Until now. I have been working on a machine to move through the Great Beyond. And I think it worked. Will you come back with me today?”

He held out his hand, and I had no choice but to take it. As we walked toward what Isaac told me was a space machine (but just looked like a box truck without wheels), he described what was about to happen, as we moved through the membrane from one world to another. I took a deep breath and climbed in. Time to see if my Wysteria Lane was still the same.

“Enough lounging,” I thought to myself.

“Time to go home.” I dragged myself off the bench, took one more longing look down the Avenue, and then walked back to Wysteria Lane.

As much as I wanted to move into one of the bigger houses on the water, something about Wysteria kept me there. Maybe I was waiting for Jim to come back. It felt different there, so I stayed.

Recipe #8: Spud's Potato Candy with Chef Rick Gallego & special guest Asher Gallego

Directions: 1.

Depending on the size of your potato will depend on how much powdered sugar you use. My potato was about 8oz (see picture for size reference) and I ended up using 12 cups of powdered sugar.

Peel your potato and cut it into about 1in cubes. Place in COLD water and turn on high. Cook until fork tender, about 12 minutes.

(Why do we start potatoes in cold water? Potatoes are very starchy and dropping them in boiling water will result in the outside cooking very quickly and the middle being raw leaving you with a goopy mess. If we start them in cold water, the temperature of the potato will increase evenly, resulting in an even cook)

STORY TIME: We all know our beloved drummer is nicknamed "Spud's" but do you know why? When Ben was a little boy he was very mischievous and always banging on the drums. Ben either didn't like to listen or couldn't hear very well due to all the drumming. When Ben was up to his usual Shenanigans his dear Grandmother would always say "Benjamin, you'd better clean those spuds out of your ears!" and the name stuck.

Because Ben loved to "move to the beat of his own drum," he decided to start eating potatoes morning, noon and night. Fried, baked, mashed, latkes, potato salad, au gratin, boiled and his favorite of all....POTATO CANDY! His obsession got so bad he almost sold his first drum set to pay for the massive shipments. So he decided to start making it himself. Spuds became a master of making potato candy, a "professionnel de la pomme de terre" (as they call it in the Spud community) at about the same age he became an expert at the drums; some say he was a master at both crafts the day he was "Borne."

Ben reached a crossroads in his life when it was time to go to college. Berkeley or Le Cordon Pomme de Terre? I think we all know what he chose and we're so glad he did, but one can only wonder, what if? Through hours of research and a few shady lot deals I have acquired Ben's Top Secret Potato Candy recipe and I'm going to share it with you and hope he doesn't read this! And by the way, this is a great recipe to try out with all of your kids (hell, Ben perfected this recipe at 2 1/2 years old) so grab your goslings and try it out. This Spuds for You!

Ingredients: 1 Russet Potato 726 lbs of Powdered Sugar (Not really, but you'll need A LOT. Keep reading) Peanut Butter Fun Sprinkles and Such

After your potatoes are cooked and drained, let them cool off to about room temperature and add them to a stand mixer with a whisk attachment or a bowl and use a hand mixer.

Now mash the taters. Make sure not to overmix them, if there are small pieces of potato (about the size of a pea) dont worry about it, we have a lot of mixing to do still, it will smooth out.

5.

Start adding your powdered sugar 1 cup at a time making sure to periodically scrape the sides of your mixing bowl down. If you do this and the potatoes are still hot, the sugar will just melt and you'll end up with sweet, soupy mashed potatoes.

6.

Continue to add powdered sugar by the cup until your dough is the consistency of play doh. Not sure? Just "Feel It Now" to find out.

7.

Once your dough is ready, put a piece of parchment paper on a large cookie sheet and spread your dough out into an even thin layer. I put another piece of parchemnt on top and used a rolling pin to get it even but your hands or your goslings webbed feet will work just as well.

8.

After your dough is evenly spread you can start spreading on the peanut butter. You can heat your peanut butter up for about 20 seconds in the microwave to make it easier to spread but make sure its not too hot or it will melt your candy. Once your PB is spread you can add almost anything you'd like to the inside we put sprinkles (OR "Jimmies" if you are reading this in Boston) Connoisseurs and PCM's (Potato Candy Masters) will say this is blasphemy but I'm over here like, "Can't I live while I'm young?!"

9.

Let your candy rest in the fridge for a couple hours and then its time to roll one up...a log of potato candy that is! Take your time and use the parchment paper to your advantage. I'm going to skip the directions for the rolling process because if you are reading this, I'm sure you've rolled a thing or two in your day.

10. After its rolled, take a knife and run it under HOT water before each slice, this will keep the knife from sticking and give you a nice clean slice.

11. Now your Spuds Potato Candy is "So Ready!" And I can promise after you take your first bite all you'll think is "Tastes Good, Not Too Harsh. What it did? It went straight to my heart!"

I'd just like to thank my best friend in the world, my son Asher for taking over my section and helping me with this recipe. "Go Everywhere, Feel Everything. My love for you grows like a vine."

At the time, I met Marc, my load was heavy. My wedding had been canceled 3 times and finally postponed indefinitely. Then my mom died of brain cancer in September 2020. I was settling uncomfortably into my mortality, battling grief and depression, isolated from friends and family. COVID silenced my escape, the live music scene. But alas, there was Goose! A beacon of resilience and adaptability at a time I couldn’t fathom either concept. And beyond Goose, a community that fosters harmony, positivity, and connectedness when I needed it most.

That Frederick show on 5/3/21 was a visceral experience. I was baptized in the muddy rainwater blessed by the "Spirit of the Dark Horse!" I really needed the validation that I was where I was supposed to be. I really needed to trust the universe again. I really needed a purpose. Even as I write this now, searching for the strength and courage to quit my job and pursue personal fulfillment over a paycheck, I get the privilege to write to you and it feels good. Thanks for being my friend! Thanks for giving us the EGT! And many thanks for having me!

It’s not news to you; this is the story you’ve lived, but now our readers can know. There’s a whole lot of historical context behind the TEDitor’s desk, and who better to tell it than Paige Caruso?

An Open Letter to Our TEDitor An interview with Paige Caruso with Lisa Governa Dear Jon, First of all, don’t panic. This isn’t one of those Dear John letters. It’s quite the opposite actually — this is an affirmation. Secondly, surprise! I’m sure keeping this content a secret from you on our biggest volume yet did wonders for your blood pressure. (Editor's Note: It did). As per usual, I managed to use every second of our deadline to further exacerbate your anxiety. Good thing you don’t have any hair to lose! Truly, thank you for your trust and support that it would be delivered.

This idea spawned in North Philadelphia on March 25th at approximately 2 a.m. We had just witnessed the most epic "Echo of a Rose" at The Met. We ordered cheesesteaks from Pat’s and Gino’s, so Paige could decide what she liked better (neither of which are the best but that’s a whole other article). We thought about you! We wished you were there, but were so grateful you stayed home with the kids, so Paige could rage for the weekend. Boom! There it was. Volume 10 content inspired by gratitude.

I’ll start by expressing mine. A lot of folks have asked me how I joined the EGT. The short answer: divine design. I met Marc Komito on lot (someone please put that on a shirt) in Frederick, MD 5/3/21. I didn’t know you yet, Jon, but your ‘This week in el Goose’ memes gave me life and I was looking forward to snagging Volume 1 in person. After several hours of conversation with Marc, he asked, “Do you write?” to which I responded with something like, “Um, no. Write what?”. The EGT was expanding and wanted a female perspective. Marc thought I was the chick for the job. You gave me full creative freedom for my first article, a satirical editorial piece in Volume 2 called "How to Impress Your Empress." I was absolutely terrified of the debut, but many volumes later, here we are! Cute story, but here’s what it really meant for you and the team to take a chance on me, someone nobody knew, with zero experience and an unbridled passion for a bird band.

Paige has had several nicknames over the few years I’ve known her. Coattails was first because wherever the EGT took Jon, Paige was in tow for the ride. I fondly call her "Thatch" because her dark sense of humor is a little bit fucked. She’s probably most well known in our community for her love and devotion to Peter, her favorite band member who - despite a thick head of hair - has an uncanny likeness to her husband. Paige and Jon are the EGT, but there is so much more beyond the publication.

Paige grew up doing marching band. She was the captain of the Color Guard for a few years. Generally, and shockingly to those who know her now, she was very shy. “I didn’t have a ton of friends. I’m the youngest of three. I have a brother JR and sister Michelle who are 5 and 7 years older than me. I grew up in Needham, where Ben Atkind is also from.

My parents, were high school sweethearts. My dad was a plumber and my mom's a lunch lady, so we had a modest upbringing, if you will. My dad was big Dead fan back in the day. I grew up listening to a lot of Dave Matthews, Elvis, and Abba. On our family rides up to New Hampshire, we would rock out to Elvis and Abba greatest hits. One of my family traditions that we do at weddings or parties of any kind really, is we all perform "Paradise by the Dashboard Light." We act it out like we are Meatloaf and Ellen Foley. We do it at all of our own weddings.

We do it at other people's weddings. It’s what my family is known for.”

They have a little slice of heaven they visit every summer with their family. “I’ve been going to Terrace Pines Campground in New Hampshire my whole life.

My Mom started going in 1969 and my parents got their own seasonal in 1989. Jon and I got our own seasonal site last year. I love that place. It’s my happy place. I love that I can take my kids there now.

All my best friends are from there. It’s something I feel blessed that my parents gave me as a child.”

Paige is a die-hard Patriots fan. Between football, Goose, her full time job, and her family, she’s got her hands full. “Truthfully I don't have many hobbies. I did learn how to make balloon animals! Two arts and crafts specialists at summer camp were learning how to do it and taught me so we could do it together at special events during the week. It's actually quite entertaining!

Jon and I also watch a lot of trashy TV. We spent my whole maternity leave and are still now watching Below Deck.”

She commutes an hour to work 5 days a week. That’s two hours round-trip without traffic. “I am a site coordinator for an after school program at an elementary school. I have about 130 kids and about 15 to 16 staff members that I'm in charge of… They don’t all come on one day. We have a max that can come per day, but it's a pretty popular program. We have a waitlist! I've been there since 2012. It's really grown substantially since I started there. This will be the company's 40th year!”

After Paige described an average day, I wanted to sign up myself. “When the kids come to us, they have a snack and then we usually go outside weather pending.

Then they do homework or an art project prepared by the staff or they can go to the gym. Sometimes we'll bring in outside vendors or performers like reptile handlers or a Frisbee guy or a bubble show. It's cool that parents who work longer hours can keep their kids after school.”

Paige went to Fitchburg University for early education, but ended up switching majors to interdisciplinary studies. A series of questionable decisions led her to meet the love of her life. “Jon was a junior when I was a freshman, and we met in my first few weeks of college.

I was hanging out at a campus event with some girls I met, and this guy comes in and looks like he’s straight off Staten Island. He had spiked hair and a chain with a shirt barely buttoned. He'd come to this event to steal stacks of pizza. He said, ‘I'm bringing these pizzas back to my place! Come to my apartment!’ As three 18 year old girls, we thought that was a great idea. So we followed this guy to his apartment, being young and dumb, and we couldn't walk in to a nerdier group of people. There’s probably about 10 to 15 people playing Rock Band.” Paige described them as “the kind of people who have a Star Trek marathon where they watch every version of every episode of Star Trek ever.”

The people who lived there called it The Casa. “It turned into every Thursday night for Thirsty Thursday me and my friends would go to The Casa because these nerdy guys were trying to make their place the place to be. And it was! We had a blast! We would regularly play Rock Band. That's what we did. I would be the singer on The All American Rejects "Dirty Little Secret" because I knew all the words. We started going there not for just parties, but in the afternoons after classes. I started to see Jon around playing Rock Band and we talked back and forth on Facebook. I remember thinking to myself, I don't know if I can date this guy.

He’s so nerdy. My friend said, ‘He's probably rich. He’s from Connecticut.’ Not a true fact by the way.”

Paige decided Jon’s dorky nature was endearing. “Our first date, Jon invited me over to watch Iron Man with him and his friends. It just came out on DVD, and they got it from the Red Box. I remember he held my hand the entire time, and it hurt so bad afterwards.” Paige started hanging out with Jon at the computer lab on campus where Jon was working as a lab monitor. “A couple of weeks after our first date, we were walking back from the computer lab through the quad and he asked me to be his girlfriend. We’ve been together ever since!”

Not everyone experiences the feeling of knowing you’ve met the one. I didn’t believe it existed myself until I met my life partner. Paige had that feeling from almost the beginning. “I knew pretty early into our relationship that I was going to marry Jon. I knew, like, a month in. My friends said, ‘You're not!’ And I said, ‘No, I'm dead serious. I feel that I'm going to be with this guy.’ I remember the first time we kissed and where we were on campus the first time he said I love you.

I just knew very early on, even at 18 years old, that I was meant to be with Jon.” Jon knew it too and planned his proposal. “His family went to Old Orchard Beach, Maine every summer for a week. Jon proposed to me at a bird sanctuary on the beach at Old Orchard. He thought it was a fabulous idea to make me walk like two miles down the beach. Now I hate surprises, so I knew he was going to propose on this trip, I just didn't know exactly when or how. Mind you, it’s 7 a.m. and drizzling while we’re walking down this beach. Jon had bought a sand dollar and wrote ‘Will you marry me?’ on it. We finally get to this place he made me walk 50 miles to (at least that’s what it felt like because I got chub rub and it was very serious). He gave me a hug, dropped the sand dollar behind me, and says, ‘What's that behind you?’ It scared the crap out of me. I thought there was a crab or something. I picked it up and turned around and he was down on one knee.

He was smart enough to have his parents come pick us up so we didn't have to walk back.”

They were married on August 18th, 2012, shortly after Paige graduated from Fitchburg State. They’ve been tested a lot in their 11 years together; the first before they even celebrated their one year anniversary. “Unfortunately, both of Jon's parents have passed away since we got married. His mom passed away about nine months after we got married very unexpectedly. She was only 51. It was very traumatic for us. Then unfortunately, last summer, Jon's dad also passed away unexpectedly.” Thankfully, Jon has a supportive network in his grandparents, his aunts, his brother, Nick, and his in-laws. Jon’s in-laws are not only supportive, but are also highly entertaining. The Theriault clan, Paige’s maiden namesake, need a docuseries, a novel, or some sort of platform to share their daily existence with the world.

As with Paige, incredible personalities and a savage sense of humor runs in their blood. “My family is more invasive than most families. (Laughing) My friends in college would always make fun of me because their parents would call them like once a week on Sundays. My whole family would call me six or seven times a day for no reason whatsoever… we’re a family that doesn't say 'I love you' a lot. We show it in different ways (more laughing). Jon has a great relationship with my brother. They do a lot of stuff together. My dad and brother got Jon into Dead and Co shows and the jam band scene, so they have a pretty great relationship.”

Now, the whole family enjoys Goose together! The Theriault’s are huge fans of Jon and the EGT. One of Paige’s favorite memories was taking her dad to the Fox G1 Benefit show during the Cap run. “I got to take my dad and he embarrassed the hell out of me... My dad and I were on the rail Pete side and he had this sign that said Paige’s dad. He held it up right in front of Peter and in between songs Peter says, ‘Paige’s dad is in the house!’ Halfway through the next song, my dad flipped the sign over. The other side said ‘I know Jon Caruso’. Peter started laughing so hard he almost fell off of his chair. After the show I was still so embarrassed, but Peter took a picture with the sign and said he loved it and it was great. The EGT really has made Goose a family thing for us.”

Paige and Jon have made their own beautiful family together. They have three amazing children — one who stays close to their hearts in spirit. “Travis is our first son. He was born in 2015 with a very rare, severe heart defect called Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome. About 1 in 100 babies are born with some type of heart defect. It's the most common birth defect — anything from a hole that closes up on its own to really severe conditions like Travis’s. He got diagnosed when I was 18 weeks pregnant with him. We were given three options when we got his diagnosis: we could terminate, we could do comfort care where we get him to birth and then let him pass naturally, or we could do a three stage surgery process that had a 75% success rate. We decided to do the surgery because Boston Children's Hospital, the best hospital in the world for congenital heart defects, was in our backyard.”

“Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome is a defect in which your left ventricle is pretty much non existent, and blood can’t circulate correctly. Travis's condition was made worse by an intact atrial septum. Where there usually is a hole in between two things in the heart, he didn't have one. Right after he was born, he had to go straight into the catheterization lab and have a hole poked through his atrial septum. In his six month life, he had three open heart surgeries, seven heart catheterizations, and a feeding tube so he can get nutrition and medicine without worrying about him throwing up.”

Paige was only 25 when she had Travis. “As young parents having your first child, it was a whirlwind. You don't think about something like that happening. I would’ve never in a million years thought I would have a child that had a severe heart defect. He developed this other condition called pulmonary stenosis, which is what ultimately led to his passing. Your pulmonary veins build up scar tissue and the only way to deal with it is to go in every few weeks and have a surgery to clean it out. Who wants to go to the hospital every six weeks?”

“Our goal with Travis was always to give him a chance, and that's what we did. When they told us there was nothing more they could do for him, we accepted that. We weren't going to push him and continue to make him do all these things that were just going to prolong his passing. That was a really difficult situation, but also a very beautiful situation.

Having that type of thing happen in your life, people rally around you. We brought so much awareness to Travis’s condition. He taught so many people in his six months with us. In the grand scheme of my life, from his diagnosis to his passing, it was only 11 months, not even a full year of my life. But it changed who I was as a person. It's something that I will live with the rest of my life. I always will miss Travis. My children will know about him, especially because when my children have children, they'll have to have their hearts looked at. It's something that is in our family forever.”

Not everyone gets to take their baby home. Paige and Jon are grateful that after 98 days, Travis got to experience life outside of a hospital setting. “Oh, he had a beautiful life. He really did. He got to go home. He went to Bass Pro Shop. One time he went to Target. We used to walk around with a little oxygen tank… it's a very humbling thing to experience. Very sad, very heartbreaking, but also it was so heartwarming. Even after Travis passed away almost 20 staff members from Boston Children’s Hospital came to his funeral service… I always say if I ever won Mega Millions, my first thing I would do is donate large sums of money to Boston Children's Hospital. If I was ever able to somehow help funding for research for heart disease, that is definitely something that I’d love to do.”

So how in the actual hell does one begin to live with this kind of grief? Paige ‘Thatch’ Caruso chooses a one two punch of dark humor and very openly sharing her feelings. “My whole family deals with this kind of stuff the same way. I remember getting Travis’s diagnoses and being beside myself. I cried for two days straight. My brother said, ‘Well, I think we can get a Make-A-Wish out of this. Celebrities come to the hospital all the time!’ And he was right.

My dad's family had a lot of child loss as well, so I think my family's coping mechanism is humor.”

Paige is truly one of the funniest people I’ve ever met. She’s unapologetically herself and courageously shares her light and wit in even the darkest moments.

“A couple of years ago, I went on a retreat for women who have lost children, which I know, sounds like the best time in the world. I'm worried the whole time going into this that these women are not going to appreciate my dark sense of humor. I mentally prepared to tone myself down about how I feel. I ended up being myself. People were constantly laughing. They wanted to sit at the table I was at because everyone was having so much fun.

Not what you would have expected from this kind of retreat. At the end of it, a woman who had lost her child only about a month before the retreat, said she hadn't laughed so hard in over a year because of me. If that had been the only thing I got out of the experience, I would’ve been good.

To have someone who just experienced the most traumatic thing you can experience say that was all I needed to hear. The food is great, but nobody is signing up to go to that for fun. To know I made someone happy stuck with me all these years.

It meant a lot.” Jon and Paige have had two incredible children since Travis.

Their second child, Harry, is known as a rainbow baby.

“He was born 11 months after our first son passed away.

I fully believe that there's something in the universe that makes kids who are rainbow babies the way they are.

Harry is most interesting kid you’ll ever meet. He’s into the weirdest stuff, but he's also super sweet and funny.

His preschool teacher was telling me Harry's the only kid that could have a full blown conversation. He'll talk about anything. He loves Godzilla, comic books, and right now he’s really into turtles and frogs and toads. The kid walks around in a fishing vest and an alligator paw necklace.”

I had the absolute pleasure of hanging out with Harry for his first Goose show on Halloween in Worcester. This kid is really special. “His music taste is very diverse. He loves Metallica and the Gorillaz. He likes Phish more than Goose. Truthfully, I don't know if I'd be as good in life as I am if I didn't have Harry. He truly saved me at a time when I needed saving. He has a personality that is larger than life.”

The new gal on the block is Sadie. The epitome of a Goose Chick, she’s named after one Paige’s favorite songs, Lead the Way. Her conception was another journey through adversity for Jon and Paige. “I started trying to have another baby in March of 2020 when the world was shutting down. We had just bought our house, and we always said when we got a house we'd have another baby. We weren’t thinking that it’d be an ordeal, but it turned into an ordeal. It took me almost three years to get pregnant. We were seeing fertility specialists. That was a process. There's a lot that goes into that, and it was setback after setback with it. They weren't going to be able to do IVF (in vitro fertilization) on me… it really was a dark period for me. I'm someone who’s very open about my struggles, and I really wasn't being open about that. It took a toll on me.”

“I started to accept that maybe we weren't going to have another baby — that we were just meant to have what we had. The doctors decided to track my cycle for six months. That required being poked and prodded, ugh, so many blood draws. But after they tracked my cycle for one month, there she was! And because my cycle was being tracked, I know for a fact she’s a Ted Tapes baby. It was a long journey, but she’s the absolute best baby. She’s the chunkiest little thing that there ever was! She’s not even 10 months old and she’s almost 24 pounds. A big daddy's girl!” Maybe it was the cycle tracking, or maybe there’s some science to these Ted Tapes baby making jokes.

Sadie already has some shows under her belt with an interesting statistic. “Around 23 weeks, babies can start hearing outside of the belly. The first time she went to where she could actually hear while she was in me was Radio City, and so the first live song she ever heard in the womb was "California Magic." The first song she heard at our first show out of the womb in Newport was "California Magic." Full Circle!”

Jon and Paige have three fur babies to round out the Caruso family. “Mags, short for Magnolia, is a nine pound Miniature Dachshund that we rescued. We got her after one of the Westville shows in 2021.

Dachshund’s pick a person and I happen to be Maggie’s.

We got her when I was having trouble getting pregnant with Sadie. I think that’s where my emotional attachment to Maggie comes from. Biscuits is our fat orange cat. Putty Putty isn't technically our cat. She was my mom’s then she went to live with my sister for a while. My sister moved to a house where she couldn’t have a cat so we took Putty Putty. She’s a 16 year old cat who spent the first year of her life on the streets of South Boston. She's pretty badass. She puts Biscuits in his place and keeps Maggie in line. She’s in charge.”

How did Goose find their way into the hearts and home of the Caruso’s? I’ve asked this question of many Goose fans, and a pattern is emerging — a theme that seems to strengthen the binds of our community and deepen our appreciation for the boys and their jams — many of us seem to find Goose during a trying time in our lives.

“Our entire relationship Jon has been trying to get me into any type of music that he likes. I would go to concerts every once in a while but I would have to really love the band to go. I’d probably only been to 15 concerts total in my whole life before Goose. In the summer of 2020 Jon was really struggling. Jon loved going to live music. That was his therapy. When he started talking about Goose I thought here we go again! I guess I’ll humor him. He wanted to go to the drive-in show in October in Swanzey. You could have five people in a car and nobody wanted to go, so I went. We had to go through Fitchburg to get to Swanzey so we decided to make a day of it. My mom watched Harry. We drove through our old campus and went to our favorite coffee place and got our favorite Chinese food. We had a great time! October is the month Travis died.

It's really a difficult time of year for us, but I was finding comfort at that show.”

Jon initially tried to get Paige into Goose with songs like "Yeti" and "Time to Flee." She was not impressed, but after enjoying the show, she did some digging on her own.

“Afterwards, I wanted to listen to them a little more. I explored on my own on Spotify. Jam bands were never my scene. I was into music like Fall Out Boy. When I heard "Lead the Way" and "Butter Rum" I was sold. It also helped Jon showed me a picture of the band. I said, ‘Oh! Well that one looks like you!’

Paige has been on Pete side ever since! Paige joined el Goose and down the rabbit hole she fell. She found out Ben graduated from her hometown and attended her after school program. Jon got Paige a Cameo from Peter for Christmas. He started regularly posting the iconic "This Week in el Goose" memes. Their passion for the band and involvement in the community was escalating quickly.

When the Swanzey and Westville shows were announced for June 2022, Paige had an idea to take it a step further. “I told Jon we should make a flyer of the meme to hand out at the shows!” A couple days later, Jon took that idea to another level and the EGT was born. “He started reaching out to people about being on a team to make a legit newspaper. We got Marc Komito, Ryan Storm, Russo, and a couple other people… everyone pitched in $75 to get the first volume printed.

Justin Wolfe was our first sponsor. We didn't even have a printer! It's now our big joke that we went to Staples and had them printed. They weren’t printed uniformly. Some we had to fold and staple together ourselves. That's why they're so hard to find. I don't even have volume one. It didn’t help they were being handed out at Frederick during a tsunami.”

“Volume Two, we grew a little more… we interviewed Coach and started getting attention on social media. We used an actual printing company. We were really excited to launch it in Swanzey because that’s where our first show was and we were finally going to hand them out in person. As soon as we pulled up and opened the trunk, people were swarming us! I didn’t realize how big of a deal it was!”

Jon then heads to the Millville post office. Shoutout to these lovely postal workers serving a small town of 2300, who handle a huge workload for us with care.

As much as the EGT is a labor of love, it serves as a practice in creative writing therapy. “There's been times where Jon has sacrificed a lot to make sure it gets done. Last summer, he was writing his interview on a notepad next to his dad in the hospital. Even though his dad was dying, he had a deadline. He needed to do that for himself too because it's also a therapeutic thing for him.

He puts a lot of his own heart into the cartoons, especially. If you look through them, you'll see it talks about parent loss and other things Jon is experiencing right now. He became an orphan at 34. He puts all of that into his work.”

There’s so many amazing things coming out of our Goose community.

Ultimately, our mission is to give back. “Not everyone can buy a shirt or a souvenir when they go to the show. To give someone something to remember their show is really a great thing. Jon loves to see people's faces light up.”

Not every couple survives the kind of traumas Jon and Paige have experienced, yet the Caruso’s are full of gratitude. Not every couple has what they have: true love, true grit, and true purpose. “Jon has given me everything I've ever wanted, every hope and dream. He really has. He is an amazing husband and father. I never would have imagined that we would be part of something like this. We really do have an amazing life and I just I love him so much.”

“Later that night, we met the band! When we walked backstage, people were clapping and cheering ‘el Goose Times’! I was flabbergasted people knew who we were.

We had the EGT’s Resident Chef, Rick Gallego, with us and I remember him saying, ‘Oh my God there’s cake!

We get to watch them eat cake!’ It was really awesome meeting everybody… they were just so nice and so welcoming. Peter remembered he did a Cameo for us.

It was a surreal experience.”

The next day at Westville, Jon and Paige received another warm welcome from the community. “So many people were stopping Jon that it turned into a long walk down the hill. It was wild to see because Jon is definitely more quiet and reserved. I'm more of the social butterfly… What I love about this experience for us that I get to see that side of Jon. I like to watch him getting attention and having something he can express himself through. It's really fun to watch him get recognition for something he works so hard on.”

As an EGT contributor, I cannot express how hard Jon works to bring each issue to fruition. Paige calls it “a rollercoaster of emotions.” It starts with a conference call. We discuss content, set deadlines, conceptualize formatting, and figure out logistics. Which artist will do cover art? What sponsors do we need? Do we have the funds to support our page count? How many copies will support the whole run? Once we, the contributors, get our shit together, Jon formats the entire volume and it heads off to the printer.

Jon used to work for a newspaper doing ad layouts. He uses that experience to make his own creation. “It’s basically a second job that he doesn't get paid for. He spends a lot of hours after the kids go to bed working on it. He spends a lot of time on the cartoon. He really puts his heart and soul into it. He loves that thing. But he has moments where he doesn’t feel like doing it anymore.

Then something will happen where he gets the life blown back into him, and he says, I'm doing this forever.”

Once we receive our printed copies, Jon packages and ships the volume to over 250 loyal subscribers. He packs each by hand, ensuring to protect the integrity of the magazine so collectors and readers alike receive it in pristine condition.

Letters to the TEDitor from the EGT Staff When Jon Caruso, a perfect stranger at the time, first reached out to pitch the El Goose Times, there was an unmistakable passion dripping from his voice. It was immediately clear that no wasn’t going to be an acceptable answer so I jumped on board as EGT #2. From that first day, our Teditor-in-chief has continued to grow as a leader with authenticity, kindness, and humility guiding his moral compass. Where just about anyone else would have seized the opportunity to grab the almighty dollar, Jon has never wavered in his desire to bolster our community with a heart full of love instead of a pocket full of money…PURE! As have so many of us in the broader community, I’ve grown to treasure Jon’s friendship, respect his advice and council, and marvel at the work that he both he and the rest of the team at EGT have done and continue to do. Much love to Jon, Paige and everyone who has joined us on this most magical journey. Here’s to Volume # 10!!! well if i had it all, if i had it all what life would leave me satisfied? all of this gold, all of this gold it don’t weigh enough to make this life whole - Marc Happy 10th EGT, Jon! I am so grateful that I was able to join this team a few issues back; I’ve loved being a part of this community!

I can still remember meeting for the first time in the Swanzey lot and people looking at us like weirdos for giving then free stuff. I remember the time we caught Harry smoking weed on the back of the lawn and great woods and that time Sadie had to be kicked out of the show for trying to sneak backstage and saying "I Swear Peter is my Dad!" And I know I swore I'd never speak of it again but there was that time where Paige had that "school field trip" to the Swiss alps, the same week Peter was apparently skiing there. You gotta admit that was really strange...amiright?

Jon, your light and generosity has shined brighter than anyone in this community the last 20 years. Being the VPOTUS candidate on Rick's 2032 presidential run had to be the icing on the cake.

It's truly a pleasure to have been your friend for the last 20 years, you are dear to my heart and I'm proud to call you one of friends. I'm so grateful and humbled that you asked me to be part of something so cool that will most certainly go down in the honk-story books. Here's to 20 more!

We have SO many fan artists who support us through in kind donations & social media. We have an official partnership program and are lucky to have Orion Jewelry Design and Knitting by Darian as two of our official fan artist partners. We have a wonderful group of volunteers, Aija Putelis, Tami & Nick Groves, Christy & Graham Singleton and Sydney MacCreery that are helping us at our show activation events - running the WSF table, engaging with fans, telling them about our purpose, mission, any active campaigns and fundraising. As we are getting into a rhythm and growing we are bringing on more volunteers and starting to have committees for some of our larger events like the upcoming Red Rocks campaign and in person events. These volunteers are helping us with the entire campaign, from researching and selecting the beneficiary organizations through the actual show and activation events. We are really excited to have volunteers helping us with that entire process now.

Why did you choose the song Western Sun as the foundation name?

The song “Western Sun” serves as a reminder of who we really are and what really matters in life. It’s a calling to live fully and meaningfully. To connect with others, be present and intentional. And that is exactly what WSF is all about.

How does the Western Sun Foundation give back?

We have a selection process and criteria to select beneficiary organizations as part of our Charitable Giving Program. In that program we provide monetary gifts to the beneficiary and use our platform for awareness & visibility campaigns highlighting the local organizations and their causes. We fundraise through virtual silent auctions, raffles and will have our first ever WSF pin available to purchase for a suggested donation this fall. We have some really exciting new fundraising partnerships and events that will happen this fall too. (So stay tuned for that!)

with Sara Tonin For the first edition of Arise, I had the pleasure of interviewing Angela Lindsay of The Western Sun Foundation. I hope you enjoy the radiant realm of the foundation's work, where community, enlightenment and giving back converge. There is no doubt the utter brilliance and heart behind the minds of this foundation. As you dive into this interview, you will soon learn about how they're shaping a brighter future with their impactful drive to spread light, love, and the power of giving back.

Tell me about the Western Sun Foundation, how did it start and why?

Western Sun Foundation (WSF) started when a large group of community members got together to work on a website project with a goal of bringing people together, supporting and building community. Very early on it was decided the project would actually be part of a larger non-profit that would give back to the people and communities Goose fans were traveling through. WSF grew from that idea of our community coming together, of harnessing the palpable energy of the fanbase and transforming it into positive action. More than ever community-based small & mid-sized nonprofits are hurting financially and working hard with less resources to fill huge needs in their communities. Their work is important and meaningful.

We saw this need and we also saw a real desire from our community members to work together, give back, rally around a cause and do something positive and selfless that would be beneficial for others. So, WSF was created to help harness, organize and direct that same passion and energy we all share for live music and Goose into positive initiatives benefiting the communities we travel through.

We also hold community impact events with local organizations and some of our beneficiaries such as making Flow Kits for 914Cares in New York over the Cap Theater Run or sorting baby clothes and packing diaper orders with Share Our Spare in Chicago during the Salt Shed shows. At the upcoming Detroit show we helped facilitate an event between Goose and our recent beneficiary, Girls Rock Detroit, for some of their campers to have the opportunity to meet some incredible women in the industry Goose’s Tour Manager, Sam King and Goose Production Manager, Marta Goedde. The girls will get an opportunity to ask them some questions, learn about their roles and then watch some of the soundcheck. It’s a really special opportunity for these young girls and we hope the experience will continue to inspire them towards a path in this industry.

We like to build a relationship with the organizations in the communities we are visiting and we work with them before, during and after our campaigns. One of the things that we think sets WSF apart from other similar organizations is our awareness and visibility campaigns that we hold for each beneficiary organization that is selected. Usually they last about a month and we use our social media platform to educate the community about the beneficiary organization - what they do, who they serve, what problem they are addressing and how they are addressing it.

We also like to use that time and our platform to highlight and educate the community on the problem itself - the statistics, facts, data and reality of the issues and the effect it has on real people in the community. We are firm believers that it’s important to use our platform to provide education, awareness and visibility in addition to financial support.

Who is the team behind-the-scenes?

Our all volunteer Board of Directors includes Sarah Blazincic (President & Executive Director), Stephanie Belcher (Treasurer), Michael Huxley and myself as Vice President and Director of Operations. We also have Cari Bryce, who not only recently stepped into the role of marketing and social media manager, but also just accepted a position on the board. She has been crushing it and we are so grateful to have her join the team! We have an awesome group of volunteers and supporters that help us. It’s been amazing to see how many people step up to volunteer their time, talents and energy for our mission. There have been so many people along the way that have helped us in different ways to get to this point. We are so grateful for the help and could not have done this without them.

Where would you like to see the Western Sun Foundation go?

We want to make an impact, give back in as many cities/states as we can and help as many people as we can. We are really proud of the work we have done so far but we would love to continue to grow our operational ability and team so that we can continue to expand our presence into even more communities the band tours through, expand our ability to give back to more local organizations and hold more community impact events where we volunteer or get involved with a local organization. We want WSF to go the distance and be around for 50+ years. :) We also hope that the Goose community learns something new from our campaigns and walks away with a little more awareness, knowledge and empathy. And maybe fans in certain areas of the country stay involved with these organizations or causes we highlighted even after the band has moved on from that city. We would love to see that.

What can we do better to support and spread awareness to your foundation?

We depend on help from the community in order to run all aspects of the organization.

Financial support, volunteer help and simply sharing our posts and information are definitely the best ways to help us. Reliable, taxdeductible donations are the best way to ensure that we are able to carry out our mission and continue to make a big impact in the communities we are traveling through.

Monetary donations, in kind donations, throwing your own fundraiser for WSF or simply sharing our fundraising and donation posts or links are all a huge help. We are also always in need of reliable volunteers to help us with our operations, charitable giving/beneficiary program, fundraising, in-person activation/ events and more.

If you could give one positive message to the Goose community, what would it be?

Because we focus on small and mid-sized local organizations and build relationships with them, we are able to witness the positive impact firsthand. It's both humbling and heartwarming. The support, generosity and selfless acts of the community have a very meaningful real life impact and these are the types of things in life that really matter. So keep connecting with, giving to and loving one another. Or, as Rick would say,

"...don't hold back. Go everywhere, feel everything, see everyone…"

I really wish the entire Goose community could truly see the impact of their support.
